A word from Ten
The Japanese word ten can mean "heaven", "above" or "celebration" and the dining experience at TEN modern Japanese restaurant is all of these things.

TEN approaches traditional Japanese dishes as if they were works of modern art. The superior ingredients are the building blocks of inspiration and the plates are crafted to please both the palate and the eye. Superior products are used and the seafood arrives daily from fishing auctions in Japan and Hawaii. Beyond the incredibly fresh sushi, the menu features a variety of hot and cold ala carte items and offers many choices for vegetarians as well as non-seafood eaters.

The bar menu boasts an extensive list of Sake, carefully selected in conjunction with specialty importers and a prominent Sake sommelier. Ten also features an extensive wine list, and specialty cocktails using unique ingredients such as the "Ten" which is comprised of sake, vodka, aloe juice, and sweet Japanese plums.

Diner Reviews
  • "Dinner on Saturday . It was myself, my husband and our daughter. Both my daighter and I have dinned with you over a dozen times. We love your atmosphere and food. Saturday was disappointing, waiter seemed very rushed, too long for dirnks, food overall was good, chicken yakitori was cold and dry."

  • "We've eaten here many times....it's always good. A family favorite!"

  • "Great food but the waiter was somewhat rude and ambivalent to us. The hostess was also very aloof. So, I'd love to back for the sushi but hope that the wait staff could learn a thing or two."

  • "I dined at Ten for the first time recently, despite having lived in and around C'ville for a long time - and had to ask myself why I had waited so long! The food was outstanding, and the portions average to generous. The service was excellent - attentive, friendly, helpful and reserved all at once. The sushi was fresh, and the selection adequate - a good range of "standard" selections, and a few gems (like fresh sea urchin, monkfish liver, and marinated tuna). Ten's sake selection is amazing - and the variety is superb. The decor is elegant and airy (they've got 20ft ceilings...), without being uncomfortable. We reserved a table, and I would recommend asking for a booth if you can. One tiny downside - the price tag is a bit rich, too..."

  • "The quality of the fish was good, but the presentation was not that good. The atmosphere wasn't good. The service was fair. Very over priced. I wouldn't recommend it."

  • "And great service! Our server was helpful, attentive and just generally nice. She, along with the tasty food (waygu beef roll, chesapeake roll, ten salad, other sushi and apps) and chic atmosphere, made for a great ladies night out for five women celebrating a special occasion."

  • "This is the only place in Charlottesville where I truly trust the sushi and the chefs. Everything they offer is beautifully arranged, flavorful and well arranged. The flavors complemented each other perfectly. It's a little pricey, but you really do get what you pay for and it's worth every penny!"

  • "Great food and drinks. Some of the best sushi in town. Don't pass up dessert, the coffee and donuts are excellent."

  • "I love how Ten carefully and tastefully crafts all of their rolls. The waiters are so attentive and friendly. Always a wonderful experience at Ten!"

  • "TEN delivered on my expectation. The calamari starter was fantastic, and all three sushi/sashimi plates we ordered turned out wonderfully. The service was top notch, and the overall dining experience was awesome. This restaurant is on the expensive side, but for a special occasion, it is most definitely worth it."

  • "Lobster tempura is the bomb. I'd say the sushi is pretty tradition. It's delicious. Good place for a date night; I'd recommend a reservation, the place is a popular spot."

  • "Four of us visited TEN on a Friday night - $36 Price fix meal with $1 per plate to a local charity. Great menu- Loved the sashimi and sushi. Noodle bowl and Tuna entrees were superb. Did not have the recommended Rose to per the menu, so provided a complimentary upgrade. Gotta love that. Have eaten here before- but can'tt afford to eat here often. They never disappoint, but a three course meal for $36 was a bargain!"

  • "Ten is great! The whole experience was simply amazing. I have waited a long time to see what the buzz was about and always wondered if it was legit. Oh man, it is one of the best meals I have had in Charlottesville. So good."

  • "Cannot beat the variety of sake, and freshness of the sashimi an/d sushi. Creative and delicious choices. That said, all of the cooked items were too salty. Be prepared to pay more than many Charlottesville restaurants. Pricy even during restaurant week. We plan to try happy hour sometime when the outside patio is reopened."

  • "Ten is the best Sushi in Charlottesville, and your wallet knows it. Great for dates, not great for groups unless you've got an expense account."

  • "one of the best in Charlottesville. when we are thinking of a special occasion place or to host out of towners Ten is always one of the first places to come to our mind. as always we had a great dinner with friends recently during restaurant week."

  • "All aspects of the experience were amazing. The real highlight was our server."

  • "The food was amazing, but they seemed to be a bit disorganized when it came to service, it took almost 15 minutes to get drinks ( I would understand if it was an Apple bees, but when I'm leaving with a tab for 2 people over $100, I expect top north service). But even with the service being so-so...the food is totally worth it."

  • "Went for Restaurant Week to check out TEN since it is consistently rated the best sushi in Charlottesville. Checked out the menu online prior, and found it very confusing. Asked the waiter some questions upon arrival and found the answers equally as confusing. Generally this seemed to be the problem - TEN is very good a making their food sound awesome, with an extensive list of ingredients listed in Japanese but it turns out some dishes were nothing more than tuna with rice, or just ramen. And in generally the food was bland. The fish did not have a ton of taste, and neither the waiter nor the person who delivered the food told us which items were which. Also wish they had put more sushi rolls in the menu options."

