Diner Reviews
  • "The environment was very spacious but still intimate at the same time."

  • "The crab cake appetiser was delish. I had scallops with risotto. My dinner companion had the catch of day sea bass. Both were lacking a true flavor that we expected to be present with both. Scallops a bit too chewy and lacked simple seasoning of garlic and lemon. Risotto portion was large for the number of scallops. Risotto also had minimal flavors.Sea Bass was okay but plating sauce was a bit thin. Service was okay..but obvious regulars seem to get preferred treatment. All in all would return for another dinner."

  • "The food was well made, but often tasteless. The service was impeccable. Overall, for the high price, there are many, many places in town offering more value for the dollar."

  • "The management and staff are indifferent to the customers. We had the prime rib, and it had been frozen, then microwaved prior to serving. We pointed this out to the manager, and he said it is grass fed, per customer's requests, and had been cooked that day. I asked if he meant microwaved in lieu of "roasting", and he walked off in a huff. Also, we inquired about "happy hour", and were told it only applied to patron's sitting at the bar and high tops. However, when a "VIP couple" seated next to us, the waiter explained the policy, but said he would waive it for them. We asked about this, and he said they were investors in the restaurant. For a meal that we could not finish (40.00 each), we will never return. Same as when they opened!"

  • "Wow - went Friday night, then back again Tuesday. I was visiting from Atlanta and am glad to have found a great place I want to go to when visiting. Everyone in our party will be returning for dinner"

  • "Every now and then I crave some swishy dish and Terra Jax hits my spot! An excellent meal in a comfy cozy setting ... just right ... and if you like Merlot I highly recommend 14 Hands ... OH and don't miss the Lemon Souffle Cheesecake! My compliments to the chef !"

  • "Anne has been trying to get me to your establishment for the past year and I was so glad to help you celebrate. The shrimp was the best I have ever eaten. Anne ate all of the generous plate of lamb. I wanted to lick my plate. It was a very enjoyable evening and the stresses of the week started lifting as soon as we entered. Your staff was just right - knowledgable, professional without being intrusive. It has been quite some time since we enjoyed such a lovely evening. Best wishes for your continued success! The ambience was sophisticated in the front room and quiet enough to converse."

  • "Terra sent out coupons for their anniversary, so we gave it another chance. Appetizer - 4 crab balls - taste okay, cooked outside not center. Filet - very tender, flavorful, properly cooked. Sea bass - very generous portion, perfectly cooked, beautiful crust, moist but bland. We eat sashimi and like unadulterated fish, but needed seasoning to balance smashed potatoes & steamed broccoli. Service - tedious - 10 minutes before waiter took drink order and not busy. We were often looking for him. When at table you definitely noticed him - clumsy. Ambience - enclosed porch very plain; nch seats not comfortable. Many reviewers love this place. We are most likely won't be back given many wonderful alternatives in Avondale/Riverside."

  • "Every Friday night we have date night and decided to give a Terra a try. While I was not all that impressed with the ambiance, the service and food made up for it. The food was outstanding, the service top notch. They could use a little work on the wine list, but I found a wine I ended up enjoying. A bit on the pricey side. Dinner for two with one appetizer, two Caesar salads, two entrees, one dessert, one glass of tea, one glass of wine and one coffee came to $135.00. And we did not pick the higher end of the price range. Great place for special occasions , but we could not do this every week."

  • "I expected an excellent meal for the price we paid for dinner - it was just "meh". Also, the entree we ordered was not as described on the menu. When I asked about it, the "host" replied "maybe the chef got creative". Really? And you are okay with that? We got a "sorry about the asparagus" as we were walking out the door to leave. We should have gone to Orsay........"

  • "A great place to always count on for a great reasonably priced gourmet experience. Terra covers a lot of bases well. Our children who are not fond of fine-dining because of the perceived length of wait actually enjoy coming here. I appreciate the accommodating management & the well-thought out wine list! It does not hurt that upon leaving I do not feel 'spanked' too bad by the bill. Good value for the money."

  • "My husband and I had a nice dinner on the night after Valentine's Day--the restaurant was booked on Valentine's Day .I have been there several times-sorry that lunch is no longer an option. I have been pleased with the food and the presentation. Our waiter was very responsive to our needs. Also, nice that the owner came over to greet us."

  • "My wife and I had dinner here on Saturday and the service and food was excellent. My spinach salad was great and my wife loved her Caesar salad. We split a filet mignon and blackened mahi mahi, both of which were superb. Our waiter was exceptional too!"

  • ""This was so special" - My date said it all! We dined at Terra for Valentine's Day. We were a little early for our 6:30 reservation, but this didn't faze them one bit. We were greeted warmly and seated immediately in the open but intimate dining room. Our attentive but discreet server appeared almost immediately and filled our drink orders and explained the evening's soups & specials. The owner came by to make sure to thank us for coming and to make sure all was well. The menu featured a broad array of entrees from filet Mignon to Chilean sea bass, scallops, salmon, and a vegetarian selection. We had the sea bass and the salmon, both outstanding. My only regret is that I didn't visit Terra sooner. We will be back though!"

  • "The service provided by our waiter (sorry, can't remember his name, but he had long hair fixed in a very tidy braid) was truly outstanding. Food was overall good. The salad was standard, and the Terra platter (combination of three items) was disappointing. Our entrees (fish) were very good and cooked perfectly. The restaurant is in a neigborhood a few miles out of the downtown area. Easy to find."

