Diner Reviews
  • "I was told I wasn't allowed to reserve a table outside after I made the special request on open table. Chicken was a little dry but overall a good place to eat. Husband enjoyed the beer menu."

  • "I like sports bars. I like the atmosphere, ambiance, food and drink selections. Alehouse Columbia is an upscale take on this warm fuzzy, with an interesting beer and drink list bordering on the exceptional. The menu is simple and straight forward bar food, but its bar-food done well by a kitchen staff who cares. On our first visit, the restaurant was reasonably crowded on an early Wednesday evening in the late summer. Staffers we met were pleasant, prompt and courteous. The drink list is nothing short of fascinating. Service was prompt, the kitchen was very fast, which the two teens in our partly particularly appreciated. Alehouse is a little pricey but it's Columbia. Even so, we'll be back for sure."

  • "Basic bar food very well prepared and a great beer list. Would definitely recommend."

  • "I took one of my best friends here for her birthday and we split the mac and cheese flatbread, which was so yummy. Nice place even for business meals. Recommend getting reservations because they can get very busy during Friday and Saturday."

  • "The pretzel appetizer was amazing. I would also recommend the French Dip sandwhich. And, of course, there was a terrific beer selection. However, my one disappointment was the ribeye. It was... o.k. I do wish they had a "flight" selection. I tried six 5 oz. Oliver ales. The price was reasonable."

  • "Girls Night Out brought my friends and I to The Alehouse. Amazing selection of beers! Had the Ironman Pale Ale - perfect - and the fried egg burger - delicious and perfectly cooked. Great drinks, conversation, and food made for a great night out! Highly recommend The Alehouse!"

  • "Met some friends there and it was all ok. Brussels sprouts need to be a little less done and mushy but all was just ok. No desire to return."

  • "Went for our 2nd time this weekend with friends. Great food and extensive draft beer list. A bit pricey for an upscale "bar" environment, but a nice option right in the heart of Columbia. Reservations recommended for a Saturday night!"

  • "This was our third time dining at the Ale house. My husband loves the beer selection and the food. I have had both good and bad experiences with the food. Last time I ordered the Mac & Cheese with Crab and I hated it. The food was ver bland and I disliked the sauce. This time I tried the Spinach and Artichoke flatbread. I enjoyed it but the portion size was too big! It was made for two people to share! My husband had the Bratwurst burger which he liked. In the past he has tried the fish tacos and raved about them. I do wish they had a Veggie Burger on their menu. They just have meat ones. For vegetarians they have a Portabella mushroom sand which option."

  • "This was my first time visiting the Alehouse Columbia and I wasn't very impressed with the food or my drink. They were both very bland. I ordered crab stuffed tilapia with risotto and my drink was called a raspberry something...anyway, they were both tasteless like the food needed to be seasoned and the drink may or may not have been watered down. My friend who was with me ordered the exact same thing and agreed that everything was bland. I will give them another try and order something different because I have heard nice things about this place. Maybe it was just what I ordered."

  • "Dinner for four on a Friday, which is a good test for a restaurant. I like this place. Great beer, good food, easy to get to. It can be crowded, even though it's really big inside, so make reservations."

  • "My wife, 2 grown kids and I met for dinner prime time on a Friday night. It was packed. The beer menu alone had to be held onto after ordering to finish reading. Dinner was great from duck config grilled cheese, to a burger with a fried egg, to lobster Mac and cheese, to mustard crusted salmon. The kids are still talking about the skillet cookie ala mode for dessert. Well done."

  • "Menu was very ecclectic. We enjoyed everything we had at our table (pescado tacos, pork tacos, seafood cobb, steak sandwich, spinach/artichoke dip). They have a section of gluten-free beers ranging fro 6-55 dollars! Impressive. Service was slow, as they were very busy, but we were with long-time friends with much chatting going on, so we didn't mind that much. Atmosphere is very good--fun, hip."

  • "The fish and chips were not crisp. The burgers were good. The waiter was too busy to care about any one table, although he stopped multiple times, it was more like on the run, as if not waiting for the answer. The parking lot is a zoo, but, they are trying with valet parking. A mixed bag so to speak."

  • "This was my first experience at this restaurant and not only were the hostesses accomodating after we were late for our reservation but the service was excellent. The food was yummy and the drinks amazing. Perfect for a fun birthday location or good friends night out."

