A word from Tavolata
Chef Brian Clevenger will dazzle guests using creative house-made pastas to create seasonal, Italian-inspired dishes.

Opened in January of 2007, Tavolàta is Chef Ethan Stowell's second restaurant, located at 2323 Second Avenue in Seattle’s Belltown neighborhood. House-made pastas, simple Italian cuisine, and a 30-foot communal table (tavolàta) are the focal point of this urban Italian-inspired eatery. Tavolàta offers a full bar and a wine list featuring Italian and Pacific Northwest wines. Tavolàta serves dinner seven nights a week from 5pm to 11pm. Tavolàta has a semi-private mezzanine for up to 35 guests and a small patio for seasonal dining. Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Every course was perfection. Simply an outstanding experience from start to finish. Our server (I believe David was his name?) was top notch."

  • "I hadn't been to Tavolata for a year or more and tried it again recently. I had three courses: panzanella salad, pappardelle with pancetta, garlic, and chili, and olive oil cake with sorbetto. The Panzanella salad had crunchy croutons and very good heirloom tomatoes, but too much dressing which was very heavy on the balsamic vinegar (making it very sour). The Pappardelle was good, but very, very spicy (quite a bit too spicy for my taste--and I like Thai food that brings a sweat to your forehead). The olive oil cake and sobetto was a solid offering. The server was excellent, and the manager stopped by a couple of time to ensure things were right. The place is very, very loud (hard surfaces, no sound proofing) that detracts from dining."

  • "My wife and I have been to Tavolata 65% of the Sunday nights of this past year. We knew one wait person in particular. loved her service, and would ask for her section. We were always granted that for which we are very grateful. She has since moved on but we decided to keep going there. On this first night back we asked about sitting outside. We were told they do not reserve the outside tables, they are first come first served, which I completely understand. So, when we arrived no one, not one person was sitting outside. We asked to sit, two of us, at a four top, closer to the bar and were told NO, we had to sit at a two top. Not another soul was outside with us in the time we sat there. Darcy redeemed the night."

  • "Although the food was delicious with a good variety of apps, they were out of the salmon at a relatively early dinner. We were a large group and were seated at a long central table. This didn't enhance the opportunity to talk and get caught up with old friends, nor did the the generally loud noise level in the restaurant. This dining may appeal to some, but I found it somewhat disappointing."

  • "First time & it was great. Bit noisy. Food was great & more than I could eat. Service was exceptional."

  • "The artichoke ravaloi was sheer perfection! Great service. Yummy salumi board!"

  • "The food was good but the server was spectacular. She clearly enjoys coming to work and making great experiences happen for diners. I will ask for the same server next time."

  • "I went with my family. They're from Asia and wanted some authentic Italian cuisine. Naturally, I thought of Tavolata. I did not lead them astray. They were very happy with the food and the service was amazing with great recommendations."

  • "Great restaurant, great food and excellent service... I wanted to take my brother who was visiting from out of town with his wife to a special place and Tavolata provided that 10 fold... Staff were very accommodating and sat us on the Mezanine floor even though they were shirt on staff... Food was exquisite... Thank you..."

  • "My first visit and our server made us feel right at home. She was a delight! We ended up staying longer than we expected, probably because we felt right at home. "

  • "as always ... and a really creative option for the gluten free folks. Excellent!"

  • "We just discovered this restaurant a few months ago and as locals I'm very annoyed that we didn't find it sooner. Everything here is so delicious though I have a really difficult time ordering anything except the rigatoni or the gnocchi. Service is always friendly and appropriately paced. Even though I can tell they're really busy, I never feel as though we're being rushed out like some other restaurants. Everything we've tried here is fantastic and so delicious. It's hard not to over-order just to try more dishes! This is one Seattle restaurant that is not to be missed!!"

  • "Bread was very good. And food was "pure"- home made, but little flavor, and small portions. I had the Agnolotti (small) dinner dish; Asparagus; and a olive oil cake. There was a long line of people waiting to go in, so maybe I would have been happier with something else. If one has sciatica - the wood seats are not the most comfortable. While visiting from CA, I ate at 3 other restaurants that I would return to first."

