A word from The Beauty Shop
Chef/ Restaurateur- Karen B. Carrier famed for -The Mollie Fontaine Lounge, Do Sushi, Another Roadside Attraction Catering opened Beauty Shop Restaurant in what was once said to be Priscilla Presley's curl-and-dye spot. It's a camp wonderland where the facade is Jetsons-era Vitrolite, a bar replaces the wash sinks, and choice seating is offered beneath hooded Belvedere hair dryers. Carrier is a mad genius of sorts. The restaurant's motto is "Look Good, Eat Good," and while the place makes you want to look good, you will eat good at The Beauty Shop. The menu is widely varied ~ a down -home American stance with world-beat tints and edges. The Beauty Shop is about the coolest, hippest restaurant around. It screams "Memphis", yet does so with ingenuity and originality; it plays a wacky theme to the limit but doesn't stream beyond the pale- It makes you feel good to be there, part of the fun; part of the animated crowd and leaves you well-fed to boot. What could be cooler that that? Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Everything about the Beauty Shop makes it worth enjoying over and over again. The charm of the vintage salon décor is balanced by contemporary light fixtures and organic artwork. The bar is an inviting location, with pleasant and attentive bartenders and a great selection of specialty drinks. But everything else is overshadowed by the creativity and excellence of the food. The menu, while somewhat limited, makes the selection process difficult, because everything sounds great. And the actual food exceeds your expectations, very well-thought-out combinations of flavors that are happily unexpected. And for the dessert lover, there are a vast variety of choices. The Beauty Shop is definitely a favorite that should be a regular treat."

  • "Besides the service being slow, we loved the Beauty Shop."

  • "We had great food and service. Started with Tuna Carpaccio, entrees were Peking duck with blackberry sauce and one of the specials - mushroom ravioli. All were very good. Desert was a toffee milk shake and Cinnamon Mexican Chocolate Chile gelato. Both were great. Lots of interesting muni items. I recommend it."

  • "a nice local restaurant that has a good mix of atmosphere and menu, chef has very high skill of using herbs and fruits to mix into the dishes."

  • "We always enjoy coming here. The decor is innovative but not trying too hard. The staff was attentive and friendly. We smiled, they smiled. The bartender whipped up a surprise non-alcoholic drink for me; the host asked us to wait a bit although we had reserved a table and were on time. The reward was the best table in the house, in one of the original hair salon booths, perfect for a romantic dinner. The place is a little loud but that gives a great sense of privacy. Tuna Carpaccio appetizer was terrific. Sea Bass and Peking Duck entrees were both very well prepared and presented. Mango Blueberry Sorbet dessert had lots of attitude. The chef here is a genius. Crisp, fresh and crunchy flavors are everywhere. Delicious."

  • "Normally, I really like going to "Beauty Shop", but this was not a good night for our group. One of my friends was served a mixed drink that was incomplete; this same friend had an uncooked corn on the cob served to him; another has to wait too long, twice, for drinks from the bar; I had the teriyaki steak salad which was sliced WAAAAY too hot and would have returned it to the kitchen, but it wS already late. I got through the meal by eating bread. Our waitress couldn't have been nicer or more apologetic. It was definitely an off night. I t would be good to add a few acoustical elements to absorb se of the sound as it's really loud."

  • "I proposed to my wife at The Beauty Shop and we have been there every year for 9 years. We love the food and ambience. They have great cocktails and it is one of the few places in Midtown that I still love. If you get the opportunity to eat during the day I recommend eating on the sidewalk. On the weekends it is a great place to people watch."

  • "Good selection of brunch menu items. Welcomed very friendly at the door. Waitress was satisfactory, but perhaps too busy as she didn't seem to listen 100%. Meals were good and had a nice presentation. I will return, but do hope for a different waitress/server."

  • "Food was ok. Went for brunch after church and the pancakes tasted like box mix. We ordered a side of bacon and they kept bringing it out before the rest of the meal was completed. Very crowded but the servers were nice. I may give them a second chance on a regular day."

