Diner Reviews
  • "Terrain is a terrific and romantic garden and lifestyle store; just walking through it is kind of a zen + English garden experience. But we never expected to find this utterly charming, fantastic little restaurant inside. Pork belly and grilled peach appetizer was transcendent. The bread is a lovely big brioche brought tableside as baked in a clay flower pot. The butter is artisinal and slightly herbed. The portions were ample and beautifully presented. I especially recommend the dumpling, ramps and vegetable combination which was so creative, flavorful and different from any other restaurant. Can't wait to go back."

  • "I treated a friend to lunch at Terrain last week -- neither one of us had eaten there. The service was very helpful and knowledgable -- very attentive to us, although the delivery of food was a bit slow -- fine for the leisure crowd, but we were waiting a couple of times. Food recommendations were delicious. An expensive lunch out ($60), but worth it for the special occasion."

  • "Yes, Terrain is a treat - for mind and body - plated to palate. Terrain's surrounding store scenery complements the ambience."

  • "Been to Terrain a bunch of times, primarily for lunch but went for dinner the other night. Service was extremely slow and inattentive. Our food must have been waiting a while, because it was quite cold by the time it made it to the table. After reheating the steak, it was medium well instead of medium rare. Even so, I would go back, especially when the patio is open. It is a beautiful spot for eating al fresco, and lunch and brunch seem to be better staffed than dinner."

  • "Unique dining experience, wholesome real food, interesting menu. Coffee bar and separate dining room within "upscale gardening supply and equipment center in Westport, The open-air, brick-lined patio, surrounded by plants for sale, paired beautifully with the fresh, natural aspects of the cafe’s locavore menu" (NYT). Been there several times, doesn't disappointment from the bread pot through soup, entre and coffee/dessert. Check out the available dining times. Before/after dining, browse through Terrain's diverse selection of merchandise, furniture, clothing, candle and spa accessories. Of course there's flowers, plants, hardware, and more. Definitely worth a visit, two or more."

  • "I feel the food is fresh and hand crafted salads have wonderful combinations. The soups are always good and this new Italian pudding dessert with the salted caramel is over the top fantastic!"

  • "Jason was our waiter. He could not have been any more attentive if he tried. Delightful, helpful and he even made us a great drink. Wonderful experience, as always"

  • "Loved everything from the very start with easy online reservation capability. When you get there you realize you have just entered heaven - beautiful energy, wonders to look at with every step and at every turn. The food was pure pleasure to the eye and awesome for the taste buds. Definitely the place to bring those out-of-town guests who are visiting you and definitely the place to go when you need to buy an unusual gift."

  • "Our waitress disappeared from the floor for twenty minutes before we ordered. When she returned, she just said, "sorry for the delay." My wife's eggs were lukewarm and potatoes were cold when delivered. When she asked to send them back, she was told, "OK, we'll microwave it for you." My carrot spaetzle was swimming in grease so that it looked like soup. Very unappetizing. Thick carrot slices were barely cooked. Very unappetizing."

  • "A friend and I took our 7 year old daughters here before a play at the Westport Country Playhouse. Service took forever during brunch at noon on a Sunday. We weren't given silverware for two of us, waters, or offered a kids menu until we asked. Food was amazing as usual, but the ambience of this place completely changes when they are cooped up inside. The staff is almost afraid to walk the floor as tables are cramped together and all tables were in need of something. We even had the same waitress that blew us away this summer, and she couldn't handle her tables. The whole tone of the place was very stressful. I'll be back because the food is THAT GOOD, but I will wait for the zen experience of sitting in the garden"

  • "Everything is perfect at Terrain! The ambience is spectacular, the service attentive but not cloying, and the food is reliably excellent. This is one of my favorite lunch places-- and i live in Greenwich, not Westport."

  • "Do you like to relax while you eat? Do you enjoy savory food that you want to eat slowly so you can enjoy it? Do you want your lunch to be an experience that lasts longer than the food being delivered to your table? Then terrain is your place for dining? Delicious food accompanied by a delicious environments of living things. sit relax enjoy your food and take a walk through the nursery and Peruse their lovely gift galleries. It's a lovely way to spend the day."

  • "Lunch is always good here, well seasoned and interesting menu. The quinoa salad was just a little too healthy tasting, almost like what you might feed your horse for lunch. The portions are generally on the small side and the bread, though good would be more in keeping with the rest of the food if it was whole grain. Nobody serves white bread anymore..."

  • "Very nice smaller sized restaurant with interesting, fresh food. Friendly, efficient service. Not noisy! Soup, salads and entrees were very good. The desserts were a bit disappointing. Will be returning and recommending this restaurant to friends."

  • "Someone had a great idea to use this extraordinary space and use part of it for a restaurant. If you've never been to Terrain to buy a gift for someone, you won't know what I am talking about. In the middle of winter, we felt like we were going out to dinner in the spring. The food is very good although a bit pricey. I would recommend this restaurant to those who enjoy finding new places to eat in the area."

  • "Terrain's garden cafe exceeded all of my expectations. The ambiance in and of itself was worth it, but the food made the experience great. Not only was the bread pot amazing but the gnocchi I had was also incredible. Great spot."

