Diner Reviews
  • "If you want a good wine list, excellent service and fancier fare this is not the place. To be fair it is right by the pool area and very casual. I wouldn't seek it out but if you're at the hotel already or near by it's satisfactory."

  • "If you stick to the simpler items on the menu, the Backyard won't disappoint. Good drinks. The salmon was not so good....farmed salmon, with a weird smoky tomato grit side dish that didn't enhance the flavor. The spinach and tomatoes, which would have been a nice addiction, we're over powered by dehydrated garlic."

  • "The Backyard at the W is a perfect setting for a lazy brunch with a pleasant staff, a great spicy bloody mary and a fun little menu for our little dogs. The omelette I had was fairly average but tasty and my husband had a breakfast pizza which was a better call. Will definitely return!"

  • "A lovely pool adjacent outdoor venue for lunch. Food was very good; service after they noticed us was also. Not a great value frankly."

  • "This has always been my go to place to meet friends for lunch. We were there on Saturday, and it was terrible. The service was poor. We ordered Chopped chicken salad, which you would think has chicken. The salads arrived without any chicken. When we inquired, we were brought a small bowl of schredded chicken to mix ourselves. I was astonished that there was no apology, nor did they take it back to the kitchen to make properly. Another guest ordered an omelet, which was so small, he was still hungry. We waited a 1/2 hour after we ordered, for our dessert and coffee. Fortunately, it was a social lunch and we were not in a hurry, but I'm not sure I will return anytime soon. In the summer, it should be tops!"

  • "A friend and I went to the "Happy Hour" which had extremely limited and very pricey drink and food menus. The Happy Hour cocktail list included one drink: a rum punch that had a slight aftertaste of coconut dish soap (or what I would guess what coconut dish soap tastes like). We were told that the happy hour drink rotates nightly...they basically have a drink-of-the-day. So if you don't like the selection, you are left with their regular drink list (very pricey). There were also three happy hour generic wines. The food options were equally disappointing. Considering it was a busy night at the Geffen, you'd think the W would try to capitalize on the theater crowd by offering a better experience."

  • "An abysmally incompetent waiter ruined the evening. If there was a trained wait staff coordinated with the kitchen, then perhaps the courses would have been served in the right order and the food would not have turned cold. The Hotel patio is pleasant but the management is blowing it."

  • "Lovely, outdoor California dining experience, poolside, surrounded by lush landscaping at the W Hotel in Westwood. Very trendy and elegantly casual. Nice menu selection including pizza, sandwiches, salads and several beef, chicken and fish entrees. A delightful experience."

  • "So disappointed in the service at The back Yard at the W in Westwood. Had my daughters college graduation dinner party there. It took forever to get drinks and appetizers served. Then we sat at or table and no one came to take our order. Kept on having to ask for heaters, drinks, food. Spending $1000 on dinner and drinks I expect way better service. never will go there again!!!!"

  • "I will be going back soon! I went her with my family to celebrate a graduation and a birthday. The staff was great and even the manager came to check on how everything was! We'll be back very soon."

  • "We were very disappointed. Even the furniture was raggedy. My husband ordered a chopped chicken salad. It arrived with no chicken and none of the advertised oranges. But the real topper was that there was smoking allowed right next to our table! There were 5 men smoking as we ate. "

  • "The boys and I took Mom out for a belated Mother's Day and we had never been to the backyard. It definitely exceeded our expectations. The outside venue is set up really well and our hostess and the manager were fantastic. The variety as well as the quality of the food was excellent as were the prices. We are definitely going back."

  • "This was our second celebration meal at The Backyard and it was a great time again, as it is an oasis in the city and worth the visit."

  • "My friends and I were very sympathetic to the fact that only one waitress was staffed, but it was a Saturday night and it was busy. This meant our drinks did not come with our meal, and by the time our waitress checked on us, we were finished with our meal and she informed us that the beer we had ordered was out. She did not offer us another selection. It then took another 30 minutes for her to bring us our check. The food was great, but the service was some of the worst I have experienced."

