Diner Reviews
  • "The food and service were amazing, the best we have found on Virginia Beach. My wife and I each had the tasting plate. This gave us a chance to try eight different dishes. All were wonderful! The lobster pasta and the scallops were superb."

  • "Very enjoyable dinner, choices are limited to 6 selections and one special, but the two we had were done to perfection...wine selection is also limited, beats looking thru a book of 500 wines."

  • "Food excellent. Service marginal Far below what prices dictate. Restaurant lacked warmth. As I was leaving waiter gave me a menu with my name almost as an afterthought. Wow.. Waiter seemed too busy to handle the almost empty restaurant."

  • "First time customers and having read the reviews was excited to try it out. Quite simply it was one of the best meals I have ever experienced. We did the 4 course menu with wine pairings and thee wasn't a bite that wasn't fabulous. My companion nearly passed out when she tastes the fried green tomatoes. Would highly recommend to anyone without hesitation. A True gem at the beach."

  • "Terrapin was everything I had hoped would come to the Beach. The food, the opportunity to do a tasting, the feel of privacy at the table even those they are standard spaced, I was just deliriously happy. The beef tenderloin was remembered even as we drove back to Washington DC. But the top, the draw for me, was the availability of Lynnhaven oysters. I drove 5 hours just to have that childhood treat. Thank you for making my annual jaunt "back home" a delightful one."

  • "This restaurant was elegant and classy, definitely a nice place for a special occasion, but my wife and I came for our anniversary dinner after being recommended by a co-worker. Food and service was excellent but I hate the new seats all these restaurants are going with to accommodate more people. I wouldn't recommend it for something like an anniversary dinner bc of that...we could hear the couples next to us whole conversation making us feel like we had to whisper...would have appreciated a good booth seat or anything not like the long bench that seats 55 and the single chair across putting everybody so close, almost feeling like it was a double date or couples outing. Would like to eat out with my wife and her alone!"

  • "One of the best dinners we've ever had! It's a must for a special occasion. My husband and I went for our anniversary and really enjoyed the dinner experience with the wine pairings. The only thing I didn't care for was that it was a bit loud but I guess that is to be expected since the restaurant only accommodates 50 people inside."

  • "Heard about this restaurant many times as being a great place to dine. I was not disappointed. Look forward to going here again."

  • "We wanted a NYC style restaurant in VA beach and found this place. Food was unbelievable especially the oyster dip and the duck breast, pairing of the wine to the food was such a great idea. would definitely go back. Brian Williams was awesome in the wine pairing!"

  • "4 course tasting menu offered a variety of flavored and textures. Standouts include the beet salad with yuzu, truffle pasta w/ poached duck egg and duck breast. Desserts are equally delicious but don't hit all the same notes. My peach cobbler was yummy until you reached the bottom. The texture was gummy and heavy but the chocolate Charlotte was intense and luscious. Also find it annoying that most of the first courses charge a supplement for tasting menu. Had a hard time finding something interesting for the first course."

  • "As a first time diner, I found the experience most enjoyable. It was a treat for the palate and the service was impeccable. From the moment we were seated we knew we were in for a treat. It was one of the best anniversary diners yet."

  • "Decided to visit Terrapin after my boss recommended it over Zoe's. One plus is they remembered my special request for Maid of Honor. We all loved our Charcuterie board, filled with cheeses and meats. I had the Salmon, which was a bit on the spicy side and my guests thought that there food was ok (Scallops were a bit too salty for one, and pasta a bit rubbery for the other). The white wine was excellent and our waiter never let our glasses get near empty. I only wish I had room for dessert. Overall, I thought the experience was nice, I would go again, just to try something else on the menu."

  • "We had the four course meal with wine pairings which was a superb dining experience in every way - food, service, timing, presentation."

