American Sector restaurant serves nostalgic favorites in the World War II Museum. If you were eating in America in the 1940s, then acclaimed chef John Besh’s restaurant, American Sector located in the National World War II Museum of New Orleans, will surely pique the nostalgia. Just reading the menu will send you down memory lane, and when you finally decide and the food arrives, you may well find its better than you remember.
That’s because Besh is a gifted chef with a playful touch, dedicated to preserving the food ways and traditions that are our culinary heritage. His nostalgic menu of all-American favorites, lovingly refined and honoring World War II-era America, is delectably southern bent.

  • "Although I had visited the American Sector briefly for a bite of lunch a few years ago, I did not expect the dinner experience to meet my already high expectations. And yet, they did. My soup and friend's salad were incredible appetizers with unique, WWII-esque presentations. We ordered the entrees recommended by the barista and were even more pleased at how delicious and unique the food was. Although the atmosphere inside was endearing, decorated with images of men and women from the 1940s, we opted to sit outside. The view of the rustic brick walls, delightful greenery, and waving American flag accompanied by the sound of 70 year old brass melodies were enchanting. I'd recommend to anyone looking for a one of a kind dining experience."

  • "The most memorable aspect of our recent lunch at the American Sector was the dispirited atmosphere created by the staff. From the moment he approached our table, our unsmiling waiter projected an air of annoyance--as if he would rather be anywhere but there. He offered no recommendations about the food other than to comment that the meatloaf was "okay." And so it was. Okay, but not at all noteworthy. Ditto the Cobb salad, which consisted of nice quality deli turkey, blue cheese, and bacon, unfortunately served on a bed of room temperature iceberg lettuce. The ambience might have been improved had managers engaged with diners rather than merely standing around looking bored."

  • "Just because the Besh name is on it doesn't mean to jack the prices up. Really, $20 for shrimp creole? You can go to a hole in the wall place and get better fried shrimp and less expensive shrimp creole and it's just as good if not better. We came with a family of 5 and that is crazy to have to spend that much on lunch."

Everything was just great, but our server said John Besh is opting out of his participation. I hope everything stays as close as possible to its present state. It is a great dining experience.   • "The pickles were the only good (not great) food item. The shrimp and spivey sausage Po'Boy was marginal with bland sausage and 4 over cooked shrimp. The lamb burger was over cooked. To add insult to injury the prices were 4 star for 1.5 star quality. Skip this restaurant and walk 2 blocks in any direction where you will easily find better more reasonably priced food."

  • "We had been wanting to here, and decided to make a reservation for lunch while we were visiting the nearby museums. We ordered sandwiches, which came with the homemade chips. The beverage menu was also amazing. We also really enjoyed the décor. The best part of the meal was the dessert. We will definitely plan to eat here again on our next visit to New Orleans. You will need reservations in order to eat here. We saw several people being turned away as a result of not having reservations."

  • "We shouldn't have visited on Memorial Day because it was slammed, but our lunch was so bad and the entrees took so long that the manager comped our entire meal. Service was really bad, my mint julep had tons of brown mint, and the pork po-boy was served on a roll that was more like a crouton and unfit for eating as a sandwich. And we had to wait 40 minutes for the sandwich to arrive. We'll never go back. "

  • "The WWII was nice to visit and I thought that since this was a John Besh restaurant that we would have a unique dining experience, but I was sadly disappointed. The food was nothing special and the service was not good at all. Although our waiter came shortly after we were seated, once he took our order it seemed that he disappeared and we needed an All Point Bulletin to find him again. My wife wanted ketchup for her burger and fries and after flagging down three people from the wait staff, it finally came; but it took so long you would have thought they had to travel to Pittsburgh to get it. Not going back!"

  • "This was my third time here and i Love it each time however for those who have not been here and want fast service i suggest going during the week the Weekends are PACKED and service becomes slower due to the crowds. I have yet to have a bad dish here. I would say though that if you like heavily seasoned foods this is not your restaurant. This is food served at its best lightly seasoned and just great quality."

  • "The restaurant was only half full, but we still experienced slow service, with a total of 3 different waiters at different times. One person in our group had the lunch special which was meat loaf and felt that it was pretty good. My wife and I split a ruben sandwich. It was possibly the worst ruben I have ever been served. The meat was grey and obviously old and the sandwich was not hot. We also had french fries with some sort of chili over them. They were served cold. Our fourth person had a very un-remarkable salad for lunch. I had previously eaten here about 2 years ago and found it to be quite good at that time. It was entirely different this time in all respects. "

  • "Made reservations so we would be assured a table, and were seated promptly upon arriving on time. The menu is varied, from salads to sandwiches to entrees. The burgers are 10 ounces each, which were too big for us, so the server suggested that they split one for us. You don't find that often - the suggestion and willingness to split an entrée. The burger was well worth it, cooked perfectly and very juicy. Comes with house-made fries. Nice beer list and wines by the glass, along with all the typical beverages. Relaxed service. Cupcakes for dessert - what is not to like. We ordered two (hey, we split the burger) - vanilla bean and red velvet. Both were great. An enjoyable lunch."

