A word from The Artist's Palate
Installed in a building once occupied by a Golden Era clothing store, M. Schwartz, The Artist’s Palate restaurant has brought back life to Main Street in Poughkeepsie. Designers have reworked the interior space of the 70-seat dining room to combine cosmopolitan elegance with an edgy industrial accent. Like the décor, the menu showcases innovation: An extensive array of wines, handcrafted beers and unique cocktails complement our revolving seasonal menu. The lunch menu is available for delivery within the city from 11am-2:30pm.

As its name suggests, The Artist’s Palate treats food as art, introducing new flavor combinations to local and regional diners. What is more, the restaurant gallery is committed to showcasing the best of up-and-coming local artists in a revolving exhibition. When it opened in 2006, the restaurant was quickly lauded by local and regional restaurant critics and discerning diners. The Artist’s Palate has fast become a Dutchess County institution.

  • "We love the nice modern decor; we so want to like this place but won't go back. It's too pricey for what it is. Our server was obnoxious, so in our face and overbearing. We were glad the chef came by to schmooze, but we almost thought he would pull up a chair. The lamb wasn't tender enough and plenta so-so; the chicken dumplings had almost no taste and overbearing sauce; the trout was good; the bread VERY good, we had one dessert and shared and wasn't great except for the sorbet. We think the food needs to be improved vastly for the prices; $70 per couple for what we ate which included only 2 glasses of wine was far too much!"

With high expectations for our second visit, it did not compare. The menu changes and we weren't as pleased with the options. I ordered a New York strip that was tough and fatty. It was accompanied by blah mashed potatoes. Our waiter did a great job and we enjoyed dessert. For the price and location I would look for other options."

Excellent service, wide-ranging beer list, can't offer an opinion of the wine list. The ambiance was very nice and quiet, but we were there on a Tuesday and were one of two tables that evening. I hope that isn't always the case, as this restaurant deserves to do well."

  • "Hate to sound like a broken record, but the good was simply amazing. I had the catfish dish which was perfect for a cold rainy night, and my wife had the Murray Chicken, which was to die for!!!! Highly recommend it all. Our server could have been a bit friendlier and more personable, that was why I gave it a 3/5 for service. My wife and I had a great time and are very please we chose to dine at the Artist's Palate!"

  • "We are regulars at the Artist Palate and always love their food. My wife & I had the Schnitzel this evening, a new item on their menu. It was very tasty, except the bread coating turned out to be just a little bit dry for us. We prefer ours with a slightly heavier batter on Schnitzel. Still a delicious dish with the mushroom gravy and roasted potatoes. Our son & his girlfriend had the fried catfish & grilled salmon respectively. Both enjoyed their meals very much. The waiter was always checking in on our needs. Another wonderful dinner at the Artist's Palate. We'll be back in a few weeks."

  • "What a great experience! After reading the reviews I had high expectations for this place and I was not disappointed. We were quickly seated upon arriving and the service was great. Sit with Lindsay if you can. We had the Maine mussels for an appetizer, they we cooked to the perfect temperature and had chorizo and cilantro in the broth to give them a little kick, and great taste. I really wanted to try the venison but they were out so I had the ribeye that was done perfectly. This will definitely be a place that I will return to often, very glad that I found it!"

  • "May be I'm not being very fair. But I'm just not sure about this place. The evening I went with a friend, the restaurant was'nt very busy so maybe it lacked atmosphere, one of the waiters seemed a little miserable & didnt realy want to engage in idle chit chat. However the food was good, the cocktails were very good, our waitress was very pleasant & the service was good. The seating area is large & it would easily accommodate large parties, the lighting was a little bright so at least you could see the menu! I would recommend it to friends & I would deffinately go back & give it a second chance."

The decor is nice, ambiance is nice, and it seems like the chef or proprietor's daughter was happily hanging around, not noisy, very pleasant (as I have young children and hope to bring them here as well)... Our waiter did not bring my bottle of wine until I asked him (not good at all) and he never once come back to pour"

  • "We visited Artist's Palate based on Yelp reviews for restaurant week(s) in the spring. The staff was very attentive from the moment we walked in the door. They called up dietary restrictions we noted in an online reservation, recommended dishes based on those needs, and delivered superior service. I was impressed that the owner/chef Charlie, another chef, and several servers knew all about our order and our special dietary needs. We had the fixed menu for restaurant week and it was a tasty bargain. I had a salad with roasted asparagus and greens, roasted duck with black rice and vegetables, and panna cotta. We also tried a farro risotto & a pear spice cake. The meal began with roasted tomato pesto & toasted bread. We'll definitely return!"

  • "My wife and I ate here during our first visit to Poughkeepsie from NYC. Not too trendy--just enough flair to make new American dishes more intriguing. Overall, the food was good, with decent portions and reasonable prices. We had Lobster Mac N Cheese, Bone Marrow, Norwegian Cod and the Boat & Barnyard (scallops and pork belly). We skipped on desert. Only the noodles in the Cod dish were just ok. The also had a unique 'half-martini' cocktail option, where you could order a mini/half-sized version of a regular martini. Kind of useful for tastings or driving home. The service was very friendly and professional."

  • "I took a date here on a Friday night. The host greeted us at the door and checked our coats. Our table was ready even though we were almost 20 minutes early. When we sat our table wobbled a bit, the host noticed and immediately brought a wedge to level it, I thought that was good service. The waitress was friendly and prompt with everything we needed. The food was delicious and came in a timely manner. The only area for improvement, in my opinion, would be ambience. Some mood lighting and soft background music would be my suggestions. Otherwise we had a wonderful experience."

  • "I brought my mother here for the first time on Christmas Eve. From the get go our server was fantastic, and was very helpful explaining the specials. After practically devouring the tomato basil spread with bread, my mom chose the scallops with lobster risotto for dinner. She was thrilled with her meal and said the scallops were perfectly cooked and the risotto divine. I ordered the striped bass with cabbage and a lemon cream sauce, and it was spot on. Fish cooked perfectly, and the seasoning was exactly to my taste. Portion size was perfect. We both had a cup of excellent coffee to wrap up our meals, though we swore to try dessert next time. Highly recommended!"

We had a 7pm reservation, which was good for us because by 8pm the restaurant had filled with a somewhat noisy group of people.