  • "We checked this place out due to good reviews. Placed a reservation but ended up waiting once we got to the restaurant for 15 minutes so it was a bit inconvenient due to our schedule. Although, it happens so it was no big deal. Once we saw the menu of all the different types of food, it was pretty exciting to see what our dishes would turn out. The food came out quick and looked great. Unfortunately, the food wasn't that great or near the quality we had expected considering the cost of meal. The beer selection seemed great but the food was sub par."

  • "I look forward to Thursdays when The Columbia Alehouse has their "Pint Glass Night" introducing about five different beers from a different craft brewery each week. The prices for 5 oz "flight size" pours are comparatively high, but at least they DO have these sizes whereas 2 other Alehouse's in the county don't serve some of the craft beers in this size and a third one won't serve ANY of their beers in this size. The two other Alehouse's that beat The Columbia Alehouse, in my opinion, not only also will serve any brew in 5 oz potions, but also are less expensive and have beer events for smaller groups where one can make friends more easily and count on seeing regular clients more often."

  • "The food on the menu sounded a lot better then it tasted. For the prices they were charging I expected a little better quality. The good came out very fast though which was good but I wish it would have taken longer it may have tasted better. All in all it was a great atmosphere and the live music was an added unforeseen bonus."

  • "We had reservations, but still had to wait to be seated. The beer selection is amazing, but the server didn't know which beers tasted most like a commercial brand. So, it felt like a shot in the dark when ordering. The Thai Mussels are great! My husband and our friend both orders steak an enjoyed them. I had the ahi and it was bland although fresh. It would have been nice to have a side dish with my entree. The steaks had sides, but not the fish (another member of our party had salmon). Overall, it was an ok experience. We'd go back since it's nearby."

  • "I have eaten here 3 times now and haven't liked anything I ordered so they are now on my "just order a burger" list of restaurants. I admit I like less salty, more healthy alternatives but I can usually find a few things at most restaurants that fit that bill. That said, they do typically have a good draft beer selection for my husband, but I'll stay away from their specialty cocktails since I haven't liked one yet and I usually do at other restaurants. They do groups fine - there were two large birthday groups seated right by us. Our server was very good - as busy as she was, she made sure to keep our water glasses full. Since I didn't eat most of my dinner, I had room for an excellent skillet dessert."

  • "Love this place. Beer list is amazing. Service is attentive, but not pushy. Food is always well prepared."
    Dined on 2/21/2014
  • "This was my second time there. Not as good as the first time I went. The tostada nachos had too many jalepenos to the point where they were too hot to eat and our flat bread was burnt. I understand they are better known for their craft beer but they could improve on their wine selections for the non beer drinkers."

  • "Great place to watch games and drink one of about 100 different craft brews they have on tap. Food is pretty darn good itself. Definitely a great spot for local Columbia residence."

  • "The service was amazing from start to finish, hostess to server. The ale house had an extraordinary list of beers on tap. My husband and I had a great time catching up and we didn't have to shout over the noise. We will be back."

  • "A classy addition to Colombia, and almost always busy with a wait. Their three bars are always bustling with people, but TVs are visible from most seats regardless. Extensive and original beer list, excellent descriptions and knowledgeable staff, can easily make your own custom flights to try different things. The food is just different enough to intrigue, yet still plenty of comfortable bar grub. Duck confit, kobe sliders, flatbreads, burgers, ribs, and a customizable mac'n'cheese bake are just a few of the delicious dishes I've sampled. I've never left unsatisfied, though with all the variety of beer to sample and foods to try the bill can catch you by surprise. A classy place with just the right balance between pub and restaurant."

  • "My boo and I had a reservation for V-Day Dinner and it was seamless from the start, we took advantage of the complimentary valet which had us in the restaurant and at our table in less than 2 minutes after arriving. We were sat a great table and service was good. The server's recommendation was right on point, they were offering NY Strip as a valentines day special which I would have ordered but after asking the server he recommended the filet, I got the filet and was not disappointed at all! My boo got the soba noodles with salmon and she was very satisfied. But for beginners we got the buffalo schrimp appetizer and it was bangin!! It set the tone for the rest of the meal and we were very pleased! Beers were great too!!"

