A word from Taxim
Taxim, which is located in Chicago's Wicker Park neighborhood, features regionally-inspired Greek dishes paired with an all-Greek wine list. The stunning dining room is fitted with soaring 16-foot ceilings, travertine marble floors and dramatic Byzantine-style lamps and artwork.
The restaurant was chosen as one of the Best New Restaurants in May 2010 by Chicago magazine and was chosen as one of Chicago's Best New Restaurants in 2009 by the Chicago Tribune and the Chicago Reader. Additionally, Taxim's housemade yogurt with young favas and lamb confit was selected as one of the Best Bites of 2009 by the Chicago Reader, the house-cured sardines were mentioned in Time Out Chicago's 2009 "100 Best Things We Ate (and drank) This Year" feature, and the wood-grilled octopus was selected as 2010's "Best New Dish" by Chicago magazine. Additionally, chef-owner David Schneider appeared on the Food Network's "Iron Chef America" in April 2011 going head-to-head with Iron Chef Cat Cora.Continued

  • "Seriously this place was a fantastic find. We had a couple of small plates (both wonderful though I can't recall the names), lamb chops with this wonderful quinoa, raisin and almond side, Greek coffee (had no idea what it was when we ordered it but wonderful!), and a dessert that was worth the wait for it to be freshly made just for us. Will definitely visit this place again when back in Chicago!"

  • "It was a little too loud, especially since we had a waiter who's primary language was not English and he didn't speak very loud. For the food being a little overpriced, they could have explained some of the items better, since they brought out an item a second time that we did not want; we are confused since all the names were in Greek."

  • "We picked this place because we were in the mood for Greek food, but came with no expectations. The service and food were both great! The shrimp in grape leaves was fresh and flavorful. The spicier dishes were lively but not overwhelming. The duck gyros were rich but not greasy. The waitress provided a couple of recommendations for the Greek wines (which I didn't know anything about) and offered tastes of a couple. First rate and fairly priced."

  • "This was such a wonderful alternative to the Halsted fare. Reminded us of our meals in Greece--especially the sea bass, which was outstanding and the octopus--very tender and perfectly seasoned. I was not a fan of the duck gyro--I found it too heavy. Wine was fantastic--fun to get to know a new region's offerings. Will definitely return again!"

  • "I made a reservation on Open Table for a time slot that was a little later than I wanted due to tickets for a show. I called the restaurant, spoke to David who said that the hostess would call me back that day. Much to my surprise, she did! Not only was she able to accommodate my request, she was willing to help choose a comfortable table. In a world of busy restaurants and customer service, Taxim went above and beyond on customer service and by the way.....the food was awesome."

  • "This ended up being a late night reservation, and I didn't have high hopes. The food was excellent, cooked perfectly and infused with the wonderful flavors that only come out of a quality Greek kitchen. The selection of only Greek wines was a nice touch, and quite tasty. Only one caution, the portions and the prices seem a little out of whack, but you do get what you pay for in terms of quality."

  • "Appetizers: hummus (always delicious) & the lamb kebabs (nicely spiced ground meat, roasted cherry tomatoes and yogurt.) Yum. Entrees: the chicken (always delicious) and the pork shoulder with chestnuts and barley rusk. The pork and chestnuts were flavorful, with a warm Christmassy taste for a cold night. (But the rusk could have used just a little more juice/sauce to soften it just a bit more.) We love coming here for the wine list -- only Greek wines, mainly Greek varietals but also some European grapes grown in Greece. The wines are very good and pair beautifully with the dishes. The servers are always willing to help you decide which glass or bottle to try. Don't hesitate to try something different."

  • "My boyfriend an I were unable to go out for valentines day. Therefore, we had a late valentines date at Taxim. It was beautiful! Very romantic and the food was delicious. My boyfriend is a picky eater but he loved your lamp chops! Excellent work. Serice was beyond great! Wine was delicious too! Will definitely come here again!"

  • "I love Taxim. I am so tired of the standard Greek food you get on Halstead. This has so many other options but still with traditional flavors. They also have some wonderful vegetarian options. Usually they have the best hummus I have ever tasted but when I went there on 2/15 they must have been out of the fresh green chickpeas as this hummus lacked the tang that it usually has. Just tasted like the typical stuff. I hope they are not changing it and it was just a fluke. The service can also be a little slow. I think they are understaffed and certainly not a lack of effort on the part of the staff as they are very very busy. I do love this place and have been about 5 times."

  • "We had a great dinner at Taxim on Saturday night. Delicious greek small plates that are inventive - definitely NOT your Halsted Street Style Greek. The wine list is notable because of the deep selection of reasonably priced, yet quite delicious, Greek wines that pair wonderfully with the food. The servers will give you guidance if you're not familiar with Greek wines. All in all a great experience."

  • "We had all small plates and it ended up being quite economical, which doesn't always happen with a lot of small plates. Everything was good-the pomegranate was great as were the fish and the lamb. The yoghurt dessert was really surprisingly outstanding and so different from my daily yoghurt. It seemed really noisy at first but we got used to it and we were stuck in almost the exact middle. The waiter was very good--attentive and helpful but not obtrusive."