  • "We were excited to be able to eat at American Sector but was very let down. The food was ok and the service was a little lacking. Once was good enough. We had the duck wings that was good but the lamb ribs were a little to fatty for me. Also the Japaleno grits were very bland and the oyster salad was probably the worst I've ever had!"

  • "Previously here at lunch and loved the food, the atmosphere, the service, etc. This occasion, the dissatisfaction may have all revolved around poor service - a large semi-formal gala event elsewhere on property and an extremely large party in the restaurant. Order was not taken promptly; appetizers were served without plates and had to wait quite some time when this was pointed out; water glasses were not refilled; food was not served in a timely manner; the hot food was nearly room temperature, which may affected its "quality; despite a large amount of food remaining, server did not ask if a to-go box was needed; server did not ask if dessert and/or coffee was desired to conclude. Probably this was an exception, but unlikely to return."

  • "On recent trip to New Orleans, was looking forward to dining at American Sector restaurant. Thought having John Besh as the chef would elevate the food at the WWII museum to New Orleans "level" of dining. Very disappointing. While the menu looked/sounded great, the execution from the kitchen fell way short. There were four of us. Hamburger, OK. Chicken, dry. Althought the couscous was good. Lamb balls with ravioli was below average. Meatballs were way overcooked. No lamb flavor at all. Small and hard. Ravioli was very dense. Sauce was very good though. Finally my wife had braised pork belly in ramen. Terrible. Came out at room tepid. Then, NO flavor to broth. Have had pork belly before, but no meat, just fat. Wife said "worst meal ever"."

  • "Took some friends from out of town to this restaurant for lunch. Have been here before so knew it was good. The service was great as expected. The place was a lot busier and boisterous than I remember and the tables a little too close to each other. This made having a private conversation a little hard. But the food was good and the weather made for great outdoor dining for many people. I remain a fan of this restaurant and will be back"

  • "The ambience is warming. Chef john besh has an outstanding menu. They have a nice beer list with some home micro brews on the list. Its has an out side patio, an indoor table setting plus 2 private dinning rooms which are available for a small nominal fee, ($100 for the waiter). You also have the choice of going in for a dinner and a show. I highly recommend stopping by and taking your taste buds on a ride on the highway they have never been down!!"

  • "We all found the food to be OK but no big deal. Salad was overdressed and too salty. The shortribs were overspiced, mac and cheese, greasy. The pulled pork sandwhich was dry. I asked about the meatloaf. Our waiter acted like I was being picky because I can't eat peppers. "Are you allergic or you just don't like them?" he asked. I was not going to get into my specific dietary problem with raw or under-cooked onions and peppers and then he said in a kind of smart-alek -way. "Oh...you just don't like them." All-in-all......way over-priced. On the other hand, the hostess was lovely and the chocolate malt was very good. We went to John Besh's other place, Domenica and really enjoyed the meal completely."

  • "On my last night in Nola I decided to to give the american sector a try as it was just a couple blocks my hotel. I started with the Italian cheese fries which were actually delicious. However 5 minutes into my app my main course arrives. So as im finishing my app my main course is sitting there getting cold. I ordered the braised beef ribs and let me tell you what a mistake that was. It was the driest piece of beef I have ever tasted. At one point I had to stick my finger in my mouth to dislodge pieces from my cheeks due to it clinging for life on the moisture in my mouth. Although the wait staff did apologize for the courses coming out on top of each other not once did they comes back to check how it was. Horrible experience"

  • "We had reservations for 6:30 but decided to go early for Happy Hour. They accommodated us, we sat and had drinks and then around 6 we ate. The waitress was extremely friendly and the food was great. It was during the week so they were not quite as busy. The bar area was full though. It was a good way to relax and talk after seeing some of the exhibits that were quite emotional."

  • "Our expectations of a John Besh establishment were not met and we cannot recommend this place to anyone. The crab cake sandwich was tasteless if crab and loaded with bread as a filler. One large hockey puck! Reminded me if a frozen TV dinner. Really John? Also ordered the pork, a better selection. Tender and flavorful. We were nickeled and dimed as French fries were an upcharge as well as sauce to put on the crab cake. Service was slow and unattentive. A disappointing start to a wonderful afternoon at the. WWII exhibit."
