Tersiguel's French Country RestaurantVery good, though not at its bestI've been going to Tersiguel's for years, and it's one of my favorite places. This last time it wasn't quite at its best, though. The Salade Michel lacked flavor until my friend asked for more dressing on the side. The sausage with potato salad first course was dry. The rockfish en croute, the fish special, was also lacking. The scallops in passion fruit butter sauce, however, were superb, as was the buckwheat crepe with caviar. Food is French, excellent sauces, portion size was modest, which this perpetual dieter really appreciated! LIked the free taste of cold cucumber soup before the meal, and little birthday mousse afterwards. We were offered a choice of tables, either main dining room or small (two tables plus bar) room in the front by the window facing Main Street, which we chose--essentially a private dining room. A little pricey, but not out of line for fine French dining. The menu is fairly stable and consists of standard French fare, and indeed the name "French Country Restaurant" is apt: one will rarely find anything especially innovative--just excellently prepared food from quality ingredients, locally sourced where possible. The service is impeccable: respectful, attentive, and non-obtrusive. Tables are far enough apart, and the building's acoustics conducive to quiet conversation. The food is unique and outstanding. The service is very attentive but not intrusive. We were going to sit in the Hunt Room (?) but it seemed very crowded in terms of the table placement. The service, quality of food and presentation are consistent and always above average. It's location in old town Ellicott City is great for spending some time in the neighborhood, before or after your meal. As in France, they greet you with a small complementary treat . This time we were treated to baby radishes.On this, our third visit, we sat in the garden sun room which which cheered us up considerably on such a cloudy spring day. Our very attentive and informative waiter suggested the Brittany soup which was perfect in every way. The duck was brilliantly tender and moist. The waiter recommended a tapas-like seafood starter, that included the best calamari I've ever had! We ordered the two specials of the night: halibut and soft shell crab, and New York strip with pork belly. Both were cooked to perfection; melt-in-your-mouth. Excellent Brussels sprouts on the side. We couldn't leave without the Crepes Suzette, complete with table-side performance. Fantastic! The wait staff was attentive without being intrusive. There was enough variety to satisfy most tastes and a number of the food offerings seemed authentically 'French country.' A close second to the outstanding food was the service. It was exceptional.
