Chef Bill Telepan acclaimed former chef of the 3-star Judson Grill will serve the very best and freshest of seasonal foods impeccably prepared and paired with an interesting, hand- picked and reasonably priced selection of wines.   • "I always get a salad and fish at Telepan, and I've never been disappointed. The dessert leaves something to be desired, however. I don't think I've ever had a fabulous dessert at Telepan. This time I went during Restaurant Week and was pleased that Telepan had an extensive lunch selection to choose from. Chose the trout, and it came crisp on the outside, tender in the inside. Perfect. Salad was little too salty. The "pop" chocolate, which sounded so tempting, was not so after first bite. Still, this is one of my favorite spots on the UWS."

  • "All of the dishes were exquisitely prepared. I had a special appetizer calamari dish that melted in my mouth and the monkfish for a main course that was perfectly done. Very impressive. The ambiance was very light and appealing and the waiter made helpful suggestions about the different menu options. Although we waited around for a little after completing our meal since we were going to a concert, we never felt like we were being rushed to leave the table."

  • "We came here for dinner several years ago and again for lunch this week. Both times, the food was carefully and healthfully prepared, with fresh ingredients, and lots of vegetables. It's been redecorated since we first came and it's pleasant, though we still found its ambience less satisfying than the food. Our waiter was quite negligent, maybe because he wasn't taking the lunch crowd seriously? He didn't come to the table for a long time, then didn't bring us a wine menu until we asked, by which time we were ready to order our food, so lingering over wine before lunch was out of the question. He didn't know which cheeses were on the cheese plate, he never asked if we wanted coffee, then he disappeared altogether without notice."

  • "Some of the best service I've had in NYC. The waiter took the time to explain every dish in detail and answered all our questions thoughtfully. The food was outstanding. My fiancée and I got the four course tasting menu. For the first course, we got the chilled tomato and red pepper soup and the lobster roll. Both dishes were excellent. I got the seafood combination dish for the second course and that was the highlight of the meal for me. The razor neck clams, little neck clams, shrimp, calamari, and squid ink pasta were all delicious. I'd go back just for that dish alone. My third course was the pork, which was good but not out of this world like the seafood dish. And the dessert was scrumptious. I'd go back for sure!"

  • "Was there for brunch. The place is dark and gloomy, lit with candles, with no natural light. It's a nice atmosphere for dinner, but terrible for brunch. Add to this the awfully hands off and blasé attitudes of the servers (we had to constantly hunt for our server to order another drink etc). Food is better than average but not terribly impressive."

  • "Very impressive...the food, the ambiance, the decor. It is more on the quiet side which is a rarity in Manhattan where restaurants are packed with people. At Telepan one can actually talk because there is no overwhelming music and there is actually enough space for two people to dine. Love the corner couch tables. Service is outstanding, fast and courteous. The food is perfect for someone who likes healthy meals. Everything is beautifully presented but the portions are a decent size. I had monkfish which was outstanding, mozzarella and polenta appetizer was amazing as well as pea pancakes. All in all, this is a truly special pre-theater spot and is a neighborhood gem in the area full of tourists."

The menu retains the signature of its owner and chef, Bill Telepan who for years has quietly championed the importance of local sourcing -- not as a marketing strategy but a desire for better, fresher, and sustainable ingredients. AS a result the menu changes often. And the food is delicious. The menu is flexible. Customers are welcome to have a small course or a feast. It is not informal, is not inexpensive, but it is welcoming to all. I like to sit at the bar or at a bar table.."

  • "Third visit with two mediocre and one great experience. Food is generally very good to excellent but misses are severe enough to spoil the experience ( halibut was way overdone). Wine list is excellent with many well priced bottles. Service ranges from professional and unobtrusive to amateurish to borderline rude...inexcusable! Ambience remains attractive with well spaced tables. Place is popular and buzzing."

I'd describe Telepan's decor as pristine & minimalist as opposed to comfy, cozy. In fact, it has a gallery feel - unexpected in a neighborhood of handsome, old brownstones. The service is attentive - almost overly so at times."

  • "I went with an old friend for her birthday...we shared an appetizer--chilled tomato soup (they thoughtfully divided it into two bowls for us). Then we shared a main course--an excellent pasta dish. The ingredients all tasted fresh and the dish was perfectly seasoned. The chef also sent an amuse bouche to begin the meal which was an interesting carrot soup with rhubarb. The waiter had asked our taste and recommended absolutely delicious wines (I had a glass of red; my friend had a glass of white) which greatly enhanced the meal. And for dessert, we shared madeleines, which were light and wonderful. The service couldn't have been better. Our only quibble was that the menu was rather limited for our tastes."

  • "We had great expectations for our brunch last Sunday after so many good reviews we read about this restaurant. We had a good time. The decoration really disappointed me. Everything look cheap, especially the chairs. The service was great, impeccable, and very professional and friendly. I had the smoked trout that was really good, but the spinach ravioli, even though had good flavor and texture, was salty. My son had the shrimp and grits, and the burger and he loved them. My mom and daughter tried the romaine salad and the entree trout and they said they were just ok. I don't think we will return. if a have to rate it from 0 to 30, I will give it: food/decoration/service, 21/19/26"

  • "4th of July so maybe kitchen was off. Ravioli over salted, over cooked; suckling pig had only one half inch of crispy skin and was otherwise pretty standard and expensive porkchop. Desert was good. Excellent knowledgable wine pairing though a bit too informative though some may like that. No compensation for ravioli problem. Potentially fine place but..."

  • "Lunch in this area is hit or miss––but we really enjoyed TELEPAN. The food was excellent––the portions small (good!) but extremely flavorful. (This is lunch, after all.) The menu original and interesting. We had space around our table and it was easy to be heard (not always possible in NYC)) although the restaurant was not full. We lingered on until 2:15 or so without the sense of being rushed. Example: the "preserved tuna" was truly interesting; a mixture of new and familiar tastes. The cold tomato soup was also appetizing: with small cherry tomatoes (sliced) making it more substantial in feel."

  • "Pre Lincoln Center in the rain! As pre-ballet did not gofor tasty menu..another time! Started with the smoked trout..took awhile to be served but when it arrived realized they must have been making the delicious, warm blini served with it! Delicious. Then had the pea pancake..the pancakes served with agnolotti, also pea with marscaone, mushrooms, spinach and pea puree...refreshing and tasty. Nicechoice of bread and yummy butter. Soft, good music, veggie art.."

  • "After disappointing $38 lunch at Jean-Georges Terrace last week, I finally got great pre-fix lunch for $32 here. I had Gazpacho for appetizer, trout for entrée, and panna cotta for dessert. All good :) If you don't want the dessert, then $28. I know I need to watch What I eat but I have no will power. Anyways, you don't have to wait until the Restaurant Week."

  • "Above average, usually dependable quality food. Service uneven--patronising rather than genuine interest in client's enjoyment. Request for quiet table one month prior ended up with table in path from main tables to kitchen. We were accommodated with better seating. Waiter distracted . Several times just standing at the corner of the room looking at the ceiling with no interest in checking diners needs. Chef very helpful preparing one dish for a non-garlic diner with delicious rearrangement of side dish."

  • "Let me start with saying that Telepan has been, and continues to be, one of my absolute favorite restaurants in Manhattan. Food is excellent and the service is outstanding. This last visit, however, had one sour note--my appetizer was just not good. The mozarella had the texture of rubber. In contradistinction, my nephew's appetizer was delicious as were both of our entrees. As always, I found a wine that was superb and the price very reasonable. We will return, of course; however, i will stay away from that mozarella!"
