  • "Wow. Finally Nashville is a restaurant town I can be proud of! Not only is the food the best in town but the big surprise was the wine list. Amazing selection of great stuff that you just can't get anywhere else. Admittedly, I had never heard of some of it, but the waiter brought over the sommelier( that's right!) and he suggested the perfect pair without making me feel like an idiot. Had an Oregon white to start and a bottle of Tannat (seriously!) with the tri-tip. I don't ever eat much tri-tip but after the 404 I am a big fan. We had a crudo (raw fish with pickled strawberries!) to start. UNBELIEVABLE! I have had some great meals in Nashville but this is my new fave! Keep it up guys!"

  • "Very diverse ingredient list (pea tendrils, nettles, ramp, saba, etc.) with excellent execution. I had to google "polpettine, brebis and hakurei" among others to see what I would be eating. The Cioppino was "mild" (I prefer more garlic, fennel and red pepper). The Tri-tip cooked perfectly med-rare but I could not "taste" the 70 day dry ageing (tho the ramp risoptto side dish was balanced and creamy). The wine list was diverse and well chosen but I would stick to the cocktails here because of the quality of their concoctions."

  • "Great experience from the time we walked thru the door. Small, but very comfortable dining space with dinner service at the bar (we ended up eating at the bar instead of our table as the noise level can be a bit overwhelming from other tables). Knowledgeable, friendly, attentive staff to compliment the wonderfully fresh food."

  • "My four friends and I loved our meals at the 404 Kitchen. The food and waitress were outstanding. Our waitress found on oaky Chardonnay that was not on the menu has a bottle option. She chilled it and ensured a second bottle was chilling "just in case." The heirloom tomato tart and cheese plate appetizers are great. I highly recommend those and the swordfish entree."

  • "My only (tiny) complaint is that the setting sun blinded me through the windows for a little while, but the food and service more than compensated. I would gladly recommend 404 Kitchen to the most demanding foodie--everything I had was excellent."

  • "Nashville is fortunate to have such a star addition to the restaurant options. The chef must be a cracker-jack, because the food is delightfully gourmet without being fussy. Our fish and summer vegetables were beautifully prepared, the sauces so natural. The wine list is superb, possibly because the owner/manager is a former sommelier of first rate quality and affability. We are going back soon."

  • "Worth the wait to get a reservation at this tiny gem. Nice bar menu, great service by a knowledgable server, well-planned menu. Our table had rabbit, chicken, tile and swordfish. All wonderful, fresh, bright flavors. House made mozzarella app and tomato tart were fabulous. Can't wait to return."

  • "Menu read really well and the look and feel of the restaurant were great but when the food arrived at our table we were completely underwhelmed by the executed dishes. The crudo was drenched in a sauce (gruner?) that was so overwhelming and pungent it could have been any protein underneath and we wouldn't have noticed it. Another shocking complete miss was the farm fresh poached egg, all of the singular elements sound great but what is delivered is a bunch of asparagus and egg sitting in a bowl of oil. Great tasting oil but an entire bowl of it was completely unnecessary. Anyways the one really Great bright spot was service, our server was attentive friendly and very knowledgable. My Suggestion is the kitchen learns some balance"

  • "My parents live in the Gulch so we decided to try The 404 Kitchen and it did not disappoint. Delicious food, great staff and well worth the wait for a table. My mom is very picky and she loved it so it's gotta be good, right? Def give this place a try, I doubt you'll be disappointed."

  • "I was eager to try the 404 after securing a 7:30 reservation with about 4 wks lead time. The 404 was easy to find in the Gulch (just across from Urban Outfitters), valet was convenient, and we were seated right away. I heard the restaurant was small, and it was as was our table; I would recommend for 2-4 people rather than a larger party. We started w/ the tomato galette which was ok; presentation was beautiful, but the ricotta filled pastry was lacking. For entrees we tried the peach/pork ragout and tri-tip with a side of cornbread, and the skillet cookie for dessert (yum). All were delicious. Overall a great experience w/ GREAT service; would def go back. If only 2 of you, might be able to walk in and sit at the bar w/o a reservation."

