First time on Open Table and we liked it. I had the lamb chops which were amazing! My wife had the sole I believe and she agreed hers was great too. The GM was walking around the place meeting and greeting as well as the owner. Very lively place with plenty of wines to choose from. Really enjoyed the ambience with all of the brick in the building. Plenty of people around enjoying a bottle of wine along with appetizers at the open seating area. This will now be on our rotation of places to go. If you are not too familiar with the area, you should skip trying to find parking and valet at the next building over. Of course we were there on a Friday around Christmas making it more of a challenge.

We had wanted to try this restaurant for quite some time, with a reservation we got seated on a cold night on the patio, the service was extremely slow. The music on the patio was loud as well as the traffic, not the ambiance for the amount spent. The food was good, good wine list, however we will never go back.

My fiance and I went here for our anniversary on Friday night and really enjoyed it. The ambiance in the restaurant was perfectly romantic. Dim lit, intimate, and great wine list. The food was really good, but before ordering the "Cajun Peel and Eat" (appetizer), just know that those jumbo shrimp come with the shell still on. A bit messy to eat, however very tasty! The coolest part about the restaurant was the "wine sampler bar" which allows you to select from several different wines from a bar/machine. When you pay your bill at the end, you are then charged for whichever wine(s) you helped yourself to. If you're into wine, this is a great place to come to. My fiance and I will definitely come back again!

We are patrons of this restaurant and am so glad that they have started to focus more on the quality of their dishes by slimming the menu. The food is definitely improving; much better appetizers, especially the southern shrimp which are outstanding. However, they need to do some tasting of their main courses. The scallops are great, but the bedding sauce is tasteless and not very pleasing to the eye. The side sauce with the shrimp is also tasteless. The ribs are still too dry. The burger is true to its name; it is the best I've had; truly great as are the fries. The deserts are also very good. The wine is priced fairly and the staff really works hard. Oh yes, the bread is outstanding. Keep getting better; we remain loyal.

I enjoyed the ambiance of the restaurant and I thought our server was extremely helpful in educating my wife about wine. She actually wouldn't come near the stuff until we visited the restaurant and was introduced to a style that she likes. The food however was just so-so. I ordered the ribs and my wife had the salmon. Neither would be considered spectacular. I was really hoping this place would be one that we might become regulars at but the food was mediocre at best.

We were there to celebrate a special birthday. The service was very good and made my 16 year old niece feel very grown up. The food was good, and the pacing between the appetizer, entree and dessert was just right. The Black Forrest Cake was excellent and the perfect size to share. The only complaint we had was that brunch wasn't available on Saturday, and the web-site hadn't been updated.

Loved our experience dining in this neighborhood gem. Wonderful variety of menu items for lunch and especially enjoyed our pasta, gaspaho soup, wedding soup and caesar salad. Not only is the food incredible, but the service conducted by our outstanding waiter, David was noteworthy. We truly felt we were dining in a 5 star establishment with the fine service David provided us. Job well done

We love The Barrel Room (Two 40 South) -- Dylan is a fabulous head chef!! Always creating scrumptious dining options. The wine has been re-priced. . .or more accurately. . .less expensive wines have been included in the Machine (Diners get a card and can 'help themselves' to a taste, a half glass, or a full glass). At dinner this time, we had wines that cost $30 and $25 per glass, and a $6 per glass wine -- all good choices. Nice, quiet atmosphere where conversation is encouraged. Outside on the patio, we noticed a painting class happening; we thought the amateurs were fabulous (with a bit of encouragement from the talented teacher). Next time, we'll have some wine and do some painting! Or, just sit and eat, drink and enjoy the merriment!

The new owner, manager & chef at The Barrel Room have breathed life into a restuarant locals fears would not survive. Dinner with friends was excellent, all 4 of us enjoyed our meals and agreed portions were able, a good value overall. Next visit we plan to sit on the side patio. The environment looked even more inviting than the previous layout. An enjoyable experience, we will definitely return.