  • "I was coming down with a bad respiratory problem the night that I went to Terra's. It was my first time there since you opened the restaurant. And so I think that the above review is not really a fair one. I will come again and make other choices for dinner when I come so that I will have a well rounded view of what the dining experience at Terra's really is. I don't know if you are open for brunch or lunch and so I couldn't judge that. And I don't drink alcoholic beverages. And so I couldn't judge that. Thanks so much for your hospitality."

    Dined on 2/1/2014
  • "Service was very good, atmosphere was nice, and food was good but way, and I mean way, overpriced for what you get. The salad I ordered was $7.75 and was the size of a side salad; VERY small. I also ordered scallops and got 4 for $30. They bring you bread but nothing to put on it and never asked if we wanted more. Had I known I'd still be hungry after spending $80 I would have filled up on bread. Also, we were in and out of there in no time. I've had slower dining experiences at McDonald's."

  • "We were looking forward to a special dinner date night and boy, were we disappointed! I chose a craft beer from the menu, only to be told they did not have it. My husband chose a "regular" beer, and the waitress came back to tell him they could not get into the beer cage. Later, they managed to get in (I suspect they sent someone to a convenience store to buy beer) and brought him a beer "on the house." The menu was WAY overpriced. The prime rib was tough, except for the fatty areas, the fish was pan-seared to the point of a thick crust, and the mashed potatoes were unseasoned and stone cold. The service was disorganized and VERY slow - other diners had the same experience. It took over an hour for our food to arrive. Never again!"

  • "Visiting relatives on the Southside, I would not normally trek to this part of town for dinner, but I'm glad we did! Very nice, cozy restaurant where many of the guests seem to know each other and socialize. Approach to both food and wine seems to be to keep the number of selections to a manageable number, provide something for everybody's tastes and keep the prices reasonable. The wines, in particular, are a good value. We had three different main courses - all well-executed. I have already shared this find with some of my friends and relatives who live in or visit Jax frequently. None knew of the restaurant, but I think Terra is now on their radar screens. Look forward to a return visit myself."

  • "Service was good. Owner made a point of greeting customers. Interesting eclectic menu. Had the special catch which was too pricey compared with other menu items. Did not care for the mashed potatoes or the spinach which was not cooked enough and too much garlic. An odd flavor. Might return for lunch in their outdoor area which is very attractive."

  • "First time customer and we will be back. Food and wine were great. Small and quiet crowd for a Friday night so we didn't have any trouble being sat. Hope for their sake it does get busier. Free valet parking was a nice touch. Great food in an area of town many do not think to go so I hope the word of mouth spreads soon. Nice little patio that no one was on but looks like it would a great place to hang with live music."

  • "Another nice evening at Terra's on New Year's Eve. Early reservation(6:15 PM) but place filled up fast by 7 PM. Michael was there to greet us and sit us. Checked back frequently - nice touch. TJ was waiter and good. Little distracted as dinner service progressed. Too long to do dessert / check / payment thing but I'm impatient generally. Highlight was Shrimp Bisque. New item and delicious. Daughter had the fried green tomatoes which she loved. Other daughter had her favorite pork belly's. Duck breast, lamp chops, and fillet for dinner … all good. We all thought the spinach was excellent. Wine list changes frequently but found nice zin at good price which went well with lamp, duck, and fillet. TJ recommended; spot on."

  • "Meat quality was not up to its usual standards. Both my dinner companion and I felt this way. Everything else was excellent, especially the desserts! A disappointment since it was New Year's Eve. We will return to eat there again, however."

  • "I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to terra. This is one of few restaurants where you can have a conversation without yelling. The decor is warm and inviting. The service was excellent and the food very good. I also really enjoyed the wine. This restaurant is off the main drag and, I fear, often overlooked. People are missing out by passing it by."

  • "The first time I went to Terra I had the roast duck and my husband had the salmon. Both were very good. The next time we went we decided to try different items from the menu, I had the scallops and risotto and he had the sea bass, again both dishes were excellent. I will definitely return and try more of the items."

  • "First time. Wanted to try this new place in an old place. Setting was very nice and welcoming. Service - excellent. Not over bearing; attentive. Always a fine line. Wine selection was varied. Waiter was knowledgeable and allowed me to taste "my" selection vs his. He was right! My daughter wanted a glass of white. Her overly sweet Riesling not available . No palate. Her desired over sweet Riesling was not available and was steered to nice Fume Blanc. The only issue. Wife's filet was way over salted. Not inedible but I tasted. Too too much. Disappointing but duck breast was great. Michael the owner stopped by after dinner, introduced himself, and accepted criticism graciously. Class act. I only expect it to be resolved."

  • "Michael Thomas, the owner, has been around the restaurant world in Jacksonville for a long time. It is a great little restaurant. The last two times I have been, I have had the Pork Chops, which were a special item. They are about 1.5 inches thick, are butterflied, seared. Whatever they do, they are awesome. My wife thinks their crab cakes are the best in town."

  • "This was my first time at this restaurant. I highly recommend making a reservation but a walk-in can be accommodated in the bar if its crowded. We walked in and were greeted by Quinn, the General Manager behind the bar. This guy is great!!! He is knowledgable about the food and wine and gives great descriptions of the menu items. This is a place to relax, have conversation with your date or friends and have an amazing diner. Possibly the best thing we ate that night was the Sea Bass. It was amazing!!!! They also have the best bread basket. I'm from up North so a good crunchy crust and a soft middle hits all my buttons. Finally the dessert. WOW is all I can say. They have an in house Pastry Chef and boy she can bake. I'll be back again!!!"
