Over the years, The Ahwahnee Dining Room has played host to presidents, royalty and celebrities, in addition to countless visitors, and it continues to be regarded as one of the most impressive dining rooms in the United States.

The Ahwahnee Dining Room conveys a feeling of elegance and refinement while maintaining a comfortable, natural atmosphere. The logs of stripped and polished sugar pine, which support the 34-foot-high beamed ceilings, reinforce the rustic ambiance that is reflective of The Ahwahnee’s mountain surroundings. Wrought iron candelabras suspended from the sugar pine timbers, together with iron candelabras on the tables, create a medieval atmosphere.

Under the culinary leadership of Executive Chef Percy Whatley, The Ahwahnee Dining Room offers traditional California cuisine for breakfast and dinner daily. An array of excellent California wines are also featured on the menu.Continued

  • "The setting is majestic- outside the tall pines partly shield the high sierra sights of Yosemite and inside the massive beams high ceilings and tall candlelit tapers speak to an earlier grander time. The ambience is warm, and the service is authoritative but not at all stuffy. The wine list was large and understandably Californian in emphasis. The food was remarkably good- the best I've ever had in a National Park. Cuts of beef were cooked to perfection, the fish was fresh. Appetizer scallops in deliciously creamy "grits"(polenta) were enough for a meal. The menu was just contemporary enough, with nods to current trends- kale salad, for example. Our dessert of red velvet cake was a massively decadent 4 layer fudge cake in deep red."

  • "We returned for our 5th wedding anniversary. They greeted us and seated us at the Honeymoon table. It offers a beautiful view and is tucked away near the window. Our waiter, George, while soft spoken, was excellent. We truly enjoyed our anniversary dinner. We plan to return again! "

My sister-in-law & I both got the prime rib-it was melt-in-your-mouth excellent.   • "The excellent service, spectacular architecture, beautiful views would make the food delicious even if it wasn't -but it was! Not having visited for a number of years, the food was far better than the last visit. From the lamb shank to the fish, it was well prepared, presented-- and very tasty. It is pricey (about $10 each more than the Lodge) -and worth every cent. Be sure to make dinner reservations well in advance. "

  • "We have been going to the A dining room for many years mostly for the ambiance, and usually for the food. Once in a while it has a hiccup like this last weekend with a very blah Caesar Salad. It is pricey but we find it worth the money."

  • "We had five people on vacation in Yosemite National Park. We wanted to experience the Ahwahnee Lodge, so we made breakfast reservations. The Ahwahnee Dining Room was a classic lodge-type environment, with excellent, cheerful wait staff and well-placed tables. We all chose the breakfast buffet. The bacon and sausage were good, but the real stars were both the scrambled eggs and the pancakes. And the coffee was strong and tasty. We were all glad for our experience in the classic Ahwahnee Dining Room. I hope we get a chance to go back soon."

  • "We spent 3 1/2 days at Ahwahnee, eating 3 breakfasts and and 3 dinners in the main dining room. The service was excellent. The dinner menu, presentation, taste and ambience were outstanding. For breakfast there was a great variety of choices, but some of the ordered dishes were too heavy. The food in the bar was wonderful for lunch and light dinners. Lovely wines, beers and mixed drinks were available to accompany and meal."

The meal was luke warm, overly salty and serving size varied so, from small to genormous hard to tell what you were in store for. In general yositmite needs new happy to be there people staffing all park services."

  • "my husband and i ordered the mahi-mahi. the portions were so tiny in about 5 bites we were done with the fish. luckily i ordered a side of cauliflower and we shared that and a dessert. we noticed the lady next to us ordered the same and got an additional entree. portions were too small after an active day hiking and biking. you might want to rethink portion size. the sauce and bird's nest potatoes were tasty and dessert was nice."

Terrible experience - poor service and poorly trained wait staff, a limited menu with all offerings over priced for the quality and portion size, and a dress code not enforced all made this anything but a fine dining experience. When I spoke with the dining manager upon checkout, he appeared somewhat interested in our experience, but did not offer to make any amends to ensure our satisfaction and continued business."

  • "When I eat at an expensive restaurant, I expect food and service excellence. The Awahanee has a great reputation but we were disappointed. The lobster bisque was wonderful. The ahi was very good, but not better than most restaurants. Same for the prime rib dinner. What was most disappointing was slow service. They never refilled our bread basket, we sat for a long time with empty wine glasses. My husband even turned his empty glass upside down! We were drinking by the glass and didn't get our second glass until our main course was served. The wait staff didn't come close to our table much of the time so we couldn't call them over. There was a long wait between our salad course and main dish. Empty wine glasses and dirty dishes for too long."