  • "After reading the amazing reviews on opentable, we decided to give this place a try, we ordered mainly appetizers (chicken wings, calamari, carnitas, and short rib tacos), none tasted good. We also ordered the lamp chops and it taasted good but the size of the chops was much smaller than any other place I ve been too. Service was great though and that s the only reason I gave this place 3 instead of 2 stars"

  • "Second trip here. First time, just got dessert and sat outside - service terrible, food good (not great.) This time was for dinner. Overall pretty bad experience. Very expensive, and food only OK. We had duck appetizer and soup de jour. Then wife had chicken confit and I had lamb chops. None had much flavor, and sides weren't worth eating. Service was horrible. Seats are incredibly uncomfortable, and we were asked to squeeze our table even closer so the waiters could get by us (it was just my wife and I, and we barely weight 250 lbs combined.) The awkward seating meant we didn't stay around for dessert. Overall, incredibly disappointed - worse dining experience in years. We certainly won't be back or encourage anyone to go."

  • "We went for a group birthday dinner and had a great meal with great service in a fun atmosphere! I had the pasta special of the 3 Meat Tortellini which was excellent, although, I will say the portion size for the price was small. Indulged in the deserts and had the strawberry cake which was excellent and the blueberries on the side was a nice touch! Would recommend highly!"

  • "I love this place! My husband and I enjoyed a nice, relaxing night out without the children. I sat in a beauty shop chair - complete with a dryer hood above me! The food was really good. We ordered the guacamole as an appetizer, which was okay ... but then my meal came out. I had the petite filet with a maple glaze and wrapped in bacon. TO DIE FOR. But I think my favorite thing was the french fries cooked in truffle oil. They were so good. We both enjoyed a Moscow Mule and some wine. I wish I had left room for dessert because they looked amazing. Next time I'll just order truffle fries and dessert!"

  • "We visited The Beauty Shop for the first time and loved it! The food is great and there is a nice variety. The appetizers were excellent. A nice selection of deserts too. We satisfied the carnivores and vegetarian in our group too. The ambiance is fun and kitchy. We loved sitting in the private booths and had to have a picture taken under the hair drywer when finished. Please support this place! We will be back everytime we are in town!!!!"

  • "My husband and I went there with another couple during Valentine's Day weekend and though they were really busy the food was exceptional from appetizers to dessert. The service was good (not exceptional) and while a little loud, the atmosphere was fun and low key. We would go back."

  • "Awesome atmosphere, awesome service. Would absolutely go back. Be aware they have special menus for events like valentine's day that do not include any vegetarian options."

  • "Overall the experience was alright but not what I was hoping and expecting. The glazed pork appetizer was burned. The rib eye steak was served on corn bread. The corn bread was very crumbly. Every time you pressed on the steak to cut, the corn bread simply crumbled. The wine list was good, but as often is the case most wait staff have no idea how much wine should be poured in the glass and often they do not come to table to make sure your glass is never empty. We poured ourselves...that is not service, especially when they automatically charge 20% tip. I also had called in advance making sure that they could serve gluten free food. To my surprise the wait staff did not know and she had to ask the chef, which in one case chef didn't know"

  • "Brought my wife down from snowy Minnesota and we warmed up real nice at the Beauty Shop. Great food, (we had the 3 course meal deal), the coolest atmosphere, sitting in a former beauty salon, and the service was exceptional. Bill, our host took good care of us and seated us at one of the "cool" beauty station tables. Lindsey our waitress was great and gave us a nice history of the space. I would strongly recommend this place to anyone who wants a great dining experience in a unique setting. Fantastic!!!"

  • "The Beauty Shop never lets us down. The food is consistently amazing and creative, the service is perfect, the decor is inimitable . . . it's a great place for a casual lunch (don't forget the milkshake) and our number one spot in Memphis for a romantic dinner. Highly recommended."

  • "We went for valentines day. They had a prefix menu. Everything was very good and a great deal at 50.00 each person. You hot. 3 courses, appitizer, main course, and dessert. Very good size portions !! Overall on a 1-10 scale, I'd give this it a 9. Only real down side was every time door open, it sent a strong gust of freezing air in. Don't sit in first. 5 tables if you can help it !"

