A word from Terramia
A true gem among all those rhinestones in the North End, this rustic but cozy trattoria with stucco walls and beamed ceilings specializes in creative interpretations of Italian classics.
Behind Terramia's pane-windowed storefront on Salem Street is a busy trattoria decked out in linens, candlelight and paintings of the Italian countryside. Like the cuisine here, the atmosphere is elegant yet understated. Since opening in 1993, Terramia has aimed to convince North End diners that there was always more to Italian food than red sauce. Over the Years, the inventive and beloved restaurant has done a great deal of convincing. You'll find creative interpretations of seasonally-based classics here.
The ever-changing menu incorporates seasonal vegetables and the catch of the day. Homemade pasta dishes feature unconventional preparation styles--ravioli is served open-faced, with scallops, shrimp and zucchini, in a lobster mascarpone sauce.

Diner Reviews
  • "Great location, small and friendly. The artichoke appetizer was a little over cooked and dry, but the duck was perfect. Everything else was great, three choices for dessert, the tiramisu was very good and enough for 3 of us."

  • "My husband and I didn't want to go to our regular spot in the North End of Boston so we decided to try Terramia. The food is prepared to order. Our appetizers were roasted artichokes and a cheese plate. Both were very delicious. When we were in Italy last year, we loved the roasted artichokes and found that our palates brought us back to that memory. Then we split the Pasta Bolognese. I believe it's one of their signature dishes. The special fish of the night was Chilean Sea Bass and it was prepared perfectly. My husband ordered the linguini and clams and wishes it was not like a soup but more of a sauce but still very good. We definitely will dine here again."

  • "My son and I and his mother-in-law from out of town, came here to dinner on a recommendation from a friend of mine. We were seated immediately, although we were 40 minutes early, and the service was prompt and unobtrusive, which allowed us to catch up. Dinner was superb. I started with the lobster fritters, which were deep fried, but somehow still tasted healthy. Followed that with open-face ravioli which didn't skimp on the shrimp and scallops."

  • "We've been dining at Terramia for at least 10 years and never been disappointed. Our favorite dishes are Open Face ravioli and Bolognese. Burrata cheese as a starter is very fresh and light. Service was fast, friendly and knowledgeable. Of course, we will return :)"

  • "This place was amazing from the friendly hostess at the door the polite and attentive waiter. Food was to die for (mouths watering just thinking of it), We had the Kobe carpaccio and crispy artichokes "amazing". There signature pasta dish for mid course which is an open face style ravioli filled with shrimp and scallops in a lobster marscapone Wow !! A Homerun !! , Bass special with sweet corn and chard leek risotto , veal chop which was the best I've ever had EVER!! And we did have enough room for the Warm Flourless Choc Torte super chocolaty and delicious. Will Definitly recommend to others and 100% will be back. Make a reservation cause this place is small and gets packed"

  • "Have been to Terramia perhaps 25 times. This night, not so hot. 2 meals were returned. Another guest is vegan/gluten free, and I specifically picked Terramia for a good rating in this area. Disappointed with choices available, and lack of flexibility of kitchen staff."

  • "Had a very good dining experience while in NYC on a family vacation earlier this month. The food was delicious and the drinks were outstanding. The meal was quite expensive for the portion sizes but the quality of the food was top notch."

  • "This place was recommended to us and we tried it. It was ok/ good. I say this because compared to the dozens of other italian restaurants in the north end of Boston this doesn't quite hold the same candle with ambiance and selection. Don't get me wrong, it's not bad just not to the level of other italian eaterys we have visited here over the past 8 years. My dish which was opened face raviolas with shrimp and scallops was very ingenious and the sauce was very good but the shell fish was over cooked to dryness. The menu had good recipes but very limited selection. Our waiter Andy was excellant, prompt and attentive with a british accent. That's different for being in the predominantly italian north end."

  • "A wonderful culinary experience for foodies. Very small, intimate setting. The waiters and maitre'd were constantly in motion and were extremely friendly, polite, and helpful. The entire meal was excellent in appearance, quality of ingredients, of course, taste. We had oysters and antipasto to begin. Bucatini alla Amatriciana and Raviolone Aperto were our main dishes (both with fresh, homemade pasta). The tiramisu and the chocolate torte are both a 'must have' desert. We were able to chat with the chef at the end of our meal - a real treat. The whole area is a major tourist attraction; yet sitting in this restaurant made you feel as though you were away from 'the maddening crowd'. This is what a restaurant in the North End should be."

  • "This restaurant was recommended to me and I was looking forward to it. We were very disappointed. The waiters were not very friendly and our food was very bland. The appetizer was good, but both our entrees were very bland to the point I hardly ate mine. Did this restaurant perhaps change chefs?"

