Diner Reviews
  • "We love the Basin. The food and service are always fabulous. Our last visit was great. Our server, Adam, was friendly and attentive and took good care of us."

  • "I have gone to The Basin numerous times over the last 10 years and I have always loved their food. Took my family there for a special birthday dinner and nobody liked their food at our table. The menu has changed, and I don't fault that, but the food was bland and tasted strange. The halibut was a nice piece and cooked perfectly but it was just mounded over some boring couscous with no veggies on the side. Anyway, extremely disappointed now."

  • "We love this spot. The ambiance is great, the bar is awesome and the bartenders are fabulous. Graham took care of us this weekend and treated us like we were the only patrons. I could go on but try it for yourself. Kyle & Shari"

  • "Always enjoy fantastic food and the service is remarkable. Pretty much anything on the menu can be altered for gluten free as well- a big plus for us. Very quickly became one of our favorites and now the Basin has the number 1 place on our list!"

  • "Excellent bartender lady and the food was very good, presented well and delicious. I'd go back. Interesting in that the tab for two was about $160. We had four glasses of wine and two entrees. So, pony up and enjoy the quality as it's a bit on the pricey side."

  • "I simply love dining here. Each and every time. The staff is so knowledgeable and friendly. They never fail to impress me with an excellent wine choice as well. So much so, that I've taken to just letting them pick something for our table. The food is superb. They have some staples as well as quite an array of things that rotate through seasonally. In the South Bay, it's clearly one of the very best places to eat, period."

  • "A little gem in the heart of old Saratoga. What we loved about The Basin were all the unusual offerings that you just don't see everyday. They have really distinguished themselves with delicious American-Spanish-Continental cuisine. Our waiter was extremely helpful with recommendations based on our needs and preferences...not his own. And he was spot on with every dish. Be sure to try the trout and the duck entrees and the tuna cruda appetizer."

  • "Three of us went to The Basin for the first time, and we were celebrating a birthday. Josh, our server, was very friendly and efficient. He rattled off the specials like a real professional. Each of our entrees was very good but not as savory as we had expected from the other reviews."

  • "We have eaten here many times, each time the food taste like it came from different restaurant, ranging from very good to bordering on sending all the food back to the kitchen, this time we had a guest in from out of town. He ordered the skirt steak, to say it was not good would be an underestimate, poorly seasoned and enough vinegar to almost taste pickled. It will be a long while before we venture here again. The Manager walks around as if he is running a Michelin starred place, not even close"

  • "We love The Basin. Consistent, great quality food. The food and the wine list lean toward mostly Spanish. Great wine selection and the service staff and the owner are especially helpful and really made the wine selection interesting and successful. For appetizers the Forest Pizza was delicious and the oysters were fresh and tasty. For the main course our group ordered the Slow Braised Short Ribs, Skirt Steak and Spring Chicken were all memorable. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "Not a bad experience but I wasn't impress at all. I have eaten much better for the price."

  • "I want to love it here, but just don't. Have eaten here maybe 5 times over the past 5 or 6 years, so not that frequently, and it just doesn't wow me. It is an expensive restaurant....last meal was $80 per person. For that price, I have higher expectations. It's a nice place, and the food is good, don't get me wrong.....It just is not as good as it is pricey."

  • "I follow a Paleo diet and it is very difficult to eat out. The Basin is wonderful for me. The food is very fresh, organic and delicious. I had the boneless Trout with Kale and it was fabulous. The portions sizes are just right so I felt pleasantly full but not stuffed. We also tried the Cailiflower appetizer. It sounds a bit odd but was also absolutely delicious. This is our second time at the Basin. The service is always very attentive, effieicent and friendly. This is definitely one of our favorite restaurant in the Los Gatos/Saratoga area."

  • "Everything about our evening at the Basin was perfect. We all started with delicious appetizers and hand-crafted drinks. The brie and kale was superb. Each of us ordered different entrees and the portions are very generous. Each dish perfectly prepared - try the scallops amazing. The steak was enormous and the duck moist and succulent. My halibut perfectly grilled. We shared a special bottle of wine and enjoyed shared desserts. Our waiter is new but delightful. Insightful on dish selection and perfectly attentive. We dine out often and often I am disappointed. Not here. It was really, really good."

  • "Never had a Tri-tip so tender! My wife's scallop with a crab cake risotto was the BEST she has ever had! GO EAT AT THE BASIN!"

  • "The Basin on a Saturday night is pleasantly busy, which makes for a fun atmosphere. Cocktails are about as good as they get. The cauliflower appetizer, tri tip special, and trout were all perfect. The oysters in the oyster appetizer tasted great but were tiny. The bread pudding was fine, but not special. Overall a fun, well priced, evening and a strong recommendation for The Basin!"

