If you're happy to sit for long periods of time sipping really great wine, this is the place for you. If you like your food to come relatively quickly, don't bother, you will be irritated.

So glad we finally remembered to come here. It won't be our last visit for sure! Limited food menu but it is really all about sampling the wines from featured regions so the supporting role makes sense. Deciding which of the many and distinct flights to choose is the real challenge. The server- and maybe co-owner?- is very knowledgeable so it pays to ask away before deciding. The food was tasty and well prepared- my lamb chop cooked as requested with just enough supporting veg. Not a mega-portion. The flan dessert had a subtle citrus cast that made it a standout. AND they read the Open Table request to fuss over a birthday. Thank you! Love wine? I mean ALL good wine, then give this place a try for sure.

Our dinner couldn't have been more lovely. The waiter was a real gem - he was both very personable as well as informative. His service was only topped by the food. A very interesting menu with wine pairings. I highly recommend this restaurant for all types of events. Definitely a foodie paradise.

Barrel Room is a demanding concept for its staff: every few months the menu/wine list completely change focus. Right now (Aug) it's Spain/Portugal, so popular they hope to extend to Nov (next up is Eastern Med--Turkey, Croatia, et.al.). GO NOW--the Spanish menu is small but excellent. Skip the paella, good but average. Charcuterie, bocquerones (fresh sardines), frisee salad, tri-tip (mains are very generously sized; share one if you have the charcuterie which is substantial)--all were 5-star. We eat all over the Bay Area; this is the best food in Oakland so far (over Commis, Oliveto, Centouno, Hopscotch, etc.). Ask waiters for reco's; they know their food/wine pairings. Hard ciders for your designated driver--Poma Aurea was lovely!

The Barrel Room is a genuinely great addition to the College Avenue Oakland/Berkeley eating scene. The food and wine changes quarterly (right now they feature Spain/Portugal) and the quality and tastiness is simply outstanding. Equally pleasant, you can actually hear what your partner is saying! Finally, a restaurant for adults who don't want to shout above the din and noise and music. The Barrel Room is a real pleasant treat. Don't miss it. It beats the Hell out of Box and Bells (crappy food and even worst service) just down the block...

This has become a "go-to" place. The rotating wine list has always been very good (especially the Italian, Slovakian, French and now Spanish). The food dishes are very interesting and support the wine. Price points on food and wine are very reasonable for what you get.
