A word from Thally
Simple, Fresh, and Flavorful…are the three words that best describe all of Thally’s Modern American cuisine. Chef Ron Tanaka's menu items will change in accordance to what ingredients are perfectly in season at the time. You’re sure to find the freshest fish, savory meat, at least one robust vegetarian dish, unique salads and appetizers, and delectable soup. We also serve a rotating list of wines and craft beers, custom cocktails, house made sodas, and unique spirits in a comfortable 70 seat restaurant, which includes a 14 seat bar.

Our name pays tribute to our Shaw neighborhood as well as our families: “Thally” refers to the Tally-Ho Stables (built in 1883) located in Naylor Court directly behind our restaurant, as well as to Thalia, the daughter of General Manager & Co Owner Sherman Outhuok. (Thally is pronounced without saying the “h”, as in Tally-Ho.)

Diner Reviews
  • "8pm reservation at Thally with a couple of friends on Saturday night. Cute place - great ambiance. Not super crowded except during the 8:30-9:30 window. We suspected they might have been short staffed as we waited almost 30 minutes to order our food (couldn't make eye contact with our server who was running around). Ordered seafood special (trout) and it was one of the better fish entrees I've had in recent memory - perfectly cooked with unexpected yet complementary flavors."

  • "We wanted to take advantage of Restaurant Week and found Thally on Open Table. Based on other experiences with RW, we didn't have high hopes. BUT, this place was terrific. The entire menu was available which is practically unheard of in DC. We started w/ the carnitas sopa and romaine salad - both were fresh and tasty with nice serving sizes for that gave just enough of a taste to satisfy and just enough to make us want more. For entrees, we had the red snapper (fish of the day) and the duck. Both full of flavor and prepared perfectly. Chocolate cake for dessert and a complimentary taste of the grapefruit chello. Wonderful service, too. All in all a great experience - we can't wait to go back."

  • "First time at the restaurant via restaurant week. They exceeded expectations. The food was simply terrific. The must get is their butternut squash & celery "noodles" salad. Creative and great curry flavor. The restaurant excelled in using day to day ingredients and bringing a nice twist to it. The drinks (beer and honey wine) were hard to find anywhere else. More importantly, the service was impeccable. One of the owners helped served us (we were a group of six). They were so attentive, they even wrote down the song that was playing because we liked it."

  • "Great food, definitely want to come back and try the rabbit."

  • "Four of us dined here during Restaurant Week. We were pleased to find a generous selection of menu options--most if not all of the regular items were available, albeit a few with a small upcharge. Everything we ordered met with raves, including the wonderful bargain wine recommended by our server. I especially loved the butternut squash "noodle" salad, tagliatelle, pork tenderloin, and roasted cauliflower. Each featured an attractive presentation and an interesting, unusual, but completely harmonious blend of flavors. The only reason I gave less than five stars overall was the noise level, which made conversation challenging at times. I suspect the tables farthest from the bar would be a little quieter."

  • "Thally's menu - limited - done well, with interesting variations on standard items - well worth a visit - wine list could be broader, deeper, with a few more by the glass in the $7-10 range and bottles in the $25 - 40."

  • "A group of us went here because it was included in DC Restaurant week. Upon entering, we all feel in love with the industrial look and feel of the quaint restaurant. The service was amazing, and the servers were all knowledgeable of the menu and wine pairings. The 3 course meal was amazing, the chef is brilliant. We arrive soon after they opened, and it was not long before the restaurant was bustling. A great place to dine! Also make a reservation before going."

  • "I made a note to Thally that it would be my companion's birthday dinner, and they greeted us with champagne, and then presented dessert with a candle at the end of the meal. Great touch! All the food was awesome and interesting. Unique cocktails. I recommend the window tables."

  • "Thally lived up to its many great reviews. Trendy, hot spot with a youngish and sophisticated vibe. Felt like a hip city venue. Menu nicely limited in that there seemed to be one or two of all the major food groups. Starter of whisky roast onion with bacon jam was sublime--oozing with flavor, truly unique. Homemade tagliatelle was delicate and delightful; the roasted oyster mushrooms were earthy and sauce enveloped the pasta without being overwhelming. Portions were well sized. Finishing the meal with Pitango gelato was a perfect ending. I'll return for brunch and dinner with family and friends. Get a reservation before it's too late!"

  • "As a resident of Dupont Circle, I rarely get past 14th Street when dining. Thally is going to change that -- great food, great service and an interesting wine list. If you like many of the restaurants on 14th Street, you'll love Thally!"

  • "Thally was amazing. My beau and I went for our 2-year anniversary. I actually booked the reservation on OpenTable. They had two candles lit for us as well as two glasses of wine on the table for us as well. I had the striped bass and he had the flanked steak....which was superb. Not to mention the drinks were fantastic."

  • "Thally is the type of small, local restaurant with casual but attentive service and interesting and delicious food that other restaurants should strive to emulate. My party of four had a really exceptional experience."

  • "Happy hour here is a deal and a half, but for dinner Thally really shines. Excellent service, creative food (Bibb, burrata and crispy prosciutto!) and a warm ambiance combine to make this a great experience. The wine list is varied and begins at reasonable prices for very drinkable options."

  • "I love Thally. It is always extremely satisfying, and creative. Good cocktails, and good for conversation. You can keep the price down if you split some dishes with a friend, but everything is always delicious."

  • "It was a good friend and my first dinner at Thally. The space is good and tables are relatively private. The standout is the menu. I had the butternut squash and celery root "noodle" salad ($9) and the grilled chicken breast with dandelion-sunflower pesto, braised radicchio and white bean-carrot ragout ($21). The meal was outstanding. They had very reasonably priced bottles of wines starting at $32, but wine by the glass was relatively expensive (starting at $9 to $14 for a 5 ounce glass), so the bottle (with 25 ounces) is a much better deal. The restaurant was busy but not impossibly noisy. The service was good but relatively slow. Thaylly is a keeper and I will be back. We highly recommend."

