  • "I was prepared by friends to" not judge a book by its cover" but I was pleasantly surprised by the interior of the restaurant. It was more spacious than envisaged from the outside and had a special "holiday" flavor with a well patronized bar scene. The arugula salad was particularly good and set the scene for the rest of the meal. The Sauvignon Blanc was impressive. We will be back. Thanks "

  • "Best chicken I have ever eaten! Food was delicious, fun and energetic vibe in entire place on a dark, rainy night. will go again."

  • "This was our second time at the Admiral and it did not disappoint. I do not have a total idea of what is in the PEI Mussels sauce (could it be Pabst Blue Ribbon beer) but they are worth it alone. The staff is super friendly and everything we had was wonderful! We will definately be back."

  • "As we made plans to visit Asheville, friends told us to put the Admiral on our "Must Visit" list. Glad we did! We aren't foodies -- just like good food and made the most of it: Oysters on the half, mussels and escargot carbonara appetizers, with seared scallops entree which we split. And don't forget the manhattans!"

  • "We love this place and went on Good Friday. Everyone at the table had the ribeye steak. 2 ordered their steak medium and we ordered ours medium well. The 2 who ordered medium got what the wanted but those of us that ordered medium well got bloody rare steaks. This happens every time we go there. We only ate around the edges and then took it home to cook it the way we ordered. Would have sent them back to be re cooked but the place was busy and we had already waited quite a while. Was disappointed that one of their signature cocktails, "Dark and Stormy" was unavailable due to they were out of ginger ale. Kind of poor planning since it was a holiday. This is a great place but it's got its problems. "

  • "We returned to the Admiral to celebrate an anniversary and were not disappointed. The food was very good and the service very welcoming. There are some people who would pass by this restaurant because of its location and external appearance; if they do, they are missing the real deal for a great dining experience. This restaurant is classic Asheville: not pretentious, very professional. If you are looking for a classic fine dining experience, you might be put off by the ambiance, but we really appreciate how the core of this restaurant really delivers for the patrons. Highly recommended. "

  • "We love the lack of pretention, the funky interior, and the always outstanding food! And the bartender makes an incredible caipirinha!"

  • "Each plate was masterfully balanced, to call it decadent would be an understatement. Service was sweet, thoughtful, and subdued."

  • "One meal out of the four was good. Instead of the dining delight we anticipated, overall the meals were a disappointment. Two ordered the same thing and both agreed they were ok at best, didn't like the two accompanying sauces at all. Mine had an awful green foam but the scallops were ok, no flavor experience though. "

  • "I"m a foodie...but not a food snob. I love restaurants with original menus who focus on local food and have a down to earth staff. It's a harder bill to fit than most realize...but The Admiral hit every nail on the head! A great, diverse menu featuring local products, a knowledgeable, friendly and attentive staff (without being snobbish or overbearing), & the best meal we've had in our over 2 years in AVL. Great interior...dive-y without the yuck, cool without the angst & easy going. We went for date night but it would be wonderful for dinner w/ friends, too. In a very 'cool' part of town that I sometimes feel a little too unhip to fit in...but not the case at The Admiral. AND its not uber expensive. GO. You will not regret it!"

  • "The Admiral went from being one of our favorite restaurants to a miserable dining experience. We invited two guests, one from out-of-town and a local who always adored The Admiral. Our "treat" proved to be an embarrassment. The food was well below par (e.g., the PEI mussels--usually one of the best things on the menu). Service was abominably slow; a cheese plate, e.g., took more than an hour to arrive, and it was nowhere near your standards. Nathan, the manager, tried his best after we complained, but he seemed powerless to do much of anything to compensate us. He did comp us for a dessert, but even that was disappointing; I asked him for a credit or a gift certificate, but he wasn't an owner and said he didn't have the power to do so."

  • "I was visiting Asheville and I'm so glad someone directed us to the Admiral because of all the restaurants in Asheville. Delicious food. Love that the menu has small plate options. Service is the most attentive."

  • "I always love the Admiral, and try to take all my visitors here. The food is fun and fresh and inventive, and that's what I like about it. Some friends showed up unexpectedly, and eased right in to our table, our conversation and the flow with our server. I will always, always come back to my fave neighborhood joint."

  • "outstanding food and service beef and duck tender and tasty, great arugula salad, stuffed dates a nice contrast of flavors. My guests were impressed and want to come back."

  • "Tried The Admiral last year for my birthday and loved it. This time, the food was just pretty good with the notable exception of the Mussels which were fantastic. There was also a small lobster risotto served with the scallops which could stand as a fabulous dish on it's own. Flank steak was tasty but my husband only ordered it because they were already out of the Duck Confit . I tasted his Miso soup starter which was only ok but a huge disappointment after last year's out of this world carrot soup. Our server was lovely and helped pick a very nice wine after the one I wanted only came in half bottles. Same as last year, the dessert list was inventive but I was looking for something droolingly good and it wasn't there. Almost great."

