Diner Reviews
  • "rustic..they get away with a lot..but great food..portions are very small and pricey. The views were great. Service just OK. If I hadn't read reviews I would definitely be put off by the small portions and rustic accommodations. Wait staff was not appropriately dressed. Bra and breast were clearly visible even my 27 year old daughter commented. Destination dining not a regular dining spot. Once is enough. If you don't bring your own alcohol or if you are a non drinker..they only beverages available are lemonade and iced tea!"

  • "No better view than outdoors at this place on a beautiful evening at sunset. Food was okay. Experience was great"

  • "Enchanting ambiance & delicious, creative food. Service a bit off, not on par with the quality of the food or reputation. Hostess who sat us expected me to squeeze into a very narrow space without moving a very large, long table to allow access (I'm thin, but not that thin). Had to prompt her a few times about the seating challenge and a solution. We requested our first 2 courses be brought out separately. However waitress appeared with plates only for our second course and asked how we enjoyed the first course, then didn't understand we had not even been served the first course yet. Didn't notice we didn't get first course. Asked for first course again before the second, only to get the second one before the first. Very polite but rushed."

  • "Wonderful dining... but remember it's a dry town. And you need to BYOB."

  • "Everything was very fresh and beautifully presented. Cheerful staff and service. I had two Jewish guests and there were only two items not he menu that they could eat as the offerings were dominated by shellfish and pork. That made our meal a little difficult. I also didn't know that it was BYOB. Somehow that information was lost in the shuffle."

  • "My husband and I have been coming to MV for years. On most trips we have eaten at The Beach Plum Inn. Even one of our relatives had their rehearsal dinner here. The restaurant has really taken a down turn. Menu is extremely limited and on the night we came, no seafood was offered as was in past. We could have split a chicken for $70! We got two appetizers which came to $30 for one person. Ambience is still there. Place is beautiful in evening but that is all I can say positive about restaurant as it is today. I would strongly discourage any friend of mine from going . I had to make sandwich when I got home as didn't get much to eat."

  • "We had a great night at the Beach Plum. The views are incredible and the food was amazing. Everything is fresh and local, and the chef does nothing to complicate the delicious and simple ingredients. I would go back again and again."

  • "We were seated outside, as requested. The outdoor dining tables were a bit too rustic. We brought our own wine; we both ordered salads as a first course. We had the entree roasted fluke for two. Waiter had no idea how to fillet the whole fish and we were happy another server could do this. We wondered where Burke's mind was that evening; it really wasn't on serving customers. So the food was a great experience, excellent roasted fluke but the waiter left a lot to be desired. He shouldn't be in a classy restaurant, Gloria C Manning"

  • "All amazing, memorable, wonderful except The striped bass in soup was a miss. Not summery and not powerfully flavorful (like everything else is). Better to have grilled or poached it and served on a bed of the garbanzos rather than submerge it in soup. It tasted OK . It was not visually appealing. This was my 2nd visit. I have booked 3 and 4 already."

  • "What happened to this beautiful restaurant? Only two entrees to pick from. Paying $34 for a chicken dish that was just ok was pretty disappointing. Are they under new management? Also to have an open kitchen in such a small and elegant space is a BAD idea. We won't be going back."

  • "Food was absolutely delicious. Portions were very small, but with money saved on byob this can be overlooked."

  • "This place captures the essence of the Vineyard I love. Casual elegance, delicious local veggies and fish. the wait staff couldn't be more attractive and good at their job. It is without a doubt my favorite restaurant on the Island. Having dinner looking down at the charming fishing village of Menemsha is a perfect combination. The tuna tartar was wonderful!"

  • "The "Beach Plum" has been discovered, which is hard to understand: it has always been here. A true "farm to table" restaurant, using only locally sourced food, particularly fruits, vegetables, and fish. "Cutting edge" in the best sense of the phrase. Highly recommended."

  • "Extremely disappointing. Shockingly stingy portions and extremely high prices. We understand that the economics of running a restaurant on Martha's Vineyard are challenging, especially in a part of the island that is BYOB, however, this restaurant needs consulting. Poorly organized and worded menu riddled with typos, very limited options (e.g. five entrees, two of which were chicken) even for a concept built around island-sourced food and amateurishly simple, underseasoned food, again (trust me, its bears repeating), in truly insultingly small portions (and were not exactly fressers). The grounds and view, however, are beautiful and the people-watching stellar."

  • "We were uncomfortable from the time we had a woman seat us displaying tatoos. When I see tatoos on wait staff, I wonder how clean the kitchen is. My wife's stomach was upset for most of the next day. She suspects it was caused by the fish she ate at your restaurant. On the plus side, the restaurant has a nice atmosphere and water view."

  • "First time on Martha's Vineyard wanted a nice place to eat. Very quaint setting of old mansion by the sea, staff friendly, allowed early seating. All stages of meal were small portions spinach Caesar bland, lamb rague and pasta came in good size soup bowl very Aldente and not a lot of lamb but what was there was tasty. Dessert was a chocolate almond pie that was very good and the only item that was close to expected serving size. My wife's dinner of Sea Bass was almost a 2x2 cube of fish more like what you get with a surf and turf order plus she struggled with her beet salad special and her dessert didn't have But a slice of a strawberry for topping. The staff was excellent and what was served mostly good but for the price I expected more"

  • "Very disappointing--the beet and feta salad looked and tasted ordinary, and the pasta guinea hen ragu was bland and uninteresting. This place is too expensive to be serving anything less than fantastic food."