  • "You likely won't get bowled over by the food, but it's good and sometimes inventive. The space is narrow and fun, the service is friendly, and the prices fair. A staple in Seattle, it needs to change to keep up in the "inventive cuisine" category, but it's a good spot."

  • "Loved this place. The seating upstairs was lit by candle light on the walls. The food was amazing. It reminded me of little chic hot spot restaurants in Soho in NYC. Highly recommend it. "

  • "Noisy and designed that way, with all hard surfaces, including the seats, which were uncomfortable. Unpainted concrete walls, feels a bit like a cave -- maybe better upstairs, but I didn't go up. The sidewalk probably would be great on a warm evening. Limited menu, a bit too avant garde for my tastes. A minority of the items were appealing based on the menu, although the dishes we ultimately ordered were superb. But small portions. I'd suggest they add at least a couple more standards -- basic meats and seafood, a couple standard pasta dishes, etc. Not every dish has to reflect the chef's unique tastes!"

  • "I was visiting Seattle for a conference and took myself out to Tavolata on the re commendation of local friends. I had a delicious meal at the bar. Grilled octopus salad, anchovy spaghetti, and salted fennel sorbetto with shortbread were all delicious. I would definitely return if I find myself in Seattle again!"

  • "Always excellent. We have never been disappointed in the many years we have dined here. Service is always very good/professional. Staff are all very friendly/helpful. We will be back!"

  • "I had high hopes for Tavolata based on the reputation of Tavolata Chef/Owner Ethan Stowell. The restaurant was a big disappointment. Though the atmosphere was appealing with a cool ambience and communal tables, the food did not live up to the ES reputation. The rigatoni with sausage was just ok. Nothing to write home about. The same was true for the chick pea salad. It had little to no flavor. The brussel sprouts were nice and the charcuterie was a large portion. No cooking by the restaurant crew needed though. The wine recommended by the waitress was average at best though not cheap. With so many other great choices in Seattle, I would not go back to Tavolata!"

  • "Myself and my three friends were very impressed. Thankfully we each ordered something different so we could try a bit of everything. We went for restaurant week and had the last reservation of the night, even so, the wait staff was very friendly and attentive. I don't know if I would be able to afford it if it had not have been restaurant week, but I will go back if I ever get the extra cash!"

  • "We were here for Restaurant Week. The celery soup with chard was amazing. Had the ragu on rigatoni, which was meaty "Italian mama" fare, and had mint leaves in the sauce which was a great subtle pick up. We also had the mackerel, which was simply flavored among spring vegetables (celery, onion, peas), a few mushrooms. I think my dining companion was hungry afterwards, but luckily the rigatoni was meaty and satisfying enough for the both of us. Dessert was fine (grapefruit sorbetto, & a vanilla sauce/lemon custard/rhubarb sauce combination which he thoroughly enjoyed). The only complaint I have was the noise level-- both my companion and I have softer, "crowd pitched" voices, so we had a hard time hearing each other. Otherwise, it was great!"

  • "A friend of mine took me to this place and said it was her favorite pasta joint in Vancouver, and I can see why. It's unpretencious, the pasta is rustic and flavorful, and the service is excellent. The plates are designed to share family style, so go with a few friends and order a couple of dishes. Ask for a wine recommendation (unless you're an Italian wine connoisseur). Their staff is knowledgeable and always made great recommendations. Try the burrata plate and the arugula salad to start. After that, any pasta and dessert will do."

  • "First time to downton Seattle....Loved the neighborhood! The restaurant exceeded all expectations! We ordered an appetizer and two entrees. We enjoyed squid and fennel first along with a half bottle of white wine. The sausage and rigatoni, as well as the spaghetti with anchovy for our main courses took us back to dinners at our grandmother's house. We regretted not ordering the zeppole for dessert...We saw a bowl of them being served at the next table. They looked heavenly... Thanks for the individual bags of pasta at the end of our meal. What a nice touch!"

  • "We had a reservation set for 8:15pm and got there at about 8:00pm. We knew we arrived early and decided to sit in the bar for a drink before our table was ready. I told the host that we'd be at the bar and he mentioned he'd come get us when our table was ready. I went back up to the host stand at 8:30 asking about our table and he said "it was still being set." That's what he said when we first arrived. He finally came to get us a 8:50pm. Luckily I was with great company, but that was her first time eating there. Not a great first impression. Although the food was really good."