  • "Nashville has too many trendy and heavy food establishments. 404 is a lovely combination of energetic, and intriguing creations with an eye to clean and clear flavors and presentations. We felt like we were in California with a nod to the south. Keep up the good work: do not get too elaborate, too trendy, or too southern!"

  • "Ever since 404 opened, my girlfriend and I just did not consider any other restaurant in the Gulch. Currently, 404 stands as the 2nd best restaurant in Nashville behind Cat Bird. It's better than Watermark, Sambuca, Husk, you name it. There's no comparison. Their menu changes everyday, but everything on it is a winner. Their tri tip and chicken breast are my 2 favorites."

  • "This may very well be the best meal in Nasville. It is without any question in the top 5. I hesitate to say more for fear that it will get too poplar to get a reservation."

  • "I read about the 404 Kitchen while researching new Nashville restaurants. The menu, service and atmosphere did not disappoint. I had the Chioppino and it was wonderful. We also split the banana and peanut butter dessert."

  • "404 Kitchen is tiny. There are supposedly 40 seats inside, but the room feels smaller. Our server was excellent; never there when we didn't need him, but always close by when we did. We opted for a 2 course dinner (starter + mains) with one drink for each course. The two mixed drinks I had were slightly above average, but not excellent. Pricing was pretty high given quality. My wife enjoyed an interesting red wine and a local beer, both of which were better than average and also slightly expensive. First course was a cheese plate, which was above average. Mains were both excellent. The peach pork ragout is a top 5 Nashville meal for me. In the end, the main quality more than offset the nature of the first course. Will surely try again."

  • "I'm a New Yorker with a great passion for fine (fortunately or not, haha) and have tried many of the top restaurants and clearly New York City isn't lacking great restaurants. 404 however ranks in among the top restaurant in its category at a totally reasonable price. This has been my second time at 404 kitchen and the food and spice combination is simply divine. Our waitress, which was the same one who waited on us last time, has superb knowledge and her wine suggestion for each course couldn't have been better! I will certainly be back and cannot wait for my next meal there! Great job!!"

  • "This was my wife and I's first visit to 404, and what a delightful find. The menu had so many great choices, with many special ingredients - nothing routine. The service was very friendly and helpful - which was great, because so many of the ingredients were new to us. Everything was prepared perfectly. The wine and cocktail offerings were extensive, and very good."

  • "After being interrupted by our server for the third time in the first 5 minutes of our visit I abandoned any attempt at conversation with my date. We were here to eat! And apparently very fast! I accepted this challenge and wolfed down a three course meal in 25 minutes. Finding myself on the curb again in the blink of an eye. I crossed the street for a relaxing drink and dessert. The food was excellent. I think."

  • "Small and quaint - don't plan to carry on private chats. Staff was expertly trained to know when to check in..they added to the experience. Appetizer (Crudo) was refreshing...salty, but refreshing. Entree Food was perfectly prepared with exceptional side items. No need for other sides that they offer..enough food on the entree offering. Breads and desserts were AMAZING (thank you Sam Tucker)!! "

  • "I highly recommend 404 Kitchen for its great food (the Glendale Farms chicken was outstanding), and for a nice collection of international whiskies including a couple decent Japanese whiskies. Foodies must try! Perhaps it was because we went early (i.e. before sunset), but I thought the ambience was a bit dull, as though we were sitting in a casual almost-fast-food kind of place instead of a great restaurant. It's a very small converted space that looks a lot like whatever hole it used to be, now painted black and with some nice tables and a nice-looking bar, but it has some ways to go before it makes you feel like you're out on a classy dinner date."

  • "Thoroughly enjoyed our dinner at 404. The staff was very welcoming and friendly and our waitress happily explained all the dishes. Started with a really tasty roasted tomato ricotta galette that my husband and I shared. I ordered the mahi over Carolina rice, peas, collards and ham broth--cooked perfectly and so delicious. The skillet cornbread was super good to soak up that ham broth too. My husband had the beef tri-tip was flavorful and hearty. Great little-and I mean little--restaurant. Loved it and look forward to returning."

  • "We enjoyed this meal more than any that we have had in Nashville lately. Everything from starters to desert was exceptional. The service was top notch. As others have written, this place is small. Do not go here for a quiet romantic dinner. Go with the expectation of having a quiet conversation about the great meal with your significant other after you leave. My single complaint is with their wine list. Very overpriced, although they offer several good options by the glass that are reasonably priced."

