A word from Thally
Simple, Fresh, and Flavorful… are the three words that best describe all of Thally’s Modern American cuisine. Chef Ron Tanaka's menu items will change in accordance to what ingredients are perfectly in season at the time. But you’re sure to find the freshest fish, savory meat, at least one robust vegetarian dish, unique salads and appetizers, and delectable soup. We also serve a rotating list of wines and craft beers, custom cocktails, house-made sodas, and unique spirits in a comfortable 70 seat restaurant which includes a 14 seat bar.

Our name pays tribute to our Shaw neighborhood as well as our families: “Thally” refers to the Tally-Ho Stables (built in 1883) located in Naylor Court directly behind our restaurant, as well as to Thalia, the daughter of General Manager & Co-Owner Sherman Outhuok. (Thally is pronounced without saying the “h”, as in Tally-Ho.)

Diner Reviews
  • "The food was excellent, the decor welcoming and the vibe neighborhood casual in the best possible way. We look forward to returning early and often!"

  • "I expected a great neighborhood joint when we came to Thally, and while the ambiance and bar fits that bill, the overall experience did not. The food just is not that great for the prices they are charging. $11 for 3 shrimp seems excessive. $10 for three teaspoons of ice cream with a scant pour of liquor over it seems excessive. And we left feeling like chumps because we had a similar meal at Le Diplomat a few days earlier that was a far better value and so very much better in terms of food quality. I wanted to really embrace this place, but I won't go back. I feel duped by the Washington Post review."

  • "We enjoyed an early celebratory night out at Thally. The food was terrific and the pace relaxed. Staff was helpful and attentive until the place filled up when they were stretched thin."

  • "This small restaurant delivers BIG! The owners go out of their way to ensure that all patrons are taken care of. The food is phenomenal! This is a place to come to dine and relax.....not if you are in a hurry. Great wine selections that pair nicely with the food. Don't miss this!"

  • "Everyone's food was great except for one dish, the flank steak, which arrived kind of unpleasantly charred and a bit over cooked (the snow peas that came with the steak - amazing). The rest of our table ordered the tagliatelle, duck, and fresh catch - all were excellent. The cocktails were great, although there was about a 20 minute wait for them, which seemed like a lot. The service is fine, we had a reservation (they called to confirm 1 hour before we got there), and they seemed kind of unprepared for us. There were a couple of long waits, but everyone was very nice and the waits were not so long that we got hungry or cranky."

  • "we had a great celebration friday - great restaurant and definitely worthy of a special occasion"

  • "Thally is perfect for an informal night out with food with flavor and flair. The scallop appetizer, sea bass special and pasta were a cut above. Each showed imagination without being overwhelmed. We will go back!"

  • "This was my third time at Thally, my first since February. The food was great. Not fussy. Just really good. Everything. It was really good. I can't wait to go back."

  • "Good food, cool space but need more wait staff. Makes me reluctant to return."

  • "Generally, the food was quite good. My only complaint is that the flank steak I had on our second trip was a bit salty, but it was done to perfection. Best description of the restaurant that it is "a quiet neighborhood restaurant with very good food." Drinks, however, are a problem. Slow service is an issue. The whiskey sour I ordered the first night had a maraschino cherry that looked like it had been picked up from the floor. On the second night I ordered and gin and tonic. They said they prided themselves on their house-made tonic water, but it was too sweet for my taste. Tonic water should be bitter."

  • "Really wanted to like this place because the interior is inviting, the service is really good and the cocktails are superb. But, it's true what reviewers have said on Yelp and this site that the portions are not equal to the price being paid. I ordered the White Chocolate Bread Pudding for desert and it was so small you could finish it in two bites."

  • "Perfect place for a romantic dinner or dinner with friends. The owners and wait staff are very personable. The menu provides the right amount of choice being that it is seasonal. The side of Brussels sprouts are a must! Big cider list. Will definitely return!"