  • "The food was excellent, the decor welcoming and the vibe neighborhood casual in the best possible way. We look forward to returning early and often!"

  • "I expected a great neighborhood joint when we came to Thally, and while the ambiance and bar fits that bill, the overall experience did not. The food just is not that great for the prices they are charging. $11 for 3 shrimp seems excessive. $10 for three teaspoons of ice cream with a scant pour of liquor over it seems excessive. And we left feeling like chumps because we had a similar meal at Le Diplomat a few days earlier that was a far better value and so very much better in terms of food quality. I wanted to really embrace this place, but I won't go back. I feel duped by the Washington Post review."

  • "We enjoyed an early celebratory night out at Thally. The food was terrific and the pace relaxed. Staff was helpful and attentive until the place filled up when they were stretched thin."

  • "This small restaurant delivers BIG! The owners go out of their way to ensure that all patrons are taken care of. The food is phenomenal! This is a place to come to dine and relax.....not if you are in a hurry. Great wine selections that pair nicely with the food. Don't miss this!"

  • "Everyone's food was great except for one dish, the flank steak, which arrived kind of unpleasantly charred and a bit over cooked (the snow peas that came with the steak - amazing). The rest of our table ordered the tagliatelle, duck, and fresh catch - all were excellent. The cocktails were great, although there was about a 20 minute wait for them, which seemed like a lot. The service is fine, we had a reservation (they called to confirm 1 hour before we got there), and they seemed kind of unprepared for us. There were a couple of long waits, but everyone was very nice and the waits were not so long that we got hungry or cranky."

  • "Thally is perfect for an informal night out with food with flavor and flair. The scallop appetizer, sea bass special and pasta were a cut above. Each showed imagination without being overwhelmed. We will go back!"

  • "Good food, cool space but need more wait staff. Makes me reluctant to return."

  • "Generally, the food was quite good. My only complaint is that the flank steak I had on our second trip was a bit salty, but it was done to perfection. Best description of the restaurant that it is "a quiet neighborhood restaurant with very good food." Drinks, however, are a problem. Slow service is an issue. The whiskey sour I ordered the first night had a maraschino cherry that looked like it had been picked up from the floor. On the second night I ordered and gin and tonic. They said they prided themselves on their house-made tonic water, but it was too sweet for my taste. Tonic water should be bitter."

  • "Really wanted to like this place because the interior is inviting, the service is really good and the cocktails are superb. But, it's true what reviewers have said on Yelp and this site that the portions are not equal to the price being paid. I ordered the White Chocolate Bread Pudding for desert and it was so small you could finish it in two bites."

  • "Perfect place for a romantic dinner or dinner with friends. The owners and wait staff are very personable. The menu provides the right amount of choice being that it is seasonal. The side of Brussels sprouts are a must! Big cider list. Will definitely return!"

  • "2 friends and I had happy hour here & they have good specials: $4 beer, $2 off wine, and some small bites. They have a really good beer list, though I was in the mood for wine, but couldn't find one I liked. We did end up having dinner - catch of the day, which was really good, though the accompaniments were really salty; and pasta. This was my 2nd time there & I will definitely go back."

  • "We brought a fried from NYC who was visiting DC. We wanted to try a restaurant in Shaw. We were delightfully surprised how good this reataurant was. The food is suburb. The service and ambiance could not have been better. I will be back many times to come."

  • "but bland food and loud w/o being too crowded :-( bummer...."

  • "Have been for dinner before and was always pleased with the great food at very reasonable prices (honestly, its a place I'd be happy to take a date, a business client or, as in this case, a few 'foody friends'). Decided to try it for happy hour too this time. Good selection of wine and beer at a happy hour discount and a few 'elegant' bar snack options made it worthwhile. If its a busy, loud happy hour you're looking for, this is not it. But if you just want to 'chill' with a few friends after work, followed by a good dinner, this is the perfect place."

  • "Had to wait about 1/2 hr after reservation time. The place was busy and seemed understaffed. The food is good, but maybe not as good as they think it is. "

  • "In for the weekend from WV to visit our daughter in the new Mrkt at O St. apartments, just a block away. What a great find! I couldn't decide on an entree so opted for a couple of "First Bites", including rabbit andouille and seared scallops, both presented and prepared to perfection. My wife chose the catch of the day, grouper, and it was exquisite (she offered only one tiny bite). The whole staff is very attentive and caring. We shall return, and soon."

  • "My brother was visiting from SoCal, so wanted to take him somewhere special. Heard lots of great things about Thally. Stewart, the owner, greeted us upon arrival and was very friendly, but the good service lacked from there on. Our server never came over to greet us or take our drink order - I had to flag him down after waiting for 15 minutes. He took about 20 more minutes to take our food order, after I flagged him down. They ran out of the wine we were drinking after only 2 bottles, so we had to switch to another that wasn't as good. Our server also started to take away the dessert menus before we even had a chance to look or order. The food was OUTSTANDING, which was the saving grace! Hopefully next time we'll have better service."

  • "Wonderful spot, terrific bar, kindly service, if a bit slow, an eclectic menu carefully prepared but perhaps too clever--e.g., squash/celery "noodles" with lavender was a good idea that wasn't very tasty. i'd go again, but order something more down to earth, meaning, spices and flavorings the chef can handle."

  • "A friend and I recently dined here for the first time and have been singing its praises ever since. Every item that we ordered was full of great flavor and delicious. We shared two First Bites and two Big Bites because it was all so good. We'll be coming back here and bringing friends with us for sure."
