A word from TBD Restaurant
TBD {”to be determined”} is the philosphy behind our restaurant. Everything on the menu is determined by seasonal availability of local products. The result is a dynamic, frequently-changing menu cooked entirely by live fire in a custom Grillworks wood-burning hearth. Our beverage program complements the food with 18 beers on draft, 25 sherries by-the-glass, and "loophole" cocktails made from bitters, amaros and aperitifs. Reservations are recommended, though we gladly accept walk-ins for our bar & mezzanine.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "It is not exactly clear what the restaurant is trying to achieve. Tries to serve rustic food but with haute cuisine aspirations. Unfortunately, the result is rather forgettable. OK but not great food, service on the slow side, decor nothing special. I would not repeat."

  • "This restaurant has a large oak fired grill that is the signature of their food. It infuses most dishes with flavor in a positive way but the room needs a better ventilation and exhaust system. Despite the temperature outdoors at 9 PM being 65 F (it is San Francisco) the dining room was smoky and way too warm...and the front door was wide open. You walk out of the restaurant sweating and smelling like you just sat around a campfire. Why aren't smores on the menu? Its also a very loud room"

  • "Every dish was prepared with craft and utmost care, and all was stellar! Do not miss TBD! The wood burning stoves - which the chefs cook on in front of you, is wonderful to watch."

  • "My husband and I celebrated our anniversary at TBD. We both loved the prix fixe menu - we didn't have to worry about choosing dishes, and everything was wonderful, with seasonal ingredients highlighted perfectly. Ingredients were used in ways we'd never experienced before. The beverage pairings were spot-on and clever. Servers were friendly, informative, and the pace of the courses was perfect. We loved everything about TBD, and will definitely be back!"

  • "It was a bit of a gamble taking my elderly mother-in-law to this neighborhood spot, but we had a fabulous evening. I knew the food would be well-conceived, innovative, and interesting, and it did not disappoint. What made the evening particularly special was the gentle, courteous service, the enthusiasm of the young wait-staff for the food and the outstanding sherry list, and their gracious accommodation of our need for a relatively quiet table (tricky to achieve here, but they pulled it off). This is one of the most generous-spirited restaurants I know, in every respect."

  • "A can't miss stop on any SF eating excursion. Terrific food complimented by immaculate service."

  • "Great food. We thoroughly enjoyed all the dishes and would come back for the innovative menu. The grilled wild salmon with fig leaves was perfect. At first, I wasn't sure about the farm egg, but one bite had me wanting more. The brown butter almond cake with apricots and sea salt brittle was light and delicious. The service does not compliment the food."

  • "We had been looking forward to dinner here for months and were very disappointed. Difficult to decide between 1 & 2 stars because the food was really that poorly executed. We had the set menu with the beverage pairings. First, the beverage pairings after the first wine didn't work. Second, each course was disappointing except for the Bread and Avocado side dish. The appetizers were OK - apricot and fig starter featured 2 halves of a fig! The Fisherman's Stew was a very poor execution of something like Cioppino. The Grilled Pork Ribs were terrible - just barely cooked. The dessert - dry and unimaginative Tres Leches cake - served in 2 small jars for 4 people with a badly matched cocktail. The neighborhood is creepy vintage SOMA."

  • "Not only was the food artistic, it was amazingly delicious! The wine pairing was fantastic. We left everything up to the chef & was absolutely satisfied with every dish!"

  • "We were visiting San Fran and read about several new restaurants...one was TBD. It was wonderful! Our only surprise (and it was our fault for not doing a little more research) was that there really is only one prix fixe offering each night along with a few added ala carte options that are mostly sides and desserts. That said, we lucked out and the food did not disappoint..the service was wonderful and attentive. I would advise people who are considering a reservation to go online and check out the menu for the day just to be sure it is appealing. I'd love to go back...very different, unique combinations, prepared fresh and beautifully!!"