  • "My husband and I celebrated our 7 year wedding anniversary here and could not have been more pleased. We booked our table a few nights in advance and indicated that it was our anniversary. When we were seated, we were given personalized menus, making the night even more special. Our server was AMAZING. He was very helpful and friendly. He explained everything on the menu to us and made the food sound perfect. The food was incredible. My husband and I selected the 4 course option and shared, making it essentially 8 courses. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "To begin, corn/miso soup was excellent, as was the beet salad. Entrees scallops and lobster pasta were also great. For dessert, the blueberry cobbler was delightful. Cocktails were expensive ($10.50 to $16 each.). Overall big meal for two, with drinks, appetizers, entrees, 1 dessert, 2 coffees and tip was $200. The restaurant was very busy on the Saturday night we were there so, for many, the pricing was obviously not an issue. This was a birthday event and everyone we encountered in the restaurant expressed wishes for a Happy Birthday. And a special menu was provided to the celebrant. I heartily recommend this somewhat pricey restaurant."

  • "Very charming indeed. They pay attention to everything down to the turtle shaped butter for your bread. The four course meal is a steal at the price they ask and it makes a country boy like me proud to know that their produce is local. Their respectable wine list is as good as the iPad you get to choose from."

  • "I took my girlfriend here for her birthday dinner. Terrapin called a few days ahead of the reservation to confirm and asked if there was a special occasion. I told them about Ashley's birthday. Upon arrival, the host, waiter, and custom menu all said "Happy Birthday Ashley". It was a great personal touch on top of great food and service. We will definitely return."

  • "Everyone's meal was delicious. I had scallops and although a tab salty, I excepted that as they were laid on a mushroom medley. Truffle mac was amazing and I could have ordered two of those and been happy. My girlfriends had the duck and salmon and no one had a single negative comment or leftovers."

  • "It was our first time dining at Terrapin. I had asked via open table if they could give us their best table and they called me during the day to ask if they could do anything else. They gave us an awesome table outside on a beautiful night and we had an excellent meal. Will definitely be back."

  • "This is by far the best food at Virginia Beach. Notable attention to detail with in-house made cheeses and inclusion of locally sourced meats, seafood and vegetables. Everything from cocktails through the dessert course was excellent and impeccably served."

  • "I communicated with the restaurant that this was our 20th Anniversary and I would like a nice table. They had what I considered the best table in the place for us when we arrived. They had printed a special copy of their menu with "Happy Anniversary to Tom and Alicia on their 2oth Wedding Anniversary" at the top of the menu. The waiter was EXTREMELY knowledgeable of the food and the specific recommended wine to go with each course. We chose the four Course Meal with wine pairing, and I recommend this choice to others. We felt very special, and as husband I scored Major points with my wife on this restaurant choice."

  • "I rencently ate an evening meal with my wife and a close friend here on a Sunday night. We dined for two and one half hours. Our server (Shannon) provided excellent service, answered questions and guided through our courses. An extremely pleasant dining occasion. Kudos to the staff"

  • "Terrapin is one of our favorite, if not our most favorite, fine dining spots in Virginia Beach. The choice of local purveyors always ensures high quality and the chef's skills provide the perfect demonstration. After starters of corn gazpacho, fried green tomatoes, and panzanella, we dined on perfectly prepared scallops, lobster mac and cheese, and a tenderloin filet of beef. Execution was outstanding, although the demi-glace on the tenderloin did subdue what appeared to be an otherwise perfectly seared portion of tenderloin. Dessert did not disappoint. The chocolate charlotte presentation provided both light and dense textures as well as a range of flavors--the only suggestion would be an additional chocolate dessert other than...pudding."

  • "My wife and I prefer Terrapin for special occasion dinners. It's a 40+mile drive to get there but they never disappoint. Service is very attentive and friendly, the food is incomparable in this area. We will keep coming back."

  • "This is without a doubt the best restaurant in Virginia Beach. Others come close, but they cannot reach the perfection demonstrated by the Terrapin night after night. Every bite was as good as it could be. Wait staff adds the cherry to the sundae!!!"

