Diner Reviews
  • "We've eaten at Tempo many times. Food always very good, and nice presentation. This time our group had seafood, veal, pasta and salads, all excellent. We had a very good bottle of wine with the meal. However, the noise level is high,.and tables are close together."

  • "Tempo is always a good choice for typical Italian dishes. Our choices -- pasta all puttanesca and cavatelli all'amatriciana -- were well executed -- the former especially highly flavored (a plus), the latter more subtle (perhaps because the pancetta had yielded a lot of its flavor in the cooking of the sauce). Appetizers a bit more uneven. Carpaccio was somewhat overwhelmed by garlicky oil. The potato-crayfish torta special was not a success -- a rather greasy patty of mashed potato with tiny crayfish bits that added little flavor. The chief merit of the wine list is the extremely reasonable price of the wines. Service good, there when needed for the most part. Still far and away the best choice for dining from Old Town on out Duke Street."

  • "The food and service are consistently very good. We go back time and time again and are never disappointed with the food or the service. I would definitely recommend it!"

  • "My family has come here for at least 2 or 3 years now, for events like treating visiting relatives and friends, to just going to have a night out. The food here has been consistently very good, and the atmosphere is also nice. There are two rooms, the main dining room and a smaller room with a lower ceiling. We've not been there when live music was going on, but both rooms have reasonably tight acoustics and you can hear each other while you talk. The smaller room's tighter acoustics can be a problem if you have people elsewhere in the room talking loudly, that happened to us once. But that's not the restaurant's fault. Wait staff is usually very attentive. And if you succumb to temptation easily, don't ask to see the dessert tray!"

  • "Food and service were all fabulous! All 3 of us enjoyed the appetizer (mussels were amazing), our entrees and the chocolate bread pudding for dessert. Service was terrific. A great find!!!"

  • "Tempo never fails to deliver excellent food, from start to finish. Definitely recommended for couples, and small groups of adults. (I've never taken my daughter here, but I don't get the feeling this is a place for small children! Keep it in the list for "date night".)"

  • "The food is consistently excellent. Varied menu, wonderful desserts! I go there frequently with "ladies who lunch" and it is our top choice."

  • "We've enjoyed the low-key ambiance and nearby location of TEMPO for years, so this may be an aberration, but Sunday brunch was so disappointing. For a decidedly small, intimate space to interject a singer with microphone/amp was too much. The acoustics don't lend themselves to such amplification. We've noticed this same phenomenon at Sunday Brunch at Indigo Landing as well. Could barely hear conversation across the table. Service was rushed. One order was incorrect. We expect to return, some day, for a mid-week lunch, but if the service is still off, we're done. :-("

  • "Some of the best Northern Italian food in Alexandria. The dessert tray is to die for. The "art" is Andy Warhol light, and I cannot stand him to start with. My wife can never get over it was a gas station but loves the food. Some of the best Northern Italian food in Alexandria."

  • "Even though a large group was lunching when I was, the separate dining room for groups made it possible for my friend and me to have a quiet conversation. The butternut squash soup is wonderful and I always enjoy a veal dish when I go there."

  • "Tempo brunch was good -- and entertainer was really good. He sang songs from yesteryear. Very easy going. Much appreciated."

  • "As always, the food is outstanding. Space, however, is limited with tables very close to each other and the noise level on the loud side. Service can be improved. Water refills and additional rolls are not always offered and if you ask, others in your party are often overlooked. That aside, food here is a gold standard with many of it's dishes including Calamari Salad, Frutti de Mare, Soft Shell Crabs (when in season), and Tiramisu."

  • "Tempo is a great neighborhood joint with amazing food and a relaxed ambiance. Portions are sensibly sized so you can enjoy 4 courses without feeling stuffed."

  • "We enjoyed a very nice going-away dinner at Tempo on a Thursday evening. We were about 10 minutes early for a 7:00 p.m. reservation but were seated immediately even though the dining room was full. The atmosphere was very jolly with three tables celebrating birthdays, which brightened the entire place. We started with a round of cocktails and Oysters Rockefeller to share, which was very tasty. My spouse had salmon, and I asked our server to surprise me with any one of the five veal scallopini variations that were on the menu that night (three on the regular menu, two on special). I was delighted with the margherita version accompanied by a Peroni. We enjoyed chocolate pecan pie for dessert. Service was attentive. A very nice dinner!"

  • "We have been to Tempo a number of times and continue to return because of the excellent food, especially the seafood. Service has always been excellent. We never hesitate to recommend Tempo to friends and individuals invested in an fine dining experience in a very comfortable neighborhood restaurant."

  • "Went on a Monday night with my sister-in-law. She'd never been here before. She was very impressed. We passed on the Monday night dinner special (3 course dinner for 2 plus a bottle of house wine for something like $65) and ordered off the menu. Our waitress pointed us to the stuffed mushrooms, which we shared. We each had the steak with Gorgonzola sauce. Both dishes were excellent. Service was attentive and very pleasant. Ambiance: white table cloths; great art on the walls; an older, quieter crowd (which describes us, as well); all in a converted service station. Who could ask for more. If you haven't discovered Tempo, you should."

