  • "In a word: terrible. My wife had eaten there previously and was impressed, so I made a reservation for her birthday. When we arrived, it was closed. Signage was off the building, doors were locked (though a note advertising their hours for the previous weekend was still on the door). So, we were left to scramble to find someplace to eat. Never again. If I could give less than one star, I would."

  • "They were closed with no notice no signs on the doors and still accepting reservations.."

  • "Good innovative menu. Delicious choices. Not so noisy that you can't discuss business."

  • "I recently enjoyed lunch at the Test Kitchen. We were promptly seated, the food arrived at the table in record time, and the server was attentive. Although it was a little loud for my preference, it wasn't at a level that would prompt a complaint. I feel that lunch in downtown Calgary should be quieter as many of the participants are there on business and it is uncomfortable to have to speak loudly to be heard. I ordered the Vermicelli which had ginger flavoured beef, lots of veggies, and rice noodles. It was thai red curry flavour and was so good!"

  • "Went here for a work lunch. Had this disgusting tuna "burger". I love seared tuna sandwiches anywhere we go, but this one was simply gross. The side salad was literally 5 pieces of lettuce and a marble sized ball of goat cheese and two segments of grapefruit. It overall wasn't a lot of food, and it was not very good tasting. My colleagues ate their food politely, but after talking with them they were equally unimpressed with their food. Prices were high too, averaged $20pp with water an/or pop to drink. That is just too much for lunch. The server was great, but she could not save this place. Never going back"

  • "The noise level is great for a energetic feel however their were not very many people in the restaurant and I could barely here our server or our colleagues and we had to move from the lounge to the restaurant side and even that was to load, an the consensus was from all the guest to make sure my hearing was correct..... you have a great atmosphere, I just don't want you to have to deal with someone saying lets take a client out for lunch to Test, and people say no, to noisy we can not chat with them...."

  • "Great food, bit overpriced. Waitress very attentive, perhaps a bit overenthusiastic. Music was too loud, couldn't hear my friends talking and it was just lunch time."

  • "Gave the old Mimi's a try and man what a disappointment. The server suggested two dishes and we tried both - what a mistake. First was the lasagna which was overcooked and the noodles were doughy. Ick. Next up was the club which was tasteless served with a cup of fries served in a fast food disposable cup. I made a comment about how trashy the presentation was and the server advised it was a joke. I commented it wasn't a funny one. Service was so slow considering the restaurant was only 1/2 filled. Advised the server as we went along how disappointed we were but nothing taken off the bill. Will never go back and they're right across the street from our office."

  • "I'm still confused about the concept - "test kitchen" but regardless the meal was fabulous. Fresh ravioli and perfect lunch size so to not be asleep at my desk afterwards. I would suggest easing up on the prices at lunch. Otherwise, excellent experience."

  • "As a visitor to calgary I decided to try this place since I heard good things about the one in Burlington ontario. I was pleasantly suprised. Menu had a broad selection of items, service was outstanding. .a very efficient guy who seemed to truly love his job. Overall it was a fantastic lunch. . If I ever find myself in Calgary again I will definitely be making reservations! !"

  • "We liked the idea of a test kitchen - a place where chefs could try out new ideas. My seared tuna burger did have a Japanese slant to it. However my husband's fish & chips, while well prepared, were no different than he would have got elsewhere in the city. Would like to check off "fit for foodies" but not yet. As to would you recommend -- would like to see some improvements made before really endorsing. The place was only 30% full the lunch hour we were there. Yet the noise level was quite high. It seems that no effort had been made to soften noise - all surfaces were hard."

  • "First of all I love this concept. This restaurant strives to keep an open minded view on food. They don't want to be pinned down to one sort of concept...if the lunch crowd could enjoy a great meal with decent service I think this place could be really popular. Menus change every two weeks to keep it fresh. On line Yelp reviews do not accurately reflect Test Kitchen YYC at all because chefs are invited to test new concepts and menus at Test Kitchen YYC. We attended first the Anju popup, then the full menu test on Friday night and both nights service was outstanding. Great drinks and amazing food from Chef Roy Oh and crew."

  • "Went there for the Anju pop-up, so Chef Roy had taken over the kitchen and was basically serving the Anju menu. Love Anju, so we had some great food. Service was quite slow, despite the restaurant not being busy."

  • "The salads are all very good with an added breast of chicken - perhaps it should be presented as an option. Currently it isn't written that way on the menu."

  • "I was hesitant to book here given the many recent reviews that complained of poor service. I was there for lunch and had great service. The waiter was quite attentive, the food arrived quickly and my water glass was never empty! Give it a shot. Interesting food and good location. My friend had the short rib grill cheese and loved it. My ahi burger was ok -- a little over seared."

