A word from Thally
Simple, Fresh, and Flavorful… are the three words that best describe all of Thally’s Modern American cuisine. Chef Ron Tanaka's menu items will change in accordance to what ingredients are perfectly in season at the time. But you’re sure to find the freshest fish, savory meat, at least one robust vegetarian dish, unique salads and appetizers, and delectable soup. We also serve a rotating list of wines and craft beers, custom cocktails, house-made sodas, and unique spirits in a comfortable 70 seat restaurant which includes a 14 seat bar.

Our name pays tribute to our Shaw neighborhood as well as our families: “Thally” refers to the Tally-Ho Stables (built in 1883) located in Naylor Court directly behind our restaurant, as well as to Thalia, the daughter of General Manager & Co-Owner Sherman Outhuok. (Thally is pronounced without saying the “h”, as in Tally-Ho.)

Diner Reviews
  • "Came here for a girls night dinner/drinks and it was just ok. Bartender couldn't have seemed less interested in what he was doing and was rather unfriendly. Cocktails were good. Our server for dinner was pleasant and attentive. I had the cauliflower soup, which was good but not great. I then had the duck which was ok. The slaw-type salad that was served with it was very good. i don't think my friends were overly impressed with the food, either. Nothing was terrible or had to be sent back, but I've had much better meals at this price point at many places in DC. I don't see this place surviving on mediocre food and service in this competitive neighborhood."

  • "Cool spot and the cocktail was good, but the food was just ok, not great. We went there to try it out as a possible graduation dinner spot and have decided to go elsewhere. I got the rabbit and thought it was good, but the appetizer was so so and my wife's monkfish came out cold even though it was early and the kitchen could not have been busy yet. Nothing worse than cold fish."

  • "Both the food and drinks are delicious, with interesting and clean flavors, from a well-constructed menu. Portions though, even from the entree selections, are on the small side. Fun seating options, friendly staff, and upbeat music make this an easy-to-enjoy local gem."

  • "We went for our anniversary and had a very nice time. The manager and waiter congratulated us on our 29 year celebration and made it an event. Nice, small space, nice decor and relaxing atmosphere."

  • "Heard from a friend that Thally was worth checking out so we took the plunge and went on a Wednesday night. Our waitress seemed a tad disorganized but nothing that detracted from the experience. The housemade sodas are a definite must try; they don't offer the usual Coke, Sprite, etc. but instead spiced sodas made in-house. The food overall was delicious - my duck was a tad overdone (asked for medium, got closer to well) but the appetizers and my cheesecake were some of the best in my neighborhood."

  • "Food was bread and the staff friendly and helpful! This was a hidden gem that I wish much success! We found it featured in magazine at our hotel. Glad we made the drive to find it. We had the roasted onion cheese and bacon jam appetizer mentioned in the article which was delightful. The server paired it with a great white wine. For our main course we had the rabbit and dumplings which was exceptional! Again the server paired it with a wonderful red for me. And my daughter had the wild mushroom risotto with tuffles also very good. We shared. The rolls were wonderful served with creamed butter with basil. This was our best meal during our time in DC."

  • "Really good food, attentive but not overbearing service and quiet enough to have a conversation. What's not to like."

  • "i have now eaten at thally three times with groups of three, four and five and shared each others food. everything has been delicious. cooked to order. served hot. beautifully displayed. friendly, warm and professional service. really walnut tables. thew steak is "to die for" so is the bread pudding. good choice of beers and wines. Sherman (the owner or manager) is a delightful host."

  • "The food was delicious, but we waited almost 2 hours for our food and the server never once apologized for the delay."

