  • "The noise level was the only downside of our otherwise fantastic dining experience. My Moscow Mule was perfect and a good size! The lightly cooked veggie salad was so savory. The house-cured salmon paired very well with the Brie. But it was a Monday and not that crowded....and yet not being able to hear each other was a drag. Service was so friendly, left us alone to enjoy our meal (which I like!), and everything else was great."

  • "We liked our dinner here very much. The variety of entrees was excellent. The execution of the food was excellent as well. My only problem with this place is the wine list. Not enough affordable options. We ordered a bottle of Macrostie Chard at $52 and it was one of the least expensive on the list. It's a very good wine and is likely only slightly overpriced. We noticed that not too many tables had wine bottles on them--people were choosing to order by the glass instead. Seems to me that a restaurant with this quality of food would have a bottle of wine on every table. Some wines in the $30s would probably solve that problem."

  • "The only time I typically make it to The Basin is just before a concert at the Mountain Winery. This time was the same. We met friends and were seated in the front dining area (I always forget to request the rear rooms or the deck-shame on me). Unfortunately, our server was not impressive. She never asked for our drink order and didn't keep us informed about the timing of our meals. We were not part of the group of people that had to be at the concert at the beginning so I can't attribute the lack of good service to a being there at a busy time. I will go back for another function and hope we have much better service."

  • "Great place to have dinner before a Mountain Winery concert. The staff will ask if you're going so that there's no last minute rush. Much much better than eating at the Winery. The scallops are fantastic, cooked perfectly with nice caramelization on the outside but tender and succulent on the inside. Served with a jalapeño beau blanc sauce that's just a little spicy , perfect."

  • "We had reservation through OpenTable for my husband's birthday dinner with friends, but when we showed up on time, the host asked us to wait and it was 20 min. before we get a table... the food were not as good as we had before. The bread came with a dish of olive oil only, no balsamic vinegar or butter till we asked; beet salad was the worst... the take out beet salad from market was better than they served. Tri-tip was 'interesting' (my husband's exact word), meaning bad! Duck and trout were tasty, kale was okay but mushrooms had weird taste... we had no desire for dessert after the meal. We won't go back for a long long while."

  • "Celebrate birthday. Started off with a martini that was so-so and not near chilled enough. I wanted a glass of Sauvignon Blanc and they had none. Limited menu and they were out of scallops at 6:30. There main steak offering is 22 oz which is way to big for most. The other beef was tri-tip which I can do well at home. We split a delicious beet salad. I ordered the Bowl of Soul which was good but could use a little seasoning. "Soul" suggests spices. It had shrimp and halibut with a nice rice in the soup. Wife had the trout. Came out with part under cooked and had a half plate of green stuff (kale?). The manager was very responsive to the problem and offer several solutions. Finished off with a birthday complimentary dessert that my wife loved"

  • "This was our third visit to The Basin and it was a disappointment. The Caesar salads for $11 were small and had an ingredient in the dressing that seemed sweet and out of place. My wife's tri-tip was 3 or 4 small pieces of meat and a pile of kale. My rigatoni with mushrooms was way too salty. Service was OK and we did take a while to order, but then it was a least 20 minutes before we were served our salads. We probably will not return to The Basin. Regarding the wine list, I'm guessing that the decision has been made to make at least $20 profit on every bottle of wine, either through the corkage fee or a wine list that essentially starts at $40."

  • "My son and I left college hungry. We were tired, and I was dusty from my ceramics class. We needed to find a place to have dinner, and chose The Basin. We were treated as valued guests from the moment we set foot in the restaurant. They treated my son respectfully, and didn't seem to take notice of my dusty state in any way. The food was absolutely delicious. We both enjoyed our meals. The staff checked up on us frequently, and made sure we had plenty to drink. We had the molten chocolate cake for dessert, and it was amazing. Our experience was so great that we are taking the whole family there next time. I recommend The Basin, and am sure you'll have a wonderful time."

  • "It was a Monday night and it was pretty full. The waiter explained the specials and highly recommended their BBQ tri tip. I chose that and my husband the halibut special. The tri tip looked like a steam roller had got to it. It was topped with a BBQ sauce that tasted like ketchup. I think I've had better airplane food. Very disappointed. This was our third visit. Two previous visits the food was good but pricey. Must be the neighborhood. I don't think I would return."

  • "This was our second time to the Basin within a few weeks. Both nights were so wonderful. We had really great attentive waiters who offered great wine suggestions and were always checking on us without us feeling like they were hovering. The food was amazing - I ended up having the rainbow trout both nights and it practically melted in my mouth. I would have a hard time not ordering it again because it was so good. The appetizers are on the small side but in the end, it ended up being just fine because we had plenty of food by the time the night was over. We definitely look forward to making this a regular spot!"

  • "We celebrated my wife's birthday. We sat on the outside patio which was noticeably less noisy then the inside seating. It's about the only restaurant I found in the area were you can go dressed up and not feel overdressed. The food was fabulous. I had the NY Cut which was cooked perfectly. My wife had the pork tenderloin and it was delicious. They brought my wife a birthday dessert, which was a real nice touch. It's pricey so it's one of those places you go for that special occasion. I would definitely eat there again."

