A word from Terramia
A true gem among all those rhinestones in the North End, this rustic but cozy trattoria with stucco walls and beamed ceilings specializes in creative interpretations of Italian classics.
Behind Terramia's pane-windowed storefront on Salem Street is a busy trattoria decked out in linens, candlelight and paintings of the Italian countryside. Like the cuisine here, the atmosphere is elegant yet understated. Since opening in 1993, Terramia has aimed to convince North End diners that there was always more to Italian food than red sauce. Over the Years, the inventive and beloved restaurant has done a great deal of convincing. You'll find creative interpretations of seasonally-based classics here.
The ever-changing menu incorporates seasonal vegetables and the catch of the day. Homemade pasta dishes feature unconventional preparation styles--ravioli is served open-faced, with scallops, shrimp and zucchini, in a lobster mascarpone sauce.

  • "This place is fantastic from soup to nuts, literally. The guanciale and chic pea soup was amazing , had the Beet salad with candied pecans , baby kale and a citrus dressing my wife loved it !! We Had the gnocchi sorrentina that was on RW menu and they just made it bigger for me , can't express how good there gnocchi is. I got the veal chop and my wife got the filet both were super flavorful and very beautifully plated. We had there cannoli and expresso to finish it off and it did that just right . We had a Borolo that was absolutely amazing , and there house Pinot to start both were recommendations from the server and he hit a home run with them. Foods the best I've had in a Long time, already planning another trip with friends."

  • "We had dinner there Saturday night. Table was placed in the server area, next to the cash register. Servers were complaining all night about other diners and making rude remarks about customer orders and meal times. Food was just above tepid in temperature. The lobster fritters needed salt. The server sighed when we told him we were thinking about getting dessert."

  • "We went during Restaurant Week and had the 3-course prix-fix meal. We both had the home made ravioli appetizers which were as good as any ravioli we've tasted. My wife had the arctic char and I had the chicken and both were excellent. For dessert she had tiramisou and I had the cannoli. Again, excellent. The only reason we didn't give this place five-stars is because the tables are right next to each other and it's not a place to dine when you want to relax and spend a few hours in a restaurant."

  • "Don't go out to eat much but when I do I like it to be special and worth it , and this place is so worth it. Had the oysters of the day with a lemoncello mingnotte ! Amazing super polished. Had the short rib rissotto with ramp greens and there porchetta, both dishes were a homerun. Only complaint if there is one place is a little small but makes up in food and wine ! This is a must eat !"

Mushroom ravioli was too sweet, and potato gnocchi with marinara was a bit on the salty side. Waiter was very hyper and did not contribute to a relaxed atmosphere. Felt really rushed. Best thing about it was the low noise level."

  • "Wonderful and cozy restaurant located on Salem Street in the North End. we arrived early for a 6:30 reservation, and by 6:45 the small dining room was full. Low noise level encouraged an intimate dining experience... low conversation level across the table, no need to talk loudly. Food was wonderful. The fixed price menu offered choices for appetizer, main course and dessert. Great wine list. Certain to return again...."

  • "I'm surprised I haven't written a review of this place yet. It's one of my favorite on the North End. I keep forgetting how quaint and friendly the service is. I brought a small group of 5 which is considered a large group to them. They participate in restaurant week and keep me posted on their special offerings through their email. I had a special Risotto with Seafood dish. One of our customers had the tenderloin which he said was one of the best he'd ever had. The theme here is Italian and the food is quite remarkable. Service was excellent. The bread comes with a hummus type spread if you don't want butter. I'm not sure if they offer any alcohol besides beer and wine. I saw they did have some cordials. My dessert was a Limoncello."

  • "When my friend and I come to Boston, we make it a point to visit Terramia. The first few times, the food was excellent and the service matched. This time, the food was as good as always, but the service was very brusque and our three courses were whipped out in record time - we were in and out in 45 minutes, which was a bit fast for a special birthday meal. The cherry on top was that I had requested an acknowledgement of my friend's birthday (something that had previously been done with pleasure) and got nary a kind word from the waiter. Disappointing."

