A word from Ten
The Japanese word ten can mean "heaven", "above" or "celebration" and the dining experience at TEN modern Japanese restaurant is all of these things.

TEN approaches traditional Japanese dishes as if they were works of modern art. The superior ingredients are the building blocks of inspiration and the plates are crafted to please both the palate and the eye. Superior products are used and the seafood arrives daily from fishing auctions in Japan and Hawaii. Beyond the incredibly fresh sushi, the menu features a variety of hot and cold ala carte items and offers many choices for vegetarians as well as non-seafood eaters.

The bar menu boasts an extensive list of Sake, carefully selected in conjunction with specialty importers and a prominent Sake sommelier. Ten also features an extensive wine list, and specialty cocktails using unique ingredients such as the "Ten" which is comprised of sake, vodka, aloe juice, and sweet Japanese plums.

Diner Reviews
  • "I was disappointed with my experience. Food was good but way overpriced!"

  • "Excellent dining experience. Perfect for celebrating and trying something new. Service was very attentive, friendly and informative. Sushi & sashimi were awesome!"

  • "I could eat at Ten every night of tbe week and then some!"

  • "Our celebration was wonderful. Our server was helpful with menu selections, and every morsel was scrumptious, as well as beautiful. We couldn't have asked for more."

  • "Service was lacking--hostess didn't even greet us with a hello, watched as I struggled to pull out the very heavy chair without offering to help, waiter was aloof and slow. Sauces were heavy-handed with sauce. And when did sake start being served in a wine glass?"

  • "My wife and I went to Ten for restaurant week in Charlottesville. The three course menu had some excellent selections in each group. We had the fried chicken wings and the Kurobuta wontons as our first courses - succulent and a little spicy. Then we had a tiger roll (steamed tiger shrimp, avocado and eel sauce) and a Hotate roll (scallops and jalapeno) - both delicious. And finally hanger steak with blue crab and tuna Tatake with crushed avocado. Everything was superb - very subtle seasonings and flavor/texture combinations. My wife did the wine pairings with her three dishes but we didn't think they were very good pairings. The one irritating thing was the gnats that kept buzzing around our table."

  • "The sushi at TEN (which is all I ordered) is amazing! Each course had unique and creative flavors, and the presentation is beautiful. The sushi/sashimi portions are on the small side but the overall meal was fantastic! I love TEN's decor, something between old hollywood nightclub and modern loft style."

  • "For the most part, the fish was overpowered by sauces and spices. Jalapenos and butter with raw fish does not bring out the flavor; it hides it. The omakase sushi, a more traditional dish was much better."

  • "Mu husband and I came here to celebrate his birthday during restaurant week. We ordered a sake flight then chose glasses to go with our meals. They were new to us and we appreicated the subtle flavors that paired nciely with our food. All our dishes were superb and the service was execptional."

  • "My husband and I visited TEN for the first time during restaurant week and the food was delicious and for a great deal compared to their regular priced menu. Will definitely be coming back to TEN!"

  • "It is very posh for a sushi restaurant. Plenty of booths and not so many tables to give it a quaint and more personal feel. The wait staff is excellent and the menu offers some NOBU inspired dishes as well as creative rolls. Must try if your ever in Charlottesville"

  • "Ten is a sushi restaurant. My husband loves sushi and I hate it. But we both loved our dinners. This was the first sushi restaurant I have been to that had more than a deep friend tempura and rice as the alternative to sushi. I had amazingly flavorful harachi beef with Miso sauce, a delicious salad with ginger dressing, and edamame. Very delicious and satisfying. And the three people I was dining with all enjoyed their sushi immensely!"

  • "The sushi and specialty cocktails were amazing. Perfect spot for a trendy Friday evening dinner date. Great place to go with friends. The ambience was incredible. Tall windows and high ceilings with a great vibe. Made you feel like you were having sushi in New York City. I was very pleased overall with the experience."

  • "The restaurant was beautiful! It had cool lighting, funky walls, very interesting looking. The staff was also great. "

  • "I absolutely love this restaurant. I have been here many times, and the food has always been spectacular. However, I can't help but be rather annoyed every time me and my significant other have been seated at the awkward 2-person tables in the middle. He is a fairly large man, and he looks visibly uncomfortable sitting at a small table. Even on a week night when the restaurant is close to empty, we have been sat at those tables. It is painfully awkward when you ask to move and the hostess tells you the other tables are "reserved" for a party that apparently never shows up. Food is great, seating is HORRIBLE."

  • "Everything was fresh and presented well. The sake list is outstanding as was the service. My only criticism is that the rolls were not rolled tightly enough."

  • "A little pricey but the sushi was delicious. Make sure you try the skewers!"

  • "Thankfully we had a booth. There are now tiny tables for two crammed into the aisle between the banks of booths which hamper diners and wait staff and offer no privacy for the hapless diners who end up there. The miso soup was refreshing yet substantial, the chef's selection of sushi was a delight - melt-in-the-mouth succulence, the calamari tempura a winner as always. We agreed that the chicken teriyaki was ho-hum. The rice bowl was delicious. One of the best places to dine in Charlottesville."

