Diner Reviews
  • "Breakfast=delicious. Eggs, bacon, grits, biscuits, fresh fruit, coffee=very good. The disappointing:slow service.I asked for a spoon to stir my first cup of coffee, it took 13 minutes. The staff is friendly, but poorly trained. Other bad:(1)prolific house flies in the dining room;(2)broccoli was cooked in a microwave and set on fire (it was served charred with an electrical metal taste (inedible);(3) no staff coordination led to lengthy delay before someone came to take a drink order or any order (we had to flag someone down); (4) staff was friendly, but just poorly trained on how to keep diners from waiting at key points during the meal. Will not go back until management steps up the training and food reviews improve."

  • "I had lunch there last week and it was terrific, lots of variety, delicious, etc. so I decided to try it for dinner. The result was completely the opposite the menu was limited, the service a bit slow (in spite of the fact that it was fairly empty), and the food average. I'm headed back again for lunch, but I'm not sure I'll do dinner again."

  • "Farm to table fresh!Somewhat curious, but rather innovative twists on Southern food incorporated in all dishes."

  • "Inventive, season Southern cuisine. The deviled eggs were delicious. But 3 of 4 entrees were presented lukewarm to cold. Poor line management and no offer to re-fire our entrees. Instead the manager gave the obligatory, "I'll pass your comments on to the chef." How about making it right and bringing us a hot meal!"

  • "Very pleasant find in Charlotte. Great food and very nice prices. The drop biscuits were wonderful, along with the deviled eggs. I had the burger, which was phenomenal and my boyfriend had the breakfast sandwich on brioche, super tasty. And coffee was on point too! We were super impressed!"

  • "The food was very fresh - we had a blackened mahi special that was offered. It was healthy and delicous! We sat outside during lunch and it was very nice. Great place, great service, great food! And, it was quick. Did not have to wait long for our lunches."

  • "Incredible early summer menu with divine flavor profiles of electic farm fresh food! Arrugula, blueberries, burrata, peaches, yellowfin tuna, and more surprises!"

  • "Found this place originally due to lack of Sunday evening options, very pleased! Food was was very good, very positive on the Crab Risotto, Deviled Eggs were great (but you must like strong mustard flavor and creamy consistency), daily Ceviche was quite good as well. Biscuits, however, were dry and not too impressive. Very good cocktail list. Went back for lunch the next day, Deviled Eggs a bit soggy this time, but grilled cheese was great. Chess pie also very good. Would definitely recommend."

  • "Interesting menu, unusual combinations of foods and flavors"

  • "The maw maw biscuits with Benton's bacon jam are worth the trip. I had the lunch tacos - very tasty with fresh fried flour tortillas - the shrimp taco could have used a little more sauce to make it more cohesive, but it was all fresh and delicious. The staff is very attentive and knowledgable and the hostess asked us for genuine feedback about the meal, making me feel that the restaurant really is trying to change and improve to fit their audience. This is also evidenced by the changing menu since its opening. I highly recommend it as a great lunch alternative to the other less-than-gourmet options downtown. "

  • "The noise was deafening, the service was slow, and the fish was undercooked. We could not wait to get out of the restaurant."

  • "This was our 2nd visit to Asbury.we thoroughly enjoyed our first visit. This time The hostess was a little "stand offish", the waitress seemed a little "out of sync" missing part of our order it was incredibly loud with a party of 6-7 people that were oblivious to the fact that others were in the room and the cackling of their conversation was overwhelming to other patrons to the point you could not have a conversation with your date. We love this quaint restaurant, however if there is a large crowd of inconsiderate people yelling loudly at each other and considering that as their conversation you might want to choose plan "b" or get one if you didn't have one. The owner who is adorable and Donnie the wine steward were very gracious :-)"

  • "We when her before a Broadway lights shows because of it location and we will go back. The food was very good, Cindy had the "Grouper and peanut Wild Rice and Toasted Pecan Pilaf" and I had the "Chicken + Dumplings". They were both really good. The noise level did get loud when the restaurant got full with everybody talking, so it was a little hard to hear but beside that it was perfect. We will be going back again."

  • "The wife and I went here on a Wednesday nights before a show. Out server Donald was prompt, charismatic, and very knowledgeable about the cuisine. The food had a few seasoning issues, minor issues, and only on 2 of the 6 items we ordered. The crew appreciated the feedback and went out of their way to make us happy. Which they did. Overall, it was how dining out should be."

  • "The menu is imaginative and the entrees are well-prepared and well-presented. The Asbury specializes in farm-to-table ingredients, which we applaud. The dining area provides an intimate setting, and a moderate noise level, even when full, invites conversation."

  • "Very creative menu, well executed by caring staff. Local sourcing, seasonal flavors, these folks take great pride in their food. Order lots and share - too many great choices!"

  • "There were six of us and all agreed that preparation and service were excellent. The chicken and dumplings were not at all what I expected--so, so much better! My husband and I went back for breakfast the next morning and it was also superb. Although the prices put it in the "special occasion dining category" for me, The Asbury is quite reasonable for the quality. I will plan to go back the next time I'm in Charlotte and I would definitely recommend if for groups. We happened to be seated at dinner next to a table that was really enjoying each other's company, which accounts for the "energetic" noise level rating. Compliments to the chef!"