  • "The appetizers were good, we had stuffed mushrooms and crab with avocado. Compared to the entrees you did not get much for your money. I did not care for the entrée. I had veal parm and it was not a traditional veal parm. Under the veal were pieces of eggplant, which I did not like. As first glance you thought it was a nice portion of veal until you cut into the meat and found three small pieces of meat and 3 large pieces of eggplant. The sauce was more of a brown gravy and not a red sauce, hardly any mozzarrella. The meat was not breaded it was panfried. It was very disappointing. The desserts were fine, nothing to write home about."

  • "Tempo seemed to overbook for this special day. Had to wait 30 minutes past reservation time for a table. However, once seated had an enjoyable meal. Service was very good but a little slow due to the large crowd. Noise level was very high, making conversation difficult. We always enjoy ourselves at Tempo. So if you don't like crowds and noise, don't go on special days for the public, e.g., Valentine Day."

  • "Food was great. However, the second course of the Valentines Dinner took 35-40 minutes to arrive after we were done with the first course. Other than that, it was a good dining experience."

  • "It was very busy because of Valentines Day, but Tempo handled it well. It was a set menu (with choices)."

  • "You probably wouldn't expect much looking at the location and the outside of the bridling, but Tempo has really good food. I like that it's italian but also emphasizes seafood. And the service was very nice. Will definitely go back again."

  • "Had the fixed price menu for dinner on Valentine's Day. Even though the restaurant was very busy the service was very good and we didn't feel like we were being rushed. Portions were just right and overall quality was excellent. Will definitely come back."

  • "It was a lovely evening, but not what I would call "intimate." Our table was close enough to those on either side that we got to know our new-found neighbors rather well. Everyone had a great sense of humor and similar taste in food; so we were able to pass menu recommendations back and forth and even diamond ring shopping recommendations -- fabulous talk for Valentines Day! The service was excellent. We made a point of telling the waitress that we did not want to have a course served before our having finished the previous one, as had been our experience there in the past. She complied and we enjoyed a leasurely romantic Valentines dinner. The food was fresh and creative. Highlights included: shrimp with polenta and baby rack of lamb."

  • "Service was a little slower than usual this evening. Usually wait staff is very attentive. We were there with 2 kids and dinner took almost 2 hrs. This is not the usual for this restaurant, usually very attentive so just must have been an off night."

  • "This was my second visit to Tempo. It did not disappoint. The atmosphere is cozy but you do not feel crowded. The food and wine were excellent! A great neighborhood location. Everyone is very friendly and welcoming beginning with arrival. Knowledgeable wait staff always willing to assist with food or wine recommendations. I highly recommend Tempo to anyone looking for a great dining experience in the area."

  • "We took some friends whom we had not seen in over a year. We had a long and delightful conversation over food and wine, and they loved it (as did we)! One of our guests is gluten-intolerant, and the menu offered a wide range of choices -- plus the kitchen was accomodating and creative (how many places have gluten-free pasta ready to cook?). The service was pleasnat, unobtrusive, and patient, allowing us to chat away without feeling pressure to order or wolf the food down. The meals were all delicious (as usual)."

  • "This is not a hotspot for singles or young couples. This is a great food and service restaurant in a slightly out of the way location. The clientele are generally middle age, well- dressed couples. The food is well priced and well prepared. The wine list is extensive. The service is first class. Parking is free and plentiful."

  • "This unassuming restaurant hidden among strip malls in the Virginia suburbs is a great find! The New Year's Eve 4-course prix fixe at $65 was exceptional. The oysters were perfectly selected-- buttery rather than briny-- just to my taste. The lobster ravioli had a delicate freshly made pasta and a delicious lobster filling. The Chilean sea bass was cooked perfectly-- no mean feat when the restaurant was going full tilt with a full house. The rack of lamb was cooked medium rare just as requested, well-seasoned, and with none of the greasiness that sometimes accompanies this dish. Despite the full house, the service was efficient and rapid-- maybe just a bit too quick given the rush of New Year's Eve-- but overall a great experience!"

  • "We went on Christmas Eve and I expected that it would be busy and the food only so-so. They did get busy, but the food was excellent, beautifully prepared and fresh. I have been too this restaurant three times and highly recommend it. If you are looking for a hip, young crowd, this is not your place!"

  • "We ate here twice this year and it exceeded expectations both times. Great food with a lots of options due to a large specials list. All menu options seem to be updated on their website but they also have a couple daily specials that are not. Prices are great and reflect the location in this largely residential area vice a mile or so down the road in Old Town. The service each time has been consistent and FAST. I was really hungry when we got there and the warm roll was only going to delay that a few minutes. Thankfully the stuffed mushrooms arrived quickly thereafter--I just wish I had some of that bread left to soak up the accompanying cream sauce. Give it a try, your stomach and your wallet will be very happy."