Nothing. My mother and I love wine so what place better than Barrel Room? Priding themselves as a wine influenced restaurant, I expected at a glass of wine within the first 20 minutes after our arrival. This didn't happen. With ~6-10 guests in the restaurant (given it was a Tuesday night) I would expect service to be more prompt and more organized in approach. After being seated, a couple next to us were in constant complaint regarding the wine they chose and was served. After this, the food they were served wasn't what they requested as well. Needless to say, I was hesitant on my choice of appetizer and dinner. I wish I could say our experience was different..don't go here.. experienced same as guests next to us. TERRIBLE

    OpenTable Diner Since 2006
    Dined on 8/16/2013
This place has huge potential but lacks leadership. Many of the workers there are simply walking around looking for something to do. I brought in a fine bottle of wine only to have it poured too high into our glasses. The last pour was way too much in my dates glass and way too little in mine...and the bottle empty. The food is too heavy...greasy. Not like and delectable. It just wasn't the experience I was looking for. New ownership using old menu's tells me that the new owner entered without the real funds needed to make this a new restaurant. It is renamed so I would assume that was the intent. It's a great looking place and has lots of potential. Where's the owner?

I was looking forward to going after it's been about a year since my last visit. Our server Andrew was great but the food for the price was just ok...when I go to a restaurant and the bill for 2 is 175.00 w/o tip I want to say "that was great!" When they first opened a few years ago I had one of the best meals and service ever and I walked up to the open kitchen to let the Chef know, but this was not the case this time. Also, there was what seemed like management walking around with a "sowel" look on his face, not very inviting! With all the choices in Brea unfortunately I wont be back.

We usually dine here on weekends, and the place is usually jumping. We took advantage of the "half-off" wine Wednesday and now we know why the wine is on sale. Wednesdays are very slow. I actually felt sorry for the staff (especially the kitchen), as they were ready to go with no customers. Hopefully business will pick up a bit on weeknights.....

First of all parking was difficult. The restaurant atmoshere was outstanding; decor, lighting and seating arrangement was fantastic. Though the appetizers were better than the entrees, which was served lukewarm. Didn't try desserts since the food portions were fairly generous. The best were the flatbreads, which were like thin pizzas. The wine tasting concept is unique ,have to admit. It's a nice place to hang out especially if you enjoy wine. The bar area is exceptionally inviting and the bar itself is gorgeous.

I dined here with three friends last week for dinner. We ordered an appetizer that included pita bread, hummus, salsa, and guacamole. It was very good. We also enjoyed a great bottle of cabernet. We tried it first from the self-serve wine tasting machine. Two of my friends hadn't been to this wine bar before so I showed them how it worked. You are given a card to put into the machine which keeps tabs on your pours. You can choose from 40 or so white and red wines. It's a lot of fun to try different wines this way. The service was great, too. I definitely suggest that you try this restaurant!

Upon completely my reservation on opentable, i had explained in special requests that it was my girlfriend's and my anniversary, and the restaurant was kind enough to set up an amazing ambiance with extra candles at our table, along with every employee who served us wishing us a happy anniversary, it was definately something i will remember and be appreciative of, as they made our night that much more special. I would recommend this place for anyone looking for a nice place out, were the food and service is great, but still without killing your pocket. Great barrel wine

I went to lunch with a party of four (including me). We went at 1:45 on a Sunday afternoon, and as far as we could see, we were the only ones there! I guess it is much busier in the evenings or during the week for lunch. The food was alright. I ordered the Chicken Caesar Salad...It was rather small but very tasty. It came with two crostini with cheese and herbs on them. Others had the vegetarian omelet, Strawberry green salad and the Ricotta Lemon Pancakes. The omelet was good but I tasted the potatoes, and personally, I thought they were the best thing served! The pancakes were liked very much, the Strawberry Salad was just okay. Service was very good. Would rather have had the regular lunch menu instead of Brunch one.

We went for Sunday brunch. The food was just boring. The place was almost empty the entire time we were there which was from 1:30-6:00. Towards the end, a few people started coming in and hanging out at the bar. I could have made the same omelets and burgers at home. The dining room is pretty and romantic with its semi-private cabana-style tables and high ceiling but the food is just missing the wow factor. Nothing we ate made us want to return. I had the sausage omelet with glazed bacon on the side and my husband had the breakfast burger (included a fried egg on the meat patty). Our friends had similar meals. No one was impressed. Oh well.

Restaurant has recently changed hands and has a new menu. My husband loved his meaty meats pizza and thought the sauce on the shrimp appetizer was yummy, but upset it was not served with any bread to dip in it. However, the rest of the food was just so so. My daughter's flatbread had neither the broccolini nor prosciutto listed on the menu, just way too much cheese with a few pieces of broccoli, and my $26.00 salmon was a small dry slab atop a large pile of pasta. The wine in the dispenser seems very overpriced. e.g. $30.00 a glass for a wine that retails for $39.99 a bottle. In contrast, the bottle of wine we ordered off the large list was reasonably priced. Maybe in time things will get better, but I don't think we would return.
