Another motivating factor was when we saw the size of the portions delivered to the table next to us. After we left we actually ran into the couple at the adjoining table at another restaurant and asked if they were there to finish eating. They said the food had not been very good and the portions appeared to be more like the size from the tasting menu versus a dinner menu......"

  • "On the recommendation of a chef/sommelier friend, we decided to come to the Ashby Inn for dinner as part of a birthday celebration and every member of our group of 4 felt that we were indeed celebrating with every bite! Two of us are very good cooks and we were inspired and mesmerized from just the descriptions provided by our knowledgeable and experienced waiter, let alone the food itself. Worth the hour plus drive from DC. Next time we'll stay at the inn, just so we can spend more time savoring the memory of the meal without that pesky drive back. Go! Eat! Enjoy!"

When I asked for mine to be heated up it was quickly taken away and came back piping hot. Dessert was extremely small, tasty but at $13.00 bucks I wouldn't recommend them. Overall a wonderful birthday celebration for my wife."

  • "Every one of our group of 6 had a fantastic meal. I am the only vegetarian of the group; the Ashby Inn had prepared a special menu for me with only vegetarian options - quite a change from most local restaurants where I'm lucky to find one vegetarian option. The beet salad and the quinoa entree were fantastic. My wife and friends had entrees ranging from lamb to quail to pork and all raved about each one. In addition to the excellence of the food itself, the presentation was unique and delightful, both in how the food was placed on the plates and in the plates themselves, which were different for each dish and each one beautiful. The same carried through for the desserts. The service was above and beyond as well. A great experience!!"

  • "I have to say my latest visit was an enormous disappointment. While I didn't expect the food to be the same as Tarver King's, I did expect it to be cooked properly. I received a piece of duck cold to the touch and cooked so poorly it should never have left the pass. Even colder than the duck was the service which was not welcoming. Cheese was brought with no explanation, just a quickly blurted out name and a wave of the hand and our server walked away from me while I was talking to him three times. Wine pours were extremely short,. Dining is about more than just food and if you're going to be sniffy with guests, make sure that your food is up to scratch. Actually, scratch that, there is never any excuse to be sniffy with your guests."

  • "/we had been here a couple of times in the past so when my husband said he was taking me for a Valentine lunch, I thought - oh, I'd like to go someplace new. So glad we didn't change plans, it was lovely! We enjoyed blue cheese beignets, rabbit rillette, salad, roasted jerusalem artichokes, salmon and croque monsieur, and a chocolate peanut butter dessert. Wine choices by the glass were very interesting, food was delicious and well presented, and service was very nice. There were only 3 couples in the restaurant as it was the day after the big storm so we felt very special. Portions were very generous, we went home stuffed and very happy."

  • "Our first trip to the Ashby Inn. Without a doubt, this was one of our better dining experiences. The menu is apparently adjusted often to take advantage of regional offerings. Each course was superbly presented. The leg of lamb was wonderfully delicate in flavor and consistency. The beef was rich and tender. The soup was exquisite. But what really made the meal stand out were the wine pairings. I was reminded of those commercials where the fuzzy scene becomes clear. When the wine was sipped with the course, voile, the flavors became more significant. Seldom have I been to a place where the pairings were so adroitly done. This is well worth the drive from DC."

  • "My wife and I had Saturday night reservations and the restaurant was pretty busy. We started off with chick pea french fries as a snack that were different but very good. Then our appetizers were bean soup for her and a garden salad for me. Both were small in amount and both tasted good, but her soup was cold, which is odd for bean and bacon soup. Our main courses were lamb and pork shoulder. Again both were very small portions but did taste good. Her lamb was particularly good, just not enough of it. We ended with a chocolate peanut butter mousse dessert that was a bit of a downer. It was a small bar of this chocolate-peanut butter froth with a chocolate covering. A simple mousse would have been better."

We wanted some additional wine, Sommelier suggested additional wine that paired well with everything. Food was fantastic and the service was spot-on. Great ambiance for romantic dinner."

  • "Even though the dead of winter, the drive through the Virginia countryside to The Ashby was beautiful. The Ashby itself, a very old yet beautiful and in excellent condition building, is nestled in a quite small village nestled in the rolling hillside. Inside, the warmth of the Inn is welcoming and full of charm. Our menu choices were beautifully plated - begging, but not taking, photos - perfectly prepared, and absolutely delicious. We will be treating ourselves again."

