A word from Thally
Simple, Fresh, and Flavorful…are the three words that best describe all of Thally’s Modern American cuisine. Chef Ron Tanaka's menu items will change in accordance to what ingredients are perfectly in season at the time. You’re sure to find the freshest fish, savory meat, at least one robust vegetarian dish, unique salads and appetizers, and delectable soup. We also serve a rotating list of wines and craft beers, custom cocktails, house made sodas, and unique spirits in a comfortable 70 seat restaurant, which includes a 14 seat bar.

Our name pays tribute to our Shaw neighborhood as well as our families: “Thally” refers to the Tally-Ho Stables (built in 1883) located in Naylor Court directly behind our restaurant, as well as to Thalia, the daughter of General Manager & Co Owner Sherman Outhuok. (Thally is pronounced without saying the “h”, as in Tally-Ho.)

Since the night it opened, Tally just gets better. The base---not too noisy sets the stage. Creative drinks or interesting wines and ciders also are good. Freshly baked rolls Still hot! Yum. Not a dud on the menu. Love the unusual curried celery root "noodle" salad. Had a great fish special. The chocolate cake will remind you of the 60s but somehow better. Better chocolate used, better attention to nuance. A bowl of the gelato with the cherries could satisfy me for a while. As long as the music is kept low so that you can actually talk, this continues to win and get better.

Went the first night. Liked it immediately. Slightly better than Table. Thally has continued to improve, innovate and still stay pleasant and welcoming. Table, on the other hand is spotty, snotty, and smoky (the updraft really needed fixing the last 2 times I was there). This last meal (number 15?) again raised the bar. The meats were perfectly prepared, the fish was fresh and sauced with care, and all of the veggies were prepared to bring out the best of the tastes. Great mixed drinks. Just better and better.

8pm reservation at Thally with a couple of friends on Saturday night. Cute place - great ambiance. Not super crowded except during the 8:30-9:30 window. We suspected they might have been short staffed as we waited almost 30 minutes to order our food (couldn't make eye contact with our server who was running around). Ordered seafood special (trout) and it was one of the better fish entrees I've had in recent memory - perfectly cooked with unexpected yet complementary flavors.

We wanted to take advantage of Restaurant Week and found Thally on Open Table. Based on other experiences with RW, we didn't have high hopes. BUT, this place was terrific. The entire menu was available which is practically unheard of in DC. We started w/ the carnitas sopa and romaine salad - both were fresh and tasty with nice serving sizes for that gave just enough of a taste to satisfy and just enough to make us want more. For entrees, we had the red snapper (fish of the day) and the duck. Both full of flavor and prepared perfectly. Chocolate cake for dessert and a complimentary taste of the grapefruit chello. Wonderful service, too. All in all a great experience - we can't wait to go back.

First time at the restaurant via restaurant week. They exceeded expectations. The food was simply terrific. The must get is their butternut squash & celery "noodles" salad. Creative and great curry flavor. The restaurant excelled in using day to day ingredients and bringing a nice twist to it. The drinks (beer and honey wine) were hard to find anywhere else. More importantly, the service was impeccable. One of the owners helped served us (we were a group of six). They were so attentive, they even wrote down the song that was playing because we liked it.

Four of us dined here during Restaurant Week. We were pleased to find a generous selection of menu options--most if not all of the regular items were available, albeit a few with a small upcharge. Everything we ordered met with raves, including the wonderful bargain wine recommended by our server. I especially loved the butternut squash "noodle" salad, tagliatelle, pork tenderloin, and roasted cauliflower. Each featured an attractive presentation and an interesting, unusual, but completely harmonious blend of flavors. The only reason I gave less than five stars overall was the noise level, which made conversation challenging at times. I suspect the tables farthest from the bar would be a little quieter.

A group of us went here because it was included in DC Restaurant week. Upon entering, we all feel in love with the industrial look and feel of the quaint restaurant. The service was amazing, and the servers were all knowledgeable of the menu and wine pairings. The 3 course meal was amazing, the chef is brilliant. We arrive soon after they opened, and it was not long before the restaurant was bustling. A great place to dine! Also make a reservation before going.