  • "Nice selection of different kinds of toros, great selection of Asian bars and wines, nice ambience and lighting, attentive and attractive staff but very expensive even by New York City/San Francisco standards. The fish is clearly high quality, but I don't understand how the rent and supply and demand principals justify the price. Given the expenses of the restaurant, it'd also be sensible to have more than 1 working computer - perhaps give some type of i-pod device to all waitresses to take orders and look up reservations."

  • "Ten was a true treat! Divinely prepared food, and a drink list you don't want to miss. Roz was an attentive server and was helpful navigating an otherwise-overwhelming sake list. Very confusing as it is mostly in Japanese, but Roz chose some very good ones for a sake flight. Entire staff worked seamlessly. Food was out of this world. Avocado tempura and hanger steak are exceptional values and the Poke Don was worth the price. Rolls are generous, left feeling happy. Atmosphere and ambiance made the night a truly memorable one. We will return to Ten."

  • "Cville has many excellent offerings. Ten used to be one of them. I have been here many times before and eagerly looked forward to a return. I used to recommend it to anyone and everyone. But now their portions appear to have shrunk, their quality seems to have gone down, and their service is poor. Also some of the imagination seems to have gone out of the place (i.e., the specials are less "special"). We spent an outrageous sum of money for two people on five dishes and two glasses of wine and still left unsatisfied... I will be pursuing the many other options available in Cville. Perhaps the best evidence of a problem is that on a Saturday night at 730 the place was only half full..."

  • "Excellent assortment of food. Love the tempura (especially lobster and haricot vert) as well as sushi. I come here at least once every time I am in Charlottesville."

  • "On our way out we asked "where-of the name 'Ten'?" The showed the Japanese Character that is the restaurant name and said it is the symbol of the number 10, above, heaven and perfection. They said it was chosen because it is one flight above their other restaurant. The other attributes are aspirational. The food was very good, with some real creativity - the service exceptional - we understand the sake selection is superb, but we don't drink, lots of grape wines as well."

  • "This is a favorite spot for my nieces and I. We love the food. We have food allergies and feel perfectly safe eating there. The service is always great but this time it was really exceptional. Thanks Ten!"

  • "Great place but very expensive. We only go there on special occasions. Love the food, but seating and service are not always the best. Can be crowded so recommend making a reservation. Great drinks and food. Might be a nice place to go and just sit at the bar to order a drink for a girls night."

  • "I visited this place for a first time for a date. I heard a very good opinions about the restaurant, as one of the best places in CVILLE. It is certainly one of them, however it did not stand up to my overall expectations. I have been in many sushi restaurants around the world, and as the interior design is on a rather good level, food is not. The rice was far from proper, not sticky as it supposed to be = nigiri + maki quite easily came apart. On the other hand, I cannot say anything bad about the fish part of sushi, as it was good. Concerning the drinks, I was positively surprised by a nice wine/drink menu, as well as their quality. In overall, it's top CVILLE place to eat, but don't expect to be really best. To pricey for that quality."

  • "This was our second lackluster experience in the last month or so. While the meal was OK - there was nothing outstanding as we'd become accustomed to over the years. I could nit-pick here, but will save that for private feedback. At least they've reinvigorated their sake selection."

  • "This was the first time my boyfriend and I have ever been to the restaurant, and we couldn't have had a better evening. The server Zach was very knowledgable. We went with almost all of his recommendations based on our preferences. The atmosphere was amazing. AND we even were surprised with a special anniversary dessert on the house!"

  • "The candles an dim lighting set the tone for a romantic ambiance. My husband and I had our anniversary dinner here (we are out of towners) and were very pleased! The sushi rolls were excellent, the service was fast and friendly. We ordered a few of the specials recommended to us by our server and were glad we took his suggestion. Overall great- would def reccomend, u won't be disappointed!"

  • "Celebrating our 6 month anniversary, we decided to have a romantic night out. Found Ten on the Internet and decided to give it a try. The items ordered arrived in good time and their presentation was just as outstanding as their flavors. Truly was an awesome and enjoyable experience! Dining area filled quickly and was a little loud for a romantic dinner and the water glass that was first brought out was cracked, but otherwise a great meal! I loved the Chesapeake Roll! I would recommend Ten to anyone who loves sushi or samishi!"

  • "Ten is always a great food and conversation experience. The service was great, food impeccable and infused with great energy. We kept having people we knew stop by the table wishing they could get in, but the wait was long on a Friday night. I view this as a good sign, as well as a sign to get reservations at least a week in advance. Make sure to ask your server for a recommendation for sake, especially if you are not a sake drinker. It dramatically improves the experience!!!!"

  • "I booked this restaurant several weeks in advance for 4 people when we were travelling to Charlottesville. When we arrived we discovered it was on the second floor with a lot of steps and no handicapped access. Our guest of honor uses a walker and has limited mobility. It was really embarassing and put quite a damper on the evening. When I went upstairs I discovered they had an elevator but it is not connected and they don't intend to change that. They should advertise that they are not handicapped accessible."

  • "Great food, great cocktail selection, good wines - great place for a fabulous dinner. Ambience falls slightly short of making it a great venue for special nights, but food will compensate. ."

  • "Our rolls were made with rice that was not cooled so they we loose. Also I'm pretty sure the spicy tuna had ketchup on it. The reviews for this restaurant seem to be based on the ambiance and the expectation that the food will be delicious when in fact the sushi is just not that good. Definitely not NY grade. Doesn't even approach Toyko grade"
