  • "When we finally found this restaurant we almost left without going in. Don't let the outside appearance impact your decision to dine here. It "ain't" formal but boy is it great. Service was outstanding, it seemed like everyone on the staff helped each other constantly. Menu was limited but food was great, presentation was on on par with a very upscale restaurant. Don't miss this one!"

  • "My husband and I went to the Admiral last July for our anniversary and decided to go back this year for our 40th wedding anniversary!! I made reservations several weeks in advance and was a little skeptical they would be ready for us. As soon as we walked in, they took us to our table. The hostess could tell I wouldn't fit at the booth because I am short and she immediately moved us to a better table without us asking! You don't get that kind of service at most places. The food is always outstanding. The Admiral is a must go to spot for dinner whenever we visit Asheville."

  • "We had a wonderful birthday meal at the Admiral. We went early and were surprised to see several empty tables at 6 and 6:30. The waitress was especially accomodating, replacing my wine when she saw I was not enthusiastic about it. The flat iron steak was delicious. I ordered a salad and regretted that this did not allow the culinary talent of the artists to be displayed with their sauces, etc."

  • "I went to The Admiral on a recent trip from NYC. It had come highly recommended by friends in the area so I thoroughly expected to enjoy it. I did not expect one of the best meals I've ever had! All 3 of my small plates were so perfectly seasoned and prepared. The lamb tortellini, in particular, was phenomenal! The bold flavor of the lamb was perfectly balanced with the acidity of the lemon. The pumpkin seeds not only added a lovely nuttiness but also a delicate crunch to round out the texture. Perfection!"

  • "We stayed in downtown Asheville but The Admiral was recommended by a local friend of ours & the bartender at a bar near our hotel. Always listen to the locals! About a 10 min drive but worth the cab fare. Mussels were FANTASTIC! Tortellini was a little different but good & so was the Ribeye. Would absolutely recommend!"

  • "I continue to be amazed at the inventive and unique presentations of the restaurants in Asheville and this place is no exception. My girlfriend and I dine out regularly at fairly nice restaurants and just really enjoyed the food, ambience and the eclectic feel of it. It may be a challenge to get a table here, but it is certainly worth the effort."

  • "I am continually impressed by the creativity and quality of the menu. While the mussels are a "go to" item, the ribeye steak I had this weekend may have been the best steak I've ever eaten. Can't wait to return very soon!"

  • "This restaurant is special because from the moment you walk in to the time you leave, you are treated with professionalism. The flavors in our small plates were unique and were taste sensations(especially the Ceviche with watermelon). Little things like perfectly baked bread for the mussels were just another part of the care that is taken. Thanks to the chefs and serving staff for another lovely dining evening."

  • "Fantastic as always. Wine and cheese options were only above average but everything else was 5 star."

  • "We recently dined at the Admiral. My sister from Rochester,NY joined us. It was a delightful evening. The service was excellent, the food was exceptional and the wine was very good. We would return and recommend this restaurant to others."

  • "We drive iver from Maggie Valley at least a few times each season. The food is always amazing. I usually get the huge sea scallops and they always melt in your mouth! Loved the presentation with roasted corn bisque."

  • "Our food was eclectic and good and our waitress was outstanding. This is a very popular restaurant as the only time we could get reservations for was 5 PM. There is absolutely no parking except on dark side streets that were frightening to walk based on the area of the city. The place is dark and uninviting from the exterior but if you can get by those negatives, you will have an unusual, pleasant experience."

  • "I read about The Admiral a couple years ago but was in Asheville with my two small children and decided it wasn't the place for kids. Went in July 2014 (2 years later) and it's rated just as well, and still not the place for kids. It's not meant to be. That said, the food, the service, the drinks, the atmosphere, all absolutely fantastic. We were seated before our reservation time. A little confusion with our drinks from the bar, but the waitress sorted it out as soon as she was aware we hadn't received our drinks. We were 2 people and ordered a salad and 4 small plates to share, and we were stuffed at the end. Every dish that came out was better than the last. The place is exceptionally exceptional and you must go but leave kids home."

  • "The food was truly outstanding, inventive and delicious. The appetizers looked so good that my husband decided to try three of them instead of ordering an entrée and they were equally good. I had the cauliflower mousse and it was outstanding, then the halibut that was the silkiest fish I've even eaten. Can't wait to go back there and try something else."

  • "So happy with our date night at The Admiral! Service was attentive and laid back. Food was incredible - creative, delicious and fun to eat. Great variety on the menu and inspiring for us to cook at home. Atmosphere was relaxed - everything you'd expect from West Asheville. We will definitely go back and have already recommended to our friends."

  • "At first sight you may say why did I have to make reservations 2 weeks in advance for this place but just wait till you get inside. This places main focuse is the food and they nailed it. Abby was waitress and she was a wonderful guide to our dining experience. We decided to order slowly, like you do a a tapas resturant and that was fine with Abby. My wife's favorite was the lamb tortollini. The lamb was shredded with perfect sweetness. I was really look forward to the steak tart tart and it did not disappoint, you have to try it! My favorite was the scallops dish that evening. The scollops where cooked perfect, but the best part was the smoked corn bisque that was the base of the dish. If you are anywhere in the USA it worth the drive!"

  • "don't let the building's appearances fool you - gourmet food and good service! I had the mussels small plate, and my husband had the duck confit small plate, and the scallops entre - all were very good! A great find!"

  • "My son and I went to the Admiral for his 18th birthday. It was quite possibly the best meal we've ever eaten -- definitely the most memorable. I am not an adventurous eater, but I decided to try whatever he wanted. We had four small plates: steak tartare, lamb tortellini, flat iron steak and duck. We also had a yummy cheese plate and cauliflower mousse -- unusual and delicious -- for our appetizers. For dessert, we chose the chocolate truffle cups -- oh my gracious, it was beyond good! It was a wonderful evening and a fabulous way to celebrate. We look forward to visiting again the next time we are in Asheville. The wait staff was attentive, yet unobtrusive. All around just an outstanding experience. Thanks to your entire staff!"