  • "This is a small but beautiful garden restaurant in a unique store. Browse the store or just go for food. Small food selection, but what they have is wonderful!"

  • "awful. the bread use to come out warm and now it never does and the wait staff is just awful. the only reason we go back here is the food.we just mentally prepare that the service portion is not good and concentrate on the food."

  • "I have dined at Terrain about 5 times now. While I like the food and ambiance, I don't think its worth the money we spent. 3 Salads and 2 soft drinks for over $100.00 for lunch?? My salad only had 1 eggs, shaved potatoes and 1 piece of bacon chopped up. really? That costs $18? I don't think I will be dining there any time soon."

  • "I have been frequenting this charming place throughout the seasons, but always with just one other guest. Saturday eight friends met for brunch. It was the first time for the other 7, and my first brunch experience here . Jason our server was very attentive, well informed about the menu and did not hesitate to suggest some of his personal favorites and best offerings, which the group appreciated, being their first visit . The food was rated as very good overall , but it took a while for brunch to reach the table due to the size of our party. The chicken and faro was delicious, crispy skin with flesh very moist, gnocchi was very delicate, Bloody Mary's were good but not remarkable and very pricey. Everyone voiced plans to return again."

  • "Had to introduce this spot to a friend who loves artsy, loves flowers, loves gardens and loves a good find! The minute I discovered Terrain I knew I had to go back with her, just to see her face, and it was everything we hoped it would be."

  • "Great shop with very nice indoor/outdoor garden and home goods. Love the idea that they included a cafe in the midst of it all. Had a really nice brunch with friends and will go back. In fact we are planning to go to a terrarium workshop for a ladies night out next month."

  • "Food was incredible! The server/waiter was what you expect at a nice restaurant; professional. Bus boy was a bit sloppy on a few occasions (filled my glass that had Sprite in it with water, and dropped a fork on my friend at the table), but it wasn't a big deal. The place was busy, so the service was on the slower side- but not to the point of it affecting our overall review. This place, unlike some of my other favorite places in town, is consistently good! The chef only would do the tasting menu if the entire table ordered it, but I'm fine with that. Molasses infused butter, the soup of the day (butternut squash), the beet appetizer, duck, pasta and short rib were all worthy of me taking the time to write this review. Bravo!"

  • "This restaurant is in the middle of a gardening type store. Even though that is weird they have walled off an inner section for dining. The food was expensive and nouveau in the overly fancy sense of the word. Service was excellent. We had to make it in and out in less than an hour to see a show at the Westport County Playhouse (as did several other tables we learned) and we made it. Price is 20% off if you have tickets to the show, which made it more reasonable."

  • "The service was great. The flys were flying non-stop around us and the food - a little icky - and one was in my water, which the waiter quickly replaced. We ordered 2 things to split - gnocchi and short rib sandwich. The gnocchi was a very small portion, smothered in what tasted like too much butter, and was a little mushy for my taste. The short rib sandwich was very good - on great bread with a ridiculously large serving of french fries - which were good too. For dessert we just ordered a black coffee and a black iced tea. Both were perfect. Prob won't rush to go back."

  • "My husband and I discovered Terrain during Restaurant Week earlier this year. While the restaurant is on a very busy street, Rte 1, you feel as if you walked into a completely different world. It's atmosphere is very serene and the food is outstanding. We go back often and I recently told my husband that maybe we should branch out and try some other restaurants. However, it is hard. Whenever we try a new place, I'm constantly comparing it to the food at Terrain. I'm not a dessert person, but the desserts are worth trying. In addition to the food, the service is amazing. Our waitress was kind and attentive even though she was handling many other tables."

  • "fabulous food indoors or out, at a cafe in the best garden boutique ever! Very pleasant service, helpful and efficient. Amazing bread, served (baked?) in a flower pot, great omelette. Excellent tea selection, especially the Oolong. Wandering through the store before or after is like being in an art gallery but with plants. Really fun! Very hard to get out of there without buying something, so be warned.! Great for lunch and tea time. I haven't tried dinner yet, but hear from friends it's just as good."

  • "This is my 8th time at Terrain. Food is usually very good. This visit was during Restaurant Week and I ordered from the special Restaurant Wk menu. The chicken was dry and had no flavor. The mushroom soup a close second as far as little flavor. Only good part of the meal were the vegees and potatoes which were the bed for the chicken. Cappuccino was also good. It was a big disappointment."

  • "Even a couple of guys enjoyed the nursery/garden setting. A little pricy vs. comparable restaurants in the area. the guys might be a little hungry when they left. but I saw a scrumptious looking shortcake and fruit dessert going to them!"

  • "My wife and I hadn't been to Terrain for a couple of months and boy were we surprised. We thought the food was very good the last few times that we ate at Terrain but it became immediately apparent that they jumped to a new level. The food was outstanding in every way. The ingredients were fresh and beautifully presented. The new chef (from the Terrain in Philly) takes some risks that are rewarded. Terrain is a great spot to eat outdoors during the nice weather. Don't miss it!"
