Diner Reviews
  • "In this post modern world this old fashioned classic old school place is an enjoyable "comfort food" experience, you leave full and happy!"

  • "I will never forget Teske's. The food was very German and tasty, which is what you'd expect from a German restaurant, but what really made it a dining experience was the atmosphere. Funky surroundings, the house band oom-pah-pah-ing outdoors, and an interesting blend of patrons made for a good time. The service is perfunctory, but not because the wait staff don't care, it's because it seemed like a busy Saturday night, and they were hustling to keep everyone happy. I know I was. Thanks, Teske's!"

  • "Authentic German food and spirits. Great German band playing in the beer garden."

  • "Great food and when the outside is open it's even better. Huge amount of food makes it a good value but it isn't really cheap."

  • "One price and a full dinner, incl. dessert. Generous portions and authentic German food. Meat is king - tender, succulent. The potatoes (especially scalloped) are incredible. There's outdoor/patio (Beer Garden) dining - - sheltered from wind. Live band music is great. It's a truly happy place to be."

  • "We dined at Teske's for our beer lovin' son's 28th birthday; the food exceeded our expectations. Every beer is served in its own special glass/mug. We ordered buffalo meatloaf with two sauces, smoked pork shank, and boar sausages. The flavors were balanced and delicious. The sauerkraut, noodles, and fingerling potatoes side dishes were also delicious. The savory flavors reminded us of Christmas dinner, but the portions were not too huge. Two entries came with apple strudel, which was okay."

  • "The staff was extremely friendly and attentive without being intrusive. The food was delicious. For a party of three we had the night's special appetizer (I don't recall what it was but it reminded me of stuffing balls with a cheesy sauce and bacon bits. Don't get wrong it was amazing) the lamb special, the pork cutlet with anchovies and an egg and I ordered the salmon. my only complaint is the seating. We were so close to everyone it was hard to pay attention to our conversation when we could hear everyone else around us."

  • "We took the opportunity to seek out a reservation at La Germania after a 10 year lapse since our last visit. I does not seem to have changed a bit. The some of the same faces were still serving food. We took this as a treat for my 13 yr old grandson to experience German dining culture and tastes. Freg, our waiter, very patiently assisted us as we deciphered the menu, mostly by admiring food as it was delivered to our fellow diners. Throughout the night we tried at least 30% of the items on the menu, and each one was a delight. The favorites were the bratwurst and knockwurst sausages, and the red cabbage side dish. A load of the homemade schnitzel added the comfort aspect to the meal."

  • "Our family had not been to Teske's for years. We held a family birthday there. We had a group of 12 and were seated easily, food was great, service was perfect. We talked, ate, and celebrated for over three hours. Great JOB!!!"

  • "We had reservations for 2pm. They close at 2. Why take reservations for the time at which you close? They were nice enough but we felt very rushed. Going out to lunch on a weekday is a special thing, and the food qualified. The rush, however, makes it unlikely I'll go back."

  • "There isn't anything on the menu that's particularly experimental, but that's not why I go to Teske's. I go for the classics: schnitzel, sauerbraten, wurst, goulash, and great beers. It's boisterous without being rowdy, kid-friendly in the sense that a loud child's voice simply blends into the background on a Saturday night, and the service was down-to-earth, friendly, and completely unrushed. Ours was a party of 6 adults for dinner after a matinee performance downtown. We had appetizers, main course, and dessert to eat; the only let-down was one of appetizers on special. Beers, wines, and after-dinner liqueurs were all fantastic. Everyone went home with leftovers at about $55 per person with drinks included."

  • "The food is just like I remember it from Germany. I recommend ordering in advance (a day or so along with your reservation) the baked Schweine Haxe. Since this takes hours to prepare, you can't be sure that it is available unless you order it in advance. They will serve it for lunch or dinner but you must have a good appetite because it is a large portion."

  • "Heard of Teske's from a friend, but never made the effort to go there. Went on Valentine's Day and they were exceptionally busy, but the food was absolutely killer. Great appetizers, several courses with each meal and we all went home with leftovers as the Chef tried to feed us to death. Great German beers to choose from and the food was exceptional. Perfectly cooked...ham hock huge and tasty/tender, my son's steak strips were blackened and seared in a wine sauce which made me want to lick the plate. I was unaware how flavorful and delicately delicious a chef could make German food. Every plate had a different style of potato - all were cooked perfectly and a delight to eat and share with each other. We are going back!"

  • "The German potato dumplings are hard to find in this area. Teske's dumplings are as close to the ones I had in Munich that I can find. The decor is similar to a restaurant you would in Germany. I love this place."

  • "Having been to Germany many times I couldn't help but look out the window and see the San Jose tram rolling by as I enjoyed wonderful German food and beer and have to remind myself I was in CA. Very nice experience..."

  • "Excellent restaurant, a place you need to go at least once! My girlfriend and I had a great experience, but a little pricy for us to always dine. A couple beers each, appetizer, and dinner plates was about $120 - not bad for a place like this! Experience was awesome."

  • "I've been going to Teske's since the late 1980's. I have always had a great meal, wonderful service and very authentic decor. Very good diversity on the menu to account for any guest's preferences. Highly recommend Teske's."

