A word from Taxim
Taxim, which is located in Chicago's Wicker Park neighborhood, features regionally-inspired Greek dishes paired with an all-Greek wine list. The stunning dining room is fitted with soaring 16-foot ceilings, travertine marble floors and dramatic Byzantine-style lamps and artwork.

The restaurant was chosen as one of the Best New Restaurants in May 2010 by Chicago magazine and was chosen as one of Chicago's Best New Restaurants in 2009 by the Chicago Tribune and the Chicago Reader. Additionally, Taxim's housemade yogurt with young favas and lamb confit was selected as one of the Best Bites of 2009 by the Chicago Reader, the house-cured sardines were mentioned in Time Out Chicago's 2009 "100 Best Things We Ate (and drank) This Year" feature, and the wood-grilled octopus was selected as 2010's "Best New Dish" by Chicago magazine. Additionally, chef-owner David Schneider appeared on the Food Network's "Iron Chef America" in April 2011 going head-to-head with Iron Chef Cat Cora.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "It is so nice to find a more modern inspired Greek menu with many creative options. Nice all Greek wine list that is affordable. The duck gyro really is awesome as others have said. Thankfully it is inventive to explore the Greek flavors and does not copy Halsted Street. Will go back again."

  • "Food like you haven't ever had before unless you've spent a season in Crete. Varied, innovative yet with a touchstone to tradition. You won't regret dining here."

  • "Some dishes are so incredibly good that you remember them days afterwards. The bulgar with lamb stock reduction, sprouted almonds, parsley and currents still haunts my waking hours. The wait staff will knowledgably guide you to a interesting bottle from the diverse selection of Greek wine."

  • "Consistently excellent food and good wine options. I've brought several people here and everyone has loved it."

  • "It was delicious and the service was wonderful. I enjoy a server that is knowledgeable, friendly and checks in during the right times. You don't have to come around every two minutes but once in a while and just being observant is appreciated. The food was delicious: fresh eggplant, quality capers and olive oil, fresh meats and yogurt sauces - it was all great. We had: crushed eggplant, the sardine, fried cauliflower [really good], lamb kabobs and pork sausage. I would definitely go back and try more items."

  • "Better and more original than the usual Greektown restaurants on Halsted St (although I like those too). Everything we had was excellent, especially the lamb shank w. orzo. Good wine list. Definitely would go again. We were there when the street outside was closed off by a noisy street fair, so we didn't get a fair read on what the normal vibe is."

  • "Finally a great Greek restaurant Chicago with a Greek wine list. Enjoy the homemade pita."

  • "Had dinner. Food was greasy and heavy. Had fish gyro. Fish itself was nice and fluffy, but wrapping fish was incased in was heavy with oil. Similar experience with appetizer."

  • "We both had lamb dishes and they were both exceptional! Still raving about the lamb chops. The flavors were amazing and very different from the norm. My biggest issue is that they sat us along the wall at a small 2-top and we had parties of 4 on either side of us. Tables were very close together so it does not make for a quiet dinner. I prefer restaurants where you are not sitting with strangers and have a bit more privacy. The food was worth it, but wish the seating was more comfortable."

  • "Have never had a bad meal here. Service staff is the best. Love any lamb dish, chicken, duck gyro, hummus, octopus, etc"

  • "four foodies ate octopus, dolmades, leek & dill phyllo, lamb with homemade greek yogurt. all excellent!"

  • "Four of us went and shared 5 small plates and 1 big plate and there wasn't a loser in the bunch. We had the best babaganoush ever, and I have had a LOT of babaganoush (it's called roasted eggplant on the menu); we had very, very tender octopus; we had amazing deep fried cauliflower; we had great artichokes; we had very tasty pork belly; and we had the 'fish gyro' which was sea bream fillets (kind of square; my husband called them the best fish sticks ever). Everything rocked! I have recommended it to a dozen people already and we're looking at our calendar to see when we can go back!"

  • "A perfect menu of flavor for both Veg and non-veg diners. Great service. Fantastic food. Great pairing wines to match."

  • "Food is outstanding. Waitress was very good at pairing our wine. The kitchen is INCREDIBLY SLOW SLOW SLOW SLOW. It took 45 minutes to get our mains. Plan accordingly. At the end of the evening the food was worth the wait, however, hey should have told us,."

  • "We ate all small plates and every one was better than the next. It was so nice to eat something different than the usual fare and so incredibly good. Highly recommended"

  • "Every bite and sip were delicious and the service was gracious, offered good order recommendations and was always well timed. I can't say enough good things!"

  • "We tried about 8 small plates but will return for large (sea bass, lamb chops, chicken ). Grape leaf-wrapped shrimp, tender octopus salad, roasted eggplant dip, squash fritters (falafel-like) were all outstanding. Some dishes never showed up but they corrected it. Fun place. "

  • "I made a reservation and we still waited about 20 minutes to get seated, when the table that they sat us has been clear before we even entered the restaurant. We sat for a while before we got water, place settings or a greeting from our waiter and it wasn't crazy busy. Maybe I have high standards because I used to work in the service industry, but for what I paid I didn't get my money's worth. Food was good, the bus boys were quick and my drink was stiff. Still... will not return."

