This was the only time that I have ever felt that my experience at Terrapin was less than perfect. Worse, my experience with a date at Terrapin was terrible. We were invaded by nats. My glass of wine came late enough that I almost refused it. And my NY strip steak was almost un-cut-able given its fat content. And my date who said she’d want cheese, thinking it would be applied when she could see it, found that it was burried in cheese before it got to the table,

Stopped in Rhinebeck for one night and found this gem! Sat outside since there was a rehearsal dinner inside, so a bit noisy with truck traffic. Food was terrific.

It was SO HOT and stuffy in this restaurant, we did not order desserts or another round of drinks, we had to get out of there. And on top of it service was a little slow so we had to be there in the heat even longer.

A great find on a trip from Vermont to New Jersey. Lovely restaurant with an unusual and unusually-good menu, service, and food. The appetizers and tapas offerings were creative and very good. They were also kind to our Bernese Mountain Dog and have two areas where dogs can accompany diners. There was lots of shade. Service was particularly good, efficient, and helpful. All suggestions were excellent. We wish we lived closer to this restaurant. We would be regulars for sure.

The food and service were awful. The server didn’t even notice that half of our food was untouched.

FAQs

Warm, charming and lively, Terrapin’s setting in a converted church gives it unique character, with warm decor, high ceilings and intimate lighting. Guests describe it as cozy and romantic for special occasions, though it can get noisy when full. Staff and attentive service add to the welcoming atmosphere.

Yes, Terrapin operates for many holidays and special events (guests report dining on NYE, Christmas Eve and Mother’s Day with special prix-fixe menus). Holiday hours or special menus can vary, so call ahead or check the restaurant’s announcements for holiday-specific service and reservations.

Portions tend to be generous for full entrees and reasonably sized for tapas. Many guests note hearty, full-sized entrees (steak, salmon, short ribs) and say the restaurant offers good value; tapas and small plates are intentionally smaller for sharing. If you want a hearty meal, order an entree; if you’d like to taste a lot, try several tapas plus a main.

Midweek (Tuesday–Thursday) is often the best choice for a quieter, more relaxed experience. Guests frequently report that weekday evenings are calmer while weekends and holiday nights are lively and busier, so pick a weekday if you want lower noise and faster service.

Busiest: weekend evenings, holidays and special-event nights (NYE, Mother’s Day, Rhinebeck Fair). Quietest: midweek nights and early dinner hours. If you prefer a calm meal, aim for weekdays or the early seating and reserve for weekends or holidays.

Smart casual. Guests and the owner note a comfortable yet polished atmosphere, think neat, casual attire suitable for a fine-dining setting in Rhinebeck.

For a quieter experience, go midweek or for an earlier dinner, guests report weekday and early-evening visits are calmer. Weekends, holidays and special-event nights (NYE, Mother’s Day, Rhinebeck Fair) can be lively and busy, so make reservations for peak nights.

Yes, Terrapin has outdoor seating including a front patio, back patio and a seasonal pavilion. Guests frequently enjoy porch or patio dining (dog-friendly on the patio in several cases). Note that patio and bistro seating are typically first-come, first-served while dining-room dinner requires a reservation.

Yes, Terrapin is a popular choice for date night. Guests frequently praise the romantic, converted-church dining room, intimate lighting, attentive service and a well-curated wine & cocktail program. The menu offers shareable tapas and full entrees (duck quesadilla, mushroom soup, short ribs, seafood) that work well for a special evening. For a quieter experience, consider an early weeknight reservation or the pavilion when available. Reservations are recommended for dinner.

Yes, the staff frequently accommodates special requests like birthday surprises, dietary needs and seating preferences. Guests describe successful surprise parties and allergy accommodations. Note that private-party bookings are not offered, so for large or specific set-ups call ahead to discuss the best options.

Yes for families, Terrapin welcomes families and many guests report bringing children for birthdays and family dinners; the restaurant even offers a Kids Menu.