  • "My husband has taken me several times to the Awahnee Dining Room for my Birthday dinner. I've heard it said that this dining room is the most beautiful in America! I passionately agree! But please leave the children at home or in the lodge with a sitter. This is a very special and romantic dining room that deserves adult respect and peacefulness. Also, the pianist plays the grand piano all throughout the evening. For birthdays, you may be presented with a special dessert. We highly recommend this dining room for any meal. There is also a dress code (thank goodness). I love it!"

My children were excited to get "dressed up" for dinner and were even more entranced by the wonderful piano player who took requests. The food was very good too. It's a must do dinner for a trip into Yosemite. Make sure to book rez far in advance."

  • "The Ahwahnee dining room is one of the truly spectacular places to eat in the world. We were a party of 7, and we enjoyed 5 meals there over two days. The service was excellent at 3 of our meals, but painfully slow the other 2 - they failed to recognize that we had two active boys in our party, and a leisurely pace of service was not what we wanted. The food is mostly very good, sometimes excellent, but always expensive. You pay for the location, the view, and the incredibly beautiful and impressive dining room. If that is of no value to you, then go eat at the food court in the Yosemite Lodge."

  • "The food servers and their helpers are always perfect here but the main fault of this dining room is the staff that make/keep the reservations! I had made reservations for both nights there and Sunday brunch. When we called down on the second day to confirm our dinner reservations they said we didn't have any!!! It was cancelled for NO reason! I was livid, being that it was our anniversary and wanted to celebrate - why would they cancel? The dining room was not full - there were empty tables and if they were short of servers, they should have called and told us without canceling!!! Eventually, they got us back on the schedule but not without making us feel unwelcomed."

The dinner meals were absolutely wonderful -- all of us enjoyed our selections each night. Be prepared for a very, very leisurely experience. I appreciate the time to enjoy the food and ambiance but for both of the dinners we thought we had been forgotten. Breakfast is also excellent but if you don't chose the buffet breakfast and elect to order off of the menu, it will add another 45 minutes to your experience."

  • "My Husband and I love the Ahwahnee and have been fortunate to stay on several occasions. Our last visit we traveled with family members that had never been to Yosemite. Our first meal in the dining room was lunch, the Caesar Salad & Cheeseburgers were great. The home fries served with the burgers were to die for, the perfect crisp outside and very fluffy interior. Craving them since we came home! Our dinner treat was the Prime Rib, Pork Chop & Lamb Shank. All Yummy and cooked to perfection. We all shared the Boysenberry Cheesecake, simplicity at it;s best! Can you tell we love to eat! DO NOT SKIP THE SUNDAY BRUNCH! Anything and everything you could ask for! Can't wait to go back. One of my favorite places in the world!"

  • "During our stay (March 20-21), the food was, well, ATROCIOUS. Shockingly so. A split order of prime rib was served, weirdly, cut horizontally. Huh? Who cuts a prime rib horizontally? The ridiculously thin portions were way overcooked. The broccoli was rubbery, the whipped potatoes way over salted, and the Yorkshire pudding unrecognizable and inedible. The service was friendly and personable, which made experiencing the truly lousy food all the more poignant. For breakfast, the large dining hall had just one person at the egg station. The line was stupidly long, I'm sure partly because the rest of the buffet was so bad. The coffee was almost undrinkably bitter. Does no one there nowadays know what decent food and drink should taste like?"

  • "Family of 4 had a delicious dinner in a beautiful dining room. Service was excellent and the piano player added to the elegant setting. Scallop appetizer was really good and my salmon was cooked perfectly. Kids ate all of their mushroom ravioli and husband enjoyed his steak. We shared a cheesecake for dessert, also very good. The El Capitan Martini was strong, just the way I like it. Expect to pay about $50 - 60 a person, but it's worth it."

  • "Keep in mind you are in a national park and outside is one of the most spectacular views on earth. You might not expect much for food, but the Ahwahnee isn't serving your ordinary park food. Make an early reservation and enjoy the view before dark. The food is fresh, well prepared, and true to its inspiration. For example, Moroccan lamb shank and the swordfish had the right spices and accompaniments. There is killer chocolate cake for two, that easily could be shared by four, and which we took a pass on. The boysenberry pie with vanilla ice cream was excellent and didn't leave us wishing we had gone for the chocolate cake. The wine list is extensive with some hard to fine California wines, such as Stoney Hill. Good service and great room."

Everyone ordered something different, and each of us loved our personal choices. The piano music was beautiful, at just the right sound level. Our service was personal, attentive and efficient. We enjoyed our dining time so much, and we had beautiful views wherever we looked. It was a special way for us to remember our daughter, Lana's, life. Thank you."
