  • "Good bread, tasty desserts, a pleasant ambience, and very good service, but the main courses were disappointing. The fish (cod) was bony. And the chicken in hot sauce, though tasty, was scrawny and bony as well."

  • "We were looking for a spot close to Rockville because we were going to a play up that way. We chose this because it was Portuguese, which isn't something we get often. It's in a strange location. Not close to anything else and in a bank building that isn't very attractive. The inside is better. The service was excellent. Our waiter, very friendly and helpful. The food was good, but not amazing. One of the steaks we got (the ribeye) was very charred. I liked it, but everyone else at the table said it tasted burned. The NY Strip was much better, said they. I got the Hen Piri Piri, which was good (not really that spicy) - but again, nothing to go back for really. The duck special was the same - good, but not amazing."

  • "I took my family (group of six) for Mother's Day after reviewing all the review on OpenTable. Our experience was very similar to all the positive reviews here. Our overall experience was very pleasant with the staff (very attentive and knowledgeable) and especially food. I ordered the Brozini fish, day's special which was amazingly delicious with a well balanced taste! Plus dish ingredients was superb and fresh. We were surprised by its freshness for a restaurant which is tucked in a basement of an office building! I highly recommend Tavira as you will be pleased by your experience."

  • "The food, wine, and service here is fantastic. Authentic and delicious Portuguese food in a quiet and classic/old-fashioned atmosphere. Tavira is also one of my favorite places for seafood in this area, as well, as they have a great selection between the standard menu and specials. Haven't found many restaurants like this in the DC area, and it's a welcome change! The location might seem odd, but the food and service make me a repeat customer. "

  • "Extensive menu, great food and good service. It never seems to be crowded so is quiet enough you can carry on a conversation with your tablemates."

  • "I have dined at Tavira on several occasions and have always enjoyed it. The menu is ample and whatever I have chosen has been well-prepared. The restaurant is very attractive and the service good. I shall return!"

  • "Lunch on a weekday. 11.45. The place was completely empty. At noon two more people arrived. Our server was condescending to the elderly lady who was with us. He rushed us by picking up all le the silverware while some of us were finishing our main dishes. All in all, a very negative experience. If nothing else, the waiters need to be properly trained. "

  • "Came here for a graduation dinner. Food was excellent. Grilled calamari was a favorite. Loved the pimento salad and the steak. Our waiter Pepe was informative and professional. We will return if we are in the area."

  • "I must note that our previous experience at Tavira was EXCELLENT. This trip however left something to be desired. Part of that was my error in ordering the cornish hen in a piri piri sauce. It is impossible to maintain good table etiquette while eating those suckers. Therefore, I requested that the remains on my plate be wrapped up so that I might take it home and consume it like a wild beast in private. The busboy did not speak a speck of English and he threw it out. Husband had the swordfish and says it was excellent. I however left hungry. They did re-fire another 1/2 hen that I took home...kuddos to the restaurant for that."

  • "I don't know how we didn't know about Tavira before but we'll be back. Superb Portuguese food, well prepared, well seasoned and delicious. The location is pretty obscure but it's worth seeking out - just inside the Beltway on Connecticut Ave, in the lower level of a generic office building. Highly recommended."

  • "Ok, this place was a little difficult to find but worth it. There were four in our party and 3 out of the 4 thought the food was fantastic. Unfortunately the last member of our group was not a fan. That is why I cant give it a five star rating. I had two specials the calamari and the dorado. Both were excellent, well prepared flavorful and healthy. The relatively decent prices for wine made the experience that more special as we could easily afford to choose a very nice selection to accompany our meal without breaking the bank. I would definitely recommend this place and will be back soon on my own. "

  • "This is a great restaurant with fine Portuguese dishes. The service is top notch. I recommend the fish dishes and the duck. As good as it gets!"

  • "The waist staff was very attentive, although it seemed our table busser was new and did not know the best times to step in. In our party of 5 two of us loved our dishes (the beef medallions were spectacular), two thought it was ok, and one did not like theirs. Overall we had a good time and enjoyed the atmosphere."

  • "So we've been to Tavira many times, and decided to go for my wife's birthday. First let me say we had one of our best meals ever, we remarked all the way home. Clams, steak, fish, sides all perfect-plus. But the service this time was disappointing considering it was a special meal and the waiter was SPECIFICALLY told so. Different servers kept passing through, which was fine, but the tempo felt hectic not relaxed and main guy seemed missing at times. And no "little extra something"to acknowledge the birthday. We still love the place but not sure what happened that night. Not sure how/if you flag tables for attention, but this night was a service miss. The young guy seemed overworked, maybe under trained."

  • "In addition to the wide choice of meats and seafood available on the regular dinner menu, there were several daily specials. The food was well prepared, with fresh ingredients, and just the right amount of seasoning. The wait staff were knowledgeable and helpful, attentive but without making you feel rushed in any way. Ww definitely plan to return."

  • "If you get tired of the same Mediterranean fare, Tavira could be the perfect place for you. Incredible food, and a very affordable, but excellent, wine list. One of the best meals I've had in the DC area."