  • "For my anniversary, I made a reservation at Terramia for 8pm (we arrived on time) but we did not get sat until 8:30. There is no where to wait inside, so on a brisk night...bring a jacket. Once we finally sat down, it was at a table with another couple already eating at it. Not exactly the intimate anniversary setting I had envisioned, but if it's not crowded you're not in the North End, so we stayed. When the lobster fritter appetizer hit the table... I forgot all about the chilly wait and cramped table... It was different and amazing. I ordered a vegan pasta dish of my own creation; they were happy to oblige. Joe ordered the Gorgonzola ravioli. We both LOVED our dinners, the wine selection, and the Tiramisu! "

  • "We loved this cute, small restaurant in the heart of a busy neighborhood! An amazing meal and very well-informed, caring wait staff. It was like going to someone's home for dinner, who just happened to be an amazing cook! Highly recommend. "

  • "I had heard good things about this place but the fact that it wasn't crowded like other local spots and the food tasted like it was all handmade from scratch, I'm glad we didn't go to any of the more "popular" places."

  • "I've been going to Terramia for years, at least 4 times a year when we come to Boston..I has been our favorite in the North End. This time we sensed a bit of a change...they were trying to be a little more contemporary with some of the dishes.Fine...The simple salad had a little grapefruit in the vinaigrette which was great. We ordered the Spaghetti Amatriciana ,which we've had many times there and in Italy,....for some reason they added cream or mascarpone....when you alter the classics you should let us know.....other than that it was excellent..Our waiter Gabrielle, was,as always gracious and attentive...."

  • "Been coming from southern NH to Terramia now for more than 20 years for various occasions, both special and ordinary. In that time, we've sent scores of friends as well in search of a superb meal off the beaten track of the North End's more traditional scene. In all that time it has never disappointed. In city of excellent restaurants, Terramia remains a standard. If you come to these reviews to find a venue where you'll be assured of a memorable, creatively crafted meal, and no underwhelmed "diner's regret", you need look no further. On this visit, the black cod chef's special, barbabietole & burrata (a beet salad antipasti), and Andy, our UK born server (especially delightful surprise in an Italian neighborhood) we're the stars."

  • "After all the hype about how good this restaurant was, we were disappointed in the food. My wife ordered the Gnocchi dish and it was rather bland, not nearly as good as you could make at home with minimal effort. I had the lamb rib special. The meat was cooked well, but the sauce/glaze on the lamb overwhelmed the taste of the lamb itself. The dining area was small and crammed with tables eliminating any chance for quiet dinner for two. The back of my chair was literally touching the back of the patron's chair behind me. If he moved, I felt it. The service was friendly and helpful. In summary, I've had much better (and cheaper) dinners at chain Italian restaurants such as The Olive Garden. Would not go back again."

  • "Was here the other night ha lamb ribs for the first time and they were crazy good! And the pasta special my wife had with figs and crispy proscuttio and shaved truffle cheese was umami and super delicious. Will def be back and recommend to others. Small place but its worth it "

  • "Despite positive publicity for its innovation and distinctiveness amongst the various North End Italian joints, this place offered little in the way of modern plating or food ideas. And the wine list was quite simple, with big-brand California next to a short selection of regional Italian mediocrities. Somehow I was expecting more truly southern-Italian focus, and parallel wines. Not so much. Waiter Andy's service was kind and accommodating in his Irish-charm way, although the hostess was clearly apathetic and disengaged. No sense of proprietary interest was present. The lines out the door were at restaurants across the street, but not here--now I know why."

  • "I make it a point to come to Terramia whenever I'm in Boston. The food is outstanding. Fresh ingredients are used in distinctive combinations for a delicious spin on your italian favorites. Be prepared for a possible wait even with reservations. The restaurant is tiny and most diners linger over their meals to enjoy every bite. Don't complain, it's definitely worth the wait. There is no bar, but they'll take your cell phone and contact you when your table is ready if you want to grab a drink nearby."

  • "Service was great, very friendly & on point with recomadations on food and wine. Had a 32 rib eye special with black truffle Foie gras butter, pure heaven. Everyone I'm my family have no clue what they got but they loved all of it. "Still in steak-coma" . Will be back with a date next time. "

  • "Place is pretty good. Huge wine list, a ton of appetizers that in retrospect I wish I had tried. My gnocchi was just ok (meatballs that it came with were reeeeally good), but my girl's ravioli - a special that night was even better. The price wasn't great. I spent a hundred and twenty bucks for 2 entrees a bottle of wine ($45) and three oysters. I guess that's around what you expect to pay but I've eaten better for cheaper. Kind of a weird bathroom situation too (one unisex, place definitely used to be an apt/small business) I liked it my girl didn't. All this said the "ambiance" is pretty "romantic" (*kills self*)...but honestly this is the type of place billy was talking about in scenes from an Italian restaurant. She loved it so."
