Diner Reviews
  • "Prior experiences have been better, but overall still a great meal. The Mussels, as dependably wonderful as ever. The Halibut was perfect and the Peach Cake with Basil Ice Cream and Custard was over the top delicious. The exception on this evening was the Flat Iron Steak was unnecessarily sauced and the side potatoes were so overwhelmed with a different sauce you couldn't taste any potato. Sadly, the plates major characters had been reduced to sauce vehicles. Hopefully our waitress brought the noticeably unfinished portions to the chefs attention."

  • "The use of online site to get or confirm reservations will result in spamming and misuse of you email address. Horrible experience to get them to not abuse that confidentially dont use the online system for this restaurant!"

  • "This is an old neighborhood bar converted into a restaurant. My son and I had dinner (mussels in a tomato sauce, watermelon gazpacho, BBQ pork chop, scallops in cream sauce and a fruit tort. We greatly enjoyed all of it. I am gluten intolerant and our server was very knowledgeable and suggested various alternatives and modifications. We were totally pleased with our evening. Parking is a bit difficult."

  • "I got a tip from a lady at the Asheville Visitor center about the Admiral. I looked it up on internet for reviews and the jest that I got was that it was a "diamond in the rough" so to speak. That about nails it. The outside look isn't impressive,..and one may not even realize that it is a restaurant. However, once inside and the service and food kick in,....you feel like you are in a 5 star restaurant. Fantastic food,...and that is what eating places are all about. THE FOOD!!!! the ambiance and eye appeal may be important to many folks,..and those folks are surely happy eating at most any chain type place. But,...none of those places can match the food and offerings that we got at the Admiral. FANTASTIC!!"

  • "Loved the menu, tho limited. Funky place, but I would rather go somewhere with some atmosphere. Also, very dark and the parking can be difficult. The waitress helped us with choices by recommending that we share small plates."

  • "a fabulous dining gem in Asheville! we were visiting the area and had heard about the admiral and we were thrilled with the dinner and great service."

  • "Pleasant find; bread with home-made butter, excellent, as were mussels. Steak tartare too coarse & fatty never asked if there was a problem with it (again - I might have had 2 bites) and I probably should have requested that they remove the charge or get another app. Scallops were plentiful and cooked perfectly, but needed to be seasoned - there was an excellent sauce, but they still needed salt. Ribeye had great bacon marmalade sauce, but cut was highly veined. Minor substitution requests were pleasantly honored, and the tater tots were awesome. Peanut butter semi fredo was a great desert. We found a few reasonable wine options and enjoyed a bottle of Chappellet, but frequently had to refill our glasses ourselves."

  • "The appetizers (quail egg tempura and cauliflower mousse) were unique, if not overly tasty. My scallops were bathing in a delicious squash sauce/puree with a zucchini strip floating nearby, but the lack of a starch (maybe smashed potatoes, rice, noodles, quinoa, etc.) to sop up some of the liquid was unfortunate. Even our excellent waiter, Nathan, noticed this and offer the four of us a plateful of delicious crusty bread to share without our asking. The salad was very fresh, but small, and the single spicy nasturtium leaf was a nice touch. The deserts were also very good. I'm not one who typically rates on quantity, but sometimes there should be a little more food for the money. Overall, a satisfying, if less than perfect, experience."

  • "The difficulty of gaining a reservation has more to do with the number of seats and less with the value of the meal served. Not to say this isn't a worthy establishment."

  • "This restaurant is consistently good. Chef's fusion of ingredients are wonderful."

  • "Wonderful, as always. The wait staff is excellent. In addition to being knowledgeable about the wines, our server was funny and personable without being intrusively chummy. And the food! The food is of such quality that it's best to put the fork down between mouthfuls so as to savor and make the palate adventure last longer. Such a pleasure to find that level of consistently good food. You don't have to worry that this fairly expensive meal is the one you could have done better at home, as is regrettably the case with some other of Asheville's finer restaurants. This is the place to bring friends visiting from anywhere in the world. It is an unusual spot for such fine dining, which, of course, makes it all the more fun."

  • "This place definitely needs some good vegetarian selections and, with all the healthy meats available in the area, it would definitely improve the menu to add some local, organic animal product options. A very small and limited menu option. And no dairy alternatives, even for coffee."

  • "We made our third trip to the Admiral and have always been wowed. This time we brought friends, who from outside said "Really? This is it?" and then said "Wow" on entering, and "Oh my goodness" when the food was tasted. It is worth the drive and the challenging parking---even coming from Atlanta!"

  • "We took a couple of friends from Raleigh to celebrate their 28th anniversary to The Admiral last Friday night. When we drove up to the restaurant, I heard my friend's husband say " I guess I'll have the cheeseburger"! Once we were inside, they were pleasantly surprised. Everyone loved the ambience and we could not have had a better server. She was very knowledgeable about the menu an was very helpful. She was there when we needed her, but was not obtrusive. The food was impeccable and my friends were so impressed. They told me that I had found a gem of a restaurant and kept thanking me. We had a wonderful evening! The only downside was that I had to go to Weight Watchers the next day and I had gained 2 lbs! It was worth it!"

