A word from Terramia
A true gem among all those rhinestones in the North End, this rustic but cozy trattoria with stucco walls and beamed ceilings specializes in creative interpretations of Italian classics.
Behind Terramia's pane-windowed storefront on Salem Street is a busy trattoria decked out in linens, candlelight and paintings of the Italian countryside. Like the cuisine here, the atmosphere is elegant yet understated. Since opening in 1993, Terramia has aimed to convince North End diners that there was always more to Italian food than red sauce. Over the Years, the inventive and beloved restaurant has done a great deal of convincing. You'll find creative interpretations of seasonally-based classics here.
The ever-changing menu incorporates seasonal vegetables and the catch of the day. Homemade pasta dishes feature unconventional preparation styles--ravioli is served open-faced, with scallops, shrimp and zucchini, in a lobster mascarpone sauce.

I love Terramia. The food is usually extraordinary and the atmosphere is intimate and cozy. We had a reservation for 4 people for 7 pm. When we arrived (about 5 minutes before 7) all of the tables were occupied. The hostess thought the wait would be about 10 minutes, so we waited outside on the street on a fairly cold night. We were starting to get a bit impatient, when the hostess reappeared and informed us that the occupants of our table had just ordered desert, and she gave us the option of going over to Boca for a drink and offered to call us on our cell phone when the table was free. This was fine, I just wish she had offered us this option to start with. Once dinner began we were generally in good hands, with the antipasto appetizer plate (delicious). I ordered the swordfish (special) served over broccoli rabe in a citrus reduction sauce. One of my friends ordered veal served over broccoli rabe and we both commented on how unusually bitter the broccoli rabe was (even for broccoli rabe). I don't think this had anything to do with how it was cooked, it was just not the tastiest broccoli rabe I have had. The swordfish (with a few shrimp on top) was nice, but it could have used a bit more of the completely delicious citrus reduction sauce. In general we were happy, but I think if a table is not ready when a diner arrives, the diner should be offered the Boca option right away rather than waiting in the cold.

Our reservation was for 7pm. We were finally seated at 7:45. We were not the only guests who were seated significantly later than our reservation. The restaurant is incredibly small and the noise level high. Conversation was nearly impossible. The tables are packed tightly and we were both bumped and jostled throughout the meal. All of this would have been tolerable if the food had been as excellent as advertised. It wasn't. Every aspect of the meal was marginal at best. This was a special dinner for us and we were very disappointed in the venue. We wouldn't recommend this place and won't be returning.

We went here with family while in Mass. to visit them. We always go to La Dolce Vita but it was super packed and we'd heard Terramia was good. The food was great. Everyone was very pleased with what they ordered. My husband never likes tiramisu, but loved the tiramisu here. It was def. the best tiramisu I've ever had. The server was great. Overall, we were quite pleased. It was nice to try something new and not be disappointed. This place is super lively and energetic, as most places in the North End are.

Terramia is our favorite place to dine in the North End. The food is excellent, consistent and the waiters are attentive but not overly so. At the end of the meal a tiramasu, along with small glasses of Limoncello. A perfect way to end a delicious meal.

A cozy, comfortable North End Italian restaurant with excellent food and service. The meatball with polenta appetizer is wonderful. The meatballs are served sitting on top of creamy polenta with no sauce! The most juicy and tasty meatballs and a wonderful flavorful polenta.Would go back just to have this appetizer again. The fettucine bolognase is taken to new heights. The homemade fettucine are thin, tender noodles delicious in the wonderful mixture of ground meats, tomato and a touch of cream making up the bolognase sauce. One of the best bolognase sauces I have had anywhere. Our waiter was excellent, wine list is good with some nice Italian whites and reds. The atmosphere is inviting, relaxing and unpretentious. A North End gem!

We had 7:00 p.m. reservations which they called the day before to confirm and to be sure we would be on time. We arrived a few min before 7:00 and were told it would be a few min b/c they had just presented the check to the people at the table before us. At 7:15, again we asked how much longer and told just a few min. At 7:35, I asked again and was told by the hostess "there is nothing I can do about this", instead of saying something to the effect of "let me see what I can do". At 7:40, when the people were still sitting at the table (apparently they didn't consider putting us at another table), we told the hostess we were leaving. The most unfortunate thing was this had happened before to us and we were giving them a second chance.

I made an 8pm res for my anniversary which I noted in my reservation, we were seated at 8:45. We were told that our table wasn't ready as the earlier sitting was lingering and asked to wait outside since there is no bar inside. Thankfully it wasn't raining. The hostess was unable to provide any guidance on how long our wait might take or when people were initially seated. We were one of six couples waiting outside for a long time. The food came in generous portions which was the best part about it, it wasn't bad, just mediocre at best. By 9:15 on a Friday night the restaurant was half empty, clearly reservations were made very tight early in the evening since not that many people go here which is not surprising given the food and service.

The North End seems overly crowded on weekends at this time of year and we were lucky to get a window seat since we had 5 in our party. It is striking how long some diners will wait outside (there is no room inside to wait) for a table. It is always worth it. The food, as usual, is the start of the show. Outstanding antipasti, pasta course and Sea Bass. The waiter was very knowledgeable and helpful with choices and split some of the pasta courses for us. One of the entrees was late and he was extremely concerned about that. But it didn't matter since one of the couples split the Sea Bass while the second was still being plated. He made up for it by giving us desert gratis and even an aperitif that doesn't seem to be on the menu.

Terramia was fully occupied on a Monday evening (reservation required) and it is advisable in making a reservation for 4 to 6 people to ask for one of the two window tables. The swordfish special was superb, moist and flaky, one of the best swordfish I've ever had, the wine list varied and interesting, and the service was excellent.

We had to wait 30 min past our reservation time, and they put us at a table literally in the wait station. Food was just ok (at best) for being north end. Our waiter wasn't very good. Took our order but didn't come back after the food arrived. I would have loved another drink, since I had an empty glass almost the whole time our food was there. And the bathroom was a disaster. Overflowing garbage can onto the floor. Just messy all around. We had really high hopes for this restaurant. It was our anniversary dinner, but at least it was memorable I suppose

We recently dined at Terramia on a lovely Saturday for an early dinner in Boston. This little (15 table) restaurant was delightful. The food was delicious and although our water glass was constantly refilled our waiter neglected to ask about refills of wine! Waitstaff was more interested in being outside and on their cell phones or the computer rather than caring for the five tables that were occupied. Not a huge wine list by the glass but enough to choose from. Lots of specials but we went with items off the menu..yummy!