  • "Live around the corner and went for date night with expectation that this was a neighborhood gem. However, the price point of items on the menu put the meal into an above average dining category and thus Thally did not live up to its dinner price point. Dinner for two with appetizer, main course, dessert, one drink each and tax and tip was approaching $150. The scallop appetizer was good but only 2 scallops and the crab appetizer was ordinary and lacked crab flavor. Our Delmonico steaks were tough, however the scallop potatoes and shredded snap peas were quite tasty. I imagine Thally has the potential to be a neighborhood go to spot, but we are not the type of diners that will spend a $125 to $150 for a convenient place to grab diner."

  • "From the excellent and interesting food to the decor to charming owner Sherman, Thally is a new favorite. I've been there twice in two weeks. The bar staff is fantastic and I love the house-made sodas. Try the Sibellini Honey cocktail and some Anthem cider, it's delicious. Also recommended are the steak and duck, the shrimp first bite and the very interesting squash-and-yogurt "salad." I can't wait to go back!"

  • "I love it when I find restaurants that take care of the service as well as the food. We were a party of 10, and due to a storm we couldn't make it on time. They were kind enough to wait for us half an hour after the kitchen was supposed to close. The food was great! We ate all the appetizers, my personal favorite was the shrimp, but there wasnt anything I didn't like. I had the red snapper and it was great too. I highly recommend it"

  • "I went with a friend to Thally this week, and was so pleasantly surprised. I had never heard of it (found it just from googling new DC restaurants) and everything about the meal was truly fantastic -- from the food (fit for foodies but not over the top) to the service (super friendly and relaxed) to the ambiance (vibrant, relaxed, but elegant), Thally immediately became a new favorite. I will definitely be back."

  • "This little gem is tucked away in a side street and it took me some time to find it. There is no big, glowing sign or hawker outside the door. It is a simple restaurant with an excellent environment and outstanding food. The owner is really nice, too."

  • "really like the atmosphere, and it's a great location. also welcome vitality returning to 9th street. table wasn't ready despite reservation. host was very gracious providing appetizers and sparkling wine at the bar while we waited, for close to forty five minutes. but once seated the service took a turn for the worse. the bartender waited on us and we really had to pester her to get her attention. overall it was a fine night, with good food and friends but repeatedly asking for flat wear and trying to get our server's attention proved a bit tiring. have been there before and had a great evening. i will give it another try. hey, everybody has an off night."

  • "I really wanted to like this place. I chose it for a friend's birthday after reading a great review from the WP and lots of great online reviews, but we found the food surprisingly ordinary and tasteless. The crab appetizer was bland, like something I would expect from a chain restaurant. The roasted onion was not nearly as good as the one at Jaleo's. We tasted no truffle in the truffle risotto and didn't like the texture of the rice. Same with the white chocolate bread pudding-- tasted no white chocolate and it was mushy. We did like the pear salad, the spicy shrimp wasn't spicy but the shrimp were plump, and the bacon roasted brussel sprouts were tasty--but nothing was extraordinary, and I expected much ore at this price point."

  • "This was our first visit to Thally, but it will not be our last. The food was excellent, the service great and the feel of the restaurant warm and inviting. Even though we went on Valentine's Day, we were not rushed, and there were no corny decorations or gimmicky specials. Our server, (Cassie) had very good recommendations on wine and food selections. Each dish was delicious, and prepared perfectly. Our appetizers (carnitas for one of us and cauliflower soup for the other) were just right for a snowy evening. The rabbit entree was amazing, with a crust that was perfectly crisp, and the fish was moist and seasoned well with great accompaniments."

  • "Had a great date here on a Sunday. Great ambiance, low noise level, very intimate. Service was on point, and every question was answered in depth. My date got the rabbit, and it was absolutely phenomenal. I ordered the Delmonico medium rare, but it came out medium. It wasn't overcooked to the point of sending it back and waiting for a new one, but it was slightly annoying for the level of service I was expecting. Overall, a great experience; I'll definitely be coming back."

