A word from The Artist's Palate
Installed in a building once occupied by a Golden Era clothing store, M. Schwartz, The Artist’s Palate restaurant has brought back life to Main Street in Poughkeepsie. Designers have reworked the interior space of the 70-seat dining room to combine cosmopolitan elegance with an edgy industrial accent. Like the décor, the menu showcases innovation: An extensive array of wines, handcrafted beers and unique cocktails complement our revolving seasonal menu. The lunch menu is available for delivery within the city from 11am-2:30pm.

As its name suggests, The Artist’s Palate treats food as art, introducing new flavor combinations to local and regional diners. What is more, the restaurant gallery is committed to showcasing the best of up-and-coming local artists in a revolving exhibition. When it opened in 2006, the restaurant was quickly lauded by local and regional restaurant critics and discerning diners. The Artist’s Palate has fast become a Dutchess County institution.

Diner Reviews
  • "For our 2nd visit here we hosted ten friends who travel widely & enjoy fine food. Several declared this to be the best meal they'd ever had. We were expertly served by Daryl, who was knowledgable, attentive, patient, & gracious throughout the evening. The stage was beautifully set with an amuse bouche that delighted taste buds. Appetizers received rave reviews as friends savored carefully layered flavors & textures, from the crispy fried tofu to the grilled figs. For entrees we had the rack of lamb, the wild sockeye salmon, and the day boat scallops, all tantalizingly presented w/ delicious accompaniments that never intruded. We shared desserts, one offered with chef's compliments. The chefs here are, indeed, artists. We'll be back!"

  • "It is on the top of my list before the Brasserie, Crave, & Crew. Why? The ambiance, exquisite food and friendly service meld together by carefully crafted artists for a delightful experience. A staple are their Queen City Manhattans. The amuse they served was particularly tasty - a salmon tartare with a punch of spice. Appetizers were fresh and umami: Maine Lobster Mac and Cheese, and the grilled fresh figs. To keep it summery I went with the sockeye salmon, the fregola sarda with addition of blood oranges and cooked to perfection salmon sent my taste buds exploding with joy! To finish it off the Berry Tart hit the spot. Megan, the executive chef, even greeted our party afterward. Can't wait til next time!"

  • "Server, name not remembered, was friendly and fine but only when we initiated interaction. He was not a proactive consultant which is something we expect at a restaurant this wonderful."

  • "We had a very nice dinner. We were there for 3 hours by our own choosing and did not feel rushed. The service and food were outstanding. We will definitely dine there again."

  • "Our dining experience was only enhance by the friendliness of the staff, including the chef/ owner herself. The food was delicious and beautifully presented. We will certainly go back and count this among our most favorites restaurants! Kudos"

  • "Open Kitchen and good basic food. Staff friendly. Very few people for a Tuesday."

  • "We liked the restaurant but my food was brought out cold. The sauce and rice were cold and I asked to have it heated... this was a 27 meal. My wife's pasta did not look like anything special. Oddly a diner next to us also had cold food. For the price this restaurant is not worth it, there are better options."

  • "We dined here for the first time on a Monday night and were delighted to find it busy. We were welcomed warmly & seated swiftly. We took in the exposed brick, the original tin ceiling, the warm lighting, the effectively used mirror along one wall, the open kitchen at the rear. The simplicity and elegance of the decor matched the superbly simple yet sophisticated food preparation & presentation. Crab & corn fritters followed by lean buffalo ribeye, fried green tomatoes w/ shrimp & piclled ramps, a light buttermilk dressing on the side, followed by seared scallops w/ lentils & swiss chard w/ a perfectly light but savory whole grain mustatd sauce--a delicious meal. Chef-owner Megan Fells came out from the kitchen herself to serve our entres."

  • "We had a wonderful dinner at Artist's Palate this weekend, generous drinks, delicious food, well chosen wines, great service. The dining room was spacious and airy, the table and seating comfortable. Our server was knowledgeable and enthusiastic as she guided us through the menu. I would not miss the soft shell crabs, done perfectly and presented artfully with ample, fresh sides. My buffalo ribeye was done just as i requested, seared outside and rare inside, great fried onion rings and potatoes made a great plate. We hope to return soon."