  • "I've been here once before and it was great. But this last experience was very bad. Even though we had a reservation for 8:30, we were told to wait in the bar and it ended up being over 40 minutes before we just gave in and ate there. The help mostly said that it wasn't their fault and blamed it on other guests not leaving soon enough, but that would be a problem common to all restaurants and I've never had to wait close to an hour for a reserved table before. Nothing was comped on the bill, and we told them we're in a rush to leave because of an arriving flight and they still took a while to handle payment. The food as always was delicious though."

  • "Good service and nice ambiance however the food was less than inspiring. It seems the restaurant is perhaps catering to a corporate crowd who are just in and out and not repeat business or the young crowd who is looking for a nice bar/restaurant atmosphere but not very discerning about food. Very poor wines by the glass. Tavolata has a long way to go to compete with the new restaurants in town who offer sensational and interesting flavors in their appetizers/entrées."

  • "Came in for a early dinner after a matinee at the Ballet with my wife and 7 yr old daughter. Service was attentive, but not intrusive. Great Cocktails and a nice wine list with a good variety (type and price). Excelent appetizers and pasta. We had Steak Tartar (excellent) and Brussel sprouts( excellent flavor, bit oily) as a starter and three pastas ; Gnocchi with Rabbit, Rigatoni with spicy sausage and spaghetti with a tomato basil sauce. All were wonderful, Gnocchi was a stand out but the Rigatoni and spaghetti were house made and wonderful. Bottom line, we will return."

  • "While in Seattle we were told we had to try Tavolata. It's a favorite spot for a couple we are friends with and decided to meet up for diner. I knew the dinner would be great, based on their experiences, but I didn't realize how amazing it would be. The pasta was so fresh and cooked perfectly...consider my mind blown! I wish I had Tavolata in my hometown because I would likely indulge once a week. Do yourself a favor and try the Bigoli, Gnocchi, Salumi Board, Pork Belly...well just try everything. I would suggest getting a couple different plates and sharing amongst friends because you won't want to settle on just one dish."

  • "Great overall. Only complaint was on a quiet night being seated RIGHT next to two other groups when it was fairly empty(late Monday night). Portions are small but flavor was big."

  • "Great happy hour at the bar section. Good drinks and bar food. The pork chops are not included in discounted bar food. They are delicious! We'll worth paying full price."

  • "We had high hopes and knew that we needed to try their fresh pasta. The pasta was very good but....the Maltagliata with Ragu, Bechamel, Pecorino was so salty as to be a challenge to eat. No flavor just heavy salt taste and after taste...very disappointing. The Pappardelle with Pancetta, Egg Yolk, Zucchini was not salty at all and we even found some zucchini hidden away. Good pasta but very poor sauces. Who would send out something that was so salty as to be unbearable...someone who did not care or could not be bothered to taste what was coming out of the kitchen. All in all very disappointing. There are only so many moments in life to enjoy great food to ever consider going back."

  • "I had never been to this restaurant before and picked it because of its great reviews. We got there and were seated right away and the ambiance was so nice. We all loved the food and the waitress was nice, I wish she was a little more helpful with the menu especially for a group that had never been there and was not familiar with all the Italian dishes. Non the less it was a great place we all enjoyed the meal and will return again. By the way the rabbit was incredible."

  • "Tavolata is great for small groups that want delicious food for a not-too-expensive price (granted if you want a main course that is not just pasta, it will be a little expensive). It's the kind of place where you can dress up and not feel out of place, or dress casually and not feel out of place either. Everyone that was in my group loved the atmosphere and the food, which made for a pleasant evening. The gnocchi alla romana was great. I haven't had gnocchi that well made before. Highly recommend!"

  • "Came here with a friend, one of her favorite restaurants in Seattle. Completely impressed. Pasta was excellent, service was excellent. Our server even recommended our next stop for the evening based on the drinks we were having with our dinner. Ambiance allows for strangers to meet and strike up a conversation, or a more private dinner along the side tables. Now one of my favorite restaurants. Will definitely be back, will definitely be bringing more friends."