  • "Being pescatarian, we had little to choose from. The salmon gravlax, cured with shiso leaves among other things, was good though mild and teeny portions. My husband had the spinach, chick peas and poached egg - delicious, reasonably large. We really enjoyed it last year. I had fluke, potatoes, with salsa verde and fava bean purée, very small and, I thought, ill conceived. Whatever recipe you use, Italian salsa verde is a bit piquant- capers, garlic and red wine vinegar, while fava bean purée's appeal is chalky blandness. Combined it was pretty but the two were indistinguishable and bland. Being hungry, we split an OK strawberry shortcake. It's nice to bring our own wine, as in the past. The ambiance is wonderful."

  • "My wife and I went to the Bach Plum for out 33rd anniversary. We've been going for special nights for many of those 33 years, through different owners and chefs. This time did not disappoint. When being seated at an awkward large table, the hostess graciously accommodated our request to move to window table for two. We had a lovely view as the sun set over Menemsha harbor. It was replaced with a beautiful crescent moon and the Gay Head light revolving in the distance. The salads and pork tenderloin special that we had were excellent--not over prepared--but simply done to bring out their flavors and freshness. Desserts (Chocolate Tart for my wife and a Rhubarb pastry for me) with coffee were a wonderful ending. BYOB helps on cost."

  • "We been going to Beach Plum Inn restaurant every few years for over 30 years (whenever we would visit Martha's Vineyard). It had always been a great Down Island destination.....until this last visit; limited menu with strange items offered (and printed using an old typewriter - almost illegible). Food was poorly prepared, very unappetizing. We both agree the it was the worst meal we have had in a long time."

  • "Food was delicious and very inventive but portions were so skimpy, we left and went for pizza to satisfy our hunger, even after an appetizer, salad and main. For the high prices, the portions should not be so tiny. Restaurants of this caliber typically offer something - amuse bouche or at least bread...nothing was offered and then we were overcharged for two of the 5 items we ordered. Great location, ambiance, service and food flavors but poor value due to very chintzy portion sizes. (And we are fit foodies who don't over eat)"

  • "Very special experience and meal. Delicious food. Local and fresh. Carefully edited menu. Perfect portions. Asparagus with mint and a soft cooked egg. Linguine with mussels razor clams and lobster butter. Roast pork with fennel salad. Rhubarb galette and honey pie. With spectacular view. Warm friendly service. Looking forward to our next visit. "

  • "The appetizer-smoked bluefish crostino-was very good. The entrees-fresh pork and lobster in butter- had no discernable seasonings. They were ordinary, not something you'd expect from a restaurant that had been reviewed so well in the New York Times. We were disappointed."

  • "The menu at this usually fine restaurant was inadequate. The staff kept rushing us through the dinner, grabbing our plates and rushing the courses which led to an unpleasant and unsavory experience. . ."

  • "The restaurant came with a great review in the NY Times however the food was only average and poorly presented. This would have been OK if there had been time to talk, enjoy the ambience, enjoy your wine. However the two courses were over and we were out the door within 1 hour. Looking around this seemed the norm rather than exception. I just wish that US restaurateurs would learn that people like to sit over a meal and make it an occasion, not feel as if they are in a cafeteria that has 1000 people to feed in a lunch hour."

  • "Food was everything we hoped it would be. Fresh, locally sourced, beautifully prepared and delicious. The seats looking into the kitchen are wonderful. Fabulous evening. Remember to BYOB - food this good deserves a fine wine."

  • "My husband and I have been going to the Beach Plum for 10 + years now. Every year we come to Martha's Vineyard for a week or two to celebrate our birthdays. (We were born the same year, same month 2 days apart). We go to the Beach Plum for a celebration dinner. We make our reservations so that we can catch the sunset, we bring our own fabulous wine and order something different from the menu each year. This year we were surprised with a new decor, a new chef and a new menu, but we were not disappointed. We hope that you will try this restaurant for your celebration, no matter what it is for."

  • "We almost left before ordering as the menu is so limited. We have been to the restaurant many times. The location is beautiful. The decor changed this year and the table design (a large common table) no one wants to sit at taking up much of the dining room. The menu is difficult. I understand farm to table, But this is lacking. This had two fish entrees, a shared chicken, shared pork porterhouse, a few salads and that was it. I know now why they don't publish their menu in advance! One server opened the wine and talked with us about the menu, he was great. Our assigned server was scattered and fair at best. Considering the food, expense, drive, and overall experience we will not be returning unless things change dramatically."

  • "Very limited menu selections. Quite pricey for what you get. A charming location but without the sunset nothing special. We were not impressed with their minimalist decor and food."

  • "We were very disappointed this visit. We've been going to the Beach Plum for 10 years, and it was always our favorite restaurant on the Vineyard. We requested (through Open Table) to sit outside to see the sunset, but we were seated inside without any explanation even though there was plenty of available seating outside. It's American cuisine, but there was no beef on the menu, and no lobster! The menu was very limited in our view. We won't be rushing back next year."

  • "BPR has a great setting - tranquil with a beautiful view of Menemsha. It is BYOB which has its benefits. The service was pleasant. However, the menu is very limited with a lack of description or organization. The ahi tuna appetizer was ok - too much sauce vs. allowing the essence of the fish to shine through - and I wish the fennel appetizer had more cheese. The entree, however, was the major disappointment. The beef looked and tasted more like a pork chop with little to no seasoning. The kale and green beans accompanying the beef lacked seasoning and overwhelmed the dish; the beans were also raw. We left without trying dessert (which is rare for us) as this had been one of the most disappointing meals my husband and I had in a long time."

  • "The preparation of the food from 2012 to 2013 has declined drastically. The "farm to table" food is all drenched in sauces and oils and takes away from the natural flavors of the food. We were so looking forward to our best meal on the island and walked away completed disappointed. The staff was also repeatedly forgetful and not well trained."