  • "There is not a lot to say, other than this restaurant is spectacular. They have thought of every, last little detail. The food over delivered, and everything was executed to perfection. Even the snack items (beignets & gougers) were outstanding. The wine pairings were spot on as well. I hope this place doesn't become too popular so that I can go back with every season. I would highly recommend going out of your way to eat at this little gem."

  • "The food was outstanding; however, I had to ask three times for lemon for my water. He seemed preoccupied with other duties. Once we got our food, our conversation was interrupted numerous times by the staff asking if everything was okay. Those interruptions made it difficult to stick to our conversation. Staff should not interrupt conversations; we will ask if we need something. The food was wonderful, but the previous concern made it difficult for us to catch up on things."

  • "Wonderful building in a historic location. Service was good and everyone could not have been nicer. The Ashby Inn tries to serve local produce which is terrific. Problem is: the menu choices are very limited. There were no salads although a very nice was fixed if you asked for one. There were four entrees. I could find only two vegetables on the menu, small white potatoes and a green I don't recall the name of, which means you don't often come across them. The hot French bread was to die for, if you like white flour."

  • "Room was chilly which caused the food to cool quickly. Portions were miniscule. Squash soup, all three ounces of it with one crouton was less than luke warm when it arrived. The six pieces of lamb were served on one parsnip half the size of a baby carrot with one leaf of brussel sprout shredded. A tablespoon of bourbon ice cream topped off an entirely insufficient meal. Go to Five Guys before you eat here."

  • "My husband and I are die-hard Ashby Inn fans and have nothing but great things to say, but their New Year's Eve menu was a bit underwhelming. We checked out the menu online prior to going so we knew what to expect, but the food itself wasn't as up-to-par as usual even though the menu itself was amazing. It's definitely worth noting, however, that the dessert was insanely good. We'll definitely head back again but will likely avoid pre-set holiday menus in the future."

  • "I would recommend the Ashby for a couple or adults. It is a bit pricey for a family as entrees ranged from $15 - $21. Wine was average $10 a glass. The food was wonderful and gourmet style therefore not large portions. All four snacks together were priced under $20 and could be enjoyed by two or three people. For a family of five enjoying the snacks, five entrees and three deserts we were able to keep the bill right at $200.00. The bread was also really good. Service was great. You must visit the local area, drive up Mount Weather and drive over to Boyce for antiquing."

  • "I return to Ashby Inn again and again and I have never been disappointed. The food is superb and is always ranks as one of the most creative and memorable meals I have ever had. The menu is reimagined every week to delight diners anew. The portions are small but never lacking. This past week I had a bowl of chestnut soup that was absolutely Devine. Earthy and sweet with a touch of citrus overtones that was perfectly balanced and left me scraping every last drop from the bowl. The Rib Eye cap was butter tender and perfectly cooked served with Chanterelles and nasturtium leaves. They don't neglect their cocktail menu either. I had something called an Ashby Mule ( Maker's Mark bourbon & apple brandy). Go to Ashby Inn. Go now."

  • "The food is simply amazing! It wasn't just one or two dishes that stood out, but every bite of every course is delicious. My teenage daughter is not very adventurous with food, but she was thrilled each bite she tried - and after the first couple of bites, she tried it all. I We all joked about the possibility of licking the plate to get every last bit of the sauce left from the entree. It was a lovely, amazing dining experience we were able to share with our daughters (though I do feel sorry for future boyfriends trying o impress them - they now know what truely good food tastes like!)"

  • "The restaurant has a new chef and new sous chef and is better than ever. It is our (husband/me) favorite restaurant in the DC area - - and probably the east coast. The chef prepared a special menu just for me - - - really healthy gourmet food, veggies, beautifully plated, delicious. My husband eats everything - and indeed everything was PERFECT. The wine was amazing, the service just right. The atmosphere is energetic, but the noise level is moderate. The setting is cozy and romantic and joyful. We always stay for the night (two nights this time) and love the beautiful rooms in the inn as well as the food."

  • "The food was most excellent--we had 3 first courses, 2 different entrees and 3 desserts--each course outshone the former. The suggested wine pairings that we tried were quite palatable and added to the food experience. Our only complaint was that we felt slightly rushed by the staff to order--moving the meal along a bit quicker than we might have liked. Overall, a great time and meal."
