Diner Reviews
  • "two fish entrees (striped bass & ahi tuna) were excellent, cocktails well done and interesting, little extras (gougeres/bread basket), long list of appetizers & tapas."

  • "Once again I was very happy with the food and service at Terrapin. This is my 5th time dining at Terrapin and each time has been a great experience. The entire staff is pleasant and helpful. The pace of the service makes it perfect for any celebration, there is ample time for talking and relaxing. And the food is just really good."

  • "We made a same day reservation at Terrapin when our travels took us to Rhinebeck late in the day, and although we ate late and therefore lightly, whatever we had was terrific! The tapas oyster shooters and crispy artichokes were excellent, as was the mezuna salad and the fig/brie/shallot quesadilla. And the winner was the bread basket that had gougeres and bread as it should be served--crispy crust and chewy inside! We will return to sample more from the menu!"

  • "We enjoyed our anniversary dinner at Terrapin. We started out by sharing the duck quesadilla. The mango/avocado salsa paired with it rounded out the dish nicely. Our meals were the striped bass and the double cut pork chop. That was the biggest chop I have seen served in a restaurant. My husband was well pleased with that choice and when I tasted it, I totally understood. The meat was moist and tender and had the best flavor!!! My bass had a crispy skin that made the dish memorable. This was our first visit to Terrapin, but not our last."

  • "We've been to Terrapin on several occasions and have never been disappointed. The food is delicious and cooked to perfection. I had the filet mignon which was served with 2 different sauces and my husband had the hangar steak, also served with 2 different sauces. My friend had the double cut pork chop which could have easily fed 2 people. It was at least 3 inches high, no lie!The salads and appetizers were also delicious. Our waiter was great. His recommendations were spot on, including what wine to order with each dish. Nice restaurant for a romantic evening or someplace to impress friends. Highly recommend."

  • "The food is excellent. Some of the best in the area - WITHOUT QUESTION. The restaurant (not bistro) could use a refresh. Carpets are old. Dust has accumulated and we were pestered by flies. If they are going to remain relevant, they will need to pay some attention."

  • "I have eaten here many times. Terrapin is wonderful and innovative with their menu. I have never had a bad meal or bad service."

  • "My pre-dinner cocktail, the Hot & Dirty (Olive juice and tobasco) was awesome. Dinner was lovely and the service was top notch."

  • "Terrapin is our favorite out-of-town restaurant. Eating there always makes me wish that I lived in the Hudson Valley and could be a regular. What especially appeals to me is the innovative menu. What amazes me is that, in spite of some daring moves on the part of the chef, he always hits the bulls eye. The restaurant is in an old church, which lends an air of dignity, but the crowd is lively so, on balance, it is a fun place and just right for special occasions"

  • "Dining here outdoors, any evening, is romantic and sensory. We paid our second visit in 3 nights, had a light bite & sat under umbrellas, sparkling lights & lush green trees. The service is consistently quick & bright even though we did not get full dinners. We'll be back! My only regret is that the 200 points I would have received for booking tonight were not awarded because I was locked out of my account only 2 nights right after having eaten here!! I was trying to check my account & could not remember my password and was locked out! We ate again tonight at Terrapin anyway & discovered that their computer had been down; an OT reservation would have been impossible!! I'd appreciate account access & 200 pts."

  • "Food was very well prepared and tasty. Tables tight enough that flight of beers almost ended up in my husband's lab when table next to us got up. Were placed near kitchen entrance and screen near door kept getting pushed into our table. Was husband's birthday, they were told, but did not do anything about it. Would not recommend or go back unless needed place for large group."

  • "We return often for all the reasons one dines out. The food is special as is the bar and the waitstaff. And you can be heard across the table at a normal conversational level. Lovely."

  • "The food is inventive and always delicious. Our server, Patrick ,was informative and delightful which only adds to a very pleasant dinner."

  • "The food here was wonderful. There were six of us all ordering different entrees and we all loved our meals! The server was nice but got one order wrong, forgot to fill water glass & took forever to bring drink replacements. He also gave us our check & then took it back to correct the incorrect item he had placed. For the dollar difference on an almost $300 check and considering I had to wait for my meal he really should have taken the meal off completely. That & the poor service left a bad taste in my mouth after a wonderful meal."

  • "Small plates terrific as usual, service a bit off this time. "

  • "Our first time at Terrapin. Located in an old church, our waiter was friendly and well versed in the menu leading us toward great choices. The wine he suggested in lieu of our first choice was perfect. Our appetizer was excellent as well as each entree. Creative chef with unusual flavor pairings that work so well. A must try. "

  • "Appetizers, main course, dessert - all terrific. The food, as always, was great. What made this experience outstanding was our server. My wife is gluten free, and once we made our server aware of this, his attention to this detail made her night. Without asking, gluten free bread was brought to the table. He made dinner suggestions and suggested a terrific gluten free desert - house made gluten free chocolate chip cookie sandwich with ice cream. The cookies were great - if we didn't know they were gluten free we would not have suspected! We will definitely be back soon!"

