A word from Tender Bar + Kitchen
Tender Bar + Kitchen is an American cocktail lounge & restaurant that celebrates a return to a past era. Cocktails are crafted with pride and in the classic tradition by respected professionals behind the bar. The inspired food menu offers soul-satisfying small plates that celebrate American cuisine. Dishes are prepared in a scratch kitchen, with organic, sustainably grown produce, meats, and fish as often as possible. The space is open, the atmosphere warm and inviting, the design a reflection on early 20th century lifestyle. Tender draws inspiration, and its name, from the Arsenal Bank building it occupies – a storied financial institution that served the Lawrenceville community, exchanging legal tender for its patrons for over a century.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Very lively well run bar. We had a cheeseboard that was delicious and my hamburger and my husband's fish sandwich were both excellent. Dessert a bit disappointing, but decaf coffee was fine. We would definitely return."

  • "I like the decor and ther server was excellent. The noise level ws just a bit much for my husband and I. I understand with the high ceiling and the hard wood floors the noise level is not muted at all. This would be a great place for young people but not so much the older crowd. The drink list is extensive but after the martininis we ordered were not up to par I was not willing to try another and be disappointed again. Too much vermouth . That is the first time I really did not like the way the martini was made. Neither did my husband."

  • "Really enjoyed the place / atmosphere. Hungout with friends and had some really good apps and drinks. Definitely would recommend to others."

  • "This is a great place for perfectly crafted drinks by bartenders who know exactly what they're doing."

  • "Two of us went on Burger Monday and had the Tender Burger and the Blue Burger with tater tots. The food was delicious, as were our cocktails! Good deal!"

  • "The bar dominates the space and the menu. The cocktails were good and interesting. The food menu was less extensive than I expected, but the food was quite good, and everything they had looked interesting. The only down sides were the noise level and the service. The space is open and pretty. We were there on a Monday night so it was relatively quiet in terms of the number of guests but it still got pretty loud. I can't imagine what it's like on a busy Friday or Saturday night. The service was friendly and knowledgeable, but a little slow to take our order and ask for refills or next drinks. We will definitely be going back."

  • "Great cocktail selection! I liked the decor and design of the place. A bit pricey, though."

  • "Say what you will about the craft cocktail scene, I love it and this place has it down. The food menu is fairly limited, but this is OK by me- we had excellent drinks and a tasty burger. The waitstaff was excellent as well- knowledgeable, friendly, and efficient."

  • "Easily my favorite spot in lawrenceville if not the entire city. The staff is fun, knowledgeable, and very service oriented. They are always happy to suggest a cocktail or make something special for you. Still not much experience with the good other than snacks and dessert but the drinks are second to none. Wonderful atmosphere as well."

  • "Aside from the burger and apps on the menu they had two dinner options, steak or spaghetti."

  • "Tender had been suggested by a friend since I was interested in seeing what was available in the Lawrenceville Corrider. However I took a friend for her birthday prior to going to the theater. I was disappointed in the small menu and my friend ended up having a cheese burger on her birthday! Atmosphere was very nice though and would be a good choice for happy hour with friends."

  • "Service was superb and the atmosphere is much more sophisticated than what you would ever expect in Pittsburgh. Tender does an excellent job with specialty cocktails, dedicated service and ambiance but the food/menu leaves a bit to be desired. Offer classic bar staples but "re-spun" but with such bizarre hipster twists they border on misrepresentation. One exception being the chocolate mousse. On the plus side, the pricing is worth the presentation alone and you're unlikely to care after a few of your favorite adult beverages-served with a gracious smile from the attentive and knowledgable staff. Request Sarah."

  • "We ate here for our anniversary. We were late for our reservation, but they were really nice about it. The drinks were really good, if pricey (though not that pricey for cocktails really). Got the first two within banker's hour ($2 off all cocktails), though the second two were just after it. I had the Hot Buttered Rum and the Parker and Barrow. My favorite was the Parker and Barrow-- very girly (bright pink!) with a not too sour grapefruit as the main taste but also not too sweet and very refreshing. Girlfriend got the mulled cider and Sally Draper. She wasn't as happy about these because she ended up with two cinnamon drinks in a row Food was ok but not the best. Girlfriend's 'israeli couscous' had a thick sauce-- more of a risotto"

  • "The drinks are amazing and I really like the ambiance. The bar selection is HUGE!!! I would definitely recommend this place for drinks, and make sure you have a reservation because it fills up rather quickly. I'd also recommend asking to sit as far away from the front door as possible. Even with the second door, it takes a while to close and this cold breeze comes in... it's uncomfortable"

  • "Tenders is in a beautifully remodeled former bank. You feel like you are straddling two eras. The cocktails are delicious but small, strong and very interesting combos at about $11-$13 each. The menu is limited but we enjoyed the burgers, tater tots and salads. We sat at a table in the lounge area so seating ranged from couches, to big over stuffed chairs to backless seats. The bar is gorgeous. It has a nice vibe."

