I'd describe Telepan's decor as pristine & minimalist as opposed to comfy, cozy. In fact, it has a gallery feel - unexpected in a neighborhood of handsome, old brownstones.   • "We had great expectations for our brunch last Sunday after so many good reviews we read about this restaurant. We had a good time. The decoration really disappointed me. Everything look cheap, especially the chairs. The service was great, impeccable, and very professional and friendly. I had the smoked trout that was really good, but the spinach ravioli, even though had good flavor and texture, was salty. My son had the shrimp and grits, and the burger and he loved them. My mom and daughter tried the romaine salad and the entree trout and they said they were just ok. I don't think we will return. if a have to rate it from 0 to 30, I will give it: food/decoration/service, 21/19/26"

  • "I went with an old friend for her birthday...we shared an appetizer--chilled tomato soup (they thoughtfully divided it into two bowls for us). Then we shared a main course--an excellent pasta dish. The ingredients all tasted fresh and the dish was perfectly seasoned. The chef also sent an amuse bouche to begin the meal which was an interesting carrot soup with rhubarb. The waiter had asked our taste and recommended absolutely delicious wines (I had a glass of red; my friend had a glass of white) which greatly enhanced the meal. And for dessert, we shared madeleines, which were light and wonderful. The service couldn't have been better. Our only quibble was that the menu was rather limited for our tastes."

  • "4th of July so maybe kitchen was off. Ravioli over salted, over cooked; suckling pig had only one half inch of crispy skin and was otherwise pretty standard and expensive porkchop. Desert was good. Excellent knowledgable wine pairing though a bit too informative though some may like that. No compensation for ravioli problem. Potentially fine place but..."

  • "Lunch in this area is hit or miss––but we really enjoyed TELEPAN. The food was excellent––the portions small (good!) but extremely flavorful. (This is lunch, after all.) The menu original and interesting. We had space around our table and it was easy to be heard (not always possible in NYC)) although the restaurant was not full. We lingered on until 2:15 or so without the sense of being rushed. Example: the "preserved tuna" was truly interesting; a mixture of new and familiar tastes. The cold tomato soup was also appetizing: with small cherry tomatoes (sliced) making it more substantial in feel."

  • "Pre Lincoln Center in the rain! As pre-ballet did not gofor tasty menu..another time! Started with the smoked trout..took awhile to be served but when it arrived realized they must have been making the delicious, warm blini served with it! Delicious. Then had the pea pancake..the pancakes served with agnolotti, also pea with marscaone, mushrooms, spinach and pea puree...refreshing and tasty. Nicechoice of bread and yummy butter. Soft, good music, veggie art.."

  • "After disappointing $38 lunch at Jean-Georges Terrace last week, I finally got great pre-fix lunch for $32 here. I had Gazpacho for appetizer, trout for entrée, and panna cotta for dessert. All good :) If you don't want the dessert, then $28. I know I need to watch What I eat but I have no will power. Anyways, you don't have to wait until the Restaurant Week."

  • "Above average, usually dependable quality food. Service uneven--patronising rather than genuine interest in client's enjoyment. Request for quiet table one month prior ended up with table in path from main tables to kitchen. We were accommodated with better seating. Waiter distracted . Several times just standing at the corner of the room looking at the ceiling with no interest in checking diners needs. Chef very helpful preparing one dish for a non-garlic diner with delicious rearrangement of side dish."

  • "Let me start with saying that Telepan has been, and continues to be, one of my absolute favorite restaurants in Manhattan. Food is excellent and the service is outstanding. This last visit, however, had one sour note--my appetizer was just not good. The mozarella had the texture of rubber. In contradistinction, my nephew's appetizer was delicious as were both of our entrees. As always, I found a wine that was superb and the price very reasonable. We will return, of course; however, i will stay away from that mozarella!"

  • "I was a bit disappointed in the service. My friend had made a few requests, such as more maple syrup, and had to ask a few times before it arrived. Not really a big deal. I had the chilled pea soup to start and it was delicious. I ordered the lumberjack. It was ok. I would prefer more egg options on a brunch menu. The smoked trout appetizer was also fantastic."

The Seviche style trout was delicious. Oysters and chilled pea soup nothing special. The pork, duck breast and monkfish were done to perfection. Unfortunately, the lobster bolognese was bland and the pasta undercooked. Blueberry turnovers with sorbet was an enjoyable ending."

  • "As an UWS'er for the last 18 months I had read about Telepan but just never made the reservation. Friends were arriving from out of state and suggested we select a restaurant we'd wanted to go to, but hadn't yet. Perfect opportunity. Upon entering one is immediately struck by the calming decor and incredibly relaxing atmosphere; colors, decor, quietness. Service is just impeccable from the moment you arrive; thoroughly attentive, yet invisible when appropriate. A wonderful wine list starts the evening, with some new vineyards/selections the sommelier will be required to help with. The food offerings are so diverse that all 4 persons opted for different first & main courses, allowing us to see the broad skills of the kitchen. All fabulous!"

But more than once we have been reminded that weekends tend to reflect a dip in quality of preparation in the direction of sweet and stodgy. Even if we eat at a non-rush hour, the "brunch" tendency to saute everything in a vat of butter within an inch of its life crops up. Nice with French toast maybe, but horrible treatment for a delicate piece of fish."

  • "We have enjoyed Telepan since it's opening, but this was a shocking disappointment. The food was not tasty, was overcooked, lacked subtlety. The major problem was the pork main course which was cooked until shoe leather. The lamb sausage was overcooked, dry and tasteless. The lobster bolognese, carrying a supplemental charge, was a major "so what?". The gemelli was salty. The pastry of the peanut brittle dessert, an old favorite, was soggy instead of being a crisp base to offset the ganache and the ice cream. Someone in the kitchen is going thru the motions, while talking on a cell phone. Save your money."

  • "Have had several wonderful dinners here but don't go for weekday lunch. Extraordinarily slow service. Despite resounding recommendation from waiter, the burger was completely dried out and although I prefer a flavorful burger this one was so salty it was almost inedible, fries over cooked, onion rings undercooked. The cheese plate that came with the pre-fixe had two almost microscopic teensy pieces of cheese on it and a lot of empty plate -- don't include it in a pre-fixe if you can't provide enough food. Just not good."

Today we waited 45 minutes for confirmed reservations, only to receive sub-par, uninspiring dishes and inattentive service. This West Side "staple" is simply not worth the price tag."

  • "My husband started with the shrimp and grits--the shrimp were rubber. I started with chicken sausage and watercress--the watercress was past its prime. But the big disappointment was my trout: it was grey, it was bland, it was demoralizing, and served with undressed spinach and a few teeny tiny pieces of the advertised bacon. In choosing Telepan for brunch, we were hoping to have a terrific Telepan meal at a more reasonable price. Instead we had a very poor meal for what turned out to be an unreasonable price. Oh, and the easy listening music was pretty annoying--like dining inside an elevator."

  • "A review described this place as the East coast's answer to Chez Panisse; since we worship at the temple of Alice Waters, we booked a table and went along the same night - very different from the weeks waiting to eat in Berkley. The food was all I had hoped, starting with a smoked trout with potato chive blini and sweet onion sour cream, I went on to a signature dish in the lobster bolognaise. It had all the depth of a Hazan ragu but with the lightest of ingredients - extraordinary. Duck with rhubarb and faro foie gras followed, perfectly executed. The service sucked, sycophantic, inauthentic and very TGIFridday - interrupting us to pat themselves on the back. Take a lesson from the silence of Michelin quality Le Gavroche staff please!"