  • "Last year when we attended the Country Living Fair, we could not get in, so I got reservations on-line this year. Our waitress Michelle was terrific! The young gentleman kept my water filled. The food was amazing! We'll be back next year when we come to NY"

  • "My wife and I enjoyed an anniversary dinner in the dinning area. We have gone here previous for lunch, eating outside or the bar area. I had Peking duck and my wife had 2 appetizers ( tuna, prawn) and a tapas (artichoke) selection. Food was fabulous!"

  • "We have been dining here for years and have NEVER received anything less than perfectly prepared and fresh food ! It is pricy but you are getting well prepared local food when possible, you can't go wrong with that ."

  • "Met up with two good friends - a great 1/2 way between Riverdale, NY and Easthampton, Mass. A day in Rhinebeck/Red Hook followed by a wonderful meal at Terrapin - enjoyed every dish, some were more wonderful than others, e.g. Hanger Steak with fries was a favorite. Atmosphere and decor are delightful, warm. Servers were highly professional, very knowledgeable about the wines and food, in general. Would definitely go again."

  • "We read mixed reviews, but decided to try anyway. In a word "tired" --both the menu and the ambience. It definitely needs a quality check. The duck was flavorless; the quesadillas' filling of goat cheese and figs was a nice combination but there were too many figs and the tortilla was hard; the mini lamb chop and mini slider were tasty, but really, really mini for $5 each. "

  • "it was quite pricy for what it was. the entree portions were quite sizable though, but my entree (short ribs) was more like a deconstructed onion soup and the temperature of the dish varied wildly. i also had the calamari, duck quesadilla, and lamb chops, all which were served with too-sweet sauces. "

  • "Superb food. Asparagus and ramp soup a hit. Bartender knows how to make a good martini."
    Dined on 5/24/2014
  • "Everything here is fresh and delicious...and creative without being weird. Asparagus soup with ramps...and a Parmesan crust! Gentle , tasty, not overly asparagus OR ramp. And then there is josh kroner's trademark tuna, from when he started out near Crafts People...still my favorite dish. Ever. well..possibly competing with his goat cheese wontons...both have that melt in the mouth awesomely luxurious feel. mixed drinks are perfect. Sunday nights are quiet...and they didn't hover while we had...at our request..a leisurely 3 hour anniversary meal. Others came and went during that time, so they pay attention to what the customer wants. Yay!"

  • "This evening was as delightful as we can remember. Wonderful food in a comfortable ambiance where conversation could be heard! Also need to say that the staff was very professional and friendly. The best."

  • "Food is always prepared exceptionally well. Attention to customers by wait staff needs improvement, especially younger supplementary wait staff. They overlook a lot that could be exceptional service!"

  • "We absolutely loved the Mother's Day lunch. We tried 4 different appetizers and split amongst us. All was wonderful. Thank you!"

  • "My husband and I were visiting Woodstock for our anniversary, which fell on a monday evening. We were happy to see that Terrapin was open and came over hungry after a hike for an early dinner. We both had a delicious ramp soup and I had the cod fish which was cooked incredibly well with a crispy skin like no other. We were almost the only people in the restaurant so had a quiet impressive meal followed by a stroll over to Upstate Films. Great night in Rhinebeck."
    Dined on 5/5/2014
  • "The appetizers were wonderful but the entrees, were just okay. Sit in the bar section if you can stand to be near a TV and lots of people. The food will be similar and less $$ and really, not worth the $$."
    Dined on 5/2/2014
  • "The entree (wild salmon with black garlic) was absolutely delicious. The dessert poses a problem - the warm berry cake with ice cream is so good, I am hard-pressed to order anything else!"

  • "Modern aminity, transcending back to a more simple time. With high ceiling, and beams in a very outstanding atmosphere Tables spaced apart for privacy, with various levels to sit in so to give clients a sense of a place of dignity. Our waiter was very gracious, kind and experienced. Food served . Chicken needed more seasoning, a drizzle of Olive Oil. "

  • "Went on a Monday night with a reservation. Really didn't need one since they weren't too busy. My wife had the littlenecks on the half shell, they were about the size of a dollar coin and were wonderful. I had the veggie Saimen soup that was really good. I even commented to the waiter that it was so nice to get a "hot" bowl of soup in a restaurant. I went on to have the T bone steak. for dry aged it wasn't really anything special, it was cooked correctly but for the same price you would pay at Mortons I expected a better piece of meat. My wife has the Striped Bass which was excellent. Terrapin is consistently good although a bit on the pricey side. $ 140.00 before tip. I had 2 beers and the wife had 3 glasses of wine."

  • "My wife and I were visiting Rhinebeck and saw online that the Terrapin restaurant was highly recommend. When we arrived at the restaurant, I noticed that the staff was very friendly and very knowledgeable about the food and wine on their menu. The food was fantastic and has something for everyone. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone."

  • "This was my second time eating at Terrapin and it lived up to the very high expectations formed by the first visit. In fact, it surpassed them - due largely to the exceptional service. The food was, as anticipated, excellent."