  • "We thought the food was great, however was a bit disappointed with the ambience. I noted it was our 20th wedding anniversary on the reservation and was hoping to have better seating since I made the reservation long ago (they didn't even mention our anniversary). We were seated next to a window which had flies and gnats flying around our food and in our wine, it was very dark (shades were closed), and were in the middle of the dinning area so it was busy around us. Service was okay until the end when it was time to get our check and our waiter seemed to have disappeared for a long time. I would have chosen another place for our special day."

  • "we expected more... ordered the roasted duck and halibut (special of the day).. the halibut was a bit brand... the duck and the sauce was soooo delicious!!! however, it comes with some beans that was cold and didn't taste that good. we also ordered the kale as side and it was pretty good as well. we told the restaurant it was our wedding anniversary (from opentable booking) but the server did not treat us any special..."

  • "The food is excellent at the Basin. Better yet, it's quiet. So many restaurants today expect you to rush through your meal with a roar of sound around you. At the Basin you can enjoy your food and your company peaceful without roaring noise or rush. The waiter recommended several items on the menu and they were all excellent. The outdoor seating is perfect this time of year - beautiful and peaceful and natural - no fuss. Extra care is taken with the food and service. The wine list is eclectic - you won't find a standard generic list but something more international and customized to to the food on the menu. All in all, this is a favorite gem and we will go back again and again."

  • "It was very crowded for a Sunday. I found out later that there was a pre-show crowd going to a concert at Montalvo. The hostess was a bit rude so that set us off on the wrong foot. Typically service is better so the heavy crowd and the rush they caused to get in and out quickly may have put the staff on edge. The food, as always, was delicious. We've been here many times and will come again. "

  • "We went there prior to a Mountain Winery show. The waiter was very considerate about our time constraints, but we didn't feel rushed. He noticed the music playing too loudly from a speaker behind me and made an adjustment without being prompted. Food great. Wine list a little expensive, but we brought our own to be corked. Lovely evening!"

  • "We decided to get away for a weekend in Saratoga and booked The Basin for our first evening there. They were super crowded and the hostess asked if we wanted to be seated on the patio. SUPER CHOICE as the noise level was much lower and allowed for quiet conversation. The waiter was very attentive and not at all pushy. The food was absolutely perfect. Excellent cocktails and nice -not-too-pricey- wine selection. We will return."

  • "We've had good experiences there before but this time our foodserver was on the pretentious side (don't refer to women as "would the lady like pepper?") and the food was extremely unimpressive. He also neglected to inform us that virtually the entire seafood part of the menu was "not available" until we'd all already decided on those courses (that should be the first thing you say when you greet your diners). Additionally, despite a very early reservation, it took a VERY long time to get cocktails and to get served. All in all we were disappointed as the cost did not match the quality."

  • "The Basin never disappoints. We ate outdoors on their patio and it was perfect. Sarah made great recommendations. Salmon special appetizer...a take on salmon with cream cheese but with caramelized onions a Brie...was amazing! Tri tip, perfect. Martini sand whiskey smash, great. Adult ice cream...this time strawberry with sherry drizzled over it...was a great way to end a perfect meal."

  • "Our neighborhood gem is The Basin, and we hadn't been able to go for a couple of months. After last week's dinner, I remember why we love the place! Incredible food, fabulous wine, impeccable (but California Casual, not stuffy/pretentious) service. Pacing: just right. Noise level: energetic but not too loud. From the fish selections (always sustainably caught, off-the-boat fresh) to the mushroom rigatoni (really, it's worth the carbs) to the liver and onions with bacon, this is hands down one of our all time favorite places to celebrate.. or just have a great dinner. Super busy on the weekend. Book a weekday reservation for a quieter, leisurely dinner, then stroll around DT Saratoga for a romantic date night. Valet parking close by."

  • "We went for a birthday dinner, but we immediately regretted it. We ordered several apps, the beet salad, mushroom pasta and special tri-top. Food was good enough, but did not seem aligned with the prices. It was also quite noisy inside and out, I mean so much that we couldn't hear each other across the table at times. Nice patio courtyard area, but the inside is dated, I thought the overall ambiance was going to be so much more cozy based on where it is, and what I had heard. Unfortunately, if I go back, it will only be to the bar. "

  • "Our dinner party of four sat on the interior patio, under a lovely old oak, and in a quiet corner ~ from the appetizers (asparagus, cauliflower, and gruyere wrapped in spinach ~ each with a delicious sauce) to our entrees of calzone, penne and mushroom, and pasta arabbiata, the vegetarian meal was superb, and beautifully presented. We shared molten chocolate cake and panna cotta for dessert, and fairly rolled out of the restaurant en route to a concert. All four of us will gladly return to the Basin! While the food was the star of the evening, the fine supporting players were every member of the wait staff: friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful."

  • "The service was excellent, the appetizers fantastic. Their califlower, Swiss blanket and paeia dish were the best. Dinner - the trout was light and moist and their steaks delicious. The only thing that was great were their truffle fries. They weren't very flavorful and they came out cold. Also my skirt steak came with fries and I would have appreciated a suggestion if greens instead. "