  • "Met friends from out of town and had to make a last minute reservation for a Saturday night. Was worried that only mediocre places would still be available. Terramia is small, only about a dozen tables, so it's difficult to time turnover - we had to wait a little over a half hour for our table. If you're looking for a place where you need to be seated promptly at the time scheduled, you might look elsewhere. Once seated the service was quick, friendly, and efficient. The waiter had a strong British accent (sounding like Jason Statham) and he spoke rapidly, so hearing the specials was a little hard to hear. Other than that, no complaints. The anti pasta was just ok. For a main I had the Pepperdale Bolognese. Perfect fresh pasta & sauce."

My first glass of wine was bad (bottle bad--) that wasn't a big deal, got a nice glass of Barbera instead. The food was very good except tiramisu very dry, not flavorful at all. Waiter was great. ;"

  • "Food was hit or miss - some of our dishes were excellent and some were not very good. We were greeted very rudely and told we had to stand in the doorway (or outside, where it was below freezing) while we waited for our table, then as we tried to maneuver into the doorway we were hassled multiple times by the hostess that we needed to get out of the way faster. Made for a very unwelcoming start to our evening. But overall the place was cute and the food was fine. Probably wont be back."

  • "The dishes we selected were well made. Way too much feta on the menu for an Italian restaurant. Recently started to offer house made desserts but clearly not adept at this skill. At all. Gelato redolent with ice crystals; tiramisu had to be the worst ever (had it all over Italy and in US restaurants but this one was horrible), though it looked good. Decanting is a necessity with some of their wines, but the UK-born waiter didn't seem to know why that is. Only the last sips of the Amarone proved delicious. If one makes 7:00 PM reservations on a Sat, one will be rushed out. Recommended with serious reservations--definitely not to friends."

  • "Great little restaurant on Salem St in Boston's North End where both visitors and locals can enjoy outstanding dishes. We enjoyed Lobster Fritters with crisp onions in a reduction - big enough for two. My wife had buffalo short ribs with broccoli rabe and I had the beef tenderloin with spinach and gorgonzola potatoes. Both were done to perfection. Our waitress was friendly and attentive without being intrusive. This establishment is what one is looking for in a North End dining experience."

  • "I never pass up the opportunity to go to Terramia when I am in Boston. The service is great, and the food is wonderful. Starting with the cannelini bean paste that comes with the bread, we continued with the Tuscan Bean Soup and the Caprese Salad, which has the freshest mozzarella cheese. Pastas are all outstanding, but once again, I couldn't resist ordering the bolognese. Finally, we always manage to find a great bottle of wine."

  • "I had a very pleasant experience at Terramia. The food was outstanding, service was excellent, and the atmosphere was romantic/authentic. My one complaint was the wait time. I made a reservation prior to arrival, but had to wait for our table regardless. It ended up being 30 minutes before we were able to sit, however it was definitely worth the wait. We were very patient with the wait time as we understood there were only 12 tables. Overall, it was an excellent experience and I would recommend it."

  • "This is the kind of restaurant I hope to find when visiting a city. A man sitting next to me on a plane to Boston recommended this place and said the food was worth waiting for (it's a small place.) He was so right. My dining companion and I were torn so we decided to split several items and share. Our waiter could not have been more helpful. Instead of putting two shared entrees on a plate, each entree was divided and brought as separate courses, so we could enjoy the taste of each separately. Food is fantastic and wine choices plentiful. I would so come back here!"

The whole package is special - an intimate setting with great service and a delicious wine list. But the food could step up a notch. The pasta entrees are a little uninspired. Improving the quality of the entrees would really make this place a gem."

  • "Let's get our bias out right at the beginning. The only table they had available was right in front of the door in this small restaurant. Not a great place to sit for sure on a very cold windy January night in Boston. But we were hopeful because we had heard the food was good. It begin poorly--the cabernet tasted like fizzy grape soda. We hardly ever send wine back but couldn't stomach this one. Appetizers were good to pretty good. Entrees were edible. But for the prices ($34 for mine) they were just mediocre."
