A word from Tavira
Duarte Rebolo was born in Madeira Island, Madeira, a popular European tourist spot in the Atlantic Ocean. His career in restaurant service began there and so far has spanned about 20 years. Tavira restaurant opened its doors in November of 1999. The name Tavira comes from a beautiful place in Portugal. Since opening Tavira has been included in Washingtonian Magazine's 100 Very Best Restaurants and rated very good to excellent by Zagat. Tavira has also been mentioned nationally in Gourmet Magazine, Bethesda Magazine and received favorable reviews from The Washington Post, Washington Times, The Gazette, Washington Diplomat and other local newspapers.   • "I loved the quiet, small atmosphere, the wait staff were gracious, prompt & answered our questions. The table setting was beautifully presented. For once, a person wasn't assaulted with the blare of loud music which now is supposed to be considered "background" music but isn't. My friend had the soup special; Minestrones Soup, which looked divine, she said it was not only delicious but filling. I ordered the Calves Liver Steak (something I don't have very often & do enjoy when it's well prepared) with mashed potatoes & fresh stream vegetables. My meal was cooked perfectly & the amount was just enough. Though the lunch prices may be a little high; for the atmosphere, food quality & service, I personally felt it was worth it."

  • "This was our second visit to Tavira with a whole different wait staff and it was still excellent. My dad from NY is a big restaurant snob and this one passed all his tests- twice. All of our food from appetizer to dessert was excellent. He said his cocktail was even better than normal so there you go. Visit and eat well. Perfecto!"

  • "A lovely little Portugese restaurant located on the lower level of an office building. Charming decor, good service, good food, and reasonable prices. Altogether a really good combination, and one I think you will enjoy returning to again and again. I intend to. However, for your first visit, be aware that this is not easy to find. You must aim for the tall office building at this address, not the nearby shopping center. Park just as you would for the office building. Then enter it and head downstairs to the restaurant. Once you have mastered this, it will be easy to find again. Worth the effort. Go. Oh yes, and enjoy the quiet ambience!! Astonishing, isn't it, that you might actually enjoy the conversation of your table companion(s)?!"

  • "It was a little sad that there were so few people at the restaurant 6:30-8:30 pm, but it meant that it was really easy to have a conversation, and the single waiter was very attentive and helpful. The fish was excellent as was the wine. I hope they are busier other nights, since I would like this restaurant to remain open."

  • "I have been to Tavira many times and am always pleased. This is a solidly excellent restaurant with a Portuguese theme. the seafood is perfectly prepared and the caprese style salad was excellent - even the tomatoes in March tasted like tomatoes. Our server was very knowledgeable about what was being prepared and for the one guest at the table who did not eat garlic, the kitchen was very flexible, preparing the dish exactly as she requested. This is also a pretty restaurant - if a bit old fashioned. Prices are reasonable and the evening was a delight!"

The food, especially the fish specials, is always excellent and the menu is varied enough to satisfy a broad spectrum of personal tastes. There are several small rooms that are great for a group, and the wait staff is enthusiastic and attentive. The wine list is very good and really showcases Portuguese wines. The best thing about Tavira is that you can actually conduct a conversation without yelling or straining, a pleasant change from other restaurants that might have equally good food."

  • "Excellent regional seafood dishes. Other items not so authentic, modified perhaps to reflect American tastes. Service was very good until it came time to order dessert. Hello! Hello! Hello! We were abandoned! I am talking 10 minutes! Long story-short, when a restaurant employee eventually noticed us (our table was right in the middle and I was waiving vigorously), we asked for the bill rather than order a port and some dessert. We will return for the food, but next time I will order dessert with the appetizers!"

This helped to make up for the fact that it was located below ground with no windows - though the painted vistas on the walls helped. Service was a bit confused for uncertain reasons..we seemed to be divided between two servers who seemed to forget we were there near the end of the meal. However, other than the service "glitch" we had a good meal. We've been there before and will return again."

  • "I was looking for reservations for a restaurant for Valentine's Day. Instead of the common places, my boyfriend and I usually go to, we wanted to try some place new and I stumbled upon this restaurant. I made reservations at 9 p.m. the restaurant was not difficult to find, except it was located in an office building, we saw the restaurant name on the building but couldn't find the main door. We followed a couple going into the building. There is a night security guard at the desk who shown us the restaurant. It was located downstairs, its beautiful and romantic. The tables, the ambience was romantic, food was delicious, flavorful, service was a little slow, but overall we had a great time, very romantic. Will come back again."

The side spinach was tasty, My husband had the mixed grill and enjoyed it. The music was great. We went on the second Friday of the month and thoroughly enjoyed the band. It made the visit. Service was excellent. Our server recommended a great bottle of wine. They know the balance between attentive and bothersome."

  • "AS AN OCCASIONAL CUSTOMER, I WISH WE FELT GOOD ABOUT MAKING MORE FREQUENT VISITS TO TAVIRA. THE FOOD IS REALLY GOOD AND OFTEN ONE CAN FIND A QUIET SPOT. NOW COMES THE "HOWEVER". WE HAVE BEEN THERE WITH A SMALL GROUP, JUST TWO OF US AND ALMOST EACH TIME WE ARE MET WITH SURLY WAITERS. TIME AFTER TIME IF WE DARE ASK FOR SOMETHING LIKE HOW SPICY, CAN YOU HOLD THE SALT ON THIS, ETC. EACH TIME THE ANSWER HAS BEEN "WE DON'T DO THAT" THE ANSWER IS SO PAT ONE KNOWS IT MUST COME FROM HIGH UP...LIKE A THREATENING CHEF. YOU ARE SITTING IN A POSH SETTING, OFFERING GOOD FOOD AND THE PERSON-TO-PRSON LEAVES A BAD TASTE. TOO BAD."

  • "Tavira was great, and well worth the trek out to the suburbs. It's hard to get authentic Portuguese food in DC, and Tavira reminded me of the dishes I had on my recent trip to Portugal. The lamb shank, suckling pig, and sea bass were particularly good and they had a nice Alentejo that paired well with the meats. I definitely want to go back and try the rest of the menu."

  • "These days, there are not many restaurants in the DC area where you can go for a nice quiet meal with good food. Be thankful for Tavira. You can have a pleasant conversation with friends without having to shout while eating good food, The menu is extensive and the food mostly Portuguese style. My wife and I have been to Tavira about 4 times, and afterwords we always say that we should come here more often."

  • "Easy free parking was a great plus, and were impressed by very charming dining room decorated for the holidays and they even have 2 smaller private rooms, one with a fireplace, super cute! The live music was setting up as we were leaving (around 7pm) and the musicians even played a song that my daughter got to sing to mind you it was early, before the rush. The server and server assistants were so warm and obliging. My elderly parents loved it and have been to Tavira and loved talking all about it with the staff. Our server had been there almost 10 years or more and was extremely knowledgeable, plates were all nicely portioned- perfect for us. the largest portion was an amazing pork shank i believe, incredible as it fell off the bone."

  • "This restaurant is in the lower level of an office building. After hours the front entrance is locked and you have to enter through a side door with a security guard. It CAN be confusing. Tavira has a strong European sense--not simply Portuguese. I had Medallions of Beef with Madeira which was superb although a tad overdone. My wife has a sirloin which was perfect. The menu has an extensive offering of Cod and other fish. Our dining partners both had fish and were very complimentary. I had a pimento salad with goat cheese that was marvelous. They have a nice wine list with Portuguese, Spanish and European offerings. Our waiter was Portuguese who had lived in Angola and Spain as well as Portugal and was friendly, informative and attentive."