  • "Let me some it up this way...I think...the idea behind the dishes was fine...the outcomes were not all that spectacular. The drinks were imaginative and well done. I like especially the traditional gin martini but it had blue cheese stuffed olives wrapped in sizzling bacon.Salad was an ample portion, enough for two,but he salad was totally overpowered by vinegar....and I tend to make my salads shorter on oil and more on vinegar..but this was excessive. The 14 ounce shell steak looked nice prepared but when my partner cut into it, it was medium rare rather than medium well...and it was cold...it when back to the kitchen. My pork chop also looked nicely done, but cool and it was quite undercooked for a piece of pork."

  • "The decor is great. The food was outstanding from amuse bouche to dessert. Menu has so many options it was hard to choose because they all looked good and the menu changes every 2 weeks - creative, fresh and local. We had watermelon gazpacho (not overly sweet, crunchy veggies kept it fresh), shared the octopus with perfectly crispy potatoes and the fried green tomatoes with shrimp and buttermilk dressing. We then shared the buffalo rib eye with its own steak sauce and the cashew crusted fish with mango and cucumber salsa. The warm pineapple upside down cake was the perfect finish to a pretty perfect meal. Also lovely that one of the chef owners comes in and chats with each table. We can't wait to go back."

  • "We enjoyed our meal at the Artist's Palate. The food was consistently good. However, the service was painfully slow. We had 3 young children with us and that was difficult. The ambience was lovely, neighborhood a bit shady, but we were overall satisfied with our experience."

  • "Took my mom here for Mother's Day. Food was good, but wasn't overly impressed. Had a server with a tattoo on his hand - he was condescending and was rude when we asked him questions. Server at the bar was very nice though and made a great cocktail. "

  • "Very happy to have found this spot. Service was very good. Portion sizes were very good. Members of our party enjoyed the steak, lamb, pork and pasta dish. All were cooked and presented well! Beer selection and wine selection was good, plenty of choices and price points."

  • "What can we say, but total PERFECTION!! From entering the restaurant, we are immediately greeted and escorted to our table. The ambiance of the restuarant itself always has a different vibe, as the artwork from local artists change the scenery. You can enjoy one of their signature cocktails or a bottle of wine from one of the hudson valleys local wineries. Megan and Charlies artistic talents of combining different spices for the most impeccable dining experience imaginable. They are truly award winning culinary talents!!!! I look forward to returning just to begin all over again!!! "

  • "Love what the owners are doing with the food. Had a college event in there space next door and was very interested in trying this restaurant. We went before an event at the civic center thought we had plenty of time, 2 hours. The service was so slow we ended up taking my daughters ice cream to go. The service said "hope you make the event on time." Need to ramp up service. Only had 2 servers maybe need more."

  • "The Artist's Palate is a dining experience. From the outstanding service to the gourmet cuisine; this place is amazing. It is a very vibrant and metropolitan atmosphere. Be prepared to spend a little extra, but so worth it. I cannot wait to go back."

  • "Getting a table on Mondays proved a challenge - glad that I found the Artist's Palate. Fantastic food - we have been looking for 20 years to find an octopus prepared like this again! The Chef's sampler was another highlight for salami and cheese lovers. We normally don't eat pork but ventured for the The Little Pigs - great choice, just delicious. Big wine list - everyone will find something. Service was excellent. We had the table right at the entry - sounds like a bad spot, but it was the best table - a little recessed with nice comfy chairs away from the traffic. We will go there again and again! "

  • "There isn't all that much in the downtown area of Poughkeepsie, but The Artisit's Palate is likely the best place there. The menu is interesting, the food is creative, nicely presented and tasty, the wine list is just fine, and the service is professional and friendly. This is definitely the place to go if you have to dine in the city of Poughkeepsie."

  • "The tomato pesto with bread was amazing! The artists plate had a great selection of cheeses and meats but I felt it was lacking a cracker or crostini to eat them with. The waitstaff was very friendly and helpful but seemed a little understaffed which is why I gave them 4 instead of 5 stars (they had slight issues refilling the water but otherwise outstanding). The ravioli were a bit thick skinned in my opinion and kind of bland, the broth was good though. The lobster mac and cheese was good but not the best I've had."

  • "Very New York City feel with great menu and bar selections. Ambience is top notch as is the food. Lots of young couples, definitely not for kids. Special night out for Mom and Dad or a ladies night out."