  • "I went for lunch at Test Kitchen recently and had a positive experience. The menu was simple but inspired, and food was very tasty with a creative whimsy. Service as friendly and quick."

  • "Very nice to finally have a decent lunch spot that has a current menu and is bright and energetic. A little like one of the new Earls, but way less noise. Good menu, good food. "

  • "Second time for lunch and some thing. Cold steak, over priced and the service is not great. Too bad because the location is perfect for the downtown lunch crowd. "

  • "The food and service was very good this time. I was pleased at how quickly our waitress attended to us and how quick the food came. We were able to finish within an hour (which is perfect for lunches downtown) without feeling rushed."

  • "The lunch was good however there were only two servers in our area and it took quite a while for our drinks to come as well as to order. Once we ordered our lunch took almost 40 minutes to come out which is not very conducive to a lunch crowd that has 60 minutes for lunch."

  • "expensive lunch not worth the price ;no guest chefs at lunch which was not advertised so we were disappointed, hardly anyone at restaurant but waited initially to be seated. "

  • "We recently went to the Test Kitchen to celbrate my son's 18th birthday. I guess that was a good thing because the first thing the server asked for was his ID - I guess maybe we were sitting in the lounge? Couldn't really tell because the restaurant was completely empty. The food was very tasty although the service seemed very slow - possibly not trying to hover with so few people in the place. I think this place is probably great for lunch (if the service is faster at that time) as it is a nice room and would be fun with a bit more going on. We enjoyed the evening and my son enjoyed his first cocktail."

  • "Weird experience. Reserved for an early dinner through Opentable as we were seeing a show at 7. Arrived at the front and said we had a dinner reservation, they said to sit wherever we liked as it wasn't busy. Not knowing the place we did that, so we were seated in the bar area with a small after work crowd. We ordered some good food from the menu but it was only on going to the washroom that I walked through the whole restaurant area which was ich bigger and has auch cooler menu! Bizarre. Maybe there was a misunderstanding; service was ok but no idea what the restaurant part is like, will have to try again!"

  • "The service to be seated, get drinks, and order our meals was very slow. We tried to order the fish tacos (recommended by a friend to try them) but the server said they had "just run out a few minutes ago" which was frustrating after all the waiting. I will try this spot again as I never base my opinion on one visit, but the first experience was lacking. "

  • "Large space split between what seems to the lounge and the dining room. Lounge seemed to have a few more people than the dining room side we were on. Service was good and easy to have a business conversation. Limited number of salads on menu if that is what you are carving. Club sandwich was tasty. Variety of flatbreads on menu but were pricey to me. Not sure how often they plan to change menu up being it's a test kitchen. "

  • "This restaurant just opened a few weeks ago. The wine list is still being created. However, the food and the service were wonderful. We had the romaine salad which has a great Chipotle sauce on it. I also had the Penne with bison meatballs. If you are a true Foodie, you will love this place."

  • "Location is great. Decor is very nicely done. Service was a bit slow. Waiter disappeared and was difficult to find to attempt to refill water (never found him to get this done) and track him down to get our bill. Food was very mediocre. (My burger was very dry and my guest's steak sandwich wasn't anything to write home about. Wouldn't go out of my way to return but since I both live and work in the area, I'm sure that if opportunity presents itself, I might give Test Kitchen as second chance. Price was in line with what I would expect from a restaurant at this level."

  • "I have dined at Ric's in the past and have enjoyed the food and the experience. Unfortunately during this trip, I was the victim of an added ingredient in my pizza - a screw! I realize that things like this happen (the manager suggested that the screw may have fell out of the oven) but the outcome could have been disasterous. I saw my dentist right after the incident and we are continuing to monitor my teeth for potential cracks and other damage, which is an inconvenience, but thankfully nothing fell out after I bit squarely on the metal fastener. It will be a while before I go back, which is too bad, because the gluten-free pizza is otherwise very good."

  • "Disappointing - very slow service at lunch hour; almost a 30 minute wait for two pizzas. Our waitress was lackadaisacal and not paying attention. The pizzas were just POOR - the meat pizza was weird and odddly tastelss with too much cheese and not enough heat in the oven. It clearly sat on the heat lamp pass-through for 5-10 minutes and the crust must have come froma a freezer-bag and tasted like cardboard. For a "Test Kitchen" this seems really strange. The Test Kitchen has a great location, but they really need to step up their game at lunch otherwise this re-tool of Ric's lounge is going to be another re-tool in 8 months. "