  • "Love this place for happy hour - the pool and patio area is perfect for the summer!"

  • "Atmosphere was quiet and relaxing for outdoor lunch. Food was good and server was pleasant. The timing of the food was really off though with all appetizers and entrees being brought out at the same time."

  • "Having lived in Westwood for 35 years it is always a pleasant surprise to find that there is another indication of why this neighborhood is special. The W Hotel has been in the area for years, but we had never eaten in their restaurant until this past week, when a family celebration took us to the Backyard for lunch. It was beautiful, the food excellent and the service first rate. We will be back as the summer warms!"

  • "The ambience and service were phenomenal. It was a lovely afternoon."

  • "Great outdoor dining when it's warm. During the winter months, there's a see-through tent with heaters, which helps with the cold air."

  • "We went for lunch and only the Backyard is open for Lunch, FYI. But really, they should have dining options inside the hotel restaurant downstairs as well. Like us, many tables were business diners, and people just don't want to sit under a tent for lunch with very little shade (the tent is clear). The food was ok (I got the salmon burger and would not get it again--too flat and very bland). The staff seemed overwhelmed. There were not enough tables and there seem to be too few servers. Our server was nice, but none of the staff was dressed very professionally. To me, if you pay that much for a hotel, you would think they would "up it" with the restaurant."

  • "When the weather is nice, there's no better place to have breakfast, lunch or brunch in Westwood. Informal, yet elegant; the food is tasty and not too expensive. Do try their specialty cocktails."

  • "This was our third time at The Backyard and it's always good. We love the atmosphere and food. Our most recent visit on Saturday evening was the best service yet!"

  • "I felt like I was on vacation. Waterfall, palm trees, lovely outdoor breeze. A great place for fabulous drinks, delicious food and friendly relaxed service. I will be back again this weekend!"

  • "Everything was great, I wish they had more vegetarian choices in food."

  • "I do not recommend this restaurant because in the face of a bill of $ 112.27, I have been charged to the credit card € 100.88, much more than the official rate. When I asked for explanations put forward excuses not acceptable. I reserve the right to block payment of the amount charged in most."

  • "I'm reluctant to encourage people to eat here, because it is such a gem, with limited seating. The seatting is idyllic; it's hard to believe you're in bustling LA when you're up there. Just magical!"

  • "Well... you would expect more from a W Restaurant!"
    Dined on 7/20/2013
  • "Obviously with Hotel Dining you can expect an upgrade in pricing due to the nature of the business. Expect to pay $50 for a meal and 1 drink at the W. It's worth it to experience a bit of an oasis during the workday, however you pay a hefty price for what you get."

  • "casual, not certainly a place to "dine"; but the food is good, the surroundings pool-like (look, you're eating at a hotel pool, not a restaurant), the service fine - though it is pricey for all that... A nice place for a summer lunch ..."

  • "I stayed at the hotel for the weekend. The restaurant stated that this was a sunday brunch. The menu was exactly the same as every other day of the week except adding Mimosa's to the list. Was a dissapointing fathers day..."

  • "Tired menu that needs to be updated. Waitress used the kindergarten "we" which drives me nuts. Fir example, "What are we having today?". To which I replied, are you dining with us?"
    Dined on 5/31/2013
  • "This is definitely one of the more grown-up and chic scenes in Westwood. The dishes I had were a bit salty, but nothing a beer or happy hour cocktail couldn't straighten out."
    Dined on 5/29/2013
  • "The quality of the food doesn't justify the price. I expected something more elaborate / meticulous."

  • "Go see Natalie and hope she waits on you! This place is a hidden gem among LA's restaurant scene. the food was amazing and the service was impeccable. We are foodies and the egg in a whole (over greens) was AMAZING!!!! We will be back as Natalie's Bloody Marys make you want to come back for more! Well done W!"