  • "Our first time here at Teske's. Family run place is no longer owned by the Teske family but has been owned by another family since 1990, don't worry everything is still great. You can tell they really care about their patrons and being involved in the restaurant as I discovered one of them was waiting tables and another was hosting. Our food was great. The meal was well paced even for being a very busy valentines day night. Our server was very pleasant and accommodating. The meals included soup salad and strudel for desert with the price which was very nice. They had a great German beer selection including bottles and drafts. Would definitely go back!"

  • "We had not been to Teskes for quite a few years prior to this visit. It was a special menu offered for Valentines Day with fixe price for entree, salad, soup & dessert The food was very good. The service was also very good my ony complaint is that we asked to have our strudel to go as we were too full to eat it there & when we got home & decided to have it later we realized that the portion of strudel looked to about half of what we had seen being served at the restaurant. In fact it was one strudel cut in half in the box. But other than that it was a good visit & I guess the lesson learned is leave room to have the dessert there or else be sure to check the to go box prior to leaving the restaurant."

  • "Teske's really is a hidden gem, growing up in San Jose I had no idea this place existed, and now I feel cheated! Awesome selection of beers, great ambiance, great food. Come hungry, the portions are huge and make sure to order the jalapeño cheese pretzels!!"

  • "This place is so not what we expected. Our waiter Frank was so attentive and knowledgeable about the place. Frank has work at Teske's for 25 years and his love for the place shows. I ordered the veal shank and my husband ordered a more wild dish. both were presented so beautifully and tasted so Delicious. We look forward to going back to Teske's again"

  • "Was craving their sauerbraten, and wasn't disappointed! Everything was very good including the beer. They have such a large selection of beer, and we tried each others. My mom who is picky loved their Rubens."

  • "Without really reading the menu, our group of 3 ordered 2 appetizers (to share) and an entree each. The appetizers were to die for - scallop wrapped in bacon and phyllo and huge hot potato pancakes with ice cold smoked salmon. Next a light and flavorful Potato Soup, then a Salad, then our entree's! Everyone had a great dish but the venison was a real treat. The best Apple Strudel this side of Bavaria for dessert. Great service & food. The only thing "off" is the lack of privacy in the ladies room. The swinging door is only about 4 ft - covering you when seated, but only chest high when standing. Quite disconcerting when a line forms! The beer provides lubricant to make it funny but it is odd enough to be added to this review!"

  • "To start off, I arrived just about 6:15pm and met up with a friend. Thankfully I had gotten there just in time to beat the dinner rush, as apparently this place gets very busy around 6:30-7:00pm. You'll probably first notice the bar upon entering the restaurant, but do not fret as they have a large dining area. Upon being seated I gazed upon a menu littered with all sorts of delicious sounding meals, and different types of beer (Which they mostly serve by the pint, so be sure you have a D.D. if you plan on having a few.) They have specialty entrées every night, we managed to try one which was absolutely delicious. Despite the rush of people all dying to get some tasty food, the service was still great! I highly recommend Teske's Germania."

  • "We went for lunch. We will go back for dinner when the menu is more extensive. I want to try the sauerbraten or rindsrouladen. My husband tasted my potato side dish (coursely mashed with pepper and something else I couldn't quite identify) and froze -- the last time he tasted that potato dish was when he was stationed in Germany many, many years ago. If you like German food, go. If you don't know if you like German food, and are used to California cuisine ala Santana Row, you might not care for the course brown bread and authentic non-elegant German flavors."

  • "We have been going to Teskes for over 20 years now. The food is great and the staff is very friendly and knowlegable on German cusine and beers. During the summer, sitting outside in the beer garden is a treat."

  • "I enjoy the atmosphere of this authentic German restaurant. The good is traditional and tasty. I had the salmon and found it delicious. All meals include soup, salad, main course and Apple Strudel. The Apple Strudel is to give for! Street parking only so try to arrive a bit early!"

  • "Having lived in Bavaria, I can say Teske's is a good substitute. As in a typical Bavarian restaurant, the meat dishes work so well because of the sauce. Potato salad, spaezle, bread and red sauerkraut are right on! Real German beers on tap. Building and decor are good representations. A few details were missing. They brought half-liter beers by default to all guests, but in Bavaria they would bring a full liter mug to each man, or at least ask. Their menu didn't offer Apfelschoerle or Weinschoerle (sparkling water mixed 50/50 with apple juice or wine). They served ketchup for dipping the fries -- a real Bavarian place puts it in a squeeze bottle along with mayo. Save for these details, I felt like I was in Bavaria for 90 minutes!"

  • "Had steins of beer at the bar- great selection of German beers! Had the pot roast and polish sausage. Each came with delicious split pea soup, salad- reminded me a little of House of Prime Rib, yum, and apple streudel. Ready to explode by the end, b/c I wanted to eat it all! Also, We had the jalapeno cheese pretzel. Served piping hot, it was fantastic! The restaurant seemed very 1960s/1970s 'kitschy?' I guess since I've only very briefly been to Germany, I may not be completely credible, but it seemed like an authentic atmosphere to me! Our waitress had a slight German accent too and was very helpful. It was a fun, different sort of night. After living in SF for 6 years, we were starving for some culture and Teske's was a great time!"

  • "I have eaten at Teske's 4 times now. I like German food, and think they do a very nice job of serving up large portions of the heavy foods offered here. The bartender we had is very knowledgeable on German beers- and made some great suggestions. The food is served in 5 courses. The soups (cream of asparagus and split pea) are actually my favorite part of the meals. The meat dishes are very generous in portions. You will not go away hungry."