  • "We ordered the halibut and a tiny fillet over a few vegetables that looked like an appetizer was served as the main course. The fish seemed to be doused in vinegar, giving a very strong vinegar taste to the fish plates and vegetables. Another at our table had the steak and said it was fantastic and indeed, his plate had appropriate portions. If you go, order the steak. The restaurant itself was really cool, with the beauty shop theme."

  • "We planned a surprise birthday dinner for my husband at Beauty Shop. The server was wonderful for our party of 10. The food and drinks were great, and they even threw in a free piece of bday cake with a candle. Awesome night!"

  • "My dinning partners and I thoroughly enjoyed our meal at The Beauty Shop. The atmosphere was hip and quirky with elements of the former beauty shop. We especially admired the large art glass pendant lights. The menu offered a wide selection with unusually combinations which was a welcomed change from ordinary restaurants. One of the reasons we chose this spot was their commitment to locally sourced food and we were not disappointed. The food was fresh and perfectly prepared. The service was also friendly and accommodating. Our only regret was we did not have time for dessert."

  • "Would totally recommend for Brunch- great Bloody Marys. We love the beignet, which we had first with coffee- yum! Then we had eggs benedict and some kind of Mexican dish chiquillas....? Any way the menu had so many great items -we want to go back and try something else. Also the service was excellent - Food came out quickly including drinks what a treat for a Sunday."

  • "Dinner before the show was great. We had the kids with us and they split the ribeye dinner. They loved it and thought it was cool how they transformed the old beauty shop into a restaurant. I had the cheese ravioli pasta special and it was delicious! The sauces and combination of spices used were surprisingly tasty."

  • "Have always enjoyed the good food and excellent service, but had an unfortunate subpar experience for a Christmas Eve dinner. There was a scaled back menu (wish we had known that in advance) and it was the first time we have had a truly bad experience with service. We had been bragging in advance about how great everything would be to our guests, and it was embarrassing how subpar everything was. Guess everyone has an off night. Too bad it happened on Christmas Eve with our out of town guests we had hoped to treat to a great experience."

  • "Love the food and the restaurant. The couple with us had never been to The Beauty Shop: they fell in love. I made reservations and the restaurant wasnt busy. The other couple had already been seated, Unfortunately we were not put at the quaint booth, I was hoping we would have been. I did not ask to move, since we already were at a table. We will return."

  • "this place can get a bit noisy, but that's the only drawback. the food is delish, the decor (old beauty parlor furniture mixed with interesting art, sculpture, and lighting) is fascinating, the cocktail menu is creative and dependable, and the wait staff are funky, cool, and efficient. i often reccomend this spot to those visiting memphis because it's so unique and yummy. great salads (grilled romaine), sandwiches (avocado BLT), crepe, pasta, and fancy grilled cheese specials, inventive brunch, truffel oil fries, and good old southern cakes for dessert."

  • "We were in Memphis for the first time (but not the last). We found the Open Table reviews for The Beauty Shop and decided to give it a shot. We were not disappointed. Being a couple of "Baby Boomer Foodies" we both remember actual beauty shops. Our cab driver filled us in on the Cooper-Young area of Memphis. Bohemian area with great restaurants. Upon arrival we immediately felt comfortable and were greeted warmly. Our waiter was "A Mississippi Boy" and he sure his way around food and wine. Man, he was all over that restaurant! He guided along with great recommendations that were right on the mark. We both had fish and both dishes were outstanding. His wine recommendations were right on the mark. An excellent dining experience for us both."

  • "First of all booking on line was one of the best ever options for a restaurant to have. Very simple and convenient. It made our dining experience better because we did not have to wait forever to get a table as some restaurants that are similar to the Beauty Shop make you do because of the first come, first serve, no reservations code. So great idea for reservation booking! Secondly, this was a great day out for the three of us. We needed it and the atmosphere was perfect. I think the building structure added to the level of chatter from folks being louder than it normally would be in most places but it added to the excitement of trying a new place. Our food was delicious and served in a timely manner. We had a great girls morning out!"