  • "The waiter first said that there wasn't any specials for lunch because on St. Valentine, they only have the dinner special. The waiter was slow, the drinks weren't anything out of ordinary, the tostadas were awful and we ended waiting a long time for them when the place was not even full. The sliders were dry and overcooked and we were not asked for the term of the meat like other places we have gone to. It was a poor experience and did almost ruined our day. Never going back and I won't recommend other people to go."

  • "It was Valentine's Day and we ordered off the menu, not the price-fixed dinner. I considered it a bonus that we could do that, but it might have affected the quality somewhat. The Ale House Chop Salad was very good, but the Braised Short Rib was overdone (well seasoned, but very overcooked). As always, the service was fantastic - friendly and attentive. The beer selection was amazing, and you get to choose from 2 or 3 different sizes for each beer, which I especially liked since I wanted more than a "taste" but still wanted to have a sampling. Although it was crowded, we had a booth that was spacious and quiet. It made for a delightful Valentine's Day dinner."

  • "I was very excited to try this restaraunt for my birthday. We arrived early so we sat ar the back bar and had excellent nachos and wonderful drinks. The bartender was friendly and very helpful. Unfortunately the evening went downhill when we went to our table. We asked our server for recommendations. I ordered the Mac and cheese which he said was amazing and my friend ordered the fish tacos. The Mac and cheese was okay but not the best I had ever eaten. My friend's tacos were inedible and we waited for over 10 minutes for the waiter to come back and check on her. It was clear he avoided our table since he only had 3 tables and we had to ask him to take the tacos off the check. The manager was even worse and unapologetic for this situation."

  • "This was our first visit to the Columbia Ale House. Our friends had eaten there several times and encouraged us to go and we are so glad we did! The portobello flatbread was great and my side of brussels sprouts was a winner! My husband and my friend had the French dip and they said they would order this again. The beer selection was above average. The location is obviously a favorite during happy-hour and the noise level attested to that. Fortunately we had made reservations and asked for a booth that was slightly away from the noise, which was a wise decision. Parking is a bit of a nightmare, which is why they offer valet service. An expansion of the parking lot would be to their benefit. We will go back but maybe not on a Friday."

  • "My parents came to visit, so I decided to take them to the Ale House, and they loved it. The food was delicious and filling, and the beer list was great and had a variety of options, not your typical draft/bottle list. Also, I am on a gluten free diet and they offer gluten free alcoholic beverages, and a gluten free menu. Great place to eat, I recommend it!"

  • "This has become one of my "regular" spots. The ever-changing beer list is great and the food is awesome. Went to my first build-your-burger night on Monday and was very impressed by the many options. The servers are very friendly and attentive. A few menu items i'd recommend-the pretzels, the turkey burger, and the mac and cheese. Go and take your friends!"

  • "We especially wanted to visit the Alehouse on 1/30 because it was featuring ales from the Brewer's Art, in Baltimore--one of our favorite places to eat and drink. The bar scene on these guest brew nights can be overwhelmingly loud, but the Alehouse honored my request to be seated at a distance from the bar. My husband and I could hear each other fairly easily, and the guest ales certainly did not disappoint. My only regret about this place is that it doesn't have more choices for vegetarians. The things we've ordered, however, have generally been quite good. We go here often."

  • "I have been to the Ale House many times and have enjoyed each experience. However, when I went for restaurant week the waiter told us they were out of the special. Period…no replacements, suggestions, or substitutions. We arrived at 5:30 on a Sunday, so it wasn't even late in the evening after a big rush. My husband then ordered a hamburger and I ordered a flatbread, but that is not the Rockfish they had promised. The food was good, as usual, but we were disappointed and felt let down."

  • "My wife and I are new in town and found this restaurant through Open Table. I looked at Yelp and saw that it had good reviews there so we made a reservation for dinner with a friend. When we got there, the parking lot was full. They do have complementary valet parking though I didn't use it. I spotted somewhere to park and went in. I checked in with the host and had about a 15 min wait until my table was ready. When we sat down, the server showed up their extensive beer list. They keep at least 20 beers on tap, many that they make themselves. I ordered the fixed price meal and got salad, rockfish, and pumpkin mousse. It was all excellent. The noise level was my only down point of the experience."