  • "We were warned that this restaurant was nothing to look at in a not-so-safe part of town. It appears to have been a dive bar at some point in its history. That being said, we were thrilled with our food and the service was outstanding! We parked on the street and walked 3 blocks to the restaurant. Our reservation was at 5:30 and it was still daylight when we left. We did not feel unsafe in any way and were glad that we were able to get a reservation!!"

  • "Our last three visits to The Admiral have found it on a slide into mediocrity. The latest time, the three in our party who had eaten here many times found the familiar menu favorites, such as the sweetbreads, to be prepared in such a haphazard manner as to be almost inedible. Of the five, three found their dinner mediocre, one "greasy as at the Outback Steakhouse", and the fifth rejected her entree altogether. But believe it or not, poor as the food was, the service was even worse. Our party waited five minutes for drink orders to be taken, and 25 MINUTES for entrees to be served after ordering. This after I had bragged to our out of town guests that The Admiral was one of the few places in AVL with professional service."

  • "The food was impeccable. The service was fantastic from the hostess, waitress, chef, and bartenders...the staff is great. Definitely enjoy a delicious and creative meal here!"

  • "The Admiral is a quintessential high caliber (though not stuffy) neighborhood restaurant that blends into the surroundings with warmth that is also a welcoming environment for the many visitors and folks passing through town. The non static menu format is varied in options of both style and price range which is perfect for two, small groups or business dining. Whether it be the extended multi course meal or just small plates with drinks the Admiral has you covered. After this first visit, I left very full and satisfied but with the desire to return as soon as possible."

  • "Unless someone told you about The Admiral, it's not a place you'd find or go to. But the menu is creative; chefs do an incredible job with everything they prepare. I'm a mussle "junkie," and the mussles there are the best I've ever had. Ditto for the beet salad. Overall, we had a great experience."

  • "The Admiral is a gourmet find! Don't let the exterior - or interior! - fool you. The food is excellent! Our party ordered everything from small plates & entrees to dessert and we enjoyed every bite. The staff are low key, but extremely helpful and friendly. This place us a gem!!"

  • "Great food , great service. This was my 10th visit to the Admiral and I've never been disappointed. Very professional waitstaff and great presentation. Love the flatiron steak and the desserts. Had a squash soup this time which had so many wonderful flavors that it was hard to tell how it was made. The menu is extremely creative. Reminds me of a JK Rawlings novel."

  • "I had read about The Admiral and had to try it for myself. It looks like a mechanic shop from the outside but what you experience on the inside will amaze you. I will return!"

  • "The Admiral offered unique combinations and flavors. They turned "Peas and Carrots" into pea noodles, carrot gnocchi, whipped honey goat cheese and pickled cherries -- somehow it really worked. And that was just the appetizer. It was a taste adventure we enjoyed."

  • "The food was fantastic. We tried a few dishes. Sashimi tuna, beef tartare and the seared scallops. The beef tartare is a must have. It come with a sous vide egg that spreads like butter. The sea scallops were fabulous as well. The service was outstanding. We have nothing but good things to say. We will be returning often!"

  • "Have wanted to try The Admiral since we moved here 3 years ago. The outside is certainly not impressive, but our meal was excellent and so was the service. We live in Arden and our friends came from Waynesville, so it was very convenient for everybody. We plan to meet our friends there again!"

  • "The Admiral has always been one of our top choices in Asheville. It must have been an off evening the last time we were there because things weren’t up to their incredibly high standards, and we left disappointed. We had to give them another chance, and are we glad we did! Nathan did an outstanding job, even mixing a special drink for the four of us that wasn’t on the menu. The food was fantastic—arugula salad, smoky PEI mussels, lobster carbonara, and mahi mahi with coconut curry risotto. We were so full we had to share a Vietnamese coffee panna cotta. Even with roughly 600 restaurants in Asheville, The Admiral is almost always booked. That’s because there is a big difference between very good and absolutely delicious."

  • "We had a wonderful experience at the Admiral. It was every bit as good as we hoped it would be. The seafood tasted very fresh as well. "

  • "Our most recent trip to The Admiral included some out of town guests from New Orleans. Very well-traveled foodies, these folks raved about all the food we ordered - which was a sizable sampling from the menu. We have dined at The Admiral probably 10 times and have never once had a mediocre meal. Definitely one of our favorite dining establishments in town!"

  • "Our experience at the Admiral was everything I expected it to be. The only thing I wish is that we could have moved around the restaurant during our visit to see it from all it's different perspectives, like at the bar. The food was very inventive and delicious and the servers were excellent. My husband and I enjoyed celebrating our anniversary at such a unique and reputable joint."