  • "The Basin is home away from home. Wonderful staff, wonderful food, wonderful outdoor deck with heaters and a grand old Oak tree. Love the Wedge salad, the mac, the Coq au vin, the Swiss Blanket. The Chocolate Bomb is delicious for dessert! Oh, and The Basin also makes the best Lemon Drop Martini I've found. Enjoy!"

  • "Great food! Inconsistent service- Slow service when the restaurant was slow and slow service when restaurant was packed. But if you want good food, I'd highly recommend the place. Bartenders attentive in beginning, but stopped pouring water as we stayed to talk a bit more. We're regulars- sometimes, they're fabulous all night. Just not consistent. Won't prevent us from going back."

  • "Always a great choice. Even on Valentines Day the food and service was excellent. We had relaxing drinks at the bar, were seated on time and they served all of their usual great menu items. We return often."

  • "This restaurant needs 3 dollar signs. We were blown away by the bill! ON the positive side, the restaurant was very good. Loved the coziness and exclusivity of the place. The cod was excellent. The wine was impeccable! The service was pretty good. Our waiter was very attentive. Overall we had a great time!"

  • "A unique menu - you don't always get the mashed potatoes and mixed veges with your entrée. It keeps things interesting. They have the best steak in town - a giant New York, but everything else we've tried has been good. Try the cauliflower appetizer. If I would have know it was so good, I would have had it for my entrée. They always have a new flavor of homemade ice cream. Doesn't always sound like it would be good as ice cream, but turns out to be great."

  • "The atmosphere at The Basin was neighborly; the bar was full with locals, the dining room half full with casual diners of all ages. We were seated right away and presented with an appetizing menu and very nice selection of specials. The noise level was to the point of distracting; we all needed to lean into the table to hear one another, but we got used to it after a while. The food was good (I ordered the tri-tip special), but not great. The seasoning was a bit dull and the meat was a bit tougher than I care for. The seafood pasta was very nice with more spice than the tri-tip. I would enjoy going there on occasion (not special occasions) as a local neighborhood spot."

  • "We ate as a group of four celebrating a birthday prior to attending a concert. The fact that they request that you let them know you need to get to an event is a plus. We were very pleasantly expected and welcomed, and the food and our waitress were both outstanding. The birthday girl was especially well treated. All in all, it was a fine evening of food, wine, and music."

  • "We usually eat ou in Saratoga before a concert, and this was no exception. When I booked at the Basin, what I didn't expect was an exceptional meal! The food was superb, interesting wine choices and good advice, and excellent service (attentive, but not fawning, and perfect pacing)! I'm convinced and next time we go to Saratoga, the primary destination will be the Basin. Bravo!"

  • "We booked a luxe room at the Saratoga Oaks & made reservations for an intimate dinner at the Basin for a quiet and much anticipated romantic New Year's Eve away from all of the holiday hustle. Capped off with breakfast and a latte at the Big Basin Cafe, our one-mile-away-from-home get-away was fabulous! Thanks, Basin staff, for spoiling us with that fabulous scallops & Dungeness crab dinner!"

  • "A new year has inspired new menu items and they are all pretty good (except that roasted fennel - pretty bland but volcanic hot! I burned my finger on the bowl) Four of us ate there on 12/29 and except for the fennel, everything was great! I had the special ling cod and it was perfect. The Basin is my "go to" restaurant in the South Bay."

  • "We save going to The Basin for Christmas Eve, but I think we need to find somewhere else in Saratoga to eat before church. Having told our waiter that we had an hour and a half to dine, it took him 30 minutes to take our order. The timing was off on everything which left us no time for dessert or coffee, that was a shame. The food we ordered ended up nothing like the menu description, substitutions were made without letting us know. That was a problem for my husband because the substitution ended up being kale which is a dietary restriction for him. Next time we will pass and go across the street."

  • "We had a server who was either new or just didn't know the menu and didn't pay attention. We had to ask the manager for addistance a couple of times, to open our wine that was just sitting next to our table and to ask for the bill. Our server disappeared at the end of our meal. The manager was awesome and took the appetizer and dessert off if our bill which he didn't need to do."

  • "We tried out The Basin years ago right after they opened and loved it and in all the visits over the many years since, we've never been disappointed. The menu always works for us because it's full of things we know and love and also things we've never tried."

  • "My daughter and I loved the food. My albacore tuna was absolutely divine. But my son and husband had to send back their salads (overwhelming anchovy taste, even I didn't like it) and my husband's steak was so tough that he couldn't eat it. When we got home, they made themselves ham sandwiches. Also, the atmosphere was ridiculously loud. We had to lean in and shout to hear one another."