  • "We were in town to visit our grandson and happened upon Thally, which is about a block away, when we wanted to take the family for a nice dinner. Small, friendly, extremely well run and easy to have a family conversation. Our little one is still too small for a high chair, but the staff offered several options when we mentioed his imminent arrival. The fact that the kids were late in coming, of course, didn't faze the staff and we enjoyed an excellent wine until they arrived with the bundle. Food was prepared excellently and not over-priced. Drinks were generous and the service was prompt and considerate. All in all a delightful evening."

  • "We enjoyed our evening at Thally. Good menu concepts; I particularly enjoyed the risotto. The Cabernet franc was memorable. Attentive and cheerful service and the owner is such a nice guy. This will be a go-to for us."

  • "My fiance and I went to Thally for his birthday dinner, never having been there before. The restaurant is lively and cool. He ordered the dark and cloudy, which was a little too sweet. The beers and wine we had were very good and there was a large selection to choose from. He had the shrimp small bite and I had the bib salad- we both loved them. We both got the pork T bone as an entree, and it was sooo good. We were a little disappointed when the dessert option we wanted was sold out. Overall, we had a lovely time. Great service, delicious food. We met the owner, and he was really nice and welcoming. We can't wait to go back, especially for the great happy hour deal."

  • "Once we finally got our food it was pretty good, but not enough to overcome the terrible service we had. We had a 8:30 reservation but didn't get our food until after 10:00."

  • "What a nice addition to Shaw. Great beers and interesting food. Good choices on the dinner menue and the beers were excellent. The service was a bit slow but we came early and maybe not all of the staff was at work yet. Very nice appetizer list and then followed by a new and interesting and tasty set of main items. All in all and very nice experience and we will return."

  • "I dined with a group of girlfriends for restaurant week and we were not disappointed. Thally offered the entire menu for choices and the menu was splendid! The place had a great vibe for Friday night, it was crowded but not overwhelming with noise. Extensive beer, wine, and cocktail list, definitely a hot spot for the neighborhood. Service was a little slow, and it took a bit for our entrees to come, but I will attribute that the the crowded from restaurant week. Overall a good experience."

  • "Thally is a great place - very delicious food, artistic presentation and ever-changing menu. Their happy hour ("social hour") has 1/2 half their bar menu (appetizers), $4 ciders and beers on tap and $2 off all wines. We arrived a little late and realized the happy hour specials were only available at the bar but the hostess was extremely friendly and say is right away. The bartender on the other hand - terrible. Had his back towards is (and about 6 people total at the bar), failed to offer us menus (and kept taking them away prematurely), failed to ask is what we'd like to order and failed to be hospitable in a small setting that Thally offers. In other words, your best bet is table service!"

  • "Good addition to the neighborhood. Food was good and the service was great. One of the people in my group had several food allergies and the waitress was very knowledgable and accommodating. She even allowed a substitution for dessert, even though it was Restaurant Week. The prices are a little high for me to become a regular but I will definitely be back, especially for happy hour."

  • "Food was above average, but for the price, there are fifteen other restaurants I'd rather visit."
    Dined on 1/15/2014
  • "I'm hoping our issues were due to Thally only being open a few months - but that's more likely to explain the slow service than the food. We appreciated the interesting twists, but the quality just wasn't up to par for the kind of restaurant this is trying to be."

  • "Glad we gave this place second and third tries after a lack-luster experience when it first opened. Our last dinner there was fantastic food, great wine, and the service was so much improved. Quickly becoming a neighborhood go-to. Now improve the cocktails and I'm sold!"

  • "We had a special dinner celebrating a friend's retirement. All of the drinks were special, the food was spectacular and the service just right. The new cauliflower soup is wonderful and the special duck confit appetizer was moist, tasty, and sharable. The sourdough rolls were great. Familiarity breeds content."

  • "Very, very good food, made with very fresh ingredients, compensated for an extremely long wait and some loud and obnoxious nearby diners (who, in ny event, were not the restaurant's fault, but we would have spent less time forced to listen to them if our food hadn't taken nearly an hour to start coming)."
