  • Catering: The sparkling, glass-curtained room presents light filled space with floor to ceiling windows. Terzo Piano offers a white canvas for you to create your perfect event. This versatile space may be combined with gallery viewing for flowing receptions into the thousands.

    Our semi-private event space is available for groups of 30 to 80 for seated lunch or dinner and from 30 to 150 for receptions. Please contact Kelly Nichols at 312-443-8654 for all the details.

  • Parking Details: Take advantage of the museum's valet parking option. It's only $25 per vehicle (cash only), and drop off is right outside our doors. Self park is available across the street in the Millennium Park garages.
A word from Terzo Piano
Terzo Piano, located on the 3rd floor of the Modern Wing of the Art Institute of Chicago, is a must stop for lunch daily and Thursday dinner. It features the signature cuisine of Chef Tony Mantuano, who has been delighting Chicagoans for years at the four-star Italian restaurant, Spiaggia. The food is all fresh, local, organic and sustainably produced. In season, you may also dine al fresco on the covered piazza, while enjoying spectacular views of Millennium Park and the Chicago skyline.



Terzo Piano is open to the public without requiring admission to the Art Institute.



Guests may access the restaurant either via the Nichols Bridge which extends from Millennium Park and places you right at the restaurants entrance or off of the Monroe Drive entrance of Art Institute and take the elevator to the third floor

  • "we visited for brunch recently and won't be going back or recommending to anyone - several things not available from the menu, long wait for our orders to arrive, one salad order was tipped onto the table by the server upon setting it down, the flatbread was practically deep-fried and nothing looked appetising at all - please stop trying so hard to give a new spin on classic dishes - just get them right!"

  • "We have a flat rule: eat in the best dinning room at an art museum and you will never go wrong. Food here seems a bit less interesting than several years ago. They throw a bad salad on every plate to fill the plate up. The room is wonderfully plain and the servers are excellent."

  • "Reading reviews I was expecting a high price for a moderate experience. Instead, the meal was fantastic and the price reasonable. And the view was wonderful. I had the charcuterie plate which I often get in France and Italy and this was equal. The while fish spread, the chicken liver pate, the, prosciutto and sopressata were all very nice. And the breads were just out of the oven. With a glass of wine, the bill was about $30 each, which I didn't not think was excessive given that we were in the Art Institute and on the roof overlooking the Chicago skyline."

  • "What were the designers thinking when they used all white decor in a restaurant? After 5 years, the arms if the white chairs are dirty, the edges if the tables are nicked. The sculptures in the plexiglass cases are so strange as to be unappetizing. The good is good, the service was so so. For example, no spoons provided for a root beer float, no salt and pepper on the table. The rear of the restaurant is reserved for private gatherings do you have to walk through a private event to reach the men's or lady's room. But, it's the best restaurant the Art Institute offers and the evening view out the window looking over the Modern Wing is really beautiful."

  • "On multiple visits it amazes me that there's no one to bus tables. Repeatedly, different wait staff has brought the main couse, pushed the empty appetizer plate out of the way with the main course plate, and then just walked away leaving empty-handed with the empty appetizer plates still on the table. Not very classy."

  • "This was my first disappointing visit to Terzo Piano since it opened.The outside seating was closed during lunch due to a private event that evening.Had I known this when I made the reservation, we would have gone elsewhere. Plenty of tables were available at 1pm on a Thursday, but the hostess would not seat our party of 3 until everyone arrived.The two who were there would have enjoyed a glass of wine and appetizer while waiting for our third.When ordering,we debated between the charcuterie plate and a signature salad (to accompany the frittata).We did not know the frittata is served with a large arugula salad,so we ended up with two large salads with a side of eggs.Wish we had known, as we would have ordered the charcuterie plate instead."

