A word from Thally
Simple, Fresh, and Flavorful…are the three words that best describe all of Thally’s Modern American cuisine. Chef Ron Tanaka's menu items will change in accordance to what ingredients are perfectly in season at the time. You’re sure to find the freshest fish, savory meat, at least one robust vegetarian dish, unique salads and appetizers, and delectable soup. We also serve a rotating list of wines and craft beers, custom cocktails, house made sodas, and unique spirits in a comfortable 70 seat restaurant, which includes a 14 seat bar.

Our name pays tribute to our Shaw neighborhood as well as our families: “Thally” refers to the Tally-Ho Stables (built in 1883) located in Naylor Court directly behind our restaurant, as well as to Thalia, the daughter of General Manager & Co Owner Sherman Outhuok. (Thally is pronounced without saying the “h”, as in Tally-Ho.)

This place is fantastic. Been half a dozen times and haven't had a bad meal yet! Interesting dishes and good for varied tastes. Friendly staff. If you like bourbon, the Rosemary Bulleit is a must have. Nice bar to hang out at if you get there early. They'll also serve you dinner at the bar which is nice. Owner is the host; nice guy and likes to meet his guests.

Casual and relaxed atmosphere that's great for meeting friends or a date (but not too casual for a business dinner). The food is of a very high standard. Ingredients are good quality and are presented creatively and the menu changes seasonally. The wine list similarly changes on a roughly 6 week basis. Its not long but doesn't have to be as it always represents an interesting selection of wines, hand picked by the owner. They also have a great selection of whiskies as well as ciders and meads (and are really worth a few experiements guided by the owner). The servers have a really incredible knowledge of what they are serving and the owner/manager is always on hand to back them up with his depth of knowledge on the wines and particularly the ciders and meads. Engage him in conversation and you can see that he has a passion about what he is serving and it shows in the rest of the staff too. There are plenty of restaurants in town serving good food, or with a good selection of wines etc. but what makes the difference in my opinion is the service. Here, its friendly, knowledgable and focused on giving the diner a true dining experience where you can try new things. My top tip is to try the ciders or meads as an alternative to wine with dinner or aftewards with some cheese or dessert. They truly are something different and the owner can give you a great education on them too. (even better, they are running a discount on them through the end of the year - I think it was 20%? but after sharing a bottle of wine and a couple of ciders, I couldn't quite remember...........)

We were a bit skeptical given we had only read online reviews before booking this place for our anniversary dinner, when we usually are pretty picky snobs when it comes to word-of-mouth recommendations. We were not disappointed! They greeted us with complimentary champagne, and the service, food, and drink were all amazing. I think there are some items on the menu which can still use improvement, but for a place that's relatively new, and in an area of town desperately in need of hip new restaurants, this one checks all the boxes!

We took some friends from out of town to dine at Thally on Saturday night. To our amazement, Sherman (the owner) had remembered my visit almost a year ago, and had a complimentary treat on the table when we arrived. He is delightful and attentive to every detail going on in the restaurant. The meal was superb, including (in my case) the "noodle salad" and the lamb roulade. The fish dishes were wonderful as well. We will definitely be loyal customers going forward!

Scallops and fresh catch were both outstanding. Not overly fussy, just delicious flavors. The wine list was a bit underwhelming, nothing really jumped out at us, which is unusual. The host was incredibly gracious and service was attentive. I look forward to many more meals at Thally!

Thally exceeded my expectations. Our reservation was for 7:15 and when Thally could not seat us at right at that time, they provided free Cava while we waited. I had a red wine poached pear bibb lettuce salad with burrata and crispy proscuitto which was excellent. My friend had the Autumn soup (with asian flavors) which she also deemed excellent. The tagliatelle for main course was absolutely wonderful... fresh broccoli rabe, homemade pasta. This really hit the spot. And the chocolate cake for dessert - with marshmellow anglaise and spiced candied pecans was a great end to a great meal. If anything could be improved, it would be the slowish service and the noise level. But the staff was incredibly friendly. I would return in a heartbeat!

8th visit to this restaurant and it just gets better. The owner is passionate about good food and drink. The wines rotate out regularly so there is always something new to try (and a good mix of unusual & typical wines). Also have an extensive list of ciders and meads - which is something fun to try for a change of pace, or have with some cheese after dinner. And the staff are very knowledgable about what they are serving. Food is very good too - 'creative American'. Again, menu items change with the seasons. There's attention to detail here! Atmosphere is relaxed but sophisticated. And prices are about 3/4 of what you pay at comprable restaurants such as Birch & Barley. Only mystery is why its never fully booked - but I'm not complaining!!