  • "I came here for date night with my boyfriend. We made a reservation about 2 hours before coming in. The ambiance was great, quiet enough that we could hear each other, but not so quiet that you felt like everyone around could hear your conversation. Our waitress was knowledgeable and helped direct us with the wine & food menus. We shared 3 small plates and 1 large, which was more than enough food. We were careful to order different things from the menu as their were a lot of similarities with many. Food was reasonably priced and appropriate to the caliber of food and portion sizes. I was there with just one, but there were also a few larger tables. I could see that this place would also work for larger groups . I would go back anytime!"

  • "I met up with 5 friends here and had a great time. We shared several apps and 2 entrees so we could try a bunch of dishes. The beet salad, duck gyro, octopus and lamb dishes are outstanding! Only small issue I had was that our reservation was at 8:30 and we were seated 45 min later. However, we did wait at the bar, so it wasn't too bad."

  • "I loved everything we had. The octopus was melt in your mouth. We found it by having an opening on Open Table on a Saturday night for a reservation. We went early (6:45) because nothing was available until much later according to Open Table. I was surprised that by the time we left, the place never did fill up so not sure how reservations were planned to be filled. The restaurant deserves to be packed."

  • "With all the restaurants opening and closing, it's hard to remember restaurants that have been around for a while. Taxim needs no hype, it is fantastic all around. Every dish ordered was great, the decor simple, tasteful, and creates the perfect holy Greek ambiance. Favorites include goat-stuffed quince, grilled octopus, lamb shoulder, and the absolute standout: seafood soup with sunchokes - do not order the small size, you will want every last drop. For our anniversary, they brought a complimentary bottle of sparkling wine and dessert - it doesn't beat that."

Next time I might order two. The chicken as a main dish was recommended and it was delicious. The chocolate dessert was just ok but overall it was a really tasty meal."

  • "Just fantastic. We focused on the small plates to sample a wider variety and I don't regret that decision. Some of the standouts where the beet salad and the eggplant purée; we nearly licked the plates clean. The lamb in a quince was tasty and unique. Passing was perfect. I didn't feel rushed, a couple plates would come out and we had lots of time to sample and enjoy. I have already recommended this restaurant to a few friends and fully intend to return."

  • "Food: I ordered the Duck Gyros. For a place whose specialty is supposed to be duck, you could have fooled me. The duck was too over-seasoned with what I think was thyme. Moreover, our server oversold the duck fries to me as "amazing." They were boring fires. Service: The waitstaff was friendly; especially the 4 different people who waited on me. I never was too sure if the women who identified herself as my server was indeed my server. From the time I ordered until my entree arrived, it took 55 minutes; which is fine. But it took 30 minutes to get my appetizer. This place is nice, but certainly not let me take almost two hours to eat nice. Ambiance: It's small, quaint, and pretty charming inside. Don't sit by the front in the winter."

  • "The food was fresh with well- balanced flavors. Our party ordered a wide array of dishes (both small plates and entrees) and there wasn't a dud amongst the group. The service was ok. It was difficult to get the attention of our server to order more wine and drinks. In addition, our server put the wrong entrée order in for one of our guests. She did her best to recover by providing another dish for her to eat, however it is ALWAYS awkward when everyone has their meal and we are waiting for the last one. We finished our food before her dish was delivered. I would be willing to try again as the quality of the dishes we very good."

  • "Well done full flavored menu of small and large Greek and Mediterranean dishes. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and pescetarian diets easily accommodated. Beautiful clean understated ambience with very good, attentive service. Oak wood grilled proteins, fresh fish, pork, lamb, vegetable, and dairy all found on the menu. In house made pastries, bread, sausage, yogurt and more. Most of the menu is unavailable elsewhere. Bring your appetite, sense of adventure, and be prepared to pay commensurate with the quality of food and presentation, as well as service. Decidedly in the special occasion category price point. Miranda provided excellent menu guidance, displayed patience, and gave attentive, unobtrusive service with a smile."

  • "We went on a Monday night and were surprised to find that there was plenty of space, as there were only a few other diners. They let us stay as long as we liked. Since we were entertaining out of town guests, this was a special treat for us. There was plenty of on-the-street parking, too. All the food was freshly cooked. The octopus appetizer is delicious. I had the duck entrée, which was super. The desserts are also delicious. Our waitress was very helpful in describing each dish and making recommendations. We are definitely going back."

  • "Small plates and wine were great. The restaurant was so hot though that we were sweating through our clothes and had to step outside for air. Small plates came out rapid fire at once but then there was a very long lapse before dinner without much attention from the waitor. Dessert was good, and big enough to share among 4. The night got bad when my friend's wallet was taken from her bag. Turns out two other tables next to us got hit too. One might argue it's not the restaurant's fault there was a thief in the house, but their blatant disinterest in the whole thing was unsettling. The majority of staff cared so little that we suspected it was an inside job. If you go, keep your wallet close and stick to small plates, dessert and wine."
