This has to be one of those places which stays with you once you have eaten there. A well-designed layout and exceptional service. Now, about the meat of the review...the osso buco (bucco for natives) fell from the bone without a fight. Most excellent when you also choose from a pretty nice selection of wines.

We've been enjoying Terrapin for some years now. Every vacation to Va Beach we have dinner at Terrapin our first and last nights. This Sunday we loved the beet salad, scallops, ricotta dumplings, halibut with coconut milk-aromatics sauce, and a lovely Pouilley Fousee (spelling?). Linda and I try repeatedly to determine why the ambience is so perfect here. It's lovely, casual yet special, always different and of course delicious. Some mystical combination of factors, I suppose. Just right!!

I ate at about 10 restaurants (evenly highly-rated restaurants) in a week looking for THE ONE! Didn't find it until we dined at Terrapin. Amazing food, wine, and service! We paid for the 4-course tasting menu with the standard wine pairings. It was out of this world! We had the beet salad, pumpkin soup, foie gras (extra on the tasting menu, but worth it), duck pot pie, roast special, fennel-dusted scallops, and 2 of their autumn desserts, which we couldn't even finish because we were stuffed. The food was all cooked perfectly and had great flavor. Presentation was even great! The restaurant also did a fantastic job pairing the wines with the food. No complaints! Service was over the top! This restaurant is THE ONE!! Perfect!

I have heard so much about this restaurant, but have never gone. I had a chance to go and was very excited the staff was outstanding and the restaurant was amazing inside. I was disappointed by the food. I ordered the steak and it did not have much flavor and I felt like a needed an electric knife to cut it. There are numerous places I have been in VA Beach with the same price point where the meal was 10 times better. As a side not make sure and stop at the bank if you want to order a drink, a glass of house wine was $16.00, the bottle was actually $42. Should have order the bottle instead.

We go to Terrapin for the food, ambiance and service. Sometimes the service is a little too efficient - we ordered cocktails before the meal, then ordered the wine to go with the meal. Once the wine was poured and served, the server cleared the table of cocktail glasses even though some of us weren't finished with them (i.e., there was still good stuff left in the glasses). At the very least, the server should ask before removing.

From the moment we arrived at Terrapin, until our departure, the service was impeccable. Two of us attended for dinner, and each of the courses were top quality and taste. When we made reservations, I indicated it was for a birthday celebration, and they made acknowledged the birthday, putting the printed name of the birthday celebrant on the menu, and added a candle to the dessert..just an indicator of the extra special touch the staff adds to the evening.

The decor is nice and the menu is versatile, but execution is not as good as expected from the way restaurant presents itself. Preparation was very inconsistent. The vegetables and the legumes were all al dente - that was not a very palatable preparation. The chicken was almost perfect - the leg was juicy, but the breast was a bit dry. The pot pie top tasted like it was made out of biscuit mix from a supermarket, duck had no flavor and veggies were al dente. Charcuterie was composed on the cheap. Pear cake tasted like supermarket cake and mousse had no pear flavor. The menu was composed for foodies, but the ingredients seemed cheap and preparation was not gourmet.

The menu specials were outstanding and, for a place this good, that's saying something. The chef continues to use unique products in innovative ways and the result is a great dining experience. The service, as always, was exceptional. The wine list, while impressive, has become pricy with nothing under $40. I'm sure there are some good choices that could be added in the $30s or $20s.

My husband and I were visiting from out of town and chose this spot for our anniversary. I mentioned the anniversary when the restaurant called to confirm the reservation, and when we arrived we were charmed to find that they had made us personalized menus with our names and "Happy 7th Anniversary" across the top. It made a special evening even more so. The food was outstanding, and we appreciated that the menu included a choice of portion sizes for many items. Attentive, but not smothering, service topped off our good impression of Terrapin. We will be back if our travels bring us to Virginia Beach again.

We were here for a birthday. I received a personal phone call after I made my online reservation. Brian inquired about possible food allergies or celebrations. We, along with all of the other diners, were treated like VIP's from the moment that we walked into the door. Each employee was charming, knowledgable, and friendly. They answered all questions enthusiastically. The food was phenomenal! The butternut squash bisque was amazing. One of the reasons that this restaurant is so amazing because they tailor their menu to what is fresh and in season. I need to go back soon as everything on the menu looked delicious.

The food was delicious! Small portions but with 4 courses, still go home feeling full. I had the mac and cheese as my second course and scallops as my entree. I would have liked to switch the portion sizes on these two and have had less mac, more scallops. Service was great and waiter took note on everything we said. Great attention to detail.

Husband/I celebrated our anniversary last week. menu had our name/anniversary printed on top -presented to us at the end, wished us happy anniversary upon arrival. We were early for res - no problem. We both had 4 course tasting with wine pairing. I had the tomato soup - delicious and richest deepest flavor - could have had a bit more in the bowl. I had the risotto next, shellfish allergy was easily accommmodated, delicious, again, would have liked a larger portion. I had the duck as main - cooked to perfection and the pot pie had great depth of flavor in the sauce and vegetables. Husband had beet salad, presented beautifully, scallops with mushrooms - perfectly prepared. One of best restaurants in town - will visit again.