  • "2 friends and I had happy hour here & they have good specials: $4 beer, $2 off wine, and some small bites. They have a really good beer list, though I was in the mood for wine, but couldn't find one I liked. We did end up having dinner - catch of the day, which was really good, though the accompaniments were really salty; and pasta. This was my 2nd time there & I will definitely go back."

  • "We brought a fried from NYC who was visiting DC. We wanted to try a restaurant in Shaw. We were delightfully surprised how good this reataurant was. The food is suburb. The service and ambiance could not have been better. I will be back many times to come."

  • "but bland food and loud w/o being too crowded :-( bummer...."

  • "Have been for dinner before and was always pleased with the great food at very reasonable prices (honestly, its a place I'd be happy to take a date, a business client or, as in this case, a few 'foody friends'). Decided to try it for happy hour too this time. Good selection of wine and beer at a happy hour discount and a few 'elegant' bar snack options made it worthwhile. If its a busy, loud happy hour you're looking for, this is not it. But if you just want to 'chill' with a few friends after work, followed by a good dinner, this is the perfect place."

  • "Had to wait about 1/2 hr after reservation time. The place was busy and seemed understaffed. The food is good, but maybe not as good as they think it is. "

  • "In for the weekend from WV to visit our daughter in the new Mrkt at O St. apartments, just a block away. What a great find! I couldn't decide on an entree so opted for a couple of "First Bites", including rabbit andouille and seared scallops, both presented and prepared to perfection. My wife chose the catch of the day, grouper, and it was exquisite (she offered only one tiny bite). The whole staff is very attentive and caring. We shall return, and soon."

  • "My brother was visiting from SoCal, so wanted to take him somewhere special. Heard lots of great things about Thally. Stewart, the owner, greeted us upon arrival and was very friendly, but the good service lacked from there on. Our server never came over to greet us or take our drink order - I had to flag him down after waiting for 15 minutes. He took about 20 more minutes to take our food order, after I flagged him down. They ran out of the wine we were drinking after only 2 bottles, so we had to switch to another that wasn't as good. Our server also started to take away the dessert menus before we even had a chance to look or order. The food was OUTSTANDING, which was the saving grace! Hopefully next time we'll have better service."

  • "Wonderful spot, terrific bar, kindly service, if a bit slow, an eclectic menu carefully prepared but perhaps too clever--e.g., squash/celery "noodles" with lavender was a good idea that wasn't very tasty. i'd go again, but order something more down to earth, meaning, spices and flavorings the chef can handle."

  • "Food, service and ambience at Thally are outstanding! The first place you should stop if you're near the Mt. Vernon square metro. "

  • "A friend and I recently dined here for the first time and have been singing its praises ever since. Every item that we ordered was full of great flavor and delicious. We shared two First Bites and two Big Bites because it was all so good. We'll be coming back here and bringing friends with us for sure."

  • "This was my second time going and both times delivered. I took 4 friends here for a pre-wedding celebration for a friend. The menu was delicious and served everyone's needs. The drink list provided ample offers for the beer lovers, wine drinkers, and cocktail fans at the table. The menu was great and provided options for my vegetarian friends as well as the carnivores. The roasted whisky onion appetizer was life-changingly tasty. I had the pork tenderloin and absolutely cleaned my plate. Even the garnish was delicious. I also had bites of the duck and rabbit dishes and those did not disappoint-- other than the feeling of sadness that I couldn't eat all three for dinner. "

  • "This is our neighborhood go to restaurant. Menu changes seasonally, delicious food, great wines, very attentive service. "

  • "Really enjoyed Thally. The server was patient with us while we gabbed and took awhile to figure out what we wanted, but also very attentive and knew the menu really well. The beer and wine by the glass list was decent -- it wasn't huge, but there will be something for everyone. The food was very good: I particularly liked the butternut squash and celery root noodle salad. I also got the scallops on the recommendation of the server, and they were pretty good too. Friend reported she really liked her monkfish entree."