  • "The food is delectable. The flavors are marvelous. The food is not limited to Greece, with Cypriot favorites also a part of the menu. Food is lovingly prepared with the freshest ingredients, making every dish something to savor. "

  • "As a Greek American and someone who studied in Greece, I'm picky about Greek food. Unlike the touristy mediocrity of Greektown, Taxim is the real deal, showcasing the authentic dishes and flavors that are lesser-known and regional. The Greek wine list has good variety, and the house cocktails are solid. Our favorite dishes were the fried cauliflower, squash meatballs, chicken, quail, and lamb chops, which were all complex and executed perfectly. The ambience is great, evoking the Middle Eastern influence seen in north and northeastern Greece. Our server was very knowledgeable about the menu, but could have used more enthusiasm. Taxim isn't cheap and the portions are modest, so it's not an everyday restaurant, but it is a true gem."

  • "This place is cute and the best Greek food outside of Greektown in Chicago. Nice ambiance and our server was fantastic. They have a great Greek wine list but the food is not particularly memorable. It seems like it's been toned down for the "Chicago" palate. The kokoretsi, or wood-grilled caul wrapped lamb offal, was perhaps the best dish. For starters, I also recommend the fire-roasted eggplant dip with black sesame seeds."

  • "Great food, but on a saturday night it is very noisy. It's hard to talk about the noise. Go on the week day and enjoy the food, service and ambience."

  • "For the past several years we have been going to a lot of theater in Wicker Park. We used to feel like there was no place good to eat in the area, and now we're aware of an abundance of options. Taxim, though, which we discovered relatively recently, is now our absolute favorite. We have had nothing which was not absolutely delicious, and between the small plates and large plates we've managed to try quite a few items. Recommended for both adventurous and not-so adventurous eaters--there's something for everybody."

  • "I would have completely given this place 5 stars if our service would have been more patient and not in such a bad mood and my initial cocktail wasn't $14 for a sparkling wine. The food is incredible and the atomosphere is really warm and inviting! I would highly recommend trying the fried califloour and the lentil soup! YUM!"

  • "It was a little too loud, especially since we had a waiter who's primary language was not English and he didn't speak very loud. For the food being a little overpriced, they could have explained some of the items better, since they brought out an item a second time that we did not want; we are confused since all the names were in Greek."

  • "We picked this place because we were in the mood for Greek food, but came with no expectations. The service and food were both great! The shrimp in grape leaves was fresh and flavorful. The spicier dishes were lively but not overwhelming. The duck gyros were rich but not greasy. The waitress provided a couple of recommendations for the Greek wines (which I didn't know anything about) and offered tastes of a couple. First rate and fairly priced."

  • "Seriously this place was a fantastic find. We had a couple of small plates (both wonderful though I can't recall the names), lamb chops with this wonderful quinoa, raisin and almond side, Greek coffee (had no idea what it was when we ordered it but wonderful!), and a dessert that was worth the wait for it to be freshly made just for us. Will definitely visit this place again when back in Chicago!"

  • "Dips/spreads were spot on. House made yogurt is a stand out. Lots of Greek wine! Octopus was delish. Expected more garlic pow with the beets and skordalia which was the only let down."

  • "This was such a wonderful alternative to the Halsted fare. Reminded us of our meals in Greece--especially the sea bass, which was outstanding and the octopus--very tender and perfectly seasoned. I was not a fan of the duck gyro--I found it too heavy. Wine was fantastic--fun to get to know a new region's offerings. Will definitely return again!"

  • "I made a reservation on Open Table for a time slot that was a little later than I wanted due to tickets for a show. I called the restaurant, spoke to David who said that the hostess would call me back that day. Much to my surprise, she did! Not only was she able to accommodate my request, she was willing to help choose a comfortable table. In a world of busy restaurants and customer service, Taxim went above and beyond on customer service and by the way.....the food was awesome."

  • "It was great! We had the best waitress, (blonde, Ukrainian) She gave us so many great recommendations and the Duck Gyros.. OOO baby!"

  • "We are Greek food "snobs"..very hard to please, and this place never disappoints. The flavors are out of this world! I have tried many things on the menu and love them all. One of my favorites are the shrimp wrapped in grape leaves, so unusual and delicious! This is an automatic go-to for us even though we live in the North suburbs. When we want outstanding Greek food, we venture to Taxim! DO NOT forget to have dessert..the loukoumades are our fave :)"

  • "I thought the restaurant was exceptional for ambiance and food. Not your normal Greek restaurant. Will go back."

  • "Appetizers: hummus (always delicious) & the lamb kebabs (nicely spiced ground meat, roasted cherry tomatoes and yogurt.) Yum. Entrees: the chicken (always delicious) and the pork shoulder with chestnuts and barley rusk. The pork and chestnuts were flavorful, with a warm Christmassy taste for a cold night. (But the rusk could have used just a little more juice/sauce to soften it just a bit more.) We love coming here for the wine list -- only Greek wines, mainly Greek varietals but also some European grapes grown in Greece. The wines are very good and pair beautifully with the dishes. The servers are always willing to help you decide which glass or bottle to try. Don't hesitate to try something different."

  • "My boyfriend an I were unable to go out for valentines day. Therefore, we had a late valentines date at Taxim. It was beautiful! Very romantic and the food was delicious. My boyfriend is a picky eater but he loved your lamp chops! Excellent work. Serice was beyond great! Wine was delicious too! Will definitely come here again!"

  • "Taxim's menu offers a variety of small and large plates. With another couple, we shared a half dozen small plates and some seafood stew. Everything was prepared beautifully, creatively composed, and delicious. Service was attentive and helpful, and the room is lovely. We are delighted to have another really good restaurant to add to our Wicker Park rotation."
