The American RestaurantOur first visit back thereOur first visit back there after a few years. We wont wait so long next time. Liked the new menu and food preparation could not have been better. Wine, pricey, but excellent. We had the day boat scallops and the Campo Lindo chicken. Side courses were excellent as well. Service (Robert and helpers) has to be the best in town by far.This place is not cheap by any means but in any other City would cost much more.. Nice view, but the Crown Center location remains a drag on draw for dinner, as the restaurant, on a Friday evening, was nowhere near full. There should be a line out the door. If it were in Leawood, reservations would be needed a month in advance. Prime rib with spring garlic sauce was perfectly prepared, as was the halibut. Amuse bouches were interesting treats.

and service. The bar is also wonderful. Willie the bartender has been there since this place opened and always greets us warmly. This is my favorite restaurant in KC! The rib eye was great. The Nickers Bar dessert was sublime. Our wine was decanted into a decanter that was like a piece of art. The dining room has a wonderful, quiet atmosphere; one can actually carry on a conversation. Place really needs the interior updated. Still looks like the 70s, if the ownership would spend some money on updating the place - man you would have lines out the door. The food and wine are amazing. I will for sure be back for a special occasion. For our anniversary, I decided to take my wife there for dinner this past Friday night. We've traveled alot, and living in places like Phoenix and San Francisco area, we have enjoyed some truly memorable dining experiences... so it was terrific to come home and find a place like The American which provides fine dining. The food this past Friday night was very good, but it wasn't what I would call "great". The American restaurant is a MUST stop in Kansas City. The place has an old time classy feel. The decor is beautiful and the scenic view of the city amazing! The food is a treat for the eyes and palette. If the antelope is on the menu, get it, it was superb! It was tender and complimented by the chorizo. Excellent presentation and flavors. This place does not disappoint. I've frequented top restaurants in Vegas, D.C., And Manhattan. This place competes with the best of them. Two more notes: the service is impeccable and the live entertainment a treat. We visited on a Saturday night and had a great time. Sadly, the return diners that accompanied us sent a couple of courses back and were greeted graciously with other choices and other accommodations that worked very nicely. Service was impeccable. Neither he nor I had been to the American Restaurant. We were very impressed with the amazing view of the Kansas City landscape. We could see Crown Center, Union Station, Hallmark Cards, downtown KC, the new Kauffman Performing Arts Center, Bartle Hall, and much more. The food was outstanding. We had a 3-course meal with antelope as the main dish. The thing I liked about the food was it was not based on quantity but on quality. We both felt full and very satisfied but not stuffed. The service was excellent and the American Restaurant is truly not only a 5 star restaurant but a Kansas City gem as well.