  • "Annually the Speaking Consulting Network Executive Committee meets in Virginia Beach where founder of SCN lives. We celebrate the past year's success with a nice local dinner in a top of the line restaurant. Terrapin co owner, Rodney Eienhorn is the son of a dentist, and SCN is a group of dental speakers, consultants and authors.....so I chose it on previous reviews and the dental connection. We were all four thriled with the service of Michael, the fabulously prepared food, wine and overall evening."

  • "My husband and I had a great meal. We were impressed by the friendly staff and helpful waiter. Nice tasting menu featuring local farm produce. Their duck entree was one of the best duck breasts I've ever had...large portion too. Don't miss the desserts! We cannot wait to come back!"

  • "Went to terrapin a year ago and was blown away by both food and service, returned recently and the food was still excellent but service has noticeably slipped. I had my kids this time, 9 and 11, did not get the attention that was expected from a restaurant of this caliber."

  • "This was a first class dining experience. Each course was better than the last. We had also brought our 6 year old daughter with us and although it doesn't seem like they cater to children, she had a great time, tried all the food and enjoyed it. I suggest the tasting menu...lots of choices...you'll love it."

  • "We choose this restaurant based on its Open Table review and we weren't disappointed. We had the Tasting Sample menu with wine pairings and loved everything presented. Eating here would be one of the main reasons we would return to Viginia Beach."

  • "We celebrated our first wedding anniversary here, and loved the locally-sourced food, wines, and attentive service. We opted for the tasting menu with wine pairings, and thoroughly enjoyed Chris' recommendations. Our only (small) quibble was having a rather loud couple seated right next to us, when there were several empty tables in the restaurant on that Sunday night. Maybe they were reserved by no-shows... We will come back next time we stay in the area."

  • "My wife and I dine at Terrapin for special occasions; last time was several years ago for our anniversary. This dinner was for our anniversary as well. Wonderful service. Attention to detail that one rarely sees these days. Food is delicious and unique as are the cocktails. Consistent quality over time, which again one rarely sees these days. Really can't recommend Terrapin enough for special occasions."

  • "I have been to many 4 and 5 star restaurants and I have to say I wasn't as happy with this restaurant as I would have liked. It was very cold in the restaurant which made the dining experience uncomfortable. There were other tables around me where you could visibly see the guests were cold as well. The service was great. Wonderful nice and inviting staff. The mixed drinks were excellent. The food was good but was not blown away. There was a wait in between the courses. I would give this place another try cause the food was good and the decor was wonderful."

  • "The service was very good, the waiter was knowledgeable and he gave us good attention. We had the charcuterie/cheese board and oysters and those we enjoyed, so I rated the food good but not more. The entrees disappointed us. My date had the bouillabaise which came with hardly any liquid, it was basically a bowl of mussels, with 1 clam and 1 shrimp. There was a piece of toast on the side, but no broth to go with it. I had the salmon, which was dry and hard on top, as though it had been sitting around for awhile. As for the ambiance, we were seated along a bench with other tables for two. The tables were so close together that the waiter's backside bumped my arm when the adjacent tables were served....and was not a view that I enjoyed."

  • "Being a foodie and professional cook, I will be the first to admit that I am hard to please, and I can honestly say that everything about our recent dinner at Terrapin was outstanding. Our server was friendly and extremely knowledgeable, without being intrusive. Every course was delicious and the presentation was lovely. I would highly reccomend a visit to Terrapin."

  • "We visited for our anniversary and they went out of their way to print a menu that said "Happy Anniversary" to us and we got well wishes at every turn. We did the four course tasting menu. The beet salad as well as the kale salad were both very good. Skip the truffle pasta, but definitely get the Gnudi which was the highlight of the food. We both branded out for our entree and got dishes that we wouldn't normally order. That being said I would skip the lobster pasta, but the scallops were excellent. For dessert the lemon zen was great, and the chocolate dish was good. Beer selection left a little to be desired. Overall a great experience."
