Diner Reviews
  • "Our dinner was fantastic! The service was outstanding. The staff made us feel welcome. Our server, Nick, was friendly, helpful, attentive. He checked on us frequently to make certain everything was satisfactory. The sommelier helped us select a very nice wine that we were not familiar with. The General Manager stopped by several times to check on us. The food was delicious, creatively prepared and artfully displayed. The portions were sized appropriately, not too big, not too small. All in all it was an outstanding experience. The American Restaurant is pricey and not a place we can visit regularly, but the entire experience was outstanding and definitely worth it."

  • "The American Restaurant is one of the best restaurants I have eaten in. I've lived and traveled around the country and the world and this meal was a true pleasure. The service was great, the ambiance was perfect and the food was fantastic. Eating here is not just a biological function of fueling your body - it is truly a culinary experience."

  • "My wife and I enjoy the quiet romantic atmosphere where we can talk without yelling. The food is another added enjoyment. While the menu has changed since the arrival of the new Chef we found it confusing at first but we had a awesome waiter who was patient and explained it very well. The waiter was very well versed on the food. I had the Seafood dish and my wife had the Meat dish. My what an enjoyment that was. Five stars all the way around. Thank You for an enjoyable evening."

  • "The American delivers the finest service, food, and presentation in this city, and region. The staff delivered a dinning experience that you expect from a 5 Star rated restaurant . I recommend the tasting courses, that way you experience a wide selection of dishes, and beautiful presentations. Each dish delivered tastes you don't expect, with sauces packed with flavor. Expect to spend couple hours you will not want to rush, just enjoy !"

  • "Returned to Kansas City after many.many years and headed directly to The American Place to see if eating within a valentine was as good as I remembered it to be. It surpassed my memories... Hurrah!"

  • "Two of us had the meat tastings, and one had the vegetable tasting. We enjoyed 5 courses of exquisitely prepared, beautifully presented gourmet food unlike any we had previously experienced. Each bite was a wonderful combination of textures and flavors that made us smile, laugh, and exclaim in delight. Looking out over the lights of Crown Center and the Kansas City skyline made the experience even more enjoyable. Our servers were knowledgeable while at the same time managing to be helpful, friendly, and down to earth. We felt the price was quite reasonable. While we have eaten in many fine restaurants all over the world, we were glad to discover our finest meal was right here in Kansas City. A standing ovation to the chef and the staff!"

  • "The staff's attention to detail was impeccable! The flower arrangement was on the table, the special ordered birthday cake was wonderful, and the vegetarian entree offered was excellent. We really enjoyed the occasion and will remember it for many years."

  • "Interesting, unique and tasty flavor and ingredient combinations. Knowledgeable and attentive staff. Cocktails as creative as the cuisine."

  • "Fabulous staff, wonderful meal. Superb wine list. Even though they call it the American Restaurant, the concept seems more French to me. Meaning that the chefs make every taste count, no filler, no wasted bites. Very expensive so be prepared but worth every penny. Absolutely loved it. Kudos to the jazz duo, piano and vocals. Just great!!"

  • "This was a perfect birthday dinner. The view of the sunset over downtown, the impeccable service, the great romantic music, and the outstanding food and wine made a memory to treasure. We each had the 5-course tasting menu (one Meat and one Vegetable) with wine pairings and each course was spectacular: beautiful to look at, wonderful contrasting textures, tastes. I can't say enough! If I had a complaint it would be that it was so good that I ate it all and was a little overstuffed."

  • "Usually a spot on wonderful place to eat. They changed the menu and it stripped you of your choices. The pork belly and scallop were both overcooked."

  • "Not my cup of tea but lovely venue, great view in evening, impeccable service. Food better to photograph than to fill a stomach, artistry with edibles -- if that's your thing."

  • "The servings are small and the price is high. They don't have a regular dinner salad. We probably will not return. However, the service was excellent. So if you don't care about the food and the high price, I would highly recommend it for the view and the service."

  • "I particularly enjoyed the staff's making certain that our dining experience was special for us. Feeling as if we were the only, and most important guests was the perfect beginning to our evening at the KC opera."

  • "Chef Michael Corvino is creating gems from the kitchen that should not be missed by anyone who enjoys great food. Some of the ingredients and combinations may seem a bit unusual but I quickly realized that the combination of flavors was truly a delight to my taste buds. Dining with my wife and another couple of our friends was a delight that I hope to repeat in the future."

  • "Great place, great staff and amazing food. Each of my ten courses had so many different elements and they all worked together to create delicious and new flavors. Their foie gras is very rich and creamy and the banana dessert with bubble gum ice cream is reason alone to return over and over again."

  • "One of the top four best meals of my life. Chef is amazing. Food as art. The restaurant is gorgeous, service couldn't be better, and the food... OMG... Creative, beautifully plated, and... My mouth had a transcendental experience. Just perfect start to finish. Wow. Just wow!"

