A word from Terzo Piano
Terzo Piano, located on the 3rd floor of the Modern Wing of the Art Institute of Chicago, is a must stop for lunch daily and Thursday dinner. It features the signature cuisine of Chef Tony Mantuano, who has been delighting Chicagoans for years at the four-star Italian restaurant, Spiaggia. The food is all fresh, local, organic and sustainably produced. In season, you may also dine al fresco on the covered piazza, while enjoying spectacular views of Millennium Park and the Chicago skyline.

Terzo Piano is open to the public without requiring admission to the Art Institute.

Guests may access the restaurant either via the Nichols Bridge which extends from Millennium Park and places you right at the restaurants entrance or off of the Monroe Drive entrance of Art Institute and take the elevator to the third floor

My wife and I decided to try Terzo Piano on a recent visit to the Art Institute. We are glad we did since it was raining that day and we did not need to walk in the rain after lunch. The food was good. I had the flat bread and my wife had the lamb burger. Both were prepared and presented well. However, being on the third floor of the modern wing of the Art Institute dictated that the furniture, decor, and ambiance were 'modern'. It left me feeling cold. We ate at 11 am with few people around. Therefore, the service was great. However, I believe if this restaurant was full, it would probably be too noisy for my taste.

This place has great potential - the food has room for improvement but it's the service was really quite terrible. No welcoming smiles, no welcoming words from any of the three staff at the door (and no goodbyes as we left). Our waitress was quite rather cold and we noticed the mood permeated the other staff too. Generally the experience leaves me with the feeling that I don't want to return, which is a shame as the views and location are great.

This is a go-to restaurant for lunch even if you're not there for the art. No Museum fee for just dining. Light, lovely space designed by world-class architect, delectable (but not over-fussy) food, reasonable prices for such a prize. Service is attentive and efficient, not intrusive or chatty-chatty.

The flatbread with prosciutto, taleggio, arugula and fig was perfect, especially accompanied by a nice bottle of cava. Service a bit slow, but it seemed like our server had about 8-10 tables to take care of. The outdoor area is very pleasant - too bad we won't be able to enjoy it again until next year. Would be nicer if the chairs were as comfortable as they are good-looking.

Disappointing as a dinner option. Ambiance at night not great. Not even candles on the table, which would help. Outdoor terrace very plain; almost looks like a cafeteria. Only the views save it. Staff not terribly professional. Much prefer it for lunch, when the natural light and city views make it such an attractive place to eat.

Our favorite "go to" place for fancy lunch has evaporated. The restaurant is looking tired (dining chairs scratched/dirty,white bread plates stained, dirtly glasses). Food was still good. Wait staff ok but not helpful. The most disappointing thing-being greeted by unfriendly hostesses & surly guards. All were rude. The hostesses made us feel like a bother, waiting 15min for a table among 6 empty tables. No smiles or welcome. The guard on the deck yelled at our son, then us, as we walked on the terrace to outside windows for view of park. My son touched a bench...but evidently dirty outside art? Ok- but yelling?! Felt like we were in a worn out tourist-trap instead of a special dining atmosphere. So disappointing...

A unique setting and bright atmosphere. My comments only refer to lunch. The appetizers and salads are their strengths. We recently had the fried artichokes and calamari: delicately fried to enhance the natural flavors. The sauces were a bit overbearing though, so apply lightly. If you are a "salad for lunch" diner, you will delighted by creative choices. The entree choices are inventive with such delicately combined flavors. However the portions a just a bit small (for the quantity of food and, yes, for the price). We solve this by strategically ordering appetizers. Finally, I cannot say enough good things about the service. They are friendly, always helpful and make themselves available as much or as little as you desire.

The menu though limited for breakfast/brunch has good selections. My husband had the lamb burger which he did not like but couldn't say why beyond taste, sometimes that's enough. Service was courteous, attentive and well paced. Our guest and I enjoyed our meals very much. The table split an order of lobster hollandaise fries (very rich) which we didn't come close to finishing. I had one of the waffles asking for a number of substitutions which the kitchen graciously accommodated. My nephew had one of the flatbreads, it was delicious. Our reservation was for 11:00 am on a Sunday, I chose this time of day often when visiting the AI. We were seated promptly, served promptly at the table of our choice and were on our way without being rushed.

Very nice and unique ambiance. Menu options limited and for the high prices I expect more options. I realize that the connection to the AI causes TP to be a hybrid restaurant. So, we go there occasionally for the inspiring architecture and views and the food is good enough to keep coming back.

I hosted a party of three friends for brunch prior to visiting the Magritte Exhibit Sunday 9/14/2014. Each of us thoroughly enjoyed our meal & the experience of dining at Terzo. We split an order of French fries with lobster & hollandaise which though it sounded good on paper seemed as if it would fail in the preperation. The dish did not dissapoint. Our server was present, alert & pleasant. The menus is limited but the offerings for brunch hit all the marks. If you're looking for eggs, waffles, meats, you'll find something from which to choose. The Garden Cafe is open, I've read many recent reviews complaining about it's closing. If you want to dine Al Fresco & the sun filled Terzo isn't enough the Garden Cafe is open.

After not going back to this restaurant for at least a year because we never had a good meal, I thought I would try it again with my guest. The menu is dismally small, there is nothing much enticing. The bread is so bad it's a doughy mess. Luckily we got some toasted bread. We chose the charcuterie plate and some cheese thinking they cannot mess up too much. The prosciutto was old and grey, the cheese for 6$ was two tiny pieces of less than an inch squeare and about a quarter inch thick - although it was good chevre. We have eaten in many museum restaurants, incl. recently at the St. Louis Art Museum where we had an excellent meal and do not understand why the CAI cannot do better!