  • "Everything on the menu sounds delicious but the food was only good, not great. Not on the same level as City House and Rolf and Daughter. More like the same level as Josephine. Which is good, but not award winning. "

  • "It took two months for my sisters and I to get a reservation but it was worth it. The bartender was wonderful and don't pass on the Pig Plate. The server was just okay, we would have had dessert too, but we waited so long for him to come to the table we just skipped it and went to Sweet Ce Ce's. However, we will be back."

  • "This small, intimate place is great for couples and small groups that want to break away from large, loud venues. So in that regard it is a welcome oasis for a space where you can enjoy great food and have a conversation without screaming. The food was excellent. It was creative, inventive and showcased many cooking styles. Our group ordered a fish, beef and vegetarian dish. The vegetarian dish was negotiated between our guest and the chef because there was none on the menu. We were thrilled with all our selections. We are happy to add this restaurant to the growing list of new choices on the Nashville food scene."

  • "Best meal we've had in Nashville in 15 years. Very sophisticated, yet hip and informal. Extremely articulate and knowledgeable waitress. Would qualify as a cool spot in New York or Paris."
    Dined on 5/13/2014
  • "The food and service are both very good. Unfortunately the setting is pretty bad. Seating on the inside is the restaurant is VERY tight and it is quite loud... we chose to sit outside. It wasn't raining but they had the plastic rain flaps down which turned the outdoor seating area into a hot box and eliminated most street noise. The combination of tables being on top of each other and absolutely no background sound (music would have helped) made the outdoor seating area uncomfortable. Everything anyone said was easily heard and as a result conversations were whispered at each table. The other unfortunate addition to the ambiance was the faint smell of a nearby dumpster."

  • "We loved The 404! We had the pimento app, swordfish, rabbit and the MOST DELICIOUS peanut butter banana marshmallow dessert ever - and we would order it all again in a heartbeat. I highly recommend The 404!"

  • "We had a fabulous meal, great wine and the Best Single Malt Whisky from Texas. A perfect evening. Chef Matt Bolus has created a perfect little gem of a restaurant!"

  • "Having heard so much we were disappointed. Had to sit outside under heater because tables inside all filled despite reservation. Food mixed. Cioppino nothing to commend as negligible fish and too strong flavor. Pork ragout with cheese flavor much too rich after two mouthfuls. Overall seems they try too hard on creating dishes that could be simpler and better. "

  • "We had an odd expericence and unremarkable meal at 404. Seems like concept over quality. We were seated and 10 seconds later the server came up and asked us if we had any questions. No welcome, no introduction, no time to even look at the menu; she's just immediately asking if we had questions. She had on a denim apron though; I guess that makes it a southern restaurant. The wine list was sparse, and the menu was as well. We orderded cornbread since the server made a big deal about how its made to order. Turns out, its just plain old corn bread served in a small skillet with tasteless "special" butter on the side. Our entrees (Cioppino and Tri-tip) were also lacking in flavor - below chain restaurant quality. We won't be back."

  • "We remembered hearing about 404 Kitchen winning some prestigious and wanted to try it out. We had the swordfish and it definitely met our high expectations. The wine the server suggested complimented the meal very nicely. We also tried the carrot cake. It was unlike any carrot cake we had ever had but it was delicious. One of the best meals that we have had had a restaurant in a while. "

  • "We has a wonderful meal here. Short wait for our table so we went to the bar. Fabulous selection if drinks and friendly people. Our table was in the middle if all the action which I loved. Grilled asparagus for appetizer and re risotto which was to die for....I shall return."

  • "We sat down with great bar drinks, followed by a great wine selection recommended by the sommier. Our dinner started with two apps, I learned a lesson don't order fish on Wednesday since most restaurants in the middle of the country don't get daily fish deliveries our fish dish tasted old. However the cheese app made up for it and it was delicious. We followed those two dishes with the pate (wonderful) and the pasta dish with a fresh soft egg that was done perfectly. Our entrees were accompanied wonderful selections of wine that went perfectly. That's where it ended, the dessert selection was very lacking I'm guessing they don't have a pastry chef. We chose not to have the desserts and left still craving something sweet. Recommended. "