Thally lived up to its many great reviews. Trendy, hot spot with a youngish and sophisticated vibe. Felt like a hip city venue. Menu nicely limited in that there seemed to be one or two of all the major food groups. Starter of whisky roast onion with bacon jam was sublime--oozing with flavor, truly unique. Homemade tagliatelle was delicate and delightful; the roasted oyster mushrooms were earthy and sauce enveloped the pasta without being overwhelming. Portions were well sized. Finishing the meal with Pitango gelato was a perfect ending. I'll return for brunch and dinner with family and friends. Get a reservation before it's too late!

Thally was amazing. My beau and I went for our 2-year anniversary. I actually booked the reservation on OpenTable. They had two candles lit for us as well as two glasses of wine on the table for us as well. I had the striped bass and he had the flanked steak....which was superb. Not to mention the drinks were fantastic.

Happy hour here is a deal and a half, but for dinner Thally really shines. Excellent service, creative food (Bibb, burrata and crispy prosciutto!) and a warm ambiance combine to make this a great experience. The wine list is varied and begins at reasonable prices for very drinkable options.

It was a good friend and my first dinner at Thally. The space is good and tables are relatively private. The standout is the menu. I had the butternut squash and celery root "noodle" salad ($9) and the grilled chicken breast with dandelion-sunflower pesto, braised radicchio and white bean-carrot ragout ($21). The meal was outstanding. They had very reasonably priced bottles of wines starting at $32, but wine by the glass was relatively expensive (starting at $9 to $14 for a 5 ounce glass), so the bottle (with 25 ounces) is a much better deal. The restaurant was busy but not impossibly noisy. The service was good but relatively slow. Thaylly is a keeper and I will be back. We highly recommend.

I expected a great neighborhood joint when we came to Thally, and while the ambiance and bar fits that bill, the overall experience did not. The food just is not that great for the prices they are charging. $11 for 3 shrimp seems excessive. $10 for three teaspoons of ice cream with a scant pour of liquor over it seems excessive. And we left feeling like chumps because we had a similar meal at Le Diplomat a few days earlier that was a far better value and so very much better in terms of food quality. I wanted to really embrace this place, but I won't go back. I feel duped by the Washington Post review.

Everyone's food was great except for one dish, the flank steak, which arrived kind of unpleasantly charred and a bit over cooked (the snow peas that came with the steak - amazing). The rest of our table ordered the tagliatelle, duck, and fresh catch - all were excellent. The cocktails were great, although there was about a 20 minute wait for them, which seemed like a lot. The service is fine, we had a reservation (they called to confirm 1 hour before we got there), and they seemed kind of unprepared for us. There were a couple of long waits, but everyone was very nice and the waits were not so long that we got hungry or cranky.

Generally, the food was quite good. My only complaint is that the flank steak I had on our second trip was a bit salty, but it was done to perfection. Best description of the restaurant that it is "a quiet neighborhood restaurant with very good food." Drinks, however, are a problem. Slow service is an issue. The whiskey sour I ordered the first night had a maraschino cherry that looked like it had been picked up from the floor. On the second night I ordered and gin and tonic. They said they prided themselves on their house-made tonic water, but it was too sweet for my taste. Tonic water should be bitter.

Really wanted to like this place because the interior is inviting, the service is really good and the cocktails are superb. But, it's true what reviewers have said on Yelp and this site that the portions are not equal to the price being paid. I ordered the White Chocolate Bread Pudding for desert and it was so small you could finish it in two bites.

They have a really good beer list, though I was in the mood for wine, but couldn't find one I liked. Have been for dinner before and was always pleased with the great food at very reasonable prices (honestly, its a place I'd be happy to take a date, a business client or, as in this case, a few 'foody friends'). Decided to try it for happy hour too this time. Good selection of wine and beer at a happy hour discount and a few 'elegant' bar snack options made it worthwhile. If its a busy, loud happy hour you're looking for, this is not it. But if you just want to 'chill' with a few friends after work, followed by a good dinner, this is the perfect place.