  • "We love the nice modern decor; we so want to like this place but won't go back. It's too pricey for what it is. Our server was obnoxious, so in our face and overbearing. We were glad the chef came by to schmooze, but we almost thought he would pull up a chair. The lamb wasn't tender enough and plenta so-so; the chicken dumplings had almost no taste and overbearing sauce; the trout was good; the bread VERY good, we had one dessert and shared and wasn't great except for the sorbet. We think the food needs to be improved vastly for the prices; $70 per couple for what we ate which included only 2 glasses of wine was far too much!"

  • "This was our second visit to the Artist's Palate. Our first visit was amazing. Couldn't say enough about the service, quality and presentation. With high expectations for our second visit, it did not compare. The menu changes and we weren't as pleased with the options. I ordered a New York strip that was tough and fatty. It was accompanied by blah mashed potatoes. Our waiter did a great job and we enjoyed dessert. For the price and location I would look for other options."

  • "Had an excellent dinner at the Artists Palate. All the course were solid, but the pineapple upside-down cake was the star. Excellent service, wide-ranging beer list, can't offer an opinion of the wine list. The ambiance was very nice and quiet, but we were there on a Tuesday and were one of two tables that evening. I hope that isn't always the case, as this restaurant deserves to do well."

  • "Hate to sound like a broken record, but the good was simply amazing. I had the catfish dish which was perfect for a cold rainy night, and my wife had the Murray Chicken, which was to die for!!!! Highly recommend it all. Our server could have been a bit friendlier and more personable, that was why I gave it a 3/5 for service. My wife and I had a great time and are very please we chose to dine at the Artist's Palate!"

  • "What a great experience! After reading the reviews I had high expectations for this place and I was not disappointed. We were quickly seated upon arriving and the service was great. Sit with Lindsay if you can. We had the Maine mussels for an appetizer, they we cooked to the perfect temperature and had chorizo and cilantro in the broth to give them a little kick, and great taste. I really wanted to try the venison but they were out so I had the ribeye that was done perfectly. This will definitely be a place that I will return to often, very glad that I found it!"

  • "We are regulars at the Artist Palate and always love their food. My wife & I had the Schnitzel this evening, a new item on their menu. It was very tasty, except the bread coating turned out to be just a little bit dry for us. We prefer ours with a slightly heavier batter on Schnitzel. Still a delicious dish with the mushroom gravy and roasted potatoes. Our son & his girlfriend had the fried catfish & grilled salmon respectively. Both enjoyed their meals very much. The waiter was always checking in on our needs. Another wonderful dinner at the Artist's Palate. We'll be back in a few weeks."

  • "I had high hopes for this place as I am always looking for great local venues which I can return to. The decor is nice, ambiance is nice, and it seems like the chef or proprietor's daughter was happily hanging around, not noisy, very pleasant (as I have young children and hope to bring them here as well)... In any case, the menu sounded very appetizing, but the food was disappointing (very bland). Our waiter did not bring my bottle of wine until I asked him (not good at all) and he never once come back to pour"

  • "Went on a Tuesday night during HV Restaurant Week. No specific complaints, but food and service was not as impeccable as in previous visits. We arrived late, after phoning ahead about our delay, but while being seated promptly, we waited for cocktail orders, etc. I understand, perfectly well, that all restaurants have their off moments, so this should not be construed as negative."

  • "I had the duck on the reasturant week menu and it was delicious, I was hesitant at first because I don't love the flavor of the duck but it was so well prepared... Also the attentiveness of the staff was amazing, they know what good costumer service is all about."

  • "We visited Artist's Palate based on Yelp reviews for restaurant week(s) in the spring. The staff was very attentive from the moment we walked in the door. They called up dietary restrictions we noted in an online reservation, recommended dishes based on those needs, and delivered superior service. I was impressed that the owner/chef Charlie, another chef, and several servers knew all about our order and our special dietary needs. We had the fixed menu for restaurant week and it was a tasty bargain. I had a salad with roasted asparagus and greens, roasted duck with black rice and vegetables, and panna cotta. We also tried a farro risotto & a pear spice cake. The meal began with roasted tomato pesto & toasted bread. We'll definitely return!"