  • "This place was recommended to us by a chef friend, and we would have never found it just driving by--it's in such an unassuming building! But it was sublime!!! The cauliflower mousse was out of this world. And I appreciated the small plate-style menu. It allowed my husband and I to try 4 dishes without feeling too full. It was a great experience, and we highly recommend it!"

  • "Visit on July 9 was great; we ordered the scallops and flat iron steak. Had ordered scallops once before and enjoyed that dish the most; however, the food here is delicious and unique. Taste buds are definitely pleased; flavors and seasonings are distinct. Wine list is nice and house wines are very good. Nathan is enthusiastic and very helpful. French press coffee and dessert really topped things off with a tour of even more unique combination of flavors. We will definitely be back."

  • "Prior to making a reservation I had been informed by others not to let the surroundings fool me. Admittedly I was still skeptical after seeing the neighboring gas station covered in grafiti art. My mind was quickly put at ease when I entered this hidden gem. The staff was well spoken and charming. The real highlight was the food. The cavatelli dish was out of this world. This will be our new spot....."

  • "This is an old neighborhood bar converted into a restaurant. My son and I had dinner (mussels in a tomato sauce, watermelon gazpacho, BBQ pork chop, scallops in cream sauce and a fruit tort. We greatly enjoyed all of it. I am gluten intolerant and our server was very knowledgeable and suggested various alternatives and modifications. We were totally pleased with our evening. Parking is a bit difficult."

  • "Prior experiences have been better, but overall still a great meal. The Mussels, as dependably wonderful as ever. The Halibut was perfect and the Peach Cake with Basil Ice Cream and Custard was over the top delicious. The exception on this evening was the Flat Iron Steak was unnecessarily sauced and the side potatoes were so overwhelmed with a different sauce you couldn't taste any potato. Sadly, the plates major characters had been reduced to sauce vehicles. Hopefully our waitress brought the noticeably unfinished portions to the chefs attention."

  • "The use of online site to get or confirm reservations will result in spamming and misuse of you email address. Horrible experience to get them to not abuse that confidentially dont use the online system for this restaurant!"

  • "I got a tip from a lady at the Asheville Visitor center about the Admiral. I looked it up on internet for reviews and the jest that I got was that it was a "diamond in the rough" so to speak. That about nails it. The outside look isn't impressive,..and one may not even realize that it is a restaurant. However, once inside and the service and food kick in,....you feel like you are in a 5 star restaurant. Fantastic food,...and that is what eating places are all about. THE FOOD!!!! the ambiance and eye appeal may be important to many folks,..and those folks are surely happy eating at most any chain type place. But,...none of those places can match the food and offerings that we got at the Admiral. FANTASTIC!!"

  • "a fabulous dining gem in Asheville! we were visiting the area and had heard about the admiral and we were thrilled with the dinner and great service."

  • "The appetizers (quail egg tempura and cauliflower mousse) were unique, if not overly tasty. My scallops were bathing in a delicious squash sauce/puree with a zucchini strip floating nearby, but the lack of a starch (maybe smashed potatoes, rice, noodles, quinoa, etc.) to sop up some of the liquid was unfortunate. Even our excellent waiter, Nathan, noticed this and offer the four of us a plateful of delicious crusty bread to share without our asking. The salad was very fresh, but small, and the single spicy nasturtium leaf was a nice touch. The deserts were also very good. I'm not one who typically rates on quantity, but sometimes there should be a little more food for the money. Overall, a satisfying, if less than perfect, experience."

  • "Loved the menu, tho limited. Funky place, but I would rather go somewhere with some atmosphere. Also, very dark and the parking can be difficult. The waitress helped us with choices by recommending that we share small plates."

  • "The difficulty of gaining a reservation has more to do with the number of seats and less with the value of the meal served. Not to say this isn't a worthy establishment."

  • "Wonderful, as always. The wait staff is excellent. In addition to being knowledgeable about the wines, our server was funny and personable without being intrusively chummy. And the food! The food is of such quality that it's best to put the fork down between mouthfuls so as to savor and make the palate adventure last longer. Such a pleasure to find that level of consistently good food. You don't have to worry that this fairly expensive meal is the one you could have done better at home, as is regrettably the case with some other of Asheville's finer restaurants. This is the place to bring friends visiting from anywhere in the world. It is an unusual spot for such fine dining, which, of course, makes it all the more fun."

  • "This place definitely needs some good vegetarian selections and, with all the healthy meats available in the area, it would definitely improve the menu to add some local, organic animal product options. A very small and limited menu option. And no dairy alternatives, even for coffee."

  • "We made our third trip to the Admiral and have always been wowed. This time we brought friends, who from outside said "Really? This is it?" and then said "Wow" on entering, and "Oh my goodness" when the food was tasted. It is worth the drive and the challenging parking---even coming from Atlanta!"

  • "We took a couple of friends from Raleigh to celebrate their 28th anniversary to The Admiral last Friday night. When we drove up to the restaurant, I heard my friend's husband say " I guess I'll have the cheeseburger"! Once we were inside, they were pleasantly surprised. Everyone loved the ambience and we could not have had a better server. She was very knowledgeable about the menu an was very helpful. She was there when we needed her, but was not obtrusive. The food was impeccable and my friends were so impressed. They told me that I had found a gem of a restaurant and kept thanking me. We had a wonderful evening! The only downside was that I had to go to Weight Watchers the next day and I had gained 2 lbs! It was worth it!"