  • "The American is expensive. Portions are smaller than most eateries, but satisfying. The presentation is visually appealing, but I wasn't able to taste all the ingredients the menu said were in the dish. Wait staff is attentive and the restaurant called before our reservation to ask if it was a special occasion. It was and they acknowledged the birthday on the menu."

  • "They called to ask about food allergies and restrictions after I made the reservation. The menu was personalized with a title that I created - a very nice touch that my wife found meaningful. The little courses in between were so unusual and unexpected."

  • "The food was sometimes tasty but overwhelming the flavor a were a race to see how many ingredients could be maneuvered into one dish. Every single dish was overdone. It was $300 for three people and honestly we would have been better off at Capital Grille and it would be half the price.... We talked about it after we left and while the service and ambience were great the food was so so. The Chef and pastry chef are award winners.., but maybe only to judges."

  • "From the second I walked up to the building to the second I left the building I felt like I was taken care of. Every single person on the American staff made me feel welcome and at ease. The service staff was very knowledgeable of not only the menu and wines but other details like the architecture of the building and the restaurant history. Chef Michael Corvino came out and said hello and explained some of the dishes which was an awesome touch to the night. His food is outstanding. Nick's desserts were on par with Corvino's savory excellence. Can't say enough good stuff about the time my girlfriend and I had dining here. We'll definitely be back!"

  • "I had the sea scallops for dinner. Had a very funny texture to them. The wait staff was awesome. Very attentive. My wife had the chicken, very good dish. The Pork belly starter I had was fantastic. For the cheese course , I had the Blue cheese with chocolate bread , WOW, WOW, WOW!! My dessert was the Snickers. Candied Bacon incredible flavors. If you love interesting food, The American Restaurant is the place. Price was not bad at all. Yes it was expensive , but compared with The Melting Pot and such it fits right in. I highly recommend the American."

  • "The American Restaurant has been on my list for years. Waited for a special occasion and had a great time. Went with 2 other people who had never been there either. We were not familiar with the majority of foods on the menu and our waitress took the time to explain everything to use without making us feel dumb. Would highly recommend!"

  • "The American Restaurant is a Kansas City ICON establishment. The setting, formal but comfortable, is elegant. The gourmet preparations are always very good. The Chef sponsored appetizers are unique and are always well prepared and gracefully served. The wait staff is knowledgeable about the Chef preparations, attentive and cordial. The AR is always a great destination and especially for special events either on a personal basis or when sponsoring group events."

  • "Went for the first time during KCRW on 1/23. Food and service were outstanding. One of the best meals I ate all week and probably one of the best restaurants in KC. Flavors were unbelievable and everything was perfectly matched. Waiters suggestions matched mine and did try the dessert based on his recommendation and it was great. The tablet for drinks and dessert were a great idea and a topic for conversation. The Grits and Pork Bellies were a perfect match to the Scallops and to die for. Would highly recommend them as well as this restaurant. Will return."

  • "I was pleasantly impressed with the service and food at The American. I went with a small group for Restaurant Week, and we were promptly attended to by our waiter, who was helpful and knowledgeable about the menu. There were diverse options for each course, all appealing. The plating was interesting and beautiful. The size of each dish was perfectly appropriate, not too much given that it would be a three-course meal, but still left feeling exactly full enough. Everything was a delicious as it looked. We had a fantastic view of downtown. I would definitely recommend this restaurant."

  • "Friday's Restaurant Week-"date night" at the American Restaurant is beyond what we've experienced at any other dining establishment in KC. Each bite of food packed with flavors that were both surprising and delightful. We encountered truly welcoming and friendly staff, and left feeling that we will most definitely come back to see what the full menu offers. The dining room is a bit out-dated, and we had an unpleasant diner behind us-thus the reduced ambience rating. When speaking with the General Manager, he explained that they are totally "in" with Restaurant Week, and it showed (other restaurants could adopt this attitude-it made a difference)."

  • "The food presented to our table was the most imaginative and beautiful plating I have EVER seen in Kansas City. Cudos to the American for bringing Chef Corvino to KC for us to enjoy. Not only was the food beautiful, it was delicious! Fantastic wine list and presentation on the iPad, and Willie never disappoints with his spot on cocktails. A must for a special dinner with loved ones or to make a great impression for a business deal."

  • "The beet salad was delicious and I normally only like rosted beets. Every dish was delicious and a beautiful presentation. My scallops were plenty but my husband's chicken Lindo would leave hearty eaters hungry but this was a tasting menu and the portion size allowed him to enjoy dessert. Visit The American for the taste, service, and atmosphere. We happened to visit KC during Restaurant Week so prices were very inexpensive for a restaurant of this caliper. The hostess said food is half-priced during happy hour so if one wants to experience The American Restaurant but doesn't feel they can afford it, try during happy hour. I have not experienced service like this in 20 years, above all other restaurants. Definitely return when in KC."