  • "I went here for Mother's Day brunch and the menu and food was great. I enjoyed everything I ate. The only problem was the service. The food took a long time to come out. Also other people who got there later got their food before my table. But overall the food was very good there was just a wait. "

  • "I ordered the deviled eggs appetizer and the roasted beet and arugala salad with strawberries. Best deviled eggs I ever had and the salad was also very high on my favorites list. I can't remember what my friend ordered but she also enjoyed her lunch and she took a piece of their apple cake home to enjoy later that evening. It was a huge portion and it looked delicious. Can't wait to go back and try their new summer lunch menu options, as well as their brunch and dinner menu options."

  • "From start to finish, our meal at The Asbury was wonderful! The chef made a special meal for us, since we are vegetarians, the staff could not have been more attentive and professional, the food was excellent!! We felt like honored guests, not just some paying customers...... we will most assuredly be back! "

  • "Over the years we've eaten in the dining room of the Dunhill Hotel many times. The food wasn't bad, it wasn't exceptional. New menus and new chefs would bring us back because of their convenient location near Belk Theater. The newest iteration is worth your visit. We've had two dinners there of late, smoked trout with egg, and chicken and dumplings the first time. Soft shell crabs (rather savory) and scallops last week. Both meals were excellent. The bad news, only one other couple was there. This kitchen deserves your support. "

  • "Way over-priced for the quality of food - scallops were under-cooked; a piece of bacon garnish was so overcooked, it had taste and texture of cardboard. Had mentioned spouse's 77th birthday, and server forgot. Scallop dish had a non-descript BBQ sauce, and a mushy, flavorless scoop of something... Nice location; staff is very nice; kitchen needs to execute better to charge $30+ for entrees."

  • "My husband and I celebrated his birthday by going there for breakfast. It is sentimental to us because we stayed at the Dunhill 10 years ago for our 1-year dating anniversary and ate breakfast there. The food was delicious and generously portioned. We will keep this in mind for future breakfast outings."

  • "Visited for Easter Brunch and loved the traditional brunch items; desserts were phenomenal. As usual, service was spot-on - friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. Really wanted to love everything about this visit but just can't say we did. Having been here during all previous incarnations - and it being a long-time favorite, we were expecting great things with new Exec Chef Chris Coleman, recently moved from another local fave, McNinch House. Signature dish chicken and dumplings was disappointing; the server DID note that it "isn't your grandma's chick'n'dumplings." Served "au jus," the dumplings, gnocchi, were soggy from the soupy presentation; chicken leg was teeny. Will surely come back again, but likely won't order that again. "

  • "We arrived early for our reservation, but they were able to seat us early. The food was delicious. We shared the flounder and burger (with bacon jam). My only complaint was that they were out of the chicken and dumplings. Would recommend!"

  • "Service was less than to be expected. We were tracking brunch started at ten, which is what was advertised, but the server disagreed and would not provide brunch menu, only breakfast. Food was okay but nothing spectacular."

  • "Had pre-show dinner at The Asbury and was generally pleased. We started with drinks, I highly recommend the Espresso Martini. Followed that with the Sampler starter: BBQ Caramel Popcorn, Deviled Eggs, Butter Bean Hummus, and Icebox pickles: delicious and a beautiful presentation. I then had the Roasted Beet Salad. It was good, just not great. I would prefer a creamier goat cheese on that salad as the whipped Chèvre was almost a dessert consistency. Then I had what was probably the best beef ribs I've ever eaten. Delicious! I highly recommend them. Would I dine at The Asbury again? Ehhh.,,not sure because of the sheer number if delicious restaurants in Charlotte. But, I'm glad we had the experience."

  • "I was impressed with the intimacy of a small restaurant. I had the Short Ribs that were melt in your mouth tender, with beets and sweet potato. Delicious! I hope to try Brunch there next."

  • "The Asbury has an incredible menu! The snack plates are an interesting assortment of foods at low prices. You can just get several of those and some drinks to split between friends before going out for the evening and be satisfied. But don't let that stop you from getting one of the delicious and unique entrees! Nothing ordinary about these dishes, from the types of food to the beautiful presentation on the plate. Finally, the chocolate chess pie is to die for! The wait staff is well-trained, from their friendliness to their knowledge of the menu to their vigilance. All in all, a great dining experience you don't want to miss!"

  • "This was our second visit in less than two months. We were very pleased with our experience (this time, too) - overall FOUR STARS. The most obvious compliment is there are enough service people to assure each diner is well treated. The four of us tried the Butterbean Hummus (snack) and it was good. More different than good but we all ate some of it. We each had a different entrée. Tried the scallops, shrimp, catfish and short ribs among the four of us. All tasty and well presented. The four of us shared a dessert and a bottle of wine. It is a good place - certainly worth trying. You may not be overwhelmed but we bet you will be satisfied. Again, we appreciate the conscientious service!"

  • "Very creative menu. I had the 62 degree egg and cured fish, it was really great. Others had different dishes and all were happy. We also had dessert and it was great as well. High quality cocktails also. Well run high quality establishment. I look forward to returning soon to try another dish."