  • "I have not eaten at the restaurant four times. The food is the best that Asheville has to offer. The arugula salad and Ragu Bolognese are a must!"

  • "The Admiral never ceases to amaze me. We went for dinner with another couple. We shared two appetizers and each had a small plate. We all thoroughly enjoyed our meals. We then shared a couple of desserts and asked ourselves why we don't come here more often."

  • "This is a special place, but don't dress up (unless u want to) Love the ambience and the varied selection of apps, small plates, and entrees - never get dessert - but they sound delicious & so creative - i will next time!"

  • "This place is a bit tricky to find if you don't know what you are looking for, but it is AMAZING and worth the search! Beef Tartare was incredible... really enjoyed the variety of oysters. YUM."
    Dined on 4/3/2014
  • "The variety of choices will satisfy any palate. The preparation and presentation are unique and well-balanced. If you plan well, and pace your meal, you should top it off with the "milk and cereal" dessert ... trust me, worth it, and just the perfect ending."

  • "While we agree with other reviews that the outside is a bit intimidating, once inside you feel that you will have a great meal! They did not let us down! While service was a tad bit slow at times the drinks were amazing, food was so different than most other places. And wine selections was greeat!! I had the skirt steak and substituted tater tots for collards without an issue. The steak was cooked perfectly as we're the sides of kale and collards. The perfect dish accompanied by a great Tempranillo wine. Would definitely visit again when in Asheville."

  • "I met up with one of my friends in Asheville for a weekend and I had heard about this place so I made a reservation a week beforehand. We went on a Friday night around 9pm and found a really cute almost dive bar vibe. I mean that in the best way possible, but it was unexpected after looking at the menu. Now the food was amazing, we ended up getting 4 small plates, which was a bit much, the small plates were larger than expected. We got the duck leg, mussels, tartare, and pork belly and they were all excellent. All of the dishes had amazing flavors and our Dark and Stormy's were nice and gingery too! I definitely recommend this place just make a reservation and order less food than you normally would."

  • "Interesting and good food, as usual. The small plates allows the diner to try many different items, much like tapas. Staff is extremely friendly. It's a small restaurant and, helping each other out on almost everything, they provide the atmosphere of a family. Much friendlier and conscientious than those in, e.g., Posana Cafe."

  • "The setting in this restaurant is very casual, the food is anything but. The only way to do it right is to order several dishes from the menu and share with your companion. The dishes are the perfect size for sharing with a date, and are some of the best flavor combinations I have experienced. The staff is very attentive and the service is well thought out. The servers team up and make the evening flawlessly flow. If you're looking for a place for an intimate night or just a night out with friends, this is the place for any occasion. MAKE A RESERVATION!!"

  • "I live in the neighborhood and frequent the Admiral quite often. I love the cozy feel of the place and how they took a funky looking building and created this magical little space with the most delicious, thoughtfully prepared food. The staff is attentive, warm and professional. It is one of the best examples of extraordinary Asheville cuisine in a unique setting - thankfully right in my neighborhood!"

  • "Stuffed dates were a perfect balance of sweet and savory. meat (duck and chicken) and fish (sea bass) cooked to perfection with interesting sauces and a nice mix of vegetables and salads. Enough food to enjoy without feeling stuffed. We were also able to try several small plates and share them. Service continues to be friendly and attentive. Food is interesting and imaginative as well as beautifully presented. I look forward to returning to what is a favorite place to eat. We aim to eat early and usually find a table that way."

  • "We had a lovely meal. The staff was patient and informative. The food was an unusual and delicious taste experience. The place is a little pricier than we could do outside of a special personal holiday. I highly recommend booking ahead! They left a sweet message on our table wishing us many more happy anniversaries... 5 stars."

  • "Our reservation was for Saturday night at 8:00 pm. Although we had to make the reservation quite a while in advance, it was worth waiting for. The dinner was terrific- I had scallops and two people had the Striped Bass- both dishes were divine. Then, as I hoped, the tables were removed and the music started. My only disappointment was that the music was not at all danceable! It seemed like they were playing the B side of some strange albums. There was a nice crowd, but only two people were dancing. We listened for a while and then decided the music wasn't going to get any better and left. But overall a great experience. I would go back on a Saturday night and hope for better music."

  • "We always have a wonderful dinner at the Admiral. We like the atmosphere , a little unusual, but interesting. Attentive service, but not hovering is good, and of course the most important thing is delicious food. There is usually an item on the menu that requires explaination of ingredients, and is tempting. The only complaint I have is the difficulity of finding parking. It is bad!"

  • "The best and most inventive cuisine I've had in the United States bar none. The atmosphere was very relaxing and I love the fact that it lacks the constraints of convention that normally associates fine dining cuisine. Extremely fair priced for the quality with generous portions. Really can't say enough good things about The Admiral, legendary food you don't want to miss."