Went to Terrapin's for a celebration night, my parents birthdays and their 67th wedding anniversary! The whole night was special. Started with the menu's printed with their names and Happy Anniversary and Happy Birthday, a nice touch. Our waiter Steven was great and so attentive to my parents, he was there when we needed something without being over bearing so we could talk and visit. The food was fabulous, from my first course of beet salad, then rissotto, and my main corse of Char. My dad had the steak and it was really tender and cooked perfectly. My mom had the scallops which she loved. Their desserts came with a candle! Wonderful, special evening.

For our 1st visit to VA Beach, we scoured both the Yelp and Trip Advisor reviews looking for a GOOD restaurant away from the steak and seafood houses. Happy we tried Terrapin and definitely made our visit not only worth it but would have us returning for this and one other restaurant (Peter Chang's -- don't knock it 'til you try it)! Service here was awesome from the moment we walked in (provided us with black cloth napkins than the standard white napkins). Wine selection was provided on a tablet so you can read the descriptions and see labels -- they had my favourite sweet red wine Banyuls! And EVERY dish was sapid and just delightful! Also enjoyed the "create your own" 4-course meal!!!

This was our first visit. Several dishes were excellent, Okra, Shrimp Risotto, Tenderloin was cooked perfect. Lobster bisque was the worse we've ever encountered, Mac & Cheese was inferior. Wine was excellent, which made up for the inconsistencies. Service was top notch. We're going to try it again before we make up our minds.

The selections were very creative and the flavors blended beautifully. One thing I particularly liked was the option for 2 different sized portions on many items. It allowed the opportunity to taste more items or to be able to enjoy a smaller meal, depending on one's appetite. The wine list was also very nice. Overall, an excellent meal and very attentive, quiet service.

The food was very good. Interesting dishes, creatively prepared and served with very fresh, (locally grown or caught), ingredients. Our server Steve was excellent. He was attentive without being intrusive and he was relaxed and knowledgable about the menu. The tables in the dining room were a bit close to each other. The music was too loud and some of the music selections were a bit raucous and not conducive to conversation.

Amazing food, impeccable service, and an overall phenomenal experience! Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist areas of the Virginia Beach oceanfront, this restaurant is a great place to eat and enjoy the company of your dining companions. Don't expect to have your food in front of you in 10 minutes and be out in 30 minutes. This is not that kind of establishment. Instead, come knowing you will enjoy great food prepared from fresh ingredients by talented chefs, being coursed so that you may take your time and have a dining experience, not just a meal. Trust your service staff for great wine recommendations to pair with your meal, and also to treat you like you are the only customers there. Terrapin's is truly a local gem!

This was our second time at Terrapin. The first time made us want to come back, and they did not disappoint this time around. Different selections available on the menu, and they were amazing as well. My fiancé had Tomato and Burrata, Risotto, and the Rockfish. I had the Baby Beets, Fried Green Tomato, and Beef Tenderloin. There was something special in each of these dishes to set it apart from the normal, and we found that we were ordering different things because we wanted to try more of the menu. We both had desert, and all I can say is "save some room" because their choices are amazing. They don't advertise this menu, and to be honest they don't need to. Overall, great food, and very friendly staff. We sat outside, and loved it. Enjoy!

Terrapin was everything I had hoped would come to the Beach. The food, the opportunity to do a tasting, the feel of privacy at the table even those they are standard spaced, I was just deliriously happy. The beef tenderloin was remembered even as we drove back to Washington DC. But the top, the draw for me, was the availability of Lynnhaven oysters. I drove 5 hours just to have that childhood treat. Thank you for making my annual jaunt "back home" a delightful one.

This restaurant was elegant and classy, definitely a nice place for a special occasion, but my wife and I came for our anniversary dinner after being recommended by a co-worker. Food and service was excellent but I hate the new seats all these restaurants are going with to accommodate more people. I wouldn't recommend it for something like an anniversary dinner bc of that...we could hear the couples next to us whole conversation making us feel like we had to whisper...would have appreciated a good booth seat or anything not like the long bench that seats 55 and the single chair across putting everybody so close, almost feeling like it was a double date or couples outing. Would like to eat out with my wife and her alone!

4 course tasting menu offered a variety of flavored and textures. Standouts include the beet salad with yuzu, truffle pasta w/ poached duck egg and duck breast. Desserts are equally delicious but don't hit all the same notes. My peach cobbler was yummy until you reached the bottom. The texture was gummy and heavy but the chocolate Charlotte was intense and luscious. Also find it annoying that most of the first courses charge a supplement for tasting menu. Had a hard time finding something interesting for the first course.

Decided to visit Terrapin after my boss recommended it over Zoe's. One plus is they remembered my special request for Maid of Honor. We all loved our Charcuterie board, filled with cheeses and meats. I had the Salmon, which was a bit on the spicy side and my guests thought that there food was ok (Scallops were a bit too salty for one, and pasta a bit rubbery for the other). The white wine was excellent and our waiter never let our glasses get near empty. I only wish I had room for dessert. Overall, I thought the experience was nice, I would go again, just to try something else on the menu.

To begin, corn/miso soup was excellent, as was the beet salad. Entrees scallops and lobster pasta were also great. For dessert, the blueberry cobbler was delightful. Cocktails were expensive ($10.50 to $16 each.). Overall big meal for two, with drinks, appetizers, entrees, 1 dessert, 2 coffees and tip was $200. The restaurant was very busy on the Saturday night we were there so, for many, the pricing was obviously not an issue. This was a birthday event and everyone we encountered in the restaurant expressed wishes for a Happy Birthday. And a special menu was provided to the celebrant. I heartily recommend this somewhat pricey restaurant.