  • "The ambiance was great! The meal started off as a hit, as the appetizers are the best thing on the menu. The entrees were just okay and not particularly impressive given the price point. The server also didn't seem particularly knowledgeable about the menu nor was he overly excited about assisting with dinner selections. I'd likely go again for drinks and appetizers, but not sure this will be my new favorite restaurant in the neighborhood."

  • "I had high hopes for Thally given how adorable the restaurant appears. The rolls were delicious, but the rest of the meal fell flat. Dishes took forever to come out (40+ minutes each) and were cold. Service was nonexistent. This place won't last long."

  • "Loved the food! Every bite was delicious. We had the duck and rabbit, both were amazing. The poached pear salad was also fabulous. "

  • "Cool spot and the cocktail was good, but the food was just ok, not great. We went there to try it out as a possible graduation dinner spot and have decided to go elsewhere. I got the rabbit and thought it was good, but the appetizer was so so and my wife's monkfish came out cold even though it was early and the kitchen could not have been busy yet. Nothing worse than cold fish."

  • "Came here for a girls night dinner/drinks and it was just ok. Bartender couldn't have seemed less interested in what he was doing and was rather unfriendly. Cocktails were good. Our server for dinner was pleasant and attentive. I had the cauliflower soup, which was good but not great. I then had the duck which was ok. The slaw-type salad that was served with it was very good. i don't think my friends were overly impressed with the food, either. Nothing was terrible or had to be sent back, but I've had much better meals at this price point at many places in DC. I don't see this place surviving on mediocre food and service in this competitive neighborhood."

  • "Both the food and drinks are delicious, with interesting and clean flavors, from a well-constructed menu. Portions though, even from the entree selections, are on the small side. Fun seating options, friendly staff, and upbeat music make this an easy-to-enjoy local gem."

  • "We went for our anniversary and had a very nice time. The manager and waiter congratulated us on our 29 year celebration and made it an event. Nice, small space, nice decor and relaxing atmosphere."

  • "Heard from a friend that Thally was worth checking out so we took the plunge and went on a Wednesday night. Our waitress seemed a tad disorganized but nothing that detracted from the experience. The housemade sodas are a definite must try; they don't offer the usual Coke, Sprite, etc. but instead spiced sodas made in-house. The food overall was delicious - my duck was a tad overdone (asked for medium, got closer to well) but the appetizers and my cheesecake were some of the best in my neighborhood."

  • "Food was bread and the staff friendly and helpful! This was a hidden gem that I wish much success! We found it featured in magazine at our hotel. Glad we made the drive to find it. We had the roasted onion cheese and bacon jam appetizer mentioned in the article which was delightful. The server paired it with a great white wine. For our main course we had the rabbit and dumplings which was exceptional! Again the server paired it with a wonderful red for me. And my daughter had the wild mushroom risotto with tuffles also very good. We shared. The rolls were wonderful served with creamed butter with basil. This was our best meal during our time in DC."

  • "i have now eaten at thally three times with groups of three, four and five and shared each others food. everything has been delicious. cooked to order. served hot. beautifully displayed. friendly, warm and professional service. really walnut tables. thew steak is "to die for" so is the bread pudding. good choice of beers and wines. Sherman (the owner or manager) is a delightful host."

  • "Live around the corner and went for date night with expectation that this was a neighborhood gem. However, the price point of items on the menu put the meal into an above average dining category and thus Thally did not live up to its dinner price point. Dinner for two with appetizer, main course, dessert, one drink each and tax and tip was approaching $150. The scallop appetizer was good but only 2 scallops and the crab appetizer was ordinary and lacked crab flavor. Our Delmonico steaks were tough, however the scallop potatoes and shredded snap peas were quite tasty. I imagine Thally has the potential to be a neighborhood go to spot, but we are not the type of diners that will spend a $125 to $150 for a convenient place to grab diner."