  • "We had the four course set meal to which we added the amazing corn with miso and josey bakers equally good bread with butter. The courses themselves were decent but other dishes needed significant work such as a dish of undercooked potatoes and a dessert with nearly uncooked tapioca pearls. The biggest problem though is the incompetent wine matching; wines and beer were simply not compatible with the food and that just doesn't fly in this town. Lots of potential in this place but some work needs to be done to fix these serious issues."

  • "Everything at TBD is absolutely amazing - the food, the drinks, the atmosphere, the philosophy. The tasting menu allows you to sample the menu with very healthy portions. The staff is very helpful in navigating the menu and drink selection. We plan to return many times! Note that if you're sitting upstairs, you'll probably leave smelling a bit like you've been at a campfire... But it's SOOOO worth it!"

  • "The food is very good at TBD; inventive combinations resulting in deep and creative flavors. Watching the line work the fire and prepare the food is quite entertaining. The space and scene are convivial, though service can be a bit cloying. . Wine prices are as ridiculous as most places in the city. Disappointed that I will likely not be going back much as they are moving to a fixed price menu; it's a casual place and the fixed price format does not seem appropriate. "

  • "Good ambience, excellent service. Could use more vegetarian options. Not a single vegetarian entree on the day we were there - disappointing for an SF restaurant."

  • "Went to TBD on a whim and it was a good time out. The food was on point and service was fine. I wish they had a bit more of a dessert selection although we did not partake. The Lamb dish was great."

  • "Looked for a place to eat before a show at the Warfield & TBD was a great find. Arrived 30 mins late due to traffic, but called ahead and they were so cool about it, got us seated and fed within 45 mins to make it to our show on time. Didn't feel rushed & was able to enjoy 8 dishes & drinks. Sat across from the grills. warm, but really fun watching the preparations. Expected heavy, smokey BBQ flavors, but pleasantly surprised with the subtle depth of flavors that came through in all of the dishes. Josey Baker's seaweed bread was an all time fave, but loved every dish - cauliflower, mussels, beef, greens w/pork belly & dehydrated onions, lamb and a salmon mousse w/radishes. If they served past 10, would have gone back post-show for dessert! "

  • "Food was amazing. If we had been served well, it would have been a 5-star review. Waitress screwed up our order twice, convincing us to order another bottle while we waited and then never put in the order. To top it off they messed up the dessert . No one bothered to take off the items or reduce the meal price at all. Pretty disappointing for what is supposed to be a top restaurant in SF"

  • "It showed up on open table as "$$" for me. That's because it's essentially a tapas place (they say they're "family style") with $20 dishes. The waitress recommended my petite gf and I (I'm not a huge guy) get 5-6 dishes at least. We spent about $140 all in, including $10 8 oz. beers. The food itself was good. Overpriced but good. There is a huge wood burning oven. My athsma was acting up and my clothes still reek of smoke and it's been 24 hours. We both had to take a shower before bed to get the smoke out of our hair. Id be surprised if this place stays open another 6-12 months. So many other places in the city you could go for $140 for 2. Again though the biggest problem was the $$ rating, get your sh*t together open table!"

  • "Cute, functional concept and the campfire thing worked. Food above average, not amazing. Only one dish (sea bass) was truly awful. Not worth detailing other dishes because the menu changes. Our waitress couldn't answer basic questions, and COMPLETELY oversold us. You get one chance to order -- you cannot order and then if it's not enough, order more. She told us we needed 3 more dishes. Worst advice. We should've trusted our instincts. Gluttonous mass of food, we couldn't finish. Ended up paying about $350 for 4, including 3 drinks. At the end of the meal, we were given a different waitress -- better, less shaky, but she asked us to contribute to a charity she supports. Dude! We should've just donated those 3 extra dishes to her charity."

  • "Was super excited to finally try tbd but am sad to report the food is simply not AQ quality. Good wine but overpriced (although this is obviously standard in the city, I never really get used to it). Service was impeccable and soft serve dessert was amazing."
