A word from Taxim
Taxim, which is located in Chicago's Wicker Park neighborhood, features regionally-inspired Greek dishes paired with an all-Greek wine list. The stunning dining room is fitted with soaring 16-foot ceilings, travertine marble floors and dramatic Byzantine-style lamps and artwork.

The restaurant was chosen as one of the Best New Restaurants in May 2010 by Chicago magazine and was chosen as one of Chicago's Best New Restaurants in 2009 by the Chicago Tribune and the Chicago Reader. Additionally, Taxim's housemade yogurt with young favas and lamb confit was selected as one of the Best Bites of 2009 by the Chicago Reader, the house-cured sardines were mentioned in Time Out Chicago's 2009 "100 Best Things We Ate (and drank) This Year" feature, and the wood-grilled octopus was selected as 2010's "Best New Dish" by Chicago magazine. Additionally, chef-owner David Schneider appeared on the Food Network's "Iron Chef America" in April 2011 going head-to-head with Iron Chef Cat Cora.

We started off on a mediocre note as they tried to seat our party of 2 at the table right next to kitchen (swinging door and bright kitchen light was about 1 foot away). As the restaurant was about a quarter full, we asked to be moved. The small plates we had were good, especially the octopus and fried cauliflower. The duck gyro was terrible - super chewy and unflavorful. When I think gyro, I think lots of flavor & spices. This was plain duck cut into cubes and put into a old tortilla with sour cream next to it. All our hot dishes were lukewarm at best. Service was also spotty. We received our starter dishes within 15 minutes of sitting down, before even picking out entrees, which was very rushed. It took twice as long for anything to get bussed, even though waiters would stop by to check on drinks and fill water glasses. I think stacked plates mean 'we're done'. We probably won't be back as there are so many other restaurants in the city that are much better.

wonderfully inventive dishes - everything was flavorful and a great contemporary twist on what are now tired cliches down on Halsted in Greektown. However - the open table site says they have valet parking and they DON"T - please correct this Open Table people!! On the other hand - I wouldn't have gone if it hadn't said valet!! Valet is a winter rule in our household!

Unfortunately, the service was poor. We waited 30 minutes between appetizers and had to continually ask to speak with our waitress. I hesitate to recommend this restaurant even though the food is excellent and special for 'Greek' cuisine. Also the noise level is distressing. I would love to come back, but for the reasons above, I probably will not return.

I dined here with 5 friends. We had a selection of appetizers, all of which were outstanding. My particular favorite was the grilled octopus. Of the entrees, the best was no doubt the grilled whole fish, which the servers would fillet for you- wonderfully fresh and perfectly cooked. The lamb chops were also excellent. I was not a fan of the fish gyro, too much fried goodness on my plate for my taste. Overall an excellent meal, desserts were also delicious.

The ambiance offers a step into the Middle East with beautiful lanterns hanging from high ceilings. The wall hangings and copper tables are interesting. The food was delicious particularly the grape leaf wrapped sausage and grape leaf wrapped shrimp. The surprisingly delicious wood-grilled octopus was different and flavorful. The service was excellent.

The food was good a bit salty. It's a twist on Greek food. The service was awful which is why we would not recommend taxim to anyone or come back! For the amount of $$ you spend you except better service and not to be rushed. The waiters, Whitney, actually told us we had to order everything at one time. What? She was very rude and seemed to be uninterested in doing her job. We really wanted to like this place but the service just ruined it for us!

This place was an overall disappointment. Some of the dishes were good but the Duck Gyros that everyone raved about was borderline edible. Why anyone would ruin duck by turning it into a Greek chimichanga is beyond me! The cocktails were refreshing at least. However, this place is WAY overpriced!!! I definitely will not be back.

It was delicious and the service was wonderful. I enjoy a server that is knowledgeable, friendly and checks in during the right times. You don't have to come around every two minutes but once in a while and just being observant is appreciated. The food was delicious: fresh eggplant, quality capers and olive oil, fresh meats and yogurt sauces - it was all great. We had: crushed eggplant, the sardine, fried cauliflower [really good], lamb kabobs and pork sausage. I would definitely go back and try more items.

Better and more original than the usual Greektown restaurants on Halsted St (although I like those too). Everything we had was excellent, especially the lamb shank w. orzo. Good wine list. Definitely would go again. We were there when the street outside was closed off by a noisy street fair, so we didn't get a fair read on what the normal vibe is.

We both had lamb dishes and they were both exceptional! Still raving about the lamb chops. The flavors were amazing and very different from the norm. My biggest issue is that they sat us along the wall at a small 2-top and we had parties of 4 on either side of us. Tables were very close together so it does not make for a quiet dinner. I prefer restaurants where you are not sitting with strangers and have a bit more privacy. The food was worth it, but wish the seating was more comfortable.

Four of us went and shared 5 small plates and 1 big plate and there wasn't a loser in the bunch. We had the best babaganoush ever, and I have had a LOT of babaganoush (it's called roasted eggplant on the menu); we had very, very tender octopus; we had amazing deep fried cauliflower; we had great artichokes; we had very tasty pork belly; and we had the 'fish gyro' which was sea bream fillets (kind of square; my husband called them the best fish sticks ever). Everything rocked! I have recommended it to a dozen people already and we're looking at our calendar to see when we can go back!

I made a reservation and we still waited about 20 minutes to get seated, when the table that they sat us has been clear before we even entered the restaurant. We sat for a while before we got water, place settings or a greeting from our waiter and it wasn't crazy busy. Maybe I have high standards because I used to work in the service industry, but for what I paid I didn't get my money's worth. Food was good, the bus boys were quick and my drink was stiff. Still... will not return.

As a Greek American and someone who studied in Greece, I'm picky about Greek food. Unlike the touristy mediocrity of Greektown, Taxim is the real deal, showcasing the authentic dishes and flavors that are lesser-known and regional. The Greek wine list has good variety, and the house cocktails are solid. Our favorite dishes were the fried cauliflower, squash meatballs, chicken, quail, and lamb chops, which were all complex and executed perfectly. The ambience is great, evoking the Middle Eastern influence seen in north and northeastern Greece. Our server was very knowledgeable about the menu, but could have used more enthusiasm. Taxim isn't cheap and the portions are modest, so it's not an everyday restaurant, but it is a true gem.

This place is cute and the best Greek food outside of Greektown in Chicago. Nice ambiance and our server was fantastic. They have a great Greek wine list but the food is not particularly memorable. It seems like it's been toned down for the "Chicago" palate. The kokoretsi, or wood-grilled caul wrapped lamb offal, was perhaps the best dish. For starters, I also recommend the fire-roasted eggplant dip with black sesame seeds.

For the past several years we have been going to a lot of theater in Wicker Park. We used to feel like there was no place good to eat in the area, and now we're aware of an abundance of options. Taxim, though, which we discovered relatively recently, is now our absolute favorite. We have had nothing which was not absolutely delicious, and between the small plates and large plates we've managed to try quite a few items. Recommended for both adventurous and not-so adventurous eaters--there's something for everybody.