  • "THis is a great out of the way place that I highly recommend. The food, especially the fish is awesome and authentic Portuguese. We have been here several times and always been pleased. THe staff and service is fantastic, the place is quiet enough so you can talk and it is always full of people enjoying themselves."

  • "We have eaten at Tavira numerous times -- The food is delicious and the service is very attentive and not the least bit pushy or rushed. If you want a delicious meal, in a very relaxed atmosphere, we would highly recommend Tavira. Muito obrigado."

  • "I loved the quiet, small atmosphere, the wait staff were gracious, prompt & answered our questions. The table setting was beautifully presented. For once, a person wasn't assaulted with the blare of loud music which now is supposed to be considered "background" music but isn't. My friend had the soup special; Minestrones Soup, which looked divine, she said it was not only delicious but filling. I ordered the Calves Liver Steak (something I don't have very often & do enjoy when it's well prepared) with mashed potatoes & fresh stream vegetables. My meal was cooked perfectly & the amount was just enough. Though the lunch prices may be a little high; for the atmosphere, food quality & service, I personally felt it was worth it."

  • "This was our second visit to Tavira with a whole different wait staff and it was still excellent. My dad from NY is a big restaurant snob and this one passed all his tests- twice. All of our food from appetizer to dessert was excellent. He said his cocktail was even better than normal so there you go. Visit and eat well. Perfecto!"

  • "A lovely little Portugese restaurant located on the lower level of an office building. Charming decor, good service, good food, and reasonable prices. Altogether a really good combination, and one I think you will enjoy returning to again and again. I intend to. However, for your first visit, be aware that this is not easy to find. You must aim for the tall office building at this address, not the nearby shopping center. Park just as you would for the office building. Then enter it and head downstairs to the restaurant. Once you have mastered this, it will be easy to find again. Worth the effort. Go. Oh yes, and enjoy the quiet ambience!! Astonishing, isn't it, that you might actually enjoy the conversation of your table companion(s)?!"

  • "It was a little sad that there were so few people at the restaurant 6:30-8:30 pm, but it meant that it was really easy to have a conversation, and the single waiter was very attentive and helpful. The fish was excellent as was the wine. I hope they are busier other nights, since I would like this restaurant to remain open."

  • "We had had a wonderful, but exhausting day and wanted a peaceful place with great food to decompress. Tavira filled the bill perfectly. Food couldn't have been better, delightful environment, not too loud, un-rushed service. We went home relaxed and very content."

  • "Very good food! Even the bread was delicious. The service was great and the food came out quick. Only thing I didn't like was when the band started to set up right next to our table."

  • "We were looking for a spot to eat before a show. Tavira was close and convenient. On the website they advertise a $25 3 course menu. We had to ask about it when we got there. Food was well presented and tasty. Notable wine list."

  • "I have been to Tavira many times and am always pleased. This is a solidly excellent restaurant with a Portuguese theme. the seafood is perfectly prepared and the caprese style salad was excellent - even the tomatoes in March tasted like tomatoes. Our server was very knowledgeable about what was being prepared and for the one guest at the table who did not eat garlic, the kitchen was very flexible, preparing the dish exactly as she requested. This is also a pretty restaurant - if a bit old fashioned. Prices are reasonable and the evening was a delight!"

  • "Tavira hasn't changed in 10 years in terms of the food quality and the dining experience. The food, especially the fish specials, is always excellent and the menu is varied enough to satisfy a broad spectrum of personal tastes. There are several small rooms that are great for a group, and the wait staff is enthusiastic and attentive. The wine list is very good and really showcases Portuguese wines. The best thing about Tavira is that you can actually conduct a conversation without yelling or straining, a pleasant change from other restaurants that might have equally good food."

  • "Excellent regional seafood dishes. Other items not so authentic, modified perhaps to reflect American tastes. Service was very good until it came time to order dessert. Hello! Hello! Hello! We were abandoned! I am talking 10 minutes! Long story-short, when a restaurant employee eventually noticed us (our table was right in the middle and I was waiving vigorously), we asked for the bill rather than order a port and some dessert. We will return for the food, but next time I will order dessert with the appetizers!"

  • "We enjoyed the ability to make reservations easily, parking abundant, service very attentive and food very good. This helped to make up for the fact that it was located below ground with no windows - though the painted vistas on the walls helped. The food was fresh, well-prepared(though the ingredients not that creative), but I found it a bit expensive considering the location. Would try again."

  • "The food was excellent with enough flair to be enjoyed by all but still be authentic. The service is "old country, attentive and polite. Location a little difficult to find but signage is good. We will be back to continue to explore the seafood menu choices and desserts."

  • "We enjoyed the food and there was a reasonable variety of selections on the menus. There were multiple specials the night we were here including a few which were especially good. Service was a bit confused for uncertain reasons..we seemed to be divided between two servers who seemed to forget we were there near the end of the meal. However, other than the service "glitch" we had a good meal. We've been there before and will return again."