  • "Went for a leisurely lunch with friends on a Thursday and was my first time there. Love the minimal white decor and it sets up the views beautifully. Our food was fresh and very tasty, and our server seemed genuinely happy to be there. Such a great space and would be an amazing venue for a night time dinner or event. The chicken salad with avocado (just a few small pieces) and ginger infused dressing ( bland dressing- no ginger flavor at all) and my guest's flatbread had very minimal topping. They should perhaps be less fancy in their menu choices and provide better tasting food."

But at lunch, the view is non-existent so we sat outside where the view was better but not spectacular by any means. So go for dinner on Thursday nights and sit indoors!"

  • "The menu was limited - certain portions small - and the prices rather pricey. I expected a more "special" atmosphere and more food choices based on the menu prices. I feel the museum's café has far more interesting food selections and they're more flavorful (and far less expensive). I picked Terzo Piano because I wanted a special setting (and reservations) for out of town guests. I'm not certain I would return. The outdoor seating was lovely and saved the day. Had we sat inside, I feel I would have been really disappointed in my experience. Perhaps the restaurant's persona is designed to limit casual tourists from visiting it."

  • "So convenient dining here after viewing exhibitions at the Art Institute. The light-filled, minimalist space is perfect after feasting your eyes on all the museum has to offer. The noise level is refreshingly moderate and you can't beat the views. Menu is limited but interesting and generally well done, although the signature English pea salad is both very difficult to eat and served sans peas. Well-spread wine list. Pleasant service."

  • "Our group of seven was seated right away because we had reservations for lunch but the restaurant was pretty empty. Our server was attentive but I was surprised and disappointed that my $18.00 ravioli included only TWO ravioli!!!! That's $9.00 for each cheese ravioli. That's ridiculous and pretentious and it should be stated in the menu that you will only get two pieces. There were some cauliflower tidbits the size of my small finger nail thrown on top of the two ravioli so needless to say I was hungry after I ate my meal. Thank goodness there was some bread on the table to eat along with the two ravioli. The portions are too small for the prices charged. Two other members of our party said their linguini with clams were small too."

  • "I invited a friend ... We both ordered an arugula salad... There was nothing else on our plate... light vinaigrette over a lot of arugula. The chef probably forgot the avocado, cilantro, carrots, etc. my friend was my guest. A total embarrassment... for a $17.00 per salad (!). I have been an AIC member since 1982... Never before did I have such a "light" lunch in the a so called "gourmet" restaurant. I will not go back there.... The view is not enough!... The AIC cafeteria is much better."

  • "We have enjoyed Terzo Piano several times for lunch and once for dinner. This time we brought guests. I ordered a salad which ended being a lot of greens and almost nothing else. The menu claimed to have red bell pepper (tiny bits of shaved pepper, too small to have taste or crunch), avocado (one slice cut into small pieces), and chicken breast (about 6 pieces each the size of my thumb nail). Dressing was good, but did not make up for the lack of ingredients. One of our guests' meal was very small; the other's flatbread serving was huge. We expect flavorful, European sized portions. Inconsistency was disappointing. Service was very good."

The food is very good but the atmosphere is almost cafeteria like. Good for a bite after work while the weather is good so you can walk to the Petrillo Band Shelter afterwards but not necessarily for a date night or special occasion."

  • "The spectacular setting and beautiful design of Terzo Piano are wasted with sub-par food and service. It took quite a long time for our waitress to acknowledge us. She seemed rushed and uninterested. The food was bland all around: my tortilla espanola looked and tasted like it had deflated in the microwave, and everyone seemed to just pick at the food on their plates. What should have been a great brunch was a real disappointment."

  • "and you will be treated to delightful and flavorful food. The waiter was very helpful and steered me to the lamb burger, which turned out to be very flavorful. Nothing was left behind. My sister had the chicken cacciatore which was out of this world! Before any of this we ordered the eggplant fries and were amazed that this usually soft vegetable could be turned into a crunchy delight, you've got to try them. The decor was not to my taste, the art installation was "odd," but seating was comfortable and the room was clean. While the meal was not inexpensive (our bill came to $85.00 with tip for lunch) the flavors are impressive and worth the price."