The duck and lamb dishes were delicious and we loved the intimate feel of the restaurant. It's perfect for a date night. Our only gripe is that we had reservations and showed up ten minutes late. Instead of telling us the restaurant had given up our reservation, the host kept telling us that it would only be a few more minutes until we would be seated. Unfortunately, "a few minutes" turned into at least 45 minutes. The moral of the story...don't show up late for a reservation. The host did apologize and gave us a free appetizer.

Ours was a seriously wonderful experience. All of our dishes were cooked to perfection. I admit to being very picky about duck preparations, and mine was flawless, as were the scallops and the pasta. I've read the comments about the noise level, but we didn't have an issue - maybe because it was early, or that it was Tuesday, or maybe management has responded to diners' concerns.

The food and service were outstanding as always--the reason I keep going back--but the music volume on Saturday evening 10/4/2014 was more suited to a hipster bar than a fine dining restaurant. Whoever amped up the volume since my last visit needs to turn it back down, way down. DC has enough restaurants where one cannot hold a conversation. Don't join that list! Thally's used to be one of the few places to dine and converse. Please don't change that.

Our server Pam was our favorite to date, she was very knowledgeable and friendly and helped steer us to the best choices for our taste (which is refreshing versus trying to get us to pick the most expensive option across the board). Since the night it opened, Tally just gets better. The base---not too noisy sets the stage. Creative drinks or interesting wines and ciders also are good. Freshly baked rolls Still hot! Yum. Not a dud on the menu. Love the unusual curried celery root "noodle" salad. Had a great fish special. The chocolate cake will remind you of the 60s but somehow better. Better chocolate used, better attention to nuance. A bowl of the gelato with the cherries could satisfy me for a while. As long as the music is kept low so that you can actually talk, this continues to win and get better.

Went the first night. Liked it immediately. Slightly better than Table. Thally has continued to improve, innovate and still stay pleasant and welcoming. Table, on the other hand is spotty, snotty, and smoky (the updraft really needed fixing the last 2 times I was there). This last meal (number 15?) again raised the bar. The meats were perfectly prepared, the fish was fresh and sauced with care, and all of the veggies were prepared to bring out the best of the tastes. Great mixed drinks. Just better and better.

8pm reservation at Thally with a couple of friends on Saturday night. Cute place - great ambiance. Not super crowded except during the 8:30-9:30 window. We suspected they might have been short staffed as we waited almost 30 minutes to order our food (couldn't make eye contact with our server who was running around). Ordered seafood special (trout) and it was one of the better fish entrees I've had in recent memory - perfectly cooked with unexpected yet complementary flavors.

We wanted to take advantage of Restaurant Week and found Thally on Open Table. Based on other experiences with RW, we didn't have high hopes. BUT, this place was terrific. The entire menu was available which is practically unheard of in DC. We started w/ the carnitas sopa and romaine salad - both were fresh and tasty with nice serving sizes for that gave just enough of a taste to satisfy and just enough to make us want more. For entrees, we had the red snapper (fish of the day) and the duck. Both full of flavor and prepared perfectly. Chocolate cake for dessert and a complimentary taste of the grapefruit chello. Wonderful service, too. All in all a great experience - we can't wait to go back.

First time at the restaurant via restaurant week. They exceeded expectations. The food was simply terrific. The must get is their butternut squash & celery "noodles" salad. Creative and great curry flavor. The restaurant excelled in using day to day ingredients and bringing a nice twist to it. The drinks (beer and honey wine) were hard to find anywhere else. More importantly, the service was impeccable. One of the owners helped served us (we were a group of six). They were so attentive, they even wrote down the song that was playing because we liked it.

Four of us dined here during Restaurant Week. We were pleased to find a generous selection of menu options--most if not all of the regular items were available, albeit a few with a small upcharge. Everything we ordered met with raves, including the wonderful bargain wine recommended by our server. I especially loved the butternut squash "noodle" salad, tagliatelle, pork tenderloin, and roasted cauliflower. Each featured an attractive presentation and an interesting, unusual, but completely harmonious blend of flavors. The only reason I gave less than five stars overall was the noise level, which made conversation challenging at times. I suspect the tables farthest from the bar would be a little quieter.

Thally lived up to its many great reviews. Trendy, hot spot with a youngish and sophisticated vibe. Felt like a hip city venue. Menu nicely limited in that there seemed to be one or two of all the major food groups. Starter of whisky roast onion with bacon jam was sublime--oozing with flavor, truly unique. Homemade tagliatelle was delicate and delightful; the roasted oyster mushrooms were earthy and sauce enveloped the pasta without being overwhelming. Portions were well sized. Finishing the meal with Pitango gelato was a perfect ending. I'll return for brunch and dinner with family and friends. Get a reservation before it's too late!

Thally was amazing. My beau and I went for our 2-year anniversary. I actually booked the reservation on OpenTable. They had two candles lit for us as well as two glasses of wine on the table for us as well. I had the striped bass and he had the flanked steak....which was superb. Not to mention the drinks were fantastic.