  • "Both traditional and innovative sushi, sashimi, tempura, small plates and a few entrees in a hip setting. Great service and a nice sake list round out a great experience. I hit this place every time I come to C'ville!"

  • "I came to this restaurant for my birthday dinner and it was fantastic. The food was simple, fresh, and tasty. The sushi was of very high quality and the options were wonderful. Overall, a great experience that I would recommend for any date, special occasion, or just an evening out."

  • "Dinner on Saturday . It was myself, my husband and our daughter. Both my daighter and I have dinned with you over a dozen times. We love your atmosphere and food. Saturday was disappointing, waiter seemed very rushed, too long for dirnks, food overall was good, chicken yakitori was cold and dry."

  • "Great food but the waiter was somewhat rude and ambivalent to us. The hostess was also very aloof. So, I'd love to back for the sushi but hope that the wait staff could learn a thing or two."

  • "I dined at Ten for the first time recently, despite having lived in and around C'ville for a long time - and had to ask myself why I had waited so long! The food was outstanding, and the portions average to generous. The service was excellent - attentive, friendly, helpful and reserved all at once. The sushi was fresh, and the selection adequate - a good range of "standard" selections, and a few gems (like fresh sea urchin, monkfish liver, and marinated tuna). Ten's sake selection is amazing - and the variety is superb. The decor is elegant and airy (they've got 20ft ceilings...), without being uncomfortable. We reserved a table, and I would recommend asking for a booth if you can. One tiny downside - the price tag is a bit rich, too..."

  • "The quality of the fish was good, but the presentation was not that good. The atmosphere wasn't good. The service was fair. Very over priced. I wouldn't recommend it."

  • "And great service! Our server was helpful, attentive and just generally nice. She, along with the tasty food (waygu beef roll, chesapeake roll, ten salad, other sushi and apps) and chic atmosphere, made for a great ladies night out for five women celebrating a special occasion."

  • "This is the only place in Charlottesville where I truly trust the sushi and the chefs. Everything they offer is beautifully arranged, flavorful and well arranged. The flavors complemented each other perfectly. It's a little pricey, but you really do get what you pay for and it's worth every penny!"

  • "I love how Ten carefully and tastefully crafts all of their rolls. The waiters are so attentive and friendly. Always a wonderful experience at Ten!"

  • "Great food and drinks. Some of the best sushi in town. Don't pass up dessert, the coffee and donuts are excellent."

  • "TEN delivered on my expectation. The calamari starter was fantastic, and all three sushi/sashimi plates we ordered turned out wonderfully. The service was top notch, and the overall dining experience was awesome. This restaurant is on the expensive side, but for a special occasion, it is most definitely worth it."

  • "Lobster tempura is the bomb. I'd say the sushi is pretty tradition. It's delicious. Good place for a date night; I'd recommend a reservation, the place is a popular spot."

  • "one of the best in Charlottesville. when we are thinking of a special occasion place or to host out of towners Ten is always one of the first places to come to our mind. as always we had a great dinner with friends recently during restaurant week."

  • "Ten is the best Sushi in Charlottesville, and your wallet knows it. Great for dates, not great for groups unless you've got an expense account."
    Dined on 2/1/2014
  • "Cannot beat the variety of sake, and freshness of the sashimi an/d sushi. Creative and delicious choices. That said, all of the cooked items were too salty. Be prepared to pay more than many Charlottesville restaurants. Pricy even during restaurant week. We plan to try happy hour sometime when the outside patio is reopened."

  • "Ten is great! The whole experience was simply amazing. I have waited a long time to see what the buzz was about and always wondered if it was legit. Oh man, it is one of the best meals I have had in Charlottesville. So good."

  • "Four of us visited TEN on a Friday night - $36 Price fix meal with $1 per plate to a local charity. Great menu- Loved the sashimi and sushi. Noodle bowl and Tuna entrees were superb. Did not have the recommended Rose to per the menu, so provided a complimentary upgrade. Gotta love that. Have eaten here before- but can'tt afford to eat here often. They never disappoint, but a three course meal for $36 was a bargain!"

  • "All aspects of the experience were amazing. The real highlight was our server."
    Dined on 1/31/2014
  • "The food was amazing, but they seemed to be a bit disorganized when it came to service, it took almost 15 minutes to get drinks ( I would understand if it was an Apple bees, but when I'm leaving with a tab for 2 people over $100, I expect top north service). But even with the service being so-so...the food is totally worth it."

  • "Customer service was pretty awful - probably won't try this restaurant again."

  • "Went for Restaurant Week to check out TEN since it is consistently rated the best sushi in Charlottesville. Checked out the menu online prior, and found it very confusing. Asked the waiter some questions upon arrival and found the answers equally as confusing. Generally this seemed to be the problem - TEN is very good a making their food sound awesome, with an extensive list of ingredients listed in Japanese but it turns out some dishes were nothing more than tuna with rice, or just ramen. And in generally the food was bland. The fish did not have a ton of taste, and neither the waiter nor the person who delivered the food told us which items were which. Also wish they had put more sushi rolls in the menu options."