  • "Great burger otherwise small plates of upscale bar snacks. Awesome cocktails probably best in burgh."

  • "The cocktail selection is fantastic. it's inventive without being precious. Sort of the right mix between delicious things that make responsible drinking a struggle and slavishly "authentic" tributes to the golden age of cocktails (or maybe we're in the golden age of cocktails now? probably not, I sort of think you aren't supposed to recognize a golden age when it's happening...uhm...nevermind, sorry) The appetizers are good and really reasonably priced. The service is not awesome. Sit at the bar, not a table. The staff isn't able to accommodate really basic seating requests, even if the place is half empty, and the waiters are either overattentive or totally absent, with no in-between."

  • "Overall very nice experience. Menu pretty limited but interesting. The burger was ok...nothing special. As the only consistent entree I would have thought it would be better. Drinks are awesome, as was the vibe. Service was fine. Would definitely return."

  • "The menu is small, but everything we had from it was very good and fun. The cheese & olive plates are highly recommended and the entree of the night was duck which was done perfectly. Not to mention the concoctions are amazing as well!"

  • "Fantastic drinks and even better service. The bartenders are extremely knowledgable and friendly."
    Dined on 11/30/2013
  • "They could definitely stand to add more entrees to the menu going forward. There were only two "specials" available on our visit and these were the only true entrees on the entire menu. (Both the vegetarian pasta and the Duck were lovely)"

  • "Had a great time here munching on small plates and drinking great cocktails. We had an olive and a pickle plate, both of which came with some pleasant surprises. (woody olives, spicy pickled carrots) The drinks were well-crafted. While it may have taken as long to make our cocktails as it did to drink them, the music was not so oppressive that we couldn't have a quiet conversation while we waited."

  • "the restaurant has a GREAT bar with interesting delicious cocktails. The food choice while limited are well done and unusual. A fine evening with great service."
    Dined on 11/9/2013
  • "I must say that Tender was "just OK" and did not live up to all the hype and expectations. The drink menu is extensive and the food we ordered was pretty good (spicy city chicken with blue cheese slaw, potato skins) but the cheese tray has 3 small chunks of domestic cheese for $14 which was a total rip off and one of our pet peeves are Pittsburgh restaurants who do not provide new plates and silverware between dishes, which they did not do until asked. Our server was less than responsive, mumbled so low we could not hear her, and did not know the answers to any of the menu questions we asked her (the types of cheese, the daily specials). Unless they improve their service, they will lose customers as quickly as they get them"

  • "This is a very cute little bar serving all manner of interesting cocktails. The food selections are very meager, though, so don't come here if you are hungry. I've honestly never been to a bar/restaurant that had so little food available. The cocktails are great, but after a few of them you will definitely feel them since your stomach will be empty."

  • "We had to wait 45 minutes to get anything other than a glass of water. While there is food, the menu is too limited. Beer selection was unimpressive for such a focused bar"

  • "The cocktails are fabulous with unusual and fresh ingredients. The food selections limited but what is available is well done. They generally offer a number of small plates, a burger, and one or two entrees a day. The cheese plate is a good choice, with three selected cheeses, bread and appropriate condiments. The barbecue popcorn is a good starter, as are the spiced nuts. The burger is delicious and don't skip the tots! The space itself is absolutely gorgeous - a repurposed old bank with a loungely atmosphere. Tender is a great place to go with a group of friends for light fare and drinks."

  • "We ate here for our anniversary, and we're very happy we chose this place. The small plates were a great idea for sharing, and the daily entree, which was a flank steak and stir fried vegetables, was fantastic! The cocktails were a real highlight. We will definitely return, and look forward to what special dinners they concoct."

  • "My wife and I on Friday went to Tender thinking we were going out to dinner since we got a reservation on Open Table. When we arrived at the restaurant we were surprised to see the menu was more of a happy hour type menu than dinner. We notice also that we were not the only table to have this experience. I had read articles about this restaurant while it was being prepared that described it as a restaurant serving "tender" cuts of meat in a new way. When we got there it seems that the tender means more bar tender. If your looking for an upscale happy hour that is what Tender is, however I would recommend Bar Marco for this before Tender."

  • "The latest example of Pittsburgh restauranteurs rockin' the 'Burgh. This place is just fantastic in so many ways. Best craft cocktail list and presentation I've ever seen (and I'm really into craft cocktails). Really innovative simplified menu (4 dinner items) just worked really well and was fabulous. Ambience and staff were fantastic. Really look forward to getting back to Tender."
